Ole Kirk’s fee is the same as that set by

Kia Ora Stud for last season’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner

Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) and less than the $66,000 fee placed on

Godolphin’s champion three-year-old Bivouac (Exceed And Excel), who

raced on at four and was recently retired to stand at Darley’s Hunter Valley

base.

White yesterday revealed that Vinery had tested the market with Ole

Kirk’s proposed service fee at the recent Inglis Australian Easter Yearling

Sale and they received a big vote of confidence from breeders about where

he fitted among his freshman peers.

“We have had that figure in our head for quite some time and it was

what we thought was fair for him and we thought that’s where the other

two horses (Farnan and Bivouac) would be in the market as well,” he said.

“Obviously, the three of them are really well credentialled horses. They

were great racehorses with great pedigrees, so we felt that for sometime

that was where he was ($55,000).

“Talking to a few breeders at the recent Easter sale, we told them what

we were thinking and they were comfortable with it.”

Trained by Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes, Ole Kirk won the

Talindert Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at his first start, followed by unlucky third

in the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and fourth-placed finish

in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), while he rounded out his

four-start juvenile campaign by running third in the ATC Champagne

Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

He returned at three to finish runner-up to speedster Anders (Not

A Single Doubt) in the Rosebud Handicap (Listed, 1100m) and Rothfire

(Rothesay) in the Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) before asserting his

dominance when it mattered, taking out the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1,

1400m) and the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) two weeks alter.

It was that campaign which led to studs from NSW and Victoria,

principally Rosemont Stud, making substantial offers to buy the colt and

it was eventually Vinery Stud who won out.

Ole Kirk was retired after a three-start autumn campaign which

culminated in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), finishing with a

record of three wins from 11

starts and $2.15 million in prize-

money.

“I think he’ll get his fair

share of two-year-olds. He was

forward enough to win a stakes

race as a two-year-old down the

straight (at Flemington), which

is what All Too Hard did when

he was a two-year-old as well,

and he’s a neater sort of horse,”

White said.

“He is around 15.3 and-a-

half (hands) and he’s still got a

bit of growing and maturing to

do yet as he’s still only three.

“He was a $675,000 yearling, too, so you can see the quality in him.

He’s got a lovely attractive head, he’s really well balanced and I think,

physically, he’s going to complement a lot of mares.”

Bred by Gilgai Farm’s Rick Jamieson, who retained a share in the colt

during his racing career and now at stud, Ole Kirk is out of the unraced

Naturale (Bel Esprit), a sister to unbeaten mare Black Caviar and a half-

sister to champion three-year-old All Too Hard (Casino Prince), also a

mainstay of the Vinery Stud stallion roster.

He was purchased by Mark Player’s International Thoroughbred

Solutions at the 2019 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale on behalf

of managing owner Neil Werrett, a shareholder in Vinery Stud, where he

fetched the $675,000 figure.

“You only have to flick through a broodmare catalogue to see how

many mares have got a double cross of Danehill in their pedigree, so

having that outcross at that level is quite an advantage,” White said.

“Being a son of Written Tycoon, who has had the most incredible

season, I think is another element that has its advantages and as a package

he has a lot going for him.”

Vinery’s heavy-lifter for the past few seasons, All Too Hard (Casino

Prince), the sire of this season’s Surround Stakes- (Gr 1, 1400m) winning

filly Forbidden Love, Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Behemoth and

fellow Group 1-winning gelding Alligator Blood, has earned a fee increase

to $33,000, up from $27,500 in 2020.

“He’s had a terrific 2021, All Too Hard, and I think a lot of breeders

recognised what great value he was last season, hence the reason he

covered 180 mares, so we definitely felt he had a year where he warranted

going up a fraction,” White said.

“We didn’t want to bump him up too much and we still think he’s a

great value stallion for breeders out there who they can use with a bit of

confidence.

“Finding that proven horse, anywhere from $25,000 to $40,000 is not

easy, so we were quite keen to have him in that bracket and attract to him

another good book of mares.

“He’s always covered great books of mares and we wanted that support

to keep coming.”

Exceedance (Exceed And Excel), who

covered 142 mares in his first season at a fee of $38,500, has had his service

fee reduced to $33,000 this year as Vinery bids to attract a quality book of

mares in his second season.

“In that $25,000, and even up to the $50,000 bracket, is quite a

competitive market and there's a lot of young stallions in there who

have either retired the same year as Exceedance did or are having their

yearlings sold this year,” the respected Vinery bloodstock manager said.

“So, we just wanted to keep that book coming through for him for his

second season and follow it up again next season.”

Another son of Exceed And Excel (Danehill) on the Vinery Stud roster,

Headwater, whose eldest progeny are three-year-olds, gave a reminder of

his sire prowess last Saturday when his juvenile daughter Jamaea won the

$1 million Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick. His fee has been

increased slightly to $16,500, the same fee as barnmate Star Turn (Star

Witness) will remain at in 2021.

Star Turn is equal second by winners (seven) on the first season sire

table behind Capitalist (Written Tycoon), who has sired eight individual

two-year-old winners in Australia, while he is sixth by earnings.

Among his first crop performers is the stakes-placed winner Pegasi,

who finished third in the $2 million Inglis Millennium (RL, 1200m), and

the ATC Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) placegetter Astrologer.

“Star Turn’s got three very promising horses in fillies Startantes, Miss

Hipstar and Stellar Magic, who won on Saturday, all going to the Brisbane

carnival with great form and Astrologer is resuming (at Canterbury

today),” White said.

“So, Star Turn’s got a bit to come in the winter and he got a great book

last year, covering 170 mares, so we’ve decided to keep his fee at $16,500

and ensure that he gets another quality book for this season.”

On Headwater, White said: “He’s a horse that we took back a fraction

last season when fees were announced, mainly because we weren’t really

sure what effect Covid was going to have on the industry, but he was our

first horse booked out because

of the job he was doing and it

certainly hasn’t slowed down.

