decision had been taken to target the Spring Carnival this year before Marmelo is too high in the weights.

“He has established himself as a contender and has been performing well all year,” Berkshire-based Morrison told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“He is not a slow two-miler and ran a good time at Chantilly earlier in the year, and a good time at Deauville last time.

“He is a progressive horse who has gone up in the weights, and if we don’t go now we will be far too high in the weights.”

The four-year-old son of Duke Of Marmalade (Danehill) has mainly been campaigned in France this year, but he was also a close fifth in the Yorkshire Cup (Gr 2, 1m6f) behind The Queen’s Dartmouth (Dubawi) in May.

“In the Yorkshire Cup earlier this season, he came there absolutely swinging, but I think he just got a bit lost on the soft ground, I won’t be the first or the last person to say it but it is a funny surface at York,” Morrison said.

“He goes to France because, as much as anything, he gets the French breeders' premium and he has earned a lot of money because of it.”

The trainer enjoyed victory at the highest level with July Cup (Gr 1, 6f) winners Sakhee’s Secret (Sakhee) and Pastoral Pursuits (Bahamian Bounty) and said that an approach from an outside party had sparked the owners’ decision to bypass the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) on 1 October.

“The owners are very sporting and they had been dreaming of an Arc, but I think

they were approached by somebody and that lit the fuse,” Morrison said. “You dream of winning Derbies, Arcs and Melbourne Cups, so if

you’ve got half a chance, it’s great to have a go.” Morrison added that travel plans for Marmelo had yet to be finalised,

but that his instinct told him it would be beneficial to enter quarantine as early as possible, to allow the horse time to adjust to his new surroundings.

“It is very much in the air. My gut feel says the earlier you go the better, while the temperature change (from the UK to Australia) is less significant,” he said.

“Horses start to grow their coat in September, and if you can hold that off by going in September rather than October it might give him a better chance of bedding in.

“I’ve never had any runners there, and I’ve never even been to Australia which is rather embarrassing!”

Marmelo was one of 24 European horses nominated for the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, with Godolphin trainers Charlie Appleby and Saeed Bin Suroor likely to be represented in the $6,000,000 feature, alongside champion Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien.

Scotland could also have its first ever runner in the 3200 metre showpiece, with Dumfries and Galloway-based Iain Jardine handing an entry to last weekend’s Ebor Handicap (1m6f) winner Nakeeta (Sixties Icon).

12 For Memsie Stakes A total of 12 runners have accepted for Saturday’s Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield, with the field headed by last year’s winner Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars), who race from barrier five for jockey Brad Rawiller. The Darren Weir-trained gelding will line up alongside stablemates Tosen Stardom (Deep Impact) and Humidor (Teofilo), who will race from barriers four and 11 respectively. Meanwhile the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained Jon Snow (Iffraaj), who will be having his first start since winning the ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) in April, has drawn barrier ten for jockey Stephen Baster.

Rawiller Backs Bart To Bounce BackBrad Rawiller is confident that Black Heart Bart can return to winning form when he lines up in the Memsie Stakes on Saturday. The seven-year-old was last successful in the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in February and was third first up in the P B Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). "His work on Monday (at Ballarat) was terrific. He worked with Tosen Stardom and it was quite strong work with both horses,” Rawiller told Racing.com. “Obviously, he's going to be better than what he was first-up. We said that all along that he would be improved with that run under the belt and I think a lot of the work has already been done with barrier five."

Morning Brief

Le Romain Ready For Caulfield TestTrainer Kris Lees is happy with the condition of multiple Group One winner Le Romain (Hard Spun) ahead of his run in the Memsie Stakes on Saturday and hopes the gelding can gain a spot in The Everest (1200m). The five-year-old will be having his second start this preparation having run second to Invincible Gem (I Am Invincible) first up and Lees said he hopes to find out soon whether Le Romain has a slot in the $10,000,000 race. "There's a few sniffs around for an Everest slot but I also thought the Makybe Diva in a fortnight suits him as well," Lees said. "I can understand everyone keeping their powder dry and waiting. But if he was to gain a slot in the next week or so I'd probably take him home."

