The Mighty Fed (All Too Hard) will start a campaign aimed at the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1,

1600m) with a low key barrier trial at Rosehill this morning.

The David Payne-trained rising three-year-old gelding won two of his three starts during an autumn campaign, with both victories coming in Sydney metropolitan grade juvenile races.

The $310,000 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale graduate was fourth to Condor Heroes (Not A Single Doubt) at Warwick Farm on debut, beaten six and a half lengths, but he has won his two subsequent starts at Warwick Farm and Randwick.

bred by Segenhoe Thoroughbreds Australia, entered for heat eight at Rosehill today, a two-year-old colts and geldings barrier trial over 900 metres, with Keagan Latham booked to partner the gelding in the hit out.

“He has come back well. He is quite a laid back chap, so he just goes around and you don’t even know he is there,” Payne told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“We always thought he had a lot of ability and I was disappointed after his first start as I thought he would run better, but I just think he got a bit of stage fright.”

The Mighty Fed could resume in The Rosebud (Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill on 12 August and race through to both the Golden Rose Stakes on 23 September and the Caulfield Guineas on 14 October.

“We are aiming him at the Golden Rose, so he could go to the Rosebud first up, or one of those races, or the Run To The Rose, but we will see how he trials,” Payne said.

“I’ve got a young bloke Keagan Latham riding (The Mighty Fed) in the trial tomorrow and we haven’t locked in any jockeys for him yet (for race day).”

Meanwhile, Payne is aiming another rising three-year-old by All Too Hard (Casino Prince), a filly out of dual Group Two winner Gallant Tess (Galileo) called All Too Soon, at the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

The two-year-old filly made her debut at Rosehill on 1 July, finishing fourth to Hualalai (Street Cry), before running third to the unbeaten Peter

and Paul Snowden-trained colt Hypnotist (Snitzel) at Canterbury in a 1550 metre juvenile race.

“Both my All Too Hard's are above average as I have got a filly called All Too Soon and she’ll be aimed at the Flight Stakes,” he said.

“She ran third the other day and was very unlucky and she’ll be running (on 29 July) at Rosehill over 1500 metres.”

Payne said he supported Vinery Stud-based All Too Hard at the yearling sales this year on the back of the early talent The Mighty Fed and All Too Soon had shown him in trackwork at Rosehill.

Tuesday 18 July 2017 Trainer Payne Has Belief In The Mighty Fed

He purchased a colt by the stallion from Vinery Stud at the 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale out of Group Two winner Rock Me Baby (Rock Of Gibraltar) for $120,000.

“I have already supported All Too Hard again. I bought a nice one at the Gold Coast for the same owner as The Mighty Fed, so I think he is going to make it,” the experienced trainer said. All Too Hard will stand for a fee of $44,000 (inc GST) at Vinery Stud in 2017.

Meanwhile, fellow Rosehill-trained potential Golden Rose Stakes contenders Menari (Snitzel) and Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) will barrier trial on their home track today.

The Gerald Ryan-trained stablemates will trial in heats six and seven respectively, both over 900 metres.

Trapeze Artist, a winner of two of his five starts as a juvenile, has not raced since finishing third in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), while Menari was also spelled after finishing tenth in the same race at Randwick on 1 April.

"They have both come back big, strong colts," Ryan said."Trapeze Artist will be on a path to the Golden Rose while we will

decide after he gets going where Menari heads. I think he might be a sprinter but he will show us which way to go."

At Newcastle this morning, multiple Group One winner Le Romain (Hard Spun), a rising five-year-old trained by Kris Lees, will have his second barrier trial this campaign as he prepares for a second up tilt at the $1,000,000 Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on 2 September.

A Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m) winner in the autumn, Le Romain is entered for heat three over 1000 metres at Newcastle after being given a quiet barrier trial at Wyong on 5 July when fourth over 845 metres.

