Gregers was one of seven fillies or mares to make more than $1,000,000 at the sale, with the price eclipsing the $1,700,000 price Group Two-winning three-year-old Nurse Kitchen (Savabeel) achieved on Day One.

Day Three action saw the aggregate close at $105,530,000 and breaking the $100,000,000 barrier for the first time in Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale’s history.

Bidding for Gregers opened at $500,000 before quickly sailing past the $1,000,000 mark, with Yu Long Investments and Jon Freyer, acting for Japanese owner Katsumi Yoshida, going back and forth before the former eventually won out with the $1,750,000 bid.

The Burke Bloodstock-consigned and former Lindsay Park-trained Gregers, who won the Thousand Guineas Prelude (Gr 2, 1400m), was catalogued as Lot 1240 and sold in foal to the Woodside Park-based stallion Written Tycoon (Iglesia).

A dual stakes winner and Group One placegetter, Gregers was sold with a 14 September covering to the Woodside Park Stud stallion.

Gregers is out of city-winning mare Satnav (Canny Lad), who is a sister to the dam of Coolmore Classic (registered as TAD Kennedy Stakes) (Gr 1, 1500m) winner Ofcourseican (Mossman) and South African Grade One winner Gimmethegreenlight (More Than Ready).

Satnav has had three foals to race, all of them winners, including Gregers and her half-sister, Group Three winner Girl Guide (Churchill Downs).

Bloodstock agent Sheamus Mills, who acts on behalf of Yu Long Investment’s owner Yuesheng Zhang, said the seven figure sum was not surprising given the number of stakes performers in her immediate family.

“She has a family that has just been developing over the past ten years or so. Mr Zhang just loves the family and she was his favourite mare in the sale,” Mills said.

“He's missed out on a couple (of the top lots) so far and there was was a fair push there from (Mr Yoshida) to get her as well.

“These mares that have a race record like her, fast mares, good looking mares, young mares that have a brilliant sister (come at a price). The whole family is going really well, and there might be a good stallion over in South Africa in the family also, so we had to push for her as she's a rare offering.”

Mills said Gregers could return to Written Tycoon, the sire of Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Capitalist and Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1350m) winner Music Magnate, for her second season at stud later this year.

He said Written Tycoon had proven himself as a stallion capable of producing elite Group One winners and highly sought after yearlings in the sales ring.

Written Tycoon had his first $1,000,000 yearling at this year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, with the colt bought by James Harron Bloodstock. Harron also purchased and raced Capitalist, who stands his first season at Newgate Farm this year.

“I think he had to break the ceiling a little bit, Written Tycoon. He had to show that he was capable of doing that (getting a $1,000,000 yearling),” Mills said.

“There is a fair chance she will go back to him just because being a Commands mare there is a limited number of stallions you can go to, so he is high on the list.”

Yu Long Investments, who finished as under bidder to China Horse Club on Nurse Kitchen, also purchased another seven figure lot, the Dormello Stud-offered Soriano (Savabeel), who at $1,150,000 was sold in foal to Tavistock (Montjeu).

Burke Bloodstock’s David Burke, who started his Hunter Valley operation last year, was grateful Gregers’ owners had entrusted him with selling the mare on the Gold Coast.

“She always had the potential to make that sort of money, but it takes two strong purchasers there to go to that level and luckily enough we had the right people on the mare,” Burke told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“I must thank the owners for entrusting her with me to sell, it has been a real privilege to put a draft through of this quality at my first sale up here at Magic Millions.”

Gregers’ breeder and former part-owner, Victorian businessman Colin McKenna, was emotional after parting with the rising seven-year-old mare for $1,750,000.

“We didn’t think she would quite make that much and we had a reserve on her ourselves to buy her out,” McKenna said.

“There is no issue with the partnership, it was just that a couple of the partners wanted to sell, and that is a very, very big price.

“We have got her sister at home and we’ve still got plenty coming

through. We don’t like selling them, but sometimes you have to. It’s not about the money, it’s just that they get too valuable to be walking around at home.”

McKenna also part-owned the formerly Ciaron-Maher-trained Petits Filous (Street Boss), who on Tuesday was sold to James Harron Bloodstock for $1,050,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale.

Ciaron Maher Racing purchased Petits Filous for $65,000 from the draft of her breeder Emirates Park at the 2014 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. She went on to win five her her ten starts and $365,850 in prize money with her biggest victory coming in the Quezette Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) as a three-year-old last season.

Hawthorne Parts With Polska For $1,600,000

Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock delivered two knockout blows late on the final day of Book One when securing Polska for $1,600,000, and, soon after, the Group Two-winning Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mare Zurella for $800,000 for client GSA Bloodstock.

Polska, who was offered by Widden Stud on behalf of her owner David Henderson as Lot 1504, has already produced Angus Armanasco Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Catch A Fire and VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner and Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) runner up Seaburge (Sebring).

Hawthorne said Polska was a young, proven broodmare who would join GSA Bloodstock’s elite band of breeding stock.

“I waited all day for her. We have a really international market and you just have to buy these good mares. They just don't come along often and we are happy to get her,” Hawthorne said.

“She is a proven producer, having already had Catch A Fire and Seaburge, who is a very, very good horse. We did a bit of research on him and if he wins a Group One, which he is capable of doing, that plays into our hands.”

Polska’s filly by Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) was sold to Fittocks Stud and Boomer Bloodstock for $280,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Widden Stud draft.

A two-year-old sister to Seaburge and Catch A Fire, who was purchased for $100,000 at the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, is in training with Tony McEvoy.