Merchant Navy Draws Four In McNeilThe Ciaron Maher-trained Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock) will be looking to preserve his unbeaten record when he lines up alongside ten rivals in the H D F McNeil Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday. The three-year-old colt won each of his three starts as a juvenile, including the ANZAC Day Stakes (Listed, 1400m) in April, and he will race from barrier four on Saturday with Mark Zahra booked to take the ride. Among the colt’s other rivals is the Godolphin-raced Trekking (Street Cry) and Leon And Troy Corstens-trained stakes winner Kobayashi (I Am Invincible).

12 Declared For The HeathA total of 12 runners have accepted for the The Heath 1100 Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday, with Group One winner Sheidel (Holy Roman Emperor) in line to make her reappearance from barrier three. A winner of the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) in the February, Sheidel has not been seen since running 11th in the UBET Classic (registered as Robert Sangster Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville in May. Among her opposition is Group Three winner Voodoo Lad (I Am Invincible) and Group Two winner Legless Veuve (Pins), who have drawn barriers seven and four respectively.

Moroney Unsure Of Saracino FormTrainer Mike Moroney says he is unsure what to expect when Saracino (Per Incanto) makes his Australian debut in The Heath 1100 Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday. The multiple Group Two winner remained in Australia after finishing sixth in the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) when trained by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman and he won a jump out at Flemington earlier this month but did not perform to expectations in a second last Friday. “His first jump out was good but then his

second one was pretty ordinary," Moroney said. "So we're going into it without really knowing what he's going to do. He has worked well but that second jump out was just a bit below par."

13 Accept For Cockram StakesThe Lindsay Park-trained mare Fuhryk (Star Witness), who won the Proud Miss Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) on her final start last preparation, has drawn barrier three and is likely to face 12 rivals in the W W Cockram Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday. The four-year-old will line up alongside Group Two winner Savanna Amour (Love Conquers All) from the John Meagher stable, who has drawn barrier five for jockey Ben Melham. The Darren Weir-trained Group One winner Miss Cover Girl (Monashee Mountain) will race from barrier 13 with Luke Nolen booked to take the ride.

Dulverton Chasing First Stakes WinThe Robert Smerdon-trained Dulverton (Commands) will aim secure her first stakes success from barrier four in the Heatherlie Stakes (Listed, 1700m) at Caulfield on Saturday before she heads to the breeding barn. The filly will face 14 rivals in the $120,000 race, including the Group One winner Montoya’s Secret (High Chaparral) and Group Three Assign (Montjeu), who will race from barriers five and 13 respectively. "Dulverton is racing the best she has ever raced," Smerdon said. "She's won four city races but she's got no black-type. If she could manage to fill a place she will have improved her CV. But she's off to stud anyway." Click here to view the Caulfield acceptances.

Winx Faces 11 RivalsChampion mare Winx (Street Cry) will face 11 rivals in Saturday’s Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Randwick as she looks to win her 19th successive start. Premier Sydney trainer

Chris Waller is responsible for half of the field of 12, with Group One-placed Antonio Giuseppe (barrier ten) (Shocking), Who Shot Thebarman (one) (Yamanin Vital), Libran (eight) (Lawman), Life Less Ordinary (11) (Thewayyouare) and Sarrasin (four) (Monsun) also set to take their chance. Group One winners Lasqueti Spirit (Beneteau) and Sense Of Occasion (Street Sense) will race from barriers seven and two.

Chocante Makes Sydney DebutBrisbane Cup (Gr 2, 2200m) winner Chocante (Shocking) will also line up alongside Winx in the Chelmsford Stakes. The Stephen Marsh-trained five-year-old will resume having not been seen since winning the Group Two in June and will use Saturday’s race as a lead up for a run in The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick on 30 September. "I think the trip's made him. He's more mature mentally. Physically he looks better. He's turned from a boy to a man I guess," Marsh said. "He was a bit of a sook. He was always needing company, now he's a bit of a stand-alone. It's a big step up. We can't hide the fact it wasn't the strongest of Brisbane Cup fields.”

Ten Entered For TramwayThe Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained multiple stakes winner Ecuador (High Chaparral) has been installed as the CrownBet’s $3.80 favourite for Saturday’s Tramway Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick, where he will race from barrier seven with Adam Hyeronimus booked to take the ride. Among the gelding’s competition is the Kris Lees-trained Group Two winner Invincible Gem (I Am Invincible), who is on the second line of betting at $3.90 and will be ridden by Corey Brown from barrier five. Meanwhile, Chris Waller has accepted with dual Group Three winner McCreery (Big Bad Bob) and Mackintosh (Pins), who have drawn barriers three and ten respectively.