Le Romain is scheduled to resume in the Missile Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick on 5 August before transferring to Melbourne for the lucrative Group One race and dodging champion mare Winx (Street Cry) in the process.

Tatt’s Mile For SheiswhatsheisRising six-year-old mare Sheiswhatsheis (Bernardini) will bid to make a stakes breakthrough in the Tattersall’s Mile (Listed, 1600m) at Doomben on Saturday. The multiple stakes placegetter was a wide-margin winner over 1640 metres at Doomben at her last start, and trainer Tony Gollan said he is keen to register a stakes win her ahead of a broodmare career. "She has shown she can run 2000 metres with her third in the Toowoomba Cup. But she is very good at Doomben and around the 1600 metre mark," Gollan said. "Hopefully, we will get a late season Doomben surface with a bit of the sting out it. She is owned by Glenlogan Park who are very keen to get black type with her before she goes to stud." Click here to view the Doomben nominations.

Man Of His Word Could Stay In SydneyGold Coast-trained four-year-old Man Of His Word (Lope De Vega), who was runner-up in Saturday’s Winter Stakes (Listed, 1400m), could stay in Sydney for a race at Randwick. The talented Bruce Hill-trained gelding has been placed at his past three starts and is nominated for a $100,000 Open Handicap (1800m) on Saturday. "He is a

horse who needs a big track. He has been so unlucky at home on small tracks," Hill said. "We wanted to run him in the Stradbroke Handicap but when they switched it from Eagle Farm that was cancelled. He is not suited at Doomben. I will see how he is during the week but I'd like to try him over 1800 metres. We'll give him a break after that and look at spring options."

Magic Alibi To Run At RandwickMagic Alibi (Star Witness) is likely to take her place in the Fillies and Benchmark 85 Handicap (1100m) at Randwick as a opposed to the July Sprint (1100m) at the same meeting. The Gerald Ryan-trained four-year-old mare returned to winning form last start at Rosehill over 1200 metres when successful, but will drop back in distance at Randwick. "I will probably accept with her in both and have a look at the fields but I am leaning to the fillies and mares race," Ryan said. "I think she is better over the 1100 than 1200 and even though she won over that distance last time, I put her in the race because it wasn't big in numbers." trained three-year-old filly missed the autumn. The lightly raced filly, who has won twice and been placed three times from five starts, has not run since her Group Two success at Flemington on 29 October last year. Tiamo Grace is one of 34 nominations for the Super Vobis 3YO Fillies Handicap (1400m) at Flemington. "Her action just wasn't quite right so we pulled the pin and decided to concentrate on the spring," Weir told Racing.com. "She got to the 2000 metres of the Wakeful and we've been looking forward to getting her to a mile-and-a-half and see what she can do."

Distance Test For Antipas At FlemingtonTony McEvoy-trained two-year-old Antipas (Testa Rossa) is set to tackle the Byerley Handicap (1800m) at Flemington on Saturday. The winner of the race earns ballet exemption from both the VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) and VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m), and the gelding is expected to relish the test of stamina. "He had his first run at Geelong (over 1300 metres) a couple of weeks ago and showed that he would be looking for that kind of trip," McEvoy's Melbourne stable foreman Michael Shepherdson said. "It looked like he showed good stamina and ran through the line at Geelong. He's really trained on well." Click here to view Saturday’s Flemington nominations.

Supido Jockey Conundrum For KentTrainer Mick Kent faces a difficult decision over which jockey he will choose to ride Supido (Sebring) in the Bletchingly Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield on 29 July. The five-year-old has been ridden predominantly by Luke Nolen and Craig Williams during his career, and with Nolen unavailable for the ride Kent may look to Williams, who is involved in a battle for the Melbourne jockeys’ premiership with his apprentice Beau Mertens. "That could be a tricky one," Kent told Racing.com. "If Luke doesn't ride him, Craig generally does so that might give us a bit to think about moving onto the Bletchingly."