“We were quite keen to put

him back to his original fee …

and the filly Jamaea winning on

Saturday was terrific for him.

It elevates him to the top of the

second season sires title for

this current season, which is

fantastic, and we know there’s a

few more two-year-olds coming

through for him.”

“I think Press

Statement is a stallion who is still showing great

promise. He’s still churning out good winners,

he’s got a stakes winner in Equation and he’s got

Daily Bugle running in the Group 1 Champagne on

Saturday,” said White.

“I feel he’s possibly following in the footsteps

of a stallion like All Too Hard, really. It did take

All Too Hard time to gather momentum and Press

Statement is a horse, although he was a Group

1-winning two-year-old, whose progeny are

probably later two-year-olds.

“It wouldn’t surprise me in 12 months’ time if we

see him following in the All Too Hard category.

“He’s always had good numbers under his

belt, so I think this season he represents a terrific

opportunity for breeders if they can recognise that

and capitalise on a very competitive fee and reap

the rewards.”

Confirmation of Vinery Stud’s stallion roster

and service fees comes on the back of arguably

the farm’s best yearling sale at the Inglis Australian

Easter Yearling Sale.

Over the two-day sale, Vinery sold an Exceed And Excel (Danehill)

colt for $2.1 million - the highest-priced yearling ever sold by the farm -

while also selling three other lots for more than a million dollars and an I

Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) colt for $950,000.

“The Easter sale was a tremendous sale for us … and the farm’s got so

much momentum at the moment and, not only that, we’re still churning

out good quality winners, having bred and sold the winners of the Magic

Millions (2YO Classic) (Exhilarates), the Golden Slipper (Farnan) and a

Blue Diamond (Artorius) over the past three years,” White reflected.

“We’ve still got a relatively young stallion roster, but we have a good

established stallion in All Too Hard now and a few young horses like Star

Turn and Headwater coming through and now a new one in Ole Kirk, it’s

exciting times.

“The whole team’s been over the moon.”

Nature Strip to run in Waller’s Everest slotSix-time Group 1 winner Nature Strip (Nicconi)

will represent his trainer, Chris Waller Racing’s,

spot in the 2021 running of The Everest (1200m)

at Randwick in October. The star sprinter,

who finished seventh in the contest last year,

impressively landed the TJ Smith Stakes (Gr

1, 1200m) earlier this month. “Following his

scintillating victory in the TJ Smith I felt it was

an opportune time to be putting a deal forward

to secure him for 2021,” said Waller. “He has

shown me he has gone to another level this

autumn with a victory in the Lightning Stakes,

going down by a nostril in the Challenge in

track-record time and then blowing away his

rivals last start at Randwick in the TJ Smith.”

Rod Lyons, managing part-owner of Nature

Strip said: “We are ecstatic Chris’ slot has

selected Nature Strip. Nature Strip has again

shown us his capabilities as Australia’s best

sprinter this autumn and we eagerly await The

Everest in October.” Nature Strip is currently

being primed for the Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1,

1200m) on May 15.

Waller leaning towards Cox Plate with ElleegantMeanwhile, Chris Waller is veering towards

keeping multiple Group 1 winner Verry

Elleegant (Zed) in Australia this year and

contesting the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m). A

number of her ownership group are keen to

head to Europe to tackle the Prix de l'Arc de

Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m), but Waller believes

putting those plans on ice until next year may

be a better option. “I know there is still a strong

push from some of the owners at least to be able

to get her over there (Europe) but I think the

biggest challenge is what we have to sacrifice

if she goes,” Waller told Racing.com. “I would

love to see her race there but maybe this year

could be a bit quick with Covid restrictions

because it would be nice to be able to go and

see her and go and train her. Hopefully that

might make everybody’s decision a bit easier.

It’ll all be discussed shortly. I’d love to win a Cox

Plate with her, I think she’s close to Australia’s

best weight-for-age horse, if not the best. If the

trainer got his wish, maybe we can go to the Arc

next year.”

Queensland campaign for BlazejowskiA year on since Covid thwarted his plans of a

winter campaign in Queensland, Greg Eurell is

now eyeing off the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1,

1400m) with his talented galloper Blazejowski

(Dash For Cash). On Monday, in his first public

outing since finishing fifth in the Group 1 CF

Orr Stakes (1400m), the six-year-old gelding

won a jumpout impressively over 800 metres

at Cranbourne. Eurell said the dual stakes

winner would likely run first-up in Melbourne

before stepping to weight-for-age in the

Kingsford Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) at Eagle

Farm, two weeks before the Stradbroke. “He’s

going terrific at the moment, we’re very happy

with where he’s at,” said Eurell. “He had three

weeks off after his last run in the Orr and we’ve

prepared him to hopefully head towards the

Stradbroke. “Ideally, he’ll have one run down

here and then I’d like to give him one run up

there in the race over 1300 metres, two weeks

before the Stradbroke. “The 1400 metres is ideal

for him, the handicap conditions are attractive

and he’s very adaptable so it doesn’t matter if

it’s wet or dry.”

Allpress to reunite with Aimee’s Jewel in MelbourneFour-time New Zealand champion jockey

Lisa Allpress will reunite with Aimee's Jewel

(Proisir) in Melbourne on May 1. Allpress was

the four-year-old mare's regular rider in New

Zealand, guiding her to three wins from her

seven starts under the care of Stratford-based

trainer Trudy Keegan. The highlight was her

win in the Canterbury Breeders' Stakes (Gr 3,

1600m) at Riccarton last November. Now with

Kyneton-based trainer Charles Cassar, Aimee's

Jewel has won two jump outs in preparation

for her Australian debut over 1300 metres

at Sandown, her most recent at Kyneton on

Monday. "I'm really excited to go over and

ride her," said Allpress. "She's a mare that has

shown plenty of promise and she was able to

pick up that Group 3 race at Riccarton. It will

be great to carry on my association with her in

Australia and I'm looking forward to the change

in scenery."