“The next foal coming along has a very positive wrap on it with Tony McEvoy,” Hawthorne said.

“What a gorgeous mare she is … and you can see why her foals run. We are ramping up the quality of our broodmare band. We want to get the quality in there and you have to pay for these mares. It's an international market now, you have to put the gloves on.”

Henderson, who was a part-owner of Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Sebring and retains a share in the Widden Stud-based stallion, said it was a business decision to sell Polska.

He had purchased the Encosta De Lago (Fairy King) mare specifically to support Sebring at stud.

“She's been an excellent mare for me and it will be sad to see her go. The economics in this business (say to sell her) and I thought it was the right time to put her on the market. It exceeded my expectations,” Henderson said.

“If you go back through the pedigree pages and find a mare that has thrown two quality horses from her first two like she has, they're hard to find. People travel the world looking for them. I had every confidence that she would sell well, and she sold really well.”

Widden Stud’s Antony Thompson said it would be sad to see Polska leave his property after she had commenced her breeding career in brilliant fashion with two Group winners.

“David is a great friend of the farm and we have been lucky to look after Polska until now. They have had success with her as a mare and it is a great return on his investment today,” Thompson told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“Obviously, she is a blue hen and a foundation broodmare and it is with some sadness we see her leave the farm, but I am sure we will be thrilled in the spring when she returns back to visit Sebring.

“Congratulations to Jonathan Munz on securing such a magnificent mare. Hopefully he has as much success with her and she can become that real foundation mare to add to Jonathan's fantastic band of mares.”

Elsewhere on Day One, US breeder Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holding’s agent John Moynihan secured Polska’s four-year-old daughter Catch A Fire for $950,000.

Catch A Fire, who was consigned by Bhima Thoroughbreds as Lot 674, was a $40,000 purchase by Higgins and Dalziel Racing at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

At the conclusion of Book One, Widden Stud was the leading vendor (by aggregate) after selling 47 fillies and mares for an aggregate of $10,890,500 at an average of $231,713.

Zabeel Mare Zurella Joins GSA

Dean Hawthorne also secured Zurella (Zabeel) who was sold in foal to Coolmore Stud-based Golden Slipper Stakes winner Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro) for $800,000.

Offered by Burke Bloodstock as Lot 1696, a supplementary entry, the VRC Let’s Elope Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Zurella will also join the GSA Bloodstock band, which includes Melbourne businessman Jonathan Munz.

A Group One placegetter, Zurella is a half-sister to this year’s New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) runner up Devise (Darci Brahma), while her dam Doneze Girl (Volksraad) is a half-sister to Group Three winner Diamond Deck (Octagonal).

Hawthorne told ANZ Bloodstock News he was not leaving the sales complex without purchasing Zurella after missing out on a number of mares by Zabeel (Sir Tristram) this week.

“She is a good Zabeel mare and we know a bit about the family. We have been trying to buy Zabeel mares all week and couldn’t get them, so we weren’t going home without her,” Hawthorne said.

“We have already got a big broodmare band and have a lot of quality, but every year we shelve out the bottom end and we are buying three or four quality mares and race some nice fillies out of these mares.”

Hawthorne said GSA Bloodstock could retain the Vancouver foal out of Zurella, whose first foal by Fastnet Rock (Danehill) died in 2015, while she slipped in 2016.

“She is a bit of a quirky Zabeel mare, but we are used to that, and she is in foal to a first season sire in Vancouver, so who knows, but if it is a filly we may keep it to race,” he said.

Burke Bloodstock, which has a boutique operation in the Hunter Valley, sold five lots at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale for an aggregate of $4,150,000 at an average of $830,000 and Burke was delighted Zurella had continued the farm’s strong sale.

“I am ecstatic and I am delighted that Dean was able to buy the mare. We had Jon Freyer (for Katsumi Yoshida), Yu Long Investments and Dean on our mares today, so it is great have leading participants in the industry duelling over our mares,” Burke told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“Zurella is a beautiful mare and you can see why she was a great racehorse who oozes quality and was a pleasure to deal with at the sales.”

In all, Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock purchased 11 fillies and mares at an aggregate of $4,635,000 and an average price of $421,364 and finished Book One as the third leading purchase by aggregate.

Lucas’s Phoenix Rises Again

Bloodstock agent David Lucas, acting on behalf of Phoenix Thoroughbreds was again busy at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, with the addition of internationally-bred mare Lady Oracle (Medaglia d’Oro) who was sold in foal to Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) for $400,000.

Catalogued as Lot 1336, the Baystone Farm-consigned Lady Oracle, a UK-bred and European-raced mare, is a daughter of Millie Fox Stakes (Gr 3, 1300m) winner Wild Queen (Loup Sauvage).

Lady Oracle, one of three winners for Wild Queen, is a half-sister to Yavanna

(Redoute’s Choice), the dam of the Godolphin-owned Listed winner and ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) runner up Telperion (Street Cry).

Wild Queen, meanwhile, is a half-sister to Edward Manifold Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) winner So Gorgeous (Brief Truce), herself the dam of Dubai Golden Shaheen Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Sterling City (Nadeem) and Tulloch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) winner Tipungwuti (Fusaichi Pegasus).

It was a terrific result for Noorilim Park operations manager Sherah Sullivan and European bloodstock agent Matt Houldsworth, who purchased Lady Oracle in Germany for a modest price.

Baystone Farm presented the mare at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale on Sullivan’s behalf.