Barrier Six For FormalityThe Lindsay Park-trained Formality (Fastnet Rock) was among the seven acceptors for the Furious Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick on Saturday and she will be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy from barrier six. The three-year-old resumed by winning the Silver Shadow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and will clash again with the Godolphin-raced Alizee (one) (Sepoy) and the Bjorn Baker-trained Champagne Cuddles (Not A Single Doubt) (eight), who chased her home in the Silver Shadow Stakes. Stakes winner and Group One-placed filly Whispered Secret (High Chaparral) has drawn barrier two for Glyn Schofield.

Cummings Bullish About AlizeeTrainer James Cummings is confident Alizee can reverse the form with Formality when the pair face off again in the Furious Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. Alizee finished a head adrift of Formality in the Silver Shadow Stakes and Cummings believes the bigger field on Saturday will suit her better. “She should be better suited in a slightly bigger field with a better tempo here and with the opportunity to get some cover and get a run off the speed,’’ Cummings said. “But she still needs to lift now that she’s getting into a set weights race against some very nice fillies like Formality and Champagne Cuddles.”

Spieth Heads Concorde FieldDual Group One-placegetter Spieth (Thorn Park) is Crownbet’s $2.60 favourite for Saturday’s Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Randwick. The Bryce Heys-trained four-year-old, who was among the six acceptors for the $150,000 race, has not been seen since running tenth in the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in April and has drawn barrier three for jockey Corey Brown. Saturday’s Group Three also sees the reappearance of the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Group One winner Redzel (Snitzel) who will race from barrier six and is rated a $3.80 chance. The pair will line up alongside the John Thompson-trained stakes performer Nieta (Nicconi). Click here to view the Randwick acceptances.

Thousand Guineas Aim For BlondieAfter picking up a pelvis injury following her unplaced run in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in February, Blondie (Reward For Effort) made a winning return to the track yesterday when winning a Benchmark 70 (1000m) at Sandown Hillside. The filly beat Fox Swift (Foxwedge) by three quarters of a length and the performance has convinced her trainer Brendan McCarthy that she is on the right path for the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Caulfield on 14 October. "I'm hoping we can head through to the Thousand Guineas and I think this was a good stepping stone for her," McCarthy said.

Lina’s Hero Remains UnbeatenThe Tony Vasil-trained Lina’s Hero (Elvstroem) maintained his unbeaten record when he won the M & D Dillon Constructions Handicap (1300m) at Sandown Hillside yesterday and could now be aimed at the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). The three-year-old gelding beat Mighty Boss (Not A Single Doubt) by just over three lengths and winning jockey Ryan Maloney said he could progress into a stakes performer. "He's definitely got black type ability," Maloney said. "If his mental capacity holds up I'd say the perfect race would be the Caulfield Guineas if he's headed in that direction.”

Faeger Wins At CanterburyThe Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Faeger (Choisir) broke his maiden on his sixth start when he took out the All Too Hard At Vinery Maiden Handicap (1100m) at Canterbury yesterday. Faeger was purchased by James Harron Bloodstock for $560,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the Bell View Park Stud and he narrowly defeated Hong Qigong (Pierro) by head with another short-head back to Lightz (Sepoy) in third. "Blinkers really switched him on," said winning jockey Tim Clark. "With race fitness on his side he was able to put himself into a good spot and he fought on strongly."

Marishka Makes Winning DebutLater in the afternoon, Marishka (Exceed And Excel) followed up her stablemate Faeger’s

victory when she made winning debut over 1100 metres. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained filly, who is a sister the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Overreach and now Widden Stud-based sire Outreach, beat Shudabeen (I Am Invincible) by three quarters of a length. "It was a pleasing effort. She had a lovely run in transit and popped out a the right time. She was good late," Snowden said. "She's going to gain a lot out of today. She did everything right back at the stables and handled the day extremely well. There's a fair bit of upside to her.”

Ability To Bobbie LewisWith some high-class targets on Ability’s (Reward For Effort) agenda trainer Robert Smerdon has opted to bypass the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday. A last start winner of the Bletchingly Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), his fourth consecutive win, he will instead be aimed at the Bobbie Lewis Quality (Gr 2, 1200m) at Flemington on 16 September. "He's only had four runs for the prep but if he lined up there on Saturday over 1400 metres against that quality he could have a real gut-buster to finish sixth and you've got no horse left,” Smerdon told Racing.com. "We've decided to keep our powder dry and look for something where he'll be more competitive.”