Behemoth set for GoodwoodConnections are likely to bypass giving Group

1-winning sprinter Behemoth (All Too Hard)

a start before May's The Goodwood (Gr 1,

1200m) after the five-year-old worked nicely

between races at Strathalbyn on Sunday.

Grand Syndicates’ racing manager Sam Lyons

said they are keen to have him primed for a

first-up performance in The Goodwood, a

race in which he finished fourth in last year

and second the year prior. "Everything is

going super. We are really happy," said Lyons.

"It's looking very likely we go first-up into The

Goodwood. It's been the plan for some time. He

will likely have a trial or a jumpout again. He has

got a nice steady program that will keep tightening

him up.”

It’s Me recovering well from tendon injury

Talented mare It's Me (Shamus Award)

continues to recover well from a tendon

injury. The Kosciuszko (1200m) winner

hasn't been seen since her victory in the

valuable race for country-trained horses.

Since undergoing treatment for the injury

last year Grand Syndicates are pleased with

her progress. "She's super," said Sam Lyons.

"She is healing really, really well. We are at

the tail end of this rehab, and even though it

(the tendon) is really strong, it's continuing

to show good improvement with every scan.

So while it is showing improvement, which it

doesn't need to, we are going to keep pushing

on with her."

Tyche Goddess on path to Australasian OaksAuraria Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) winner Tyche

Goddess (Teofilo) will follow the traditional

path to the $500,000 Australasian Oaks (Gr

1, 2000m) at Morphettville on May 1 after her

winning performance on Saturday. The last

horse to complete the double was Sopressa

(So You Think) in 2018. “She got home last

night (Sunday), has eaten up well, so we

will just tick her over for the next week and

have another bit of fast work the following

week and she will be going into the Oaks in

good order hopefully,” said co-trainer Natalie

Busuttin. Passed in as a yearling for $100,000,

Tyche Goddess races in the familiar orange

and green diamonds of the Pope family. “It

was great for Des Pope and Dianna, those

colours have been around racing a long time

and it was really nice to get that stakes win

with that filly.”

Mahamedeis to return at Caulfield this SaturdayFlemington-based trainer Nick Ryan says

he’s likely to back-up his grand galloper

Mahamedeis (Magnus) this Saturday at

yesterday. Ryan said his original plan was to run

him in the Warrnambool Cup (Listed, 2350m)

early next month, but he was so taken with the

six-year-old's appearance and demeanor after

his gallop that he could switch to the 2000-metre

race at Caulfield on the weekend. "He pulled

up extremely well,” Ryan said. "He went down

the beach yesterday and I just watched him

then, going off the pony, and he was kicking

his heels up and he hasn't left a grain since so

there is some chance we may accept with him.

He's a bit of a marvel this horse. He comes back

every time and seems to get better and better.”

Mahamedeis’ career earnings are now at $1.1

million and he could add to that tally in the

coming months via races such as the $200,000

Premier's Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) at Eagle Farm on

May 29 before the $400,000 Brisbane Cup (Gr 2,

3200m) on June 12.

Deepstrike to take Derby step in Chairman’s StakesDeepstrike (Tavistock) is Adelaide bound

for the Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m)

at Morphettville as part of his build-up to

the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m).

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr-trained

galloper is unbeaten in two runs this

campaign and Kent Jr said the gelding had

finally learned what being a racehorse was

about. "He's got a turn of foot and he stays,"

Kent Jr told RSN. "He's got a real will to win

and when you ask him for an effort, he really

lowers his head and quickens up like a smart

horse. We've spaced his runs which really

suits him as he's not a big robust horse, a

typical Tavistock. He weighs around 450

kilograms and doesn't carry a lot of excess,

so we've spaced his runs. He's had four weeks

between his first and second run, three-and-

a-half weeks between his last start victory at

Sandown and the Chairman's and then he's

got two weeks into the Derby." Deepstrike

has been aimed at the Derby on May 8 since

closing out his initial campaign last year.

Prince Romany set to tackle VRC St LegerPrince Romany (Americain) will contest one

of Melbourne’s oldest races, the VRC St Leger

(Listed, 2800m) at Flemington this Sunday

after returning to form over 2200 metres at

Bendigo last week. "He goes into the St Leger

a little bit closer than I would have liked, but

he's fit and he's well and he's come though

his last run well," said Cumani. "We don't

have to do a lot with him now and I'd like

to think he'll get the distance no problem."

A first-up winner at Pakenham in February,

he said Prince Romany may have been out

of his depth when last behind Grandslam

(Myboycharlie) in the Alister Clark Stakes

(Gr 2, 2040m) at The Valley before finishing

tenth in the Bendigo St Leger Trial (2200m)

ahead of his recent victory. Disappointed

with The Valley performance, Cumani said

Prince Romany did not get the ride he hoped

for, while in the Bendigo St Leger Trial he got

stuck behind a wall of horses. “I'm frustrated

the St Leger Trial did not work out better

because I could have planned his route a little

differently. So, we needed to see him back on

track, and we saw that at Bendigo.”

Hollindale goal for BrandenburgThe John Sargent-trained Brandenburg

(Burgundy) will look to add to his tally of

wins in the Royal Randwick 100 Handicap

(1400m) on Saturday. Brandenburg was

also nominated for the All Aged Stakes (Gr

1, 1400m) this weekend, but Sargent is keen

on giving last year’s Hobartville Stakes (Gr

2, 1400m) winner an easy race ahead of the

Hollindale Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) at the Gold

Coast on May 8. "It's just going to be an easier

run because he's going to be peaking next start

after this at the Hollindale Stakes at the Gold

Coast," he said. "I'll claim with Louise Day,

so he'll go in there with 59.5 kilograms. He's

got a bit of class about him and if he gets a

draw he can position up and should run a big

race. It's a lot easier than the Group race and

I don't think I needed to go there yet because

we're aiming for two weeks' time and then the

Doomben Cup after that. I think he'll be really

hard to beat on Saturday all the same."