Sullivan, who works for Peter Carrick’s Noorilim Park, was ecstatic with the windfall.

“Matt, who is a good friend of mine, put the idea in my head to have a look at a few Australian pedigrees out of Europe, so he did the leg work over in Newmarket,” Sullivan said.

“The mare went through the sale and passed in and I had been following Telperion closely, just watched him run in the Golden Slipper and then go onto the Sires and I sent Matt on a mission to find her in Germany and took the punt with her.

“She was still a little bit weak and needed to fill out coming off the track. We brought her home, fed her up and got her straight in foal and everything has just fallen into place. It's been brilliant, an unbelievable result and a huge profit. I am rapt.”

Friday 2 June 2017 Lucas’s Phoenix Rises Again

Houldsworth said there was a growing market for European mares with Southern Hemisphere pedigrees to be exported to Australia and mated with local stallions.

“We are always trying to find opportunities back in Europe to bring back down here and she just presented a huge opportunity for us,” Houldsworth said.

“She has a huge Australian pedigree that is still very alive at the moment as well. At the time we bought her she was fairly unfurnished, fairly raw. It was quite a punt when we bought her but Sherah has done an incredible job with her and everything really goes down to her.

“They picked the right stallion and they have her looking fantastic for this sale. I just couldn't be happier for her really. Hopefully there will be a few more missions in Europe to come.”

Houldsworth said European-bred mares had to meet certain criteria to be commercially viable in Australia.

“You have to be quite selective with the type of mare you bring here from Europe. It is a high attrition rate for us back home trying to find the right type, but I think if you do buy the right type of horses to come here, there is such a strong middle market and into the higher market as well (for it to be viable),” he said.

“You have to have the right individual to start with and the pedigree will guide you on where you can sell them and how much money you can spend, but the type is the most important thing.”

Lucas said it was not a deliberate plan to target mares with international pedigrees, but that Lady Oracle had the quality and was in foal to a highly commercial stallion.

“I didn't really come here to target them, but they are great pages and good pedigrees. She is in foal to the right horse, too, with a nice early service,” Lucas told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“I don't really see any downside to these mares. Quality mares like this you have to pay that sort of money for I believe. All you just have to do is hope the foal comes out with all four legs facing the right direction and we really shouldn't have too much downside.

“I honestly thought we would have to pay a bit more for the mares today, I think we have bought very well today.”

Later on Day Three, Lucas also purchased Lot 1360, the Listed winner Lovetorn (Giant’s Causeway) in foal to Fastnet Rock (Danehill), for $450,000 on behalf of Phoenix Thoroughbreds.

Lovetorn, who is out of a half-sister to the dam of US Listed winner Outta Here (Dehere), Love All (Mt Livermore), is a half-sister to the Newcastle Spring Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) winner Lovemelikearock (Fastnet Rock) and is carrying a three-quarter sibling to that mare.

“She is a lovely type with a great pedigree page. I saw the Frankel that sold for $850,000 and she throws a cracking type,” Lucas said.

“If there was a downside it was only the late service date and it's not that late, I am sure we can overcome it. We are more than happy to take her home.”

Glastonbury Farms’ Duncan Grimley said Lovetorn was purchased in South Africa in foal to Frankel (Galileo) and was later sold to China Horse Club at the 2015 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale for $550,000.

Her Frankel colt made $850,000 at this year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the Glastonbury Farms draft when purchased by Katsumi Yoshida.

“We are very happy and she has gone to a good home with David, who is building up a great broodmare band,” Grimley told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“I bought her in South Africa and brought her out and she was in foal to Frankel Southern Hemisphere time. She has been a great mare to us.”

Grimley said the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale had been a tremendous success for industry stakeholders.

“The market has been a bit softer today, but that is the luck of the draw. Maybe (buyers are) running out of money, but it has still been a great market here and they (Magic Millions) have done a great job with all the people that are here,” he said.

Pins Mare Added To Harron’s Haul

A well-performed New Zealand two-year-old with a Danehill-free pedigree, Maritimo (Pins) was yesterday purchased in foal to Cambridge Stud stallion Tavistock (Montjeu) by James Harron Bloodstock for $575,000.

Consigned by Graeme Rogerson’s Dormello Stud, who was catalogued as Lot 1393, the Listed-winning Maritimo is out of Group Three-placed, Group One-performed mare Miracle Miss (O’Reilly) and was sent to stud for the first time last year.

Maritimo’s second dam, Mandate (Sound Reason), was a Listed-winning juvenile who also produced Group Three winner Dating (O’Reilly).

Friday 2 June 2017 Pins Mare Added To Harron’s Haul

“She is an absolutely stunning mare with very, very good bloodlines and obviously an outcross to Danehill blood,” Harron told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“She was a very talented two-year-old, so she is really going to suit the market over here. She will suit a lot of stallions here in Australia, so I am delighted to get her.”

Harron said the mating with Tavistock, the sire of Hong Kong Derby (HK Gr 1, 2000m) winner Werther and ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Tavago, also meant this year’s foal was likely to prove a quick return.

“She is a very strong mare and, physically, I think it will be a good mating (to Tavistock). It is a very nice package and a good family, so I am very excited.”

At the conclusion of Book One, James Harron Bloodstock purchased seven fillies and mares for an aggregate of $3,597,500 at an average of $513,929 including race mares Scarlet Rain (Manhattan Rain) for $950,000 and Petits Filous for $1,050,000 on Day One.