Currie Cops Whip BanA suspension to Luke Currie for overuse of the whip in a winning ride at Sandown will not impact on the jockey's upcoming feature race commitments. Currie rides Hey Doc (Duporth) in the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield and will start a six-meeting suspension after that meeting. Meanwhile, jockey Ben Melham will miss next Saturday after he picked up a careless riding suspension. Melham was outed for his ride on Miss Vixen (Foxwedge) and will begin his ban after Caulfield this Saturday.

Brown Rides TrebleJockey Ethan Brown chalked up his first metropolitan treble at Sandown Hillside yesterday, his third overall after previous trebles at country venues Whycheproof and Bairnsdale. Brown rode Blondie (Reward For Effort) in the opening race, before adding to his tally when he guided Motown Lil (Sebring)

and Speedeor (Northern Meteor) to victories later on in the afternoon. Brown says being fitter, both physically and mentally, has helped improve his riding throughout the year. "Outside of race riding I'm doing a lot of training, getting a lot fitter and more flexible," Brown said. I do a bit of boxing, a lot of swimming. It's improved my fitness and helps clear my mind and helps me ride a better race.

Pagus To Join CurrieJockey Mark Pegus will relocate to Queensland to link with Toowoomba trainer Ben Currie. Pegus will ride at Cairns on Friday and is then expected to be on some of Currie's horses at Toowoomba on Saturday night. "We recently had a chat about him moving up here. He came up and rode work for us about three weeks ago," Currie said. "I am keen to expand my stable and it would be ideal to have an experienced jockey who can ride them work and then in the city. I am keen to have more metropolitan runners on both Saturdays and midweek. There is a chance Mark can ride some for us at Doomben or the Gold Coast on Saturday."

New Zealand

Gingernuts To Run In Tarzino TrophyThe Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) bound Gingernuts (Iffraaj) will get his spring campaign underway in the Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1, 1400m) at Hawke’s Bay on Saturday. A winner of the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) and Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) last preparation, the Jamie Richards and Simon Autridge-trained Gingernuts is expected to have two starts in New Zealand before travelling to Australia. "The 1400 metres will be too short for him on Saturday," said Richards. "He'll get back and be running on at the finish, but it's not his race against the likes of Kawi, Perfect Fit and Volpe Veloce. He will go back to run in the mile and then, all going well, he could go to Melbourne but that will be decided after the Windsor Park." No Weather Worries For Volpe Veloce Co-trainer Graham Richardson says he is not concerned about the prospect of a wet track at Hawke’s Bay on Saturday as he prepares to run Group Two winner Volpe Veloce (Foxwedge) in the Tarzino Trophy. The four-year-old filly has only

been beaten once in a nine start career, including winning the Eight Carat Classic (Gr 2, 1600m) at Ellerslie in December. “You start thinking too much and stressing about the weather,” Richardson said. “She’s well, we’ve done what we have to do and what will be, will be. She galloped on Tuesday at Matamata and did not handle the wet conditions at all, but Matamata is very heavy and Hastings is a different story.”

Marsh Happy With Tarzino PairTrainer Stephen Marsh has said he is happy with the condition of Sofia Rosa (Makfi) and Thee Auld Floozie (Mastercraftsman) as he prepares them for their runs in the Tarzino Trophy on Saturday. Sofia Rosa will be aiming to win her first race since she took out the 2016 Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m), while Group One winner Thee Auld Floozie has not been seen since running fifth in the Travis Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) in April. “I can’t fault either one of them,” said Marsh. “Thee Auld Floozie has come back very well and she should like the track. It will be short of Sofia Rosa’s best distance, but like the other horse she should sprint well fresh.”

Weather Weather Watch For FlamingoCo-trainers David and Emma Haworth have said Flamingo (Pins) will only run in the Hastings - Heart Of Hawke’s Bay (1300m) if the going is not wet. The four-year-old filly has not been seen since running third in the Cambridge Breeders' Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) in April. “We won’t be going anywhere if it’s wet,” Emma Haworth said. “We’re not in a hurry with her, she’s ready but we’re not racing her for the sake of it. There are no big plans for her just yet. We’ll have a talk with Mark and some decent races will be on the cards for her later this year.”