Final Chill bids for fourth consecutive winThe Kieran McDonagh-trained Final Chill

(Maschino) brought up a hat-trick of wins at

Ascot on Saturday and will chase another success

in the Jericho Cup Qualifier (3100m) at Albany

on Monday. The four-year-old gelding, who

has won four times from 22 starts, took a while

for McDonagh to suss out. "It's great to finally

figure him out, it only took me about 20 starts,"

McDonagh told The Races WA. "He's quite lazy

to be honest and that's the hard part. You could

never get a gauge on his work. I had two-year-olds

that were beating him in gallops, we didn't think

he was that much chop to be honest - I don't think

he has won a gallop in his life. I can't really process

what's happening because a couple of months

ago I didn't think he could win a midweek race,

let alone a Saturday, he has just come out of

nowhere. Maybe it's been a bit of maturity and

time. And the breed, I love Maschino's and

they get better with age." McDonagh expects

Final Chill to stay the 3100-metre trip, adding:

"3100 metres is no problem at all. If anything,

he will be better at that distance.”

First winner for BirnieJust 12 months after preparing her first runner,

Ballarat-based trainer Tammy Birnie celebrated

her first winner yesterday when four-year-old

gelding Sun Samurai (Fighting Sun) won his

1200-metre maiden at Geelong. "Thrilling, I'm

very excited," said Birnie. "I'm not very lucky, I'm

still pretty surprised. I've never been confident

(of winning)." Birnie suggested she would keep

Sun Samurai in work during the cooler months

due to his preference for soft ground. Birnie

only has four horses in work and Sun Samurai

was her first winner from her 29th starter.

Alexander breached cobalt rulesThe Victorian Racing Tribunal ruled yesterday

that Ballarat trainer Archie Alexander breached

rules concerning the administration of cobalt.

No penalty has yet been handed down. The case

concerns the administration of cobalt to Tom’s

Knight (Duporth) before a Kilmore Race in 2018

and the VRT ruled that Alexander contravened

rule AR245 (1). In a 14-page ruling, the VRT said:

“The Stewards accept that, about a year before the

race at Kilmore, Mr Alexander spoke to a Steward

concerning whether a particular feed used in his

stables might contain cobalt … he was assured

(by the manufacturer) that there was insufficient

cobalt in the feed to produce a positive return.

Tom’s Knight received some of it.” The ruling

went on to say: “Mr Alexander’s mistaken belief

that the amount of cobalt in the product which

he administered would not result in a reading at

a prohibited level is a matter which is relevant

only in relation to penalty.” It concluded: “On the

basis of the agreed facts for the purposes of this

Ruling, Mr Alexander has breached AR245 (1).”

Haggas to be back with or without AddeybbWilliam Haggas will likely be back in Australia

next year, but the Newmarket trainer will not

commit to returning seven-year-old Addeybb

for a shot at becoming a three-time Queen

Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) champion.

“He’s going to be eight-years-old, so whether he

comes back or we come back I don’t know yet,’’

Haggas told TABradio. “I have a strong stable

of horses up here in Newmarket and there

must be something there that would suit Down

Under. You haven’t heard the last of us anyway.”

Vale Neville LaytNeville Layt, the trainer of Magic Millions 2YO

Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Karuta Queen

(Not A Single Doubt), died yesterday afternoon

at Canberra Hospital. Layt, a former jockey,

trained 256 winners during his career. Propose

A Toast (Excelebration) was Layt’s last winner

after saluting at Canberra in January. Layt’s

wife Barbie announced the news on Twitter

last night. “Just to let you all know that my

husband Neville Layt, racehorse trainer from

Queanbeyan, passed away quietly late this

afternoon at Canberra Hospital,” she said. Layt’s

son Adrian, a Sydney-based jockey who won 82

times for his father, said: “My Dad lost his battle

today. [Neville] you will be sadly missed.”

Pike to ride at Morphettville next weekendLeading Western Australia rider Willie Pike is

planning another interstate raid next weekend

as he partners Godolphin filly Flexible

(Hallowed Crown) in the Australasian Oaks (Gr

1, 2000m) and continues his association with

the Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Sisstar

(Zoustar) in the Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1,

1200m) at Morphettville. The sister to Sunlight

won the Bel Esprit Stakes (Listed, 1100m) under

Pike at Caulfield on Saturday.

Brett Scott delighted to be homeBrett Scott is happy to be back home after more

than a month in hospital following being kicked

in the head by a horse last month. “I am just

trying to get back in the swing of things and

get my head working right again. I have been

home five days, so I am definitely improving,”

the Mornington trainer told SENTrack. Scott

said he suffered a brain bleed as a result of

the incident, which affected his speech and

memory. “A horse kicked me in the left side of

my head and basically knocked me out stone

cold,” he said. “I ended up with a few brain

issues with a bit of bleeding in the lower part of

my brain and that caused a lot of problems. The

left side affected my speech and the right side

affected my memory. It has just been something

I have been trying to get back and those first few

weeks I was in another place and had no idea

what they (doctors) were asking me. Thankfully

I am improving, and that is all I can hope for.”

Tye Angland Medal up for grabs at WaggaJockeys will be bidding to win the Tye Angland

Medal over the two days of this year’s Wagga

Gold Cup Carnival taking place on May 6 and 7.

The medal, which will be counted the same way

as the jockey challenge with both days added

together to reveal the winner, will be presented

on course by Angland and the winning jockey

will also receive prize-money due to sponsorship

from David Barnhill and William Farrer Hotel.

Murrumbidgee Turf Club’s CEO Steven Keene

told Racing NSW: “Blaike McDougall has had

a mortgage on the last two William Farrer Tye

Angland Medals and looks to be the one to catch

again in 2021," Mr Keene said. “Some of the senior

jockeys from Sydney have confirmed that they

are riding over the two days including Tommy

Berry and Nash Rawiller. Murrumbidgee Turf

Club is confident of locking in a couple more

riders ahead of the carnival.”