Tyreel Snaps Up Encosta De Lago Mare Damon Gabbedy of Belmont Bloodstock believes his client Tyreel

Stud can get a quick return from Miss Hufflepuff, who is by leading broodmare sire Encosta De Lago (Fairy King) and a sister to Hong Kong Listed winner Liberator.

On behalf of Tyreel Stud, Gabbedy went to $470,000 to secure the Rothwell Park-consigned rising seven-year-old mare, who was sold in foal to Darley stallion Exceed And Excel (Danehill).

Catalogued as Lot 1414, Miss Hufflepuff’s first foal is a weanling filly by Coolmore Stud stallion Pierro (Lonhro) and has a 15 September cover to Exceed And Excel.

Miss Hufflepuff is a daughter of European juvenile winner and Silken Glider Stakes (Listed, 1m) winner Miss Helga (Alzao), herself a sister to Canadian Grade Three winner Alexis and Listed winner Freshwater Pearl. Alexis is also the dam of Canadian Listed winner Mike Fox (Giant’s Causeway).

“She is an A-plus, glamourous type with a nice early service to Exceed

And Excel and Encosta De Lago is the champion broodmare sire in the country at the moment,” Gabbedy told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“She is from an upwardly mobile family and was purchased for Tyreel Stud who are building up a nice collection of broodmares.”

Tyreel Stud owner Linda Monds said Miss Hufflepuff was part of a strategy to increase the number of broodmares at their Hawkesbury Valley property.

“We are increasing our broodmare band with quality physical types that have a page with them,” Monds told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“If the foal is a reflection of what the broodmare shows us then being by Exceed And Excel we will be (able to enter it into any sale in Australia).”

The sale of Miss Hufflepuff completed a successful week for Rothwell Park.

“Selling Miss Hufflepuff ended a really good National Sale for Scott Irwin's Rothwell Park. He works so hard at it and he got his rewards today,” Rothwell Park representative John Holloway told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“We brought ten mares here and we sold the lot and the last was our highest mare to sell for $470,000. I think the buyers really got a bargain because the mare will have a foal in mid-August, and there aren't too many Exceed And Excels around now and when his progeny go to the sales they go through the roof.”

Holloway said the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Sale series had gone to another level and that Irwin’s planning in sending the right mares to the sale had paid off.

“We have had a very, very good sale, we just love the Magic Millions and the National Sale and we can't wait to get back again,” he said.

“The way Scott places these mares to their respective sales, he has that knack of being able to elect the right spots for them, whether it be weanlings, yearlings or mares and it's been another wonderful result for the team.”

Rothwell Park’s draft of ten mares achieved an aggregate of $2,225,000 at an average of $222,500.

National Broodmare Sale Cracks $100,000,000 Mark

The Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale set a new benchmark at the end of Book One yesterday, with 711 lots sold for an aggregate of $105,530,000, a record for the largest bloodstock auction in the Southern Hemisphere.

The average closed at $148,425, the median was $80,000 and the clearance rate was 83.45 per cent.

The leading buyer (by aggregate) was China Horse Club, with 13 fillies and mares joining the operation for a spend of $5,585,000 at an average of $429,615, while the Newstar Bloodstock partnership bought 20 lots at an average of $250,750 at an aggregate of $5,015,000 to finish Book One as the second leading purchaser.

"The overall figures for the sale are just stunning," Magic Millions managing director Vin Cox said.

"It's just a spectacular result for all those who participated. There was a lot of international competition on horses.

"Obviously the domestic market was very strong on the back of the huge year of results from the yearling sales around the country.

"The results speak volumes for the Australian industry generally and I'm just so very proud of the Magic Millions team. We threw a lot more horses onto every session and our auctioneers stepped up and sold at a quicker rate and as a result we got through the days a lot earlier than we anticipated.

"It was a big effort from everyone and I'm just so proud of everything that has happened," Cox summed up.

Nine For Your Song The Peter Robl-trained Music Addition (2 g ex Quality Coup by Elusive Quality) won over 1000 metres on debut at Gosford yesterday, providing the Widden Stud-based first season sire Your Song (Fastnet Rock) with his ninth winner. Your Song’s winners are headed by his Listed-winning daughter Split Lip and he sits at the head of the leading first season sires table in Australia by winners, four ahead of his nearest rival Golden Archer (Rock Of Gibraltar). He is also sitting second in the table by earnings behind Pierro (Lonhro). Aquis Gain Naming Rights To Gold CoastAquis Farm have secured the naming rights to the Gold Coast Turf Club (GCTC), with the racecourse set to be renamed Aquis Park from 1 August. As part of the new partnership, the track will undergo a series of renovations, while night racing could be introduced next season. "We are excited to enter this long-term partnership with Aquis, fast becoming an iconic brand in Australia," GCTC chief executive Steve Lines said. Aquis Farm chairman Tony Fung added that the deal was an example of the operation’s commitment to the racing and breeding industry in Queensland. "It is a further demonstration of the company's commitment to the Queensland racing and