Caulfield Cup Aim For Abbey MarieGroup One winner Abbey Marie (Redoute’s Choice) could be aimed at the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) by trainer Mick Kent after the mare proved that she had overcome a hamstring injury. The Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) winner missed the spring due to illness and suffered a hamstring injury when 12th in the Coolmore Legacy (registered as Queen Of The Turf Stakes) (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick on 8 April, which ended her campaign. "She's had a good break, she's come back and we're sort of on a Caulfield Cup prep,” Kent told Racing.com. "We'd like to see her get to that distance. That's where she's going to be effective so we'll just head along that route. She's come up really well. I just hope she gets back to her best." Shinn Returns At Warwick FarmBlake Shinn will return to Sydney racing with rides in six of the seven races at the Warwick Farm midweek meeting on Wednesday. Shinn has spent the past five weeks in the United States, riding 11 winners at Arlington Park in Chicago. "Beyond my wildest dream did I imagine walking away with 11 wins. Thx everyone that helped along this journey. It's been one hell of a ride!" Shinn tweeted after his final day in America on Sunday.

We’ve Got This Wins Cranbourne TrialGroup Two placegetter We’ve Got This (Hard Spun) ran out a comfortable winner of a 1000

metre barrier trial at Cranbourne yesterday and is on course to return in the Aurie’s Star Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) at Flemington on 12 August. The Greg Eurell-trained gelding was partnered by Craig Newitt in the trial, and the jockey is hoping he keeps the ride in the next month’s Group Three. "He went super, it wasn't about how fast he went or how big a margin he could put on them, he was just out there to keep him ticking over but he felt terrific," Newitt told Racing.com. "The plan is for him to resume in the Aurie's Star and I'm hoping I get the ride.”

V’Landys Defends NSW ChangesPeter V’Landys has defended changes to the Racing NSW schedule which will see clashes with major fixtures in Victoria. The inaugural The Everest (1200m) will be run at Randwick on 14 October, the same day as the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), and V’Landys said the state’s were in competition with each other. "We are in competition with each other," V'Landys told Melbourne Radio RSN927. "If a NSW punter bets with a corporate bookmaker on a Melbourne meeting, we get nothing. We are competing for the wagering dollar. My job is to the maximise the revenues for NSW racing and that's exactly what I'm going to do and I should have every opportunity to do so in any manner I have at my disposal.”

Bashford’s Disqualification ReducedTrainer Cliff Bashford has had his disqualification for an animal cruelty-related offence reduced on appeal. Bashford was initially banned for 18 months by Racing NSW stewards, but following the outcome of his appeal on Monday the governing body have reduced his disqualification to 12 months, meaning he will be able to recommence training in July next year.

Cartwright Suspension ReducedApprentice jockey Georgina Cartwright has had a suspension for careless riding reduced on appeal. Cartwright had been originally suspended for 14 meetings after she was found to have caused interference aboard Narioka (Strategic) at Geelong on 11 July, but the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on Monday

reduced her ban to 12 meetings, meaning she will be able to resume race riding from 26 July.

Currie Breaks 100 Winners For SeasonA treble at Toowoomba on Sunday has pushed local trainer Ben Currie past 100 Queensland winners for the first time in his career. Currie led in Bella Occhi (High Chaparral), Mishani Seeka (Poet’s Voice) and Real Mystique (Real Saga) at Sunday's meeting to reach 100.5 winners in Queensland for the season. He now leads the state title by four and a half wins from Tony Gollan, who has the metropolitan title in his keeping with 74 city winners. Currie, who has only been training for six years, has trained two winners in New South Wales to give him 102.5 winners overall.