Rider Horse dispersal on gavelhouseA dispersal of 135 lots for the Inner Mongolia

Rider Horse Industry Ltd group is live online

on gavelhouse.com. The listings include

mares and foals, weanlings, yearlings, two-

year-olds and unraced stock. There are 45

in-foal mares set for auction, while a number

of mares are being sold with foals at foot. The

Rider Horse stock is based at two properties,

Highview Stud in Ngahinapouri and Willow

Glen Stud in Waimate. All bar two of the lots

are being sold unreserved. “This is a complete

dispersal as a result of Inner Mongolia Rider

Horse Industry not being able to export

horses to China since Covid-19 hit, which is

a significant part of their business,” Highview

Stud’s Brent Gillovic said. “Given there is no

likelihood of horse flights resuming between

New Zealand and China in the near future,

the decision has been made to disperse

the horses, with several quality offerings

amongst them. With the large number of

horses on offer, I expect to see some bargain

basement prices and plenty of opportunities

for pin-hookers and young trainers to get their

hands on quality young stock.” The sale will

conclude on Sunday, April 25, with the first

lot scheduled for the earlier than usual time of

5pm (NZT) given the larger volume of horses to

be auctioned.

Levante set for spring targetsWestbury Classic (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Levante

(Proisir) has been spelled and will be targeted

at spring races later this year. The four-year-

old mare, who placed in the Railway Stakes

(Gr 1, 1200m) on New Year’s Day, finished her

season with a fourth-placed effort in the New

Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1,

1600m) at Te Rapa on Saturday. Ken Kelso, who

trains Levante at Matamata with his wife Bev,

said no plans had been made about what her

potential targets would be next season. “She’s

spelling now,” he said. “We haven’t at this stage

decided what will happen with her next year. We

will have a talk about it with her owners and make

decisions a little bit later.”

HK: Sugiyama confident Daring Tact can rebound in QEIIHaruki Sugiyama is adamant Japanese

Fillies’ Triple Crown winner Daring Tact

(Epiphaneia) can recapture winning form

in the QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Sha Tin

on Sunday. Defeated by Almond Eye (Lord

Kanaloa) and Contrail (Deep Impact) in the

Japan Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) on November 29,

Daring Tact resumed with a fast-finishing

second behind Gibeon (Deep Impact) in

the Kinko Sho (Gr 2, 2000m) on March 14.

“Comparing between the Kinko Sho and the

Japan Cup, she was much more settled and

relaxed at the parade ring and the starting

gate, so I saw some sort of improvement with

her temperament, which I am happy with,”

Sugiyama said. “The most important thing is

how she performs – if she shows the top of her

ability this weekend, I am, as well as my team,

confident that she is the best horse in the field.

But I know all the other runners in this kind

of race are tough to beat so I am just trying to

concentrate on how we can improve her before

this weekend.”

HK: Teetan goes for Glory in QEII Karis Teetan believes he is ready to reap the

rewards from a pair of off-season stints in Japan

when he partners Glory Vase (Deep Impact) in

the QEII Cup. “Since I’ve been in Hong Kong,

I’ve had a few stints in Japan throughout the off-

seasons and it’s nice because now it’s paying

off having made those connections with an

opportunity like this,” Teetan said. Glory Vase,

winner of the Kyoto Daishoten (Gr 2, 2400m)

three starts ago, returns for his second foray in

Hong Kong after landing the 2019 Hong Kong

Vase (Gr 1, 2400m). “His win here in Hong

Kong was very impressive, the manner in which

he quickened up was impressive and I expect

he’ll be one of the favourites but he deserves

it because he’s got the quality,” Teetan said.

“Daring Tact looks very strong, but this horse

has done it here, he knows the track and he

knows how things work here, so I hope I can do

good aboard him.”

HK: Southern Legend can bounce backTeetan also pairs with veteran galloper

Southern Legend (Not A Single Doubt) on

Sunday, who is looking for back-to-back wins

in the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m). Southern

Legend is winless since last year’s success but

has run second on his last four runs, including

in the Chairman’s Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) earlier

this month. “He’s such an amazing horse, it’s

amazing how hard he tries all the time, he just

never gives up - last start things didn’t quite go

his way because I thought the leader had it his

own way out in front,” said Teetan. “I thought

things could be different for him but in a small

field, tactics can change the complexion of

the race and trouble can occur, so I am going

to have this at the back of my mind when I sit

down with Caspar (Fownes) to discuss the

plan.”

SGP: Zac attacks Lion City Cup with visors and renewed hopesKiwi trainer Mark Walker is hoping Zac Kasa

(Reset) can end his winless run in Sunday’s

Lion City Cup (Listed, 1200m), a local Group 1,

having not won since February 2019. Zac Rasa

landed a hit-out yesterday morning with some

new headgear, as Waller attempts to spark up

the son of Reset (Zabeel). “A trial is a trial. He ran

okay, but this horse hasn’t won for a long time,”

said Walker. “We tried him with visor blinkers

just to try something different. As horses get

a little older, we have to try something new

to change up their routine. He went well with

them this morning, and hopefully they spark

him up on Sunday.” Zac Rasa will be making his

third start on Sunday after joining his yard from

Cliff Brown. “He’s had two runs for me and

both times, he was ridden forward, but there

will be plenty of speed this time. We may have

to sit back,” said Walker.

“Hopefully the race

will be run to suit.

On his day, he’s

very capable, but

whether he puts

in 100 per cent on

the day, we’ll wait

and see.”