breeding industries and the broader Queensland community," Fung said. Waller Pleased With Leading Qld Oaks PairChris Waller is pleased with the condition of Egg Tart (Sebring) and Dawn Wall (Fastnet Rock), who head a seven-strong challenge for the trainer in the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m) tomorrow. Egg Tart won the Schweppes Oaks (registered as the Australasian Oaks) (Gr 1, 2010m) at her last start, while Dawn Wall took out the Gold Coast Bracelet (Listed, 1800m) on 6 May. "(Egg Tart) can handle the wet better than a lot of horses but it was a good track (when she won) in Adelaide," Waller said. "Her second dam (Born To Be Queen) won a Metropolitan over 2600 metres so I would have had no problems with her over the longer distance. Dawn Wall has done plenty of work and Hugh Bowman is happy with her." Rudy Hunting Prize Money LandmarkRudy (Red Dazzler) will take a big step towards $1,000,000 in total prize money earnings if he can take out the P J O’Shea Stakes (Gr 2, 2200m) at Doomben tomorrow. The Helen Page-trained six-year-old has amassed $844,825 in earnings to date, and owner-breeder Tom Clarke is hopeful of a good run in the $200,000 Group Two. "Rudy owes us nothing and has given us

a lot of pleasure. But I would love for him to be remembered as a Queensland horse who won a million dollars," Clarke said. "The switch to Doomben hasn't hurt us, so here is hoping." Stradbroke Warm-Up For The VirginianThe Toby Edmonds-trained The Virginian (Hinchinbrook) is set to use tomorrow’s Moreton Cup (Gr 2, 1200m) at Doomben as a stepping stone to next week’s Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1350m). The four-year-old, who ran third in the Stradbroke Handicap last season, won the Chief De Beers Quality (Listed, 1050m) at his last start, and Edmonds believes tomorrow’s race will put him spot on for the $1,500,000 feature. "He had two trials before his comeback run including a good hit-out when he won at Deagon," Edmonds said. "But I think a run on Saturday will top him off nicely." Splurge On Recovery MissionNew Zealand sprinter Splurge (Savabeel) will look to get back on track in the Moreton Cup tomorrow after a disappointing run on his Australian debut in the BRC Sprint (Gr 3, 1350m) on 20 May. The Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards-trained gelding enjoyed a fine run of form in New Zealand earlier this preparation, but his performance at Doomben two weeks ago left Richards dumbfounded. happened in his last run, he did get a couple of bumps at the 800 metres so the only thing I can think of is maybe he stopped trying after that," Richards said. "His work has been good this week and I would like to see him jump cleanly this time and put him in the race and get his mind on the job.” Italia Bella Ready For The PhoenixTrainer Stuart Kendrick is confident of a good performance from Italia Bella (Fastnet Rock) in The Phoenix (Listed, 1200m) at Doomben tomorrow. The two-year-old filly, who holds an entry in Saturday week’s J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), remains a maiden after two career starts but ran third behind Tangled (Snitzel) in the BRC Champagne Classic (Gr 2, 1200m) at her last start. "She has obviously shown us a bit and we have started her in good races to date. Both her runs have been good and we are confident she is up to stakes company," Kendrick said. "Italia Bella is entered for next week's J J Atkins Stakes but we will get over Saturday before worrying about that." Weir Runners’ Flight DelayedPremier Victorian trainer Darren Weir has had to endure further travel disruption with Brisbane-bound runners, with the flight due to take High Church (High Chaparral) and Rageese (Street Cry) delayed by 24 hours. The pair were set to fly north on Wednesday, but their flight was grounded after an attempted hijacking forced a Malaysia Airlines flight to return to Melbourne, causing both runways to be temporarily closed. Rageese is set to run in the Moreton Cup while High Church is engaged in the P J O'Shea Stakes. Prized Icon SpelledJames Cummings has confirmed that Prized Icon (More Than Ready) has been spelled and will not tackle next week’s Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2200m). The dual Group One-winning colt, who finished down the field on a Heavy 8 track in the Grand Prix Stakes (Gr 3, 2200m) at Eagle Farm at his last start, will head to the paddock and return in the spring. Cummings, who will take over as head Godolphin Australia trainer from 1 August, added that a new trainer had yet to be found for Prized Icon.

Miss Vista To Moonee ValleyConnections of Miss Vista (Show A Heart) have opted to aim the mare at a Benchmark 78 (1000m) at Moonee Valley tomorrow rather than a stakes race in Brisbane. Trainer George Osborne had considered tackling the Lightning Handicap (Listed, 1050m) at Doomben with the four-year-old, but after discussions with owner Dick Karreman the decision was taken to remain in Melbourne. "I spoke to Dick and he had a fair bit to do with the work they did at Eagle Farm and he didn't like (the track) at all," Osborne said. "I know they've transferred the meeting to Doomben but it's doing all the work of two tracks and so we've decided to stay at home (for better ground).”

Shiraz Set To ReturnShiraz (Zariz) is set to have his first start since chasing home Winx (Street Cry) in the Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) in February. The seven-year-old, who won a 1000 metre Wyong barrier trial on 22 May, is set to run in the $100,000 Octagonal Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill tomorrow, and trainer Kim Waugh said he has thrived during his spell. "He's well. I'm very happy with the way he's been coming along. He just needed to freshen up. Most horses do after they run against Winx," Waugh said. "His trial was nice and the way he's been working is very pleasing.” Master Of Design To Greta WestMaster Of Design (Redoute’s Choice) will now stand at Greta West Stud in Victoria having begun his stud career at Swettenham Stud. Master Of Design has sired 23 winners to date and four stakes performers in Creativity, Creative Genius, Miss Wahoo and Kinetic Design. “He’s an emerging sire and is getting right among the winners,” Greta West stud master Laurie McCarthy said. “Now we’re looking ahead for some stakes wins next season.” Master Of Design’s 2017 fee has been set at $5,500 (inc GST), having stood for $15,000 in 2016. O’Shea To Reunite With McDonaldFormer Godolphin trainer John O’Shea has said he will link up with suspended jockey James McDonald at the end of his 18-month ban for a betting offence. O’Shea will return to the