New Zealand

Pacorus On TrackStakes-winning Chris Wood-trained stayer Pacorus (Tavistock) remains on course for a tilt at the Taumarunui Gold Cup (Listed, 2200m) on 29 July after running fourth over an unsuitable distance in an Open Handicap (1600m) at Te Rapa on Saturday. The rising six-year-old gelding, who has won nine of his 31 starts, has reportedly come through Saturday’s run in good order. “The 1600 metres was a touch short and there wasn’t a lot of tempo, but he pulled up well,” Wood said.

Low Key Build Up For La DiosaGroup One-winning filly La Diosa (So You Think) is likely to have a low key preparation in the spring. The rising four-year-old won the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in November and the Surround Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick in February, but she was below that form in her three subsequent starts. "She's been back for three weeks and she's ticking over nicely," said Matt Brown, who trains in partnership with his wife Mandy. "We're not making any great plans and she'll probably have a quiet year and we'll see how she comes up with maybe a couple of starts at the Riccarton Carnival." The Coupland’s Bakeries Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) and Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) are potential targets for La Diosa.

Rangipo Heading To HastingsTrainer Tony Pike is planning a top-level campaign at the Hawke’s Bay Carnival with rising five-year-old Rangipo (Stryker). The 2016 New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner finished sixth in the Japan New Zealand International Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) at his last start in March, and he will be given entries in the Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1, 1400m) (2 September), Windsor Park Plate (Gr 1, 1600m) (23 September) and Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m) (7 October). "We'll be entering Rangipo for all three of the Group Ones at Hastings," Pike said. "He's starting to breeze up now and hopefully he will come up quickly enough and at this stage I am very happy with him. As long as he progresses well, he'll be going for the first two and ideally all three."

Showtenaire To WanganuiThe O’Leary’s Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Wanganui has been earmarked as an early spring target for promising filly Showtenaire (Showcasing). The Graeme Sanders and Debbie Sweeney-trained rising three-year-old has won one of her three starts, and the NZ$50,000 Listed race on 9 September will be her first major assignment in the new season. “When she won at Auckland the very heavy track took its toll a bit,” Sweeney said. “She had been in work for a long time and deserved a freshen up. She’s having a spell and when she comes back she’ll head toward Wanganui.”

Melody Belle In Top CompanyGroup One-winning two-year-old Melody Belle (Commands), a juvenile filly trained by Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards, rates up with the best two-year-olds Te Akau Racing has been associated with, according to David Ellis of Te Akau Stud. Melody Belle won four starts at two including the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) in Queensland as well as the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). “It’s not easy to compare horses and we’ve had champion two-year-olds Darci Brahma, Maroofity, Warhorse and War Affair, but the way Melody

Belle won those three big races said to me that in thirty years of buying, syndicating, and training horses that she’s as good a two-year-old as we’ve ever had,” Ellis said.

50 For Iffraaj

Progressive three-year-old Araaja (3 f ex Roshanak by Spinning World) won the Prix Madame Jean Couturie (Listed, 2000m) at Vichy yesterday to provide Haunui Farm shuttler Iffraaj (Zafonic) with his 50th stakes winner. The Antoine de Watrigant-trained filly had won her last two starts at Bordeaux and Toulouse and she made a successful step up in class under Mickael Barzalona, beating Golden Legend (Doctor Dino) by a neck with Dream Awhile (War Front) a further half a length behind in third. Iffraaj will stand for a fee of NZ$25,000 (plus GST) in the spring.

Barney Roy To Miss Glorious GoodwoodGroup One-winning three-year-old Barney Roy (Excelebration) has been ruled out of Glorious Goodwood by trainer Richard Hannon. The Godolphin-raced colt won the St James’s Palace Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Royal Ascot last month before finishing a close second in the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) at his most recent start. Bred by Eliza Park International, Barney Roy will not take up his entry in the Sussex Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) on 2 August, held on the second day of the five-day meeting at Goodwood, and will instead be aimed at the International Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2.5f) at York before the Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) at Ascot on 21 October.