JPN: Soul Stirring gives birth to Bricks And Mortar fillyChampion Japanese filly Soul Stirring (Frankel)

delivered her first foal, a filly by Breeders' Cup

Turf (Gr 1, 12f) hero Bricks And Mortar (Giant’s

Causeway), on Friday. Soul Stirring is the second

foal out of the brilliant multiple Group 1 winner

Stacelita (Monsun). Stacelita won four Group 1s

in France in addition to two top-level contests

in the United States. Trained by Kazuo Fujisawa,

Soul Stirring became the first Group or Grade 1

winner for Frankel (Galileo) when winning the

Hanshin Juvenile Fillies (Gr 1, 1600m) in December

2016. She subsequently won the Japanese Oaks (Gr

1, 2400m) the following May. Soul Stirring retired to

join the Shadai broodmare band in 2020 and visited

Bricks And Mortar, a multiple Grade 1 winner and

the 2019 American Horse of the Year. Stacelita has a

two-year-old sister to Soul Stirring named Stunning

Star. She produced a colt by Frankel this year.

33 for KingmanGodolphin’s Wirko (3 c ex Weltmacht by Mount

Nelson) landed the Blue Riband Trial (Listed,

1m 2f) at Epsom yesterday to earn Kingman

(Invincible Spirit) his 33rd individual stakes

winner. The Charlie Appleby-trained colt stormed

home late under William Buick to run down

Epsom Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) entry Technique

(Mastercraftsman) by a head, with the John and

Thady Gosden-trained favourite Uncle Bryn

(Sea The Stars) two lengths behind the winner

in third. Kingman, a four-time Group 1 winner

and subsequent sire of three elite-level winners,

Palace Pier, Domestic Spending and Persian King,

stands at Juddmonte’s Banstead Manor Stud for

£150,000 (approx. AU$269,080).

Two for CaravaggioFormer Coolmore Australia shuttler Caravaggio

(Scat Daddy) recorded his second winner

yesterday as the Donnacha O’Brien-trained

Elliptic (2 f ex Aqua De Vida by Fastnet Rock)

won on debut as the 3-1 favourite in the five furlong

Irish EBF Fillies Maiden at Tipperary. The win for

Elliptic follows victory for the Aidan O’Brien-trained

Tenebrism for the dual Group 1-winning stallion,

who has leapt straight to the top of the first-season

sire table in Ireland. Elliptic defeated Quick Suzy

(Profitable) by a length and a half. She is the third

foal out of the unraced Fastnet Rock (Danehill)

mare Aqua De Vida, herself a half-sister to Group

3 winner Hebridean (Bach). Caravaggio resides at

Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky for a fee of

US$25,000 (Approx. AU$32,000).

UK: Star apprentice Benoit de la Sayette tests positive for cocaineBenoit de la Sayette, the apprentice sensation

who stormed to Lincoln (1m) success in his first

professional ride on turf at Doncaster last month,

has received notification of a positive drugs test

for cocaine. The British Horseracing Authority

(BHA) has suspended the 18-year-old, pending

a disciplinary hearing, after tests of a hair sample

returned traces of metabolites of cocaine. The BHA

commissioned the test following the circulation

of a social media clip purporting to show him at

a party where the drug was in circulation. And

in a statement released through the Professional

Jockeys Association, De la Sayette admits to having

used cocaine in the past. The statement said: "Last

month a film circulated claiming to show Benoit

de la Sayette at a party in the presence of cocaine

following victory aboard Haqeeqy in the Unibet

Lincoln at Doncaster on Saturday, March 27. The

PJA issued a statement on Benoit's behalf denying

the allegation and confirming that he "did not and

does not take cocaine". Subsequently, the BHA

arranged to take urine and hair samples from

Benoit on Wednesday, March 31. The urine sample

returned negative on the same day the test was

administered but on Friday evening Benoit was

informed by the BHA that the hair sample had

returned positive for metabolites of cocaine.

Benoit has now admitted that he has previously

taken cocaine and that he had initially not been

as forthcoming as he ought to have been to those

close to him and advising him.”

Suesa remains unbeatenThe Francois Rohaut-trained Suesa (3 f Night Of

Thunder - Sally Is The Boss by Orpen) cruised to

victory in the Prix Sigy (Gr 3, 1100m) at Chantilly

yesterday, notching her third win from as many

starts. Ridden patiently by Olivier Peslier, Suesa

swept past long-time leader Isle Of May (Kodiac)

in the closing stages to score by three and a half

lengths. Ideal Beauty (Invincible Spirit) was

another length and a quarter back in third. Suesa,

winner of the Prix Yacowlef (Listed, 1100m)

on her previous start in November, is one of 19

stakes winners by Night Of Thunder (Dubawi),

who shuttled to Australia for one season in 2016.

Cherry Tortoni, winner of the Moonee Valley Vase

(Gr 2, 2040m) and runner-up in the Australian

Promising two-year-old Arnaqueur

(Astern) is no guarantee to back

up in Saturday’s ATC Champagne

Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick as

trainer Jean Dubois ponders the ramifications

of raising the bar with the well-bred colt in his

first racing campaign.

Bred and owned by the David Chaikin-

owned Woodpark Stud, a Southern Highland

property managed by Dubois, Arnaqueur won

his first start at Kembla Grange on April 3 and

was immediately tested at stakes level in last

Saturday’s Fernhill Handicap (Listed, 1600m)

at Randwick.

The half-brother to Dubois’ Todman Stakes

(Gr 2, 1200m) winner Aylmerton (Siyouni) ran

on from last to finish fourth, two lengths behind

Converge (Frankel), prompting the Southern

Highlands-based trainer to enter the colt for the

Group 1 1600-metre juvenile race seven days later.

“He pulled up well, he looks in good

shape, but it’s a tough ask with just seven days

in between runs. I don’t know if it’s too much

to ask of him,” Frenchman Dubois told ANZ

Bloodstock News yesterday.

“He did very well last Saturday. He was

a bit unlucky at the top of the straight, he was

bumped by another horse. He was a little bit

unbalanced for a while and then he ran on well.

The third horse came underneath him, so all in

all, it was a good run but is it good enough for a

Group 1? I doubt it.”

The third foal out of Aloona (Smart Strike), a

US-bred, European-winning mare, Arnaqueur

was withdrawn from last year’s Easter sale and

retained to race.