Randwick training ranks next season and said yesterday that he will be keen to team up with McDonald at the expiration of his suspension in May next year. "My goal is to have a stable strong enough that warrants James and keeps him busy on his return," O'Shea told Sky Sports Radio. "One of the things that inspired me the most was to make sure I could look after him the best I could and provide him with a significant amount of horses to keep him busy." Richard Freedman To Train At RosehillRichard Freedman has been allotted 16 boxes to train at Rosehill, the Australian Turf Club announced yesterday. Freedman, who had been overseeing pre-training on behalf of his brother Michael before starting up out of Hawkesbury recently, left a training partnership with his brothers in 2008 to work for the Australian Jockey Club before setting up his own business, Centratech, a year later. Leanne Henry To Ride TrackworkJockey Leanne Henry is set to resume trackwork as she continues her recovery from a broken collarbone suffered in a race fall at Warialda on 8 April, in which country jockey Darren Jones lost his life. Racing NSW spokesman Maurice Logue said that Henry would start riding trackwork on Tuesday with a view to returning to race-riding from 26 June. Melanie Bolwell was also injured in the incident at Warialda and is continuing her rehabilitation in Liverpool Hospital after spending several weeks in hospital at the Gold Coast. Germaine Suspension OverturnedApprentice jockey Trent Germaine can commence race riding immediately after VCAT overturned a three-month suspension yesterday. Germaine was hit with a three-month ban by Racing Victoria stewards, which was later reduced to two months on appeal, for forgetting to provide a urine sample at Warrnambool on 3 May. Germaine argued that the original punishment was severe and VCAT senior member Gerard Butcher sided with the jockey, reducing the penalty to four weeks which he has already served.

Ground Concerns For MaygroveCo-trainer Andrew Forsman harbours concerns over the forecast ground at Wanganui for Maygrove (Authorized), with the track currently rated a Heavy 10. The dual Group Two-winning six-year-old is set to run in the Wanganui Cup (Listed, 2040m) tomorrow, and Forsman, who trains in partnership with Murray Baker, said he would prefer further rain ahead of the NZ$50,000 race to loosen the surface. "He was disappointing (in the Rotorua Cup last start). He would have appreciated a bit of rain and a looser track and that's the one concern going into Wanganui," Forsman said. "We'd love to see a bit of rain for him before Saturday. But he's going really well. (Jockey) Matt (Cameron) galloped him and he was really happy with the way he's going." Vile Pleased With SlimlineTrainer Gary Vile is pleased with Slimline (Castledale) ahead of the mare’s Challenge Stakes (Listed, 1590m) bid at Wanganui tomorrow. The Listed-winning five-year-old, who ran second in the Rangitikei Gold Cup (Listed, 1550m) at Awapuni at her last start, has improved since being ridden with restraint at her last three starts, and Vile said the same tactics will be employed this weekend. "Danielle Johnson rode her back when she was fresh-up this year and she stormed home, so I've kept the same tactics and they seem to have worked with her," Vile said. "I think she has strengthened up too, finally. "Her work's been great, she's been working really well.” El Pistola RetiredGroup One placegetter El Pistola (El Hermano) has been retired from racing after fracturing a fetlock. The six-year-old mare finished second to Chenille (Pentire) in the Auckland Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) in March and will now join Cheval Stud’s broodmare band. "We extended her racing lease twice. It was great to see her syndicate members having so much fun," Frank Drummond, who stands El Pistola's sire El Hermano (Pins) at Cheval Stud, said. "Scans done yesterday revealed a fractured fetlock so she will return to Cheval Stud to join our

broodmare band. (Co-trainers) Kylie (Whiting) and Nathan (Hanley) did a great job training her from their South Waikato base."

Lee Freedman Hoping To Replace LaxonTrainer Lee Freedman looks set to take over the running of Laurie Laxon’s Singapore training operation. Laxon is to return to New Zealand later this year and he revealed yesterday that Lee Freedman, who currently trains at Flemington in partnership with his brother Anthony, is primed to move to Singapore. "With a bit of luck, if he gets his licence, he will take over my stable and just buy my company off me," Laxon told Brisbane's Radio TAB. "Lee came up and stayed with me last Wednesday and Thursday and met the Club executives. I think it was a very favourable meeting from all accounts, so we just hope he gets a licence." Beauty Only Works WellHong Kong raider Beauty Only (Holy Roman Emperor) pleased trainer Tony Cruz when working over 1400 metres on turf at Tokyo racecourse yesterday ahead of his tilt at the Yasuda Kinen (Gr 1, 1600m) on Sunday. “That was a serious gallop he had this morning,” Cruz said. “He jumped out and the plan was to go seven furlongs but the last two he was just relaxed. The most important was the 500 metre hit out down the back, he needed that good blow out because he’s a pretty lazy type of horse and to get him to top condition this is what he needs to do. He was blowing a bit and he should come on very strongly from this gallop.” Beauty Only will be joined by the John Size-trained Contentment (Hussonet) in the ¥222,080,000 feature.