Irish Leger For Order Of St GeorgeOrder Of St George (Galileo) is also set to miss Glorious Goodwood, with trainer Aidan O’Brien earmarking the Irish St Leger (Gr 1, 1m6f) at the Curragh on 10 September as his next assignment. The Lloyd Williams-part owned entire was a close second behind Big Orange (Duke Of Marmalade) in the Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m4f) at Royal Ascot last month but will not clash with that rival in the Goodwood Cup (Gr 1, 2m) on 1 August, with US Army Ranger (Galileo) set to represent Ballydoyle instead. "The plan now is to run US Army Ranger as Order Of St George won't go,” O’Brien told the Racing Post. “He's going to have a midsummer break with an autumn campaign in mind. We'll hopefully bring him back for races like the Irish St Leger."

Targets Outlined For BrametotDual Group One winner Brametot (Rajsaman) is likely to have two starts before the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) in October. The Jean-Claude Rouget-trained and Al Shaqab-raced colt, who won the Prix du Jockey Club (Gr 1, 2100m) at his last start in June, is likely to be aimed at the Prix Guillaume d'Ornano (Gr 2, 2000m) at Deauville on 15 August and the Irish Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) in September ahead of the Chantilly feature. The son of Star Witness sold for $400,000 to Magic Millions, as agent, out of the Widden Stud draft at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Sent to Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes by owner Alan Bell, he won his second start over 1100 metres at Randwick en route to running a close second to Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) in the Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield.

Following creditable runs in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), in which he ran fifth and sixth respectively, Star Turn returned at three this season to take the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at the expense of Golden Slipper Stakes winner Capitalist (Written Tycoon) who finished fourth.

“Capitalist was the benchmark but Star Turn has come on and matured,” Michael Hawkes declared. “He’s bigger, stronger and is switched on which makes the difference.”

That performance marked the beginning of a successful three-year-old campaign for Star Turn, one in which he never finished outside of the top three in seven starts.

He went on to win the Schillaci Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) in a time of 1:02.89 against older horses at Caulfield in October before running third to Flying Artie in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington after attempting to make all the running.

“Give us the winner’s run and we win, simple as that,” John Hawkes said after the race.

It was announced that Vinery Stud had purchased an interest in the colt after that performance and their faith was vindicated when Star Turn

returned to run a close third to Terravista (Captain Rio) in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m), third to Redkirk Warrior (Notnowcato) in the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) and third to Silent Sedition (War Chant) in the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Moonee Valley in March.

Star Turn is one of four winners out of Golden Delicious (Made Of Gold), who is also responsible for the Group Two-placed Straight Gold (Stratum).

Golden Delicious was a talented and tough performer herself whose 13 wins included the Prince Of Wales Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and two renewals of the Bolton Sprint Handicap (Listed, 1200m).

She is also grandam of this season’s high-class juvenile Eden Roc (Star Witness), another son of Star Witness who ran third in the Lonhro Plate (Listed, 1100m) in February. Eden Roc sold for $900,000 to George Moore at the inaugural Inglis Chairman’s Sale in March.

Star Turn will stand for an introductory fee of $22,000 (inc GST).

Will Supido Fire Up Another Gilgai Group One?

Gilgai Farm’s Rick Jamieson has always had a huge opinion of Supido, winner of Saturday’s Group Three Sir John Monash Stakes over 1100m at Caulfield.

Interviewed around 15 months ago - shortly after another of his homebreds in The Quarterback had won the Group One Newmarket Handicap - Jamieson mused that Supido could soon follow suit with a win at racing’s elite level.

By that stage the Mick Kent trained, Supido, had won his last four in town - none at stakes level - and would win twice more down the straight at Flemington before a half length third behind Black Heart Bart in the Group One Goodwood Handicap. Close, but no cigar.

Resuming nine months later with a last of nine in the Group One Lightning, Supido ran third in the Group Two Challenge Stakes behind a pair of Group One winners in English and Redzel, but was again near last at his next start in the Group One Galaxy in March.