“On the advice of Royston (Murphy) from

Sledmere, he said to me it was better to keep

him because the Asterns were a bit cold and

we couldn’t expect more than $100,000 and we

weren’t prepared to let him go for that kind of

money, so that’s why we retained him,” Dubois

explained.

“He’s very much in the mould (of his

grandsire) Medaglia D’Oro, leggy and

long, quite narrow and Medaglia was not a

precocious horse either.

“He was a champion at four, so time will be

good for him, too, hopefully.”

Aloona is the gift which keeps on giving,

with Dubois selling a Not A Single Doubt

(Redoute’s Choice) colt out of her at the

recent Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale

to Coolmore’s Tom Magnier for $1 million

through the Lime Country Thoroughbreds

draft.

“That was emotional (to get that sort of

money at auction), but he was a really good

type,” he said.

“He was more of an Australian type, a bit

stockier, sharper and he was a bit bigger than

Aylmerton as Aylmerton was a first foal, and a

small foal.

“(The Not A Single Doubt colt) was a good

type, a good walker with a good temperament

and he will be trained by a great trainer (Chris

Waller) and he will get every chance.”

Aloona has a weanling filly by Snitzel

(Redoute’s Choice) but she did not get in foal

last year.

While the Snitzel filly will have immense

commercial sale appeal, Dubois hopes to retain

her to race as well, having parted with Aloona’s

second foal, a Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock) filly

for $360,000.

She was bought by Anthony Cummings

and agent Duncan Ramage at the 2019 Magic

Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and races

for a partnership which includes Kia Ora. The

three-year-old ran third at Scone yesterday.

“If I can help it, I don’t think she (Snitzel

filly) will go to the sales because I have already

sold the first filly out of her, so I would like to

keep a filly,” he said.

“It’s better to be safe than sorry because you

never know what can happen. If I can keep her, I will.”

As for Arnaqueur, one of four winners from

17 runners for his Darley first season sire Astern,

he is expected to be spelled either immediately or

after the Champagne Stakes depending on how

Dubois assesses his trackwork this morning.

Golden Sixty (Medaglia D’Oro)

should shrug aside all-

too-familiar rivals in the

Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m)

at Sha Tin on Sunday, when a handful of

raiders from Japan are expected to be too

strong for the home defences in the other

two Champions Day features: Daring Tact

(Epiphaneia), Loves Only You (Deep Impact),

Kiseki (Rulership) and Glory Vase (Deep

Impact) make up half the field in the QEII

Cup (Gr 1, 2000m), while Danon Smash (Lord

Kanaloa) is a standout in the Chairman’s

Sprint Prize (Gr 1, 1200m).

Some encouragement for the home

runners, besides Golden Sixty, however, lies

in the refreshing, eternal truth that sport has

a tendency to scuttle the seemingly obvious,

and, beyond that, there is always the hope

of what the next cycle of young stock might

bring.

Danon Smash exposed the current

weakness in the Hong Kong sprinting ranks

with an upset win in the Hong Kong Sprint

(Gr 1, 1200m) at Sha Tin in December. He

followed with success in the Takamatsunomiya

Kinen (Gr 1, 1200m) at Chukyo in March and

heads into the weekend rated 116, four points

superior to his closest rivals.

The 12 opposing him are a mix of

the admirable yet exposed, the slightly

disappointing and the as-yet-unfulfilled.

Among those is a quartet of four-year-olds,

Wellington (All Too Hard), Beauty Applause

(Stratum), Stronger (Not A Single Doubt) and

Sky Field (Deep Field), who all came up short

behind Amazing Star (Darci Brahma) last time

in the Sprint Cup (Gr 2, 1200m) but could have

the innate talent to rise higher.

Sky Field was ninth in that race and is

the lowest rated in the field off a mark of

103. But the fact that he is taking his place,

with a career record of four wins and three

placings from 11 starts, is itself a nod to the

eye-catching start his young sire Deep Field

(Northern Meteor) has made with his Hong

Kong-raced progeny.

The Newgate Farm stallion has enjoyed a

fine beginning to his stud career more broadly:

among his best offspring, Portland Sky was a

dead-heat winner of the Oakleigh Plate (Gr

1, 1100m), while Aysar placed second in the

Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

“Deep Field has clearly been a revelation

and as an Australian stallion operation, seeing

our stallions succeeding in Hong Kong is

key because Hong Kong is an extension of

the Australian racing industry, in my mind,”

Newgate Farm boss Henry Field said.

Deep Field’s career was shaped by an

injury. A couple of surgeries were required

after another horse landed a kick at trackwork

and that prevented him from racing until the

back-end of his three-year-old season. The late

start to his racing career is a positive, though,

in terms of his profile as a producer for Hong

Kong, where sprinters mature through the

grades to peak at age five.

The speedy bay proceeded to rattle off five

wins, culminating with the Linlithgow Stakes

(Gr 2, 1200m) in the late spring of his four-

year-old campaign, before he placed third, as

favourite, in the Lightning (Gr 1, 1000m). With

his mind already on the breeding shed in two

subsequent starts, he was retired to stand the

2015 covering season at Newgate for AU$20,000

(exc GST), rising to AU$50,000 by 2020.

The stallion’s first Hong Kong success was

achieved in January 2020, a bustling night in

the outer environs of Wanchai District, when

Californiadeepshot (Deep Field), blazed from

the gate and ran his rivals ragged first-up. The

race was a Class 3 handicap over 1200 metres,

and the gelding has proven no better than a

stock sprinter in the grade, yet the win was eye-

catching in its make-all execution.

Californiadeepshot is a product of Deep

Field’s initial crop, and that bunch of four-

year-olds has taken to Hong Kong, a tough

environment for any horse both physically and

mentally, and one which can appear fickle, too,

as owners latch onto trends – be that stallions,

trainers or jockeys – only to abandon with

brutal pragmatism if the chosen one falls short

or a better option arises.