19 For The DerbyA total of 19 runners were declared for the Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) yesterday, with Cliffs Of Moher (Galileo) heading a six-strong challenge from trainer Aidan O’Brien. The colt was drawn in barrier 13 and is currently disputing favouritism with the John Gosden-trained Cracksman (Frankel) (barrier seven) in the £1,625,000 Classic. Among O’Brien’s sextet is Venice Beach (Galileo), a Group Three-winning

half-brother to former top-class racemare Danedream (Lomitas) who has drawn barrier nine, while the Saeed bin Suroor-trained trio of Dubai Thunder (Dubawi), Best Solution (Kodiac) and Benbatl (Dubawi) were drawn in barriers one, eight and 16 respectively. First Derby Runner For WilliamsLeading Australian owner Lloyd Williams is set to have his first runner in the Derby at Epsom tomorrow. Williams owns Rekindling (High Chaparral), who is trained by Joseph O’Brien, and the colt will bid to improve on his recent fourth place finish in the Dante Stakes (Gr 2, 1m2.5f) at York from barrier 15. "It is my first English Derby runner and it's good because this is Joseph's first runner," Williams told Racing.com. "He's won the race twice as a jockey and he's been with his father, who has had a bit of success from time to time. He's in good order the horse and Joseph is happy with him." Eminent Pleases MeadeTrainer Martyn Meade is confident that Eminent (Frankel) is heading into tomorrow’s Derby in peak condition. The Group Three-winning colt, who is raced by prominent New Zealand breeder Sir Peter Vela, finished sixth in the 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) last month but is expected to improve for the step up to a mile and a half. "He's bucking and kicking and squealing, and ready for action on Saturday. He's looking good and I'm very pleased with him,” Meade told the Racing Post. "It looks sure to be a big field, but so long as he doesn't meet traffic problems that shouldn't be a problem. I think he'll just be taking it easy coming down the hill, and I'm hoping it will be in the straight that he does most of his best work.”

Pilley Replaces Mangan After BHA ActionRank outsider Diore Lia (Yeats) will be ridden by apprentice Patrick Pilley in the Derby after the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) stepped in to prevent Gina Mangan from riding the filly. The three-year-old has been switched to the care of trainer John Jenkins after original trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam voiced her concerns over running the twice-raced maiden in the Derby. However, after the BHA blocked Mangan from

Page 20: What's On - ANZ Bloodstock News · 2019-08-20 · The Burke Bloodstock-consigned and former Lindsay Park-trained Gregers, ... Petits Filous (Street Boss), who on Tuesday was sold

riding at Epsom, citing the jockey’s lack of experience, owner-breeder Richard Aylward has responded by booking Pilley for the ride on the 1000/1 shot. "Poor Gina has been crying up in the yard. I am disgusted with the BHA for what they have done,” Aylward told the Racing Post.

Kevin Ryan Yard QuarantinedThe stable of Yorkshire-based trainer Kevin Ryan has been quarantined due to an outbreak of the equine herpes virus EHV-1. Ryan, who has prepared the likes of Group One winner’s The Grey Gatsby (Mastercraftsman) and Astaire (Intense Focus) in recent seasons, will not be able to make any entries until the BHA are satisfied his yard is clear of the virus. "Cases of the neurological form of EHV-1 are occasional and, while the disease can be extremely serious for the affected horses, with proper surveillance and disease control the virus can usually be effectively contained,” David Sykes, BHA director of equine health and welfare, said.

BHA Release Annual ReportThe BHA has published its annual report and accounts for 2016, with the report showing growth in areas such as participation, ownership, betting, viewing, field sizes and horses in training. BHA chairman Steve Harman said the future was bright for British racing, with a replacement for the flawed levy system which funded the sport previously announced in April. “Racing made good progress in 2016 through having in place a clear growth strategy, strong governance and strong leadership both within the BHA and across the sport,” Harman said. “The additional revenues secured from April 2017 via the replacement Levy represent the start, rather than the end, of a journey towards long-term sustainable growth.” No Prix Du Jockey Club For Al Wukair The Andre Fabre-trained Al Wukair (Dream Ahead) will miss Sunday's Prix du Jockey Club (Gr 1, 2100m) at Chantilly. The Al Shaqab Racing-owned colt was last seen running third behind

Churchill (Galileo) in the 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket last month, but his trainer is reportedly not happy with the colt’s well-being and has advised his owners to miss the French Classic. "Andre wasn't happy with him, he didn't think he was 100 per cent, so sadly he will miss the race,” Harry Herbert, Al Shaqab's racing manager, said. Vale Dori Set For Beholder MileThe Bob Baffert-trained Vale Dori (Asiatic Boy) is in prime condition ahead of the Beholder Mile (Gr 1, 8f) at Santa Anita tomorrow. The four-year-old filly has won each of her last five starts, including the Santa Margarita Stakes (Gr 1, 9f) in March, and she is set to face Stellar Wind (Curlin) in the US$400,000 Grade One tomorrow, whom she chased home in the Zenyatta Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f) in October. "We've aimed for this race like it was our Breeders' Cup," Baffert told Bloodhorse.com. "The last time we (faced Stellar Wind), we ran a bad third, but she's coming off all those wins now. She's training well and confidence is not going to be an issue. The only way we're going to find out is by racing."

The impressive Australian debut victory of the New Zealand filly Melody Belle (Commands) in taking out Saturday’s BRC Sires’ Produce

Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) provided one of the bright moments on what proved a lamentable day at Eagle Farm.

Racing on a Heavy 8 track, despite clear skies and basically no rain for a week, Eagle Farm’s controversial track presented racing far removed from the days when it was widely regarded as one of the best in the country.

To understand what has resulted in seeing quality horses, many proven performers on affected tracks, fail dismally appears a mystery at this stage but the fact remains that it is clearly odd in the extreme to see horses beaten so far, 20 lengths plus in a number of races and 80 lengths plus in the Grand Prix Stakes (Gr 3, 2200m).