It was the Supido of old in the Monash however and the now 5YO entire really does appear to be knocking on the door of Group

One glory, and is likely to get his chance in the Memsie Stakes over 1200m at Caulfield on 2 September.

“That was a very good win in the Monash,” Jamieson points out. “It will be interesting to

see how he takes the step up to 1200m, but I’ve always thought he was a Group One horse.”

(Supido is the 31st stakes winner for the Widden Stud based, Sebring, and is from Jamieson’s Brian’s Time mare, Lady Succeed).

“She (Lady Succeed) has been a bit of a problem mare and had a few issues along the way, but it’s a mighty pedigree - Machiavellian’s family - and she’s had four winners from as many to race.

“I sold the two year old out of Lady Succeed for $100,000 at last year’s Inglis Melbourne Premier and kept a share in him. He’s with Mick

“I’VE NEVER BASED MY DECISIONS REGARDING STALLION SELECTION ON

COMMERCIAL PRACTICALITIES.” RICK JAMIESON, BREEDER

(Kent) as well and I really don’t expect to hear too much more about him for the next 12 months or so.

“She (Lady Succeed) produced a full sister to Supido last August and actually got back in foal to Sebring last year, but slipped along the way. The Japanese horse, Real Impact, might be an option for her this spring, although you’d really have to consider sending her back to Sebring.”

Jamieson’s Gilgai Farm actually produced a running treble at Caulfield on Saturday with the Snitzel pair Portion Control and Nikitas (a half brother to Jameka) both leading into Supido’s Monash.

The breeder of Black Caviar, Jamieson has had a tremendous couple of seasons via The Quarterback (Newmarket), Jameka (VRC Oaks, Caulfield Cup, The BMW), Sebring’s Lucky Bubbles (Hong Kong’s Group One Chairman’s Sprint Prize in May) and now Supido, and believes this is the first time he’s had two stakes winners by the same stallion.

“I’ve never based my decisions regarding stallion selection on commercial practicalities,” Jamieson adds. “The dams of both Supido and Lucky Bubbles were sent to Sebring before he had really started to hit his straps and I’m only swayed by my belief as to how the mare matches up to a particular stallion.”

Gilgai Farm has previously operated from a base of around 20 mares, but the population has practically doubled in the last year or so.

“I’ve currently got around 40 mares, the results from which won’t filter down for a couple of years yet,” Jamieson explains. “I’m spending a lot more time on my horses than I have previously and am really enjoying it. Especially when you get another Group winner!”

Jamieson is also excited about the prospects of Cable Bay, the multiple Group winning son of Invincible Spirit he imported to stand at Victoria’s Woodside Park Stud this season.

“It’s something of a personal project and has been fantastic,” Jamieson enthused. “Breeders submit their mares for consideration and I ultimately make the decision on whether to accept the nomination or not.

“This is definitely a different approach, but broodmare owners have really embraced it. They’re often a lot more curious as to why they’ve missed the cut.”

If Supido does win his Group One, just two days into the new covering season, expect to see a few more disciples lining up for the Jamieson jaunt.

Supido’s victory comes as no surprise to Three Bridges’ Toby Liston, who sold the Monash winner, on Jamieson’s behalf, for $190,000 at the 2013 Inglis Melbourne Premier.

“He (Supido) is just the best looking horse,” Liston recalls. “He was my dad’s (Peter) favourite yearling from that draft and is just such a classy type.

“That was a very good auction for Three Bridges, as we also sold the (Group Two) Alister Clark winner, Chill Party, and the stakes winners Exclusive Lass and Japhils, along with Lucky Bubbles … also on behalf of Gilgai Farm.

“With his strike rate, Rick is arguably the best breeder in Australia and is a freak with genetics. He just keeps on coming up with the winners. Great for him, great for Victoria. Great for Australia.”

Geoff Allendorf’s Luen On Star (Astronomer Royal) made it four wins from his five starts on the all weather surface with another

dominant performance in Saturday’s Class Three Handicap over 1050 metres.