Champions Day runners enhances Deep Field’s growing reputation

So far, Deep Field is keeping the owners

and trainers happy. His 24 progenies in Hong

Kong have raced 159 times and nine have won

22 races between them. The list includes not

only Sky Field but also Winning Dreamer who

won his first six races, rising from a rating of 52

to 102; Winner Method is unbeaten in three and

Master Fay, trained, like Sky Field, by Caspar

Fownes, has won his only outing to date.

“There is no doubt Deep Field is going to

be one of the best stallions going in the next

few years. He’s got them coming left, right and

centre. He’s a potential star stallion and he’s

already proving that,” Fownes said.

Deep Field has already been tagged ‘a

Hong Kong stallion’. That colloquial label

has been applied to a select and sometimes

obscure group of sires down the years. Forget

superstar Galileo (Sadler’s Wells), whose three

limited-ability imports quite naturally failed

in the sprinter-miler dominated circuit; to

gauge real stallion success in Hong Kong, look

to his less-lauded Coolmore companion, Holy

Roman Emperor (Danehill), and the likes of

O’Reilly (Last Tycoon), Pins (Snippets), El

Moxie (Conquistador Cielo), Darci Brahma

(Danehill), and Hong Kong’s current leading

sire by winners Per Incanto (Street Cry), as well

as the globally-renowned Encosta De Lago

(Fairy King), Exceed And Excel (Danehill) and

Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway).

“There are Hong Kong stallions, to some

degree, but I actually think it’s more that some

stallions do not get Hong Kong horses,” said Sha

Tin-based trainer Paul O’Sullivan.

Hong Kong relies entirely on imported

stock, there is no breeding industry, so there

is not the same need to promote stallions. It’s

a simple relationship: if their stock delivers,

the sire finds favour, whatever his name or

reputation elsewhere.

Holy Roman Emperor was never the height

of fashion after coming off the subs bench

for George Washington (Danehill), despite

siring a European Classic winner early on, but

76 of his offspring have raced in Hong Kong

and 42 of those have garnered 126 wins. Most

importantly, his global profile was raised with

his Hong Kong-based Group 1 winners Designs

On Rome, Beauty Only and Rich Tapestry.

Meanwhile, Pins sired two champions in Hong

Kong, Ambitious Dragon and Aerovelocity,

with his 68 runners in the city yielding 136 wins

from 42 individual winners.

O’Sullivan trained Aerovelocity to win

Group 1 races in Hong Kong, Singapore and

Japan, and he has had success with less-

vaunted stallions, too, whose stock had the

requisite attributes to make it in Hong Kong.

“O’Reilly had winners all over but they

achieved more in Hong Kong considering the

numbers; he was more fashionable in Hong

Kong. To a lesser degree you have a horse like

Castledale, he had winners here in Hong Kong

and he was serving 15 mares a year in New

Zealand,” said the handler.

Castledale (Peintre Celebre) had only ten

individual runners in Hong Kong but eight of

those won 27 races from 226 starts between

them. As O’Sullivan put it, “They handled the

firm tracks and had good brains” and those

traits are essential for Hong Kong success.

“Deep Field gets very sound horses,”

noted Field. “Very fast horses, and he’s a very

consistent stallion on every metric. But it

doesn’t surprise me that he’s a freak in Hong

Kong because they’re horses that have such

great temperaments and they’re hard, tough,

sound horses that can handle that harsh

environment.

“The yearlings at sales by Deep Field, they

eat, they sleep, they’re push-button and they’re

the types of horses that go to Hong Kong and

succeed.”

Hong Kong’s champion trainer Ricky Yiu

enjoyed his biggest wins with the exceptional

champion sprinter Sacred Kingdom, sired by

Deep Field’s grandfather Encosta De Lago.

“I’ve been noticing the Deep Feld progeny

from day one, we had a big rap for them,” Yiu

said. “I think the majority of his progeny is in

good shape, good conformation, and they look

like they’re runners. I liked Northern Meteor,

his father, but he passed away.”

A stallion has really made his name in

Hong Kong when the ever-cautious Hong Kong

Jockey Club starts purchasing their progeny

for its private sale; that happened at this year’s

Premier Yearling Sale in February. Yiu, though,

knows too well that it is already getting harder

to buy Deep Field’s stock.

“I could have bought two from the Premier,”

he said. “I bought Lot 109 and I was underbidder

for Lot 525, the Deep Field the Club bought

for AU$550,000, the most expensive one they

bought. I went up to AU$525,000.

“A couple of years ago they averaged just

under $300,000 for a good one but now you

want to have a decent one you need to pay a lot

more: you need to nearly double it.”

Fownes’ Sky Field was a NZ$175,000

purchase when he was bought as a yearling

three years ago. The gelding has already more

than repaid his purchase fee and, if he can

make his presence felt against Danon Smash

on Sunday, it will only enhance his sire’s

burgeoning reputation.

VERDICT Fire Ball has the potential to build upon last month’s C&D winand, with Joao Moreira booked again, he needs to be taken very

seriously. However, unexposed 3yo FLAMING PASSION was a close fourth from awide stall over 5f here last month and looks ready for today’s step up in trip. He’sfavourably drawn today and gets the vote. Monster Kaka should also feature.

VERDICT There could easily be a lot more to come from SPICY SOGOOD, who left his disappointing debut behind when going

close over C&D last month and has a much better draw from which to attack from thefront today. My My My was a shade disappointing on his latest outing but therewere some excuses, and he also remains unexposed. Harmony Fire can probablywin again soon but his wide draw dents his appeal today.

VERDICT H Z Tourbillon created a good impression when gaining anemphatic C&D win on just his second career start and it will be

very interesting to see how well he copes with today’s rise in grade but anotherchance is given to likely front-runner CAPITAL STAR, who let odds-on backersdown last month but is well drawn today and remains unexposed in Hong Kong.Noble Steed is next on the list.

VERDICT It’s not easy for Zac Purton to get down to 8st 8lb but, even so, itstill looks significant that he has deserted hat-trick-seeker Ever