Even the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Prized Icon (More Than Ready) looked nothing like a dual Group One winner when he dropped out from the home turn to finish 11th, beaten 27 lengths in the Grand Prix Stakes.

Hopefully a solution can be found to return Eagle Farm to somewhere near the standard it was renowned for, in the meantime the remainder of the feature Brisbane meetings has been transferred to nearby Doomben.

But some horses did manage to cope with Saturday’s track and Melody Belle was clearly one of them winning by four and three quarter lengths, claiming favouritism for tomorrow weeks’ J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) in the process.

After beginning quickly, Opie Bosson eased Melody Belle to travel in fourth place before racing away in the straight to score brilliantly, handling the conditions very well.

Time for the 1400 metre journey was 1:25.66 with the first 800 metres in a solidly run 48.29 with the last 600 metres in 37.37.

Racing And Sports rated times for the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes as being 0.41 (per

200m) slower than average - the adjusted times therefore being 1:22.79, with the first 800 metres in a quick 46.65 and the last 600 metres in 36.14.

Melody Belle showed her quality in coming off a solid early pace and ran the 1400 metre journey out strongly suggesting that the Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards-trained filly should be suited by the longer 1600 metres of the J J Atkins Stakes.

The win was Melody Belle’s fourth from six starts to date, which includes the Karaka Million (RL, 1200m) at Ellerslie on 29 January and the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Awapuni on 1 April.

The feature race at Eagle Farm meeting, the Kingsford Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) was taken out impressively by the Kris Lees-trained Clearly Innocent (Not A Single Doubt).

After racing back in third last place in the 13-horse field, behind a good pace, Clearly Innocent made a wide move approaching the 600 metres and after hitting the front at the 100 metres, he raced away to win easily by three lengths.

The leader and noted wet-tracker Jungle Edge (Dubawi) held on for second with Counterattack (Redoute’s Choice) three and three quarter lengths further back and multiple Group One winner Blackheart Bart (Blackfriars)

fifth, beaten 9.1 lengths, in the testing conditions.

Time for the 1300 metre journey was 1:19.09 (12.16 200m rate) equivalent to 1400 metres in 1:25.17.

Racing And Sports rated the Kingsford-Smith Cup as being 0.39 slow (per 200 metres) and the adjusted time for the 1300 metres was 1:16.55 (11.77 200m rate) equivalent to 1400 metres in 1:22.44.

While Queensland staged the feature meeting last weekend, metropolitan racing in Sydney was at Randwick and Sandown Lakeside in Melbourne where two juveniles provided some respective highlights.

The Godolphin-raced colt Kementari (Lonhro) could not have been any more impressive in taking out the Two-Year-Old Plate (1400m) at Randwick.

Having only his second race start, Kementari after a quick beginning, settled in third place on

the rails before easing into clear running at the 300 metres. He then sprinted quickly and really took the eye with the way he dashed away over the closing stages to score by four lengths.

Time for the 1400 metres was 1:24.83 on a Slow 6 track and a feature of the win was Kementari’s closing sectional times which stamped him as a quality colt.

Kementari was clocked to run his last 200 metres in 22.98, last 600 metres in 34.70 – which was the fastest of any winner on the card for that section, last 800 metres in 47.04 and last 1000 metres in 59.30.

They are good times on a firm track but very good times on a Slow 6 track, which was rated by Racing And Sports as being 0.58 slow (per 200m) on average when measure against their Standard Time.

Initially it was indicated that the Godolphin colt would head to Brisbane for the upcoming J J Atkins Stakes but the stable subsequently

advised that Kementari would now be spelled with the spring carnivals in Sydney and Melbourne in mind.

The other juvenile to indicate his potential was the Darren Weir-trained colt Cliff’s Edge (Canford Cliffs) who was an impressive all-the-way winner of the Two-Year-Old Handicap (1200m) at Sandown Lakeside.

Also having only his second race start, Cliff’s Edge went to the front before lifting the pace significantly from the 600 metres point. He grabbed a break shortly after straightening and went on to score by a length and a quarter in a time of 1:11.01 on a Good 4 track.

Cliff’s Edge’s closing sectional times were very good with his last 400 metres in 22.72, last 600 metres in 33.38, last 800 metres in 45.26 with his final 1000 metres in 56.96.

Both Cliff’s Edge and especially Kementari are two late developing colts that look set for better things in the spring.

Won:2YO Maiden Plate, 1200m, Warwick Farm, 31 May

After showing promise with a late-closing third on debut in the Woodlands Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Scone on 13 May, I Am Excited impressed in winning at Warwick Farm at her second race start.

She missed the break from her wide drawn in barrier ten before settling in second last place in the 11-runner field before making her move under Kerrin McEvoy between runners nearing the home turn.

She got a split at the 200 metres and sprinted quickly to take the lead at the 50 metres, going on to score a cosy half a length victory over Irish Success (Excelebration) in second place.

I Am Excited is one of three named foals out of the winning mare Lady Beckworth (General Nediym), making her a half-sister to the multiple stakes winner and Group Two-placed filly Flippant (Hinchinbrook).

This is also the family of multiple Group One-winning filly Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet Rock) and Group One winner Commanding Jewel (Commands), while her third dam Pass The Peace (Alzao) won the Cheveley Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) as a juvenile in Britain.

Lady Beckworth missed to Exceed And Excel (Danehill) last year having produced a colt by Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock) last October.