Ridden by Andrew Calder, Luen On Star was quickly away and got to the lead in the early stages in a race with plenty of speed. Held together by Calder in the run until the 200 metres, the gelding then dashed away for a soft win.

Second placed Grateful Favors (Congrats) ran on well for second with the joint favorite Tak Fai Of Pins (Pins) a battling third.

Calder had plenty of praise for the three-year-old after the race who he rates highly and says will only improve with time

“That was a nice win in the end,” he said.“I was a bit worried about him before the

race because he got very worked up, but he jumped well today and was always going easy.

“I think Geoff (Allendorf) is going to give him a break now and he will come back better and stronger.”

Luen On Star registered a slick 1:01.90 for the 1050 metres which, on any day, would be comparable with Class Two company.

Geoff Allendorf purchased the gelding for $60,000 at the 2015 Inglis The Star Ready To Race Sale that was streamed live to the Macau Jockey Club members' lounge.

“The best thing about it all has been the patience of my owner Thomas Lau who agreed to leave him in Australia for an extra six months,” Allendorf said.

“He is a very highly strung horse and he would have went to pieces here as a two-year-old.

“We left him with Donna Grisedale at Kembla and he had already had two light preparations before he arrived here.”

An eye-catching runner was the fourth-placed Striking Achiever (Lonhro) who showed

great speed to go with Luen On Star, before fighting on strongly to be just edged out of a place.

A son of Lonhro (Octagonal), Striking Achiever made all to win a maiden over 1200 metres at Ruakaka in New Zealand when prepared by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young.

Gem Eagle (Reward For Effort) overcame a wide run in transit to take out Saturday’s feature event, the Monspace Cup (1350m) providing jockey Horace Lam with the first leg of a double.

From barrier eight, Gem Eagle was never better than three or four deep in the run but showed great courage down the straight after being headed by Evergreen Star (Sharp Humor) to hit the line strongly and win by three quarters of a length, with The Whirlwind (Henrythenavigator) close up in third.

Gem Eagle, a son of Reward For Effort (Exceed And Excel), has been handy money spinner on the sand for connections, with Saturday’s victory taking him up to four wins and six placed efforts from 15 starts in the enclave and close to HK$1,200,000 in prize money.

There’s no stopping the rising 11-year old Gauteng (More Than Ready) who once again showed his younger opponents a clean pair of heels in the 30-55 rated contest over his favourite 1350 metres distance on Saturday.

Ridden by Horace Lam, Gauteng flew the gates like a two-year-old and found himself with the run of the race to the home corner. The bay gelding had his job made a bit easier when the erratic River Dream (Starcraft) wanted to hang

Allendorf’s Star On The Sand

out around the turn presenting plenty of space through on the inside for him, and at the same time providing some inconvenience to race favourite Oriental Profit (Mastercraftsman).

Gauteng and Lam took full advantage of the incident and sped away to a clear lead, and although Oriental Profit tried vainly to cut the margin back, Gauteng was too strong running out a length winner at the line.

Australian-bred Gauteng has now had 175 career starts for 16 wins, 12 of those at the 1350 metres distance at Taipa, for prize money earnings in excess of HK$4,500,000.

Jockey Elvis Trujillo put himself on the scoreboard in Macau with a nice ride on Best Double (Dane Shadow) to win the Class Six over 1350 metres on Saturday.

Trujillo saved valuable ground when he switched back to the inside in the run from the 500 metres and powered home from Highspot (Manhattan Rain), with Four Season Health (Starcraft) in third.

Panamanian-born Trujillo has spent most of his riding career in the USA and is the latest addition to the riding ranks in Macau.

His credentials read well, with over 2,200 race wins including over 50 Graded races. His biggest race win to date came in the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (Gr 1, 7f) on Maryfield (Elusive Quality).