Guineas Hopefuls Ready For ActionThe Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards-trained duo, Griffin (Iffraaj) and Summer Monsoon (Stratum) will be on trial for the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) when they line up in El Roca Sprint (Listed, 1200m) at Hawke’s Bay on Saturday. Griffin, who is a brother to dual Group One winner Gingernuts is in unbeaten in one start, while Summer

Monsoon finished second to Slipper Stakes (Listed, 1200m) in February. “They are both nice three-year-olds on their way to the Guineas races, hopefully ending up at Riccarton.”

Permit Delay For FreedmanTrainer Lee Freedman has had his intended move to Singapore delayed as he is still awaiting a work permit. He is set to take over the running of Laurie Laxon’s yard, but Laxon has applied to stay on in Singapore for a few weeks longer as Freedman is not yet able to take over his stables. "Lee hasn't got his work permit yet, it should come through next week. So, the plan is to fill in for him until he gets it," Laxon said. "I've already asked the Singapore Turf Club officials for permission, and it's been approved. We will take it on a week-by-week basis."

HKJC Purchase £250,000 Dark Angel ColtMark Richards of the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) purchased a colt by Dark Angel (Acclamation) for £250,000 on day two of the Goffs UK Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale yesterday. The Camas Park Stud-consigned colt, who was catalogued as Lot 295, is from the family of dual Group / Grade One winner Serious Attitude (Mtoto) and was the HKJC’s fifth purchase at the sale overall. "We've bought some nice Dark Angels in previous years," Richards said. "This colt is a nice athletic horse and had a bit of presence and a nice walk. The team tries to find the right ones and I feel this lad is absolutely the right one.”

Dark Angels Prove PopularTwo further yearlings by Yeomanstown Stud stallion Dark Angel proved popular at Doncaster yesterday, selling for £200,000 apiece. Shadwell purchased the first, a filly catalogued as Lot 327 from the family of last year’s Dubai Golden Shaheen (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Muarrab (Oasis Dream). Later in the session, Joe Foley purchased Lot 372 a colt out of the stakes-placed Abbakova (Dandy Man) for the same price on behalf of Steve Parkin’s Clipper Logisitics.

Shadwell Purchase Olympic Glory ColtA colt by Arrowfield Stud shuttler Olympic Glory (Choisir) was purchased for £140,000 by Shadwell at the second session of the Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale yesterday. The February-born colt, catalogued as Lot 246, is from the family of Group Two winner Passing Glance (Polar Falcon) and was consigned by Anna Sundstrom’s Coulonces Sales. “Olympic Glory was sold here (at Doncaster) and we thought then this was the perfect place (to sell). He's a lovely, lovely colt," Sundstrom told the Racing Post. A full report on the final day of the Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale will appear in tomorrow’s issue of ANZ. Click here to view the sale results.

Bated Breath Colt Tops Day OneA colt by Juddmonte Farms stallion Bated Breath (Dansili) finished as the top lot on the opening day of the Goffs UK Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale on Tuesday. The Ballyhimikin Stud-consigned colt, catalogued as Lot 195,

is from the family of Group Two winner Missit (Orpen) and was purchased by Joe Foley on behalf of Steve Parkin for £270,000. "Steve and I saw him on Sunday morning and thought he was a special colt," said Foley. "He's from a good farm and is by an emerging sire."

Orbis Active At Opening SessionAustralian bloodstock agent Justin Bahen was active at Doncaster on Tuesday, purchasing four lots on behalf of Hong Kong-based Orbis Bloodstock Pty Ltd. The four lots totalled £267,000 and included Lot 89, a February-born colt by Dandy Man (Mozart) from the draft of Ballyhane who cost £110,000. The colt is the first foal out of the Oasis Dream (Green Desert) mare Interlacing while his second dam is the stakes winner Short Dance (Hennessy).

Marsha On Track For Abbaye RepeatMarsha (Acclamation) has come out of her recent success in the Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) in good shape and trainer Sir Mark Prescott

says she is on course to defend her Prix de l'Abbaye (Gr 1, 1000m) crown in October. "She's good and fine. She'll go to France again in early October,” Dan Downie, racing manager for owners the Elite Racing Club, told the Sporting Life. “The plan is for her to still go through the ring at the end of the year. She's been a wonderful filly for us and she has achieved so much."

Nezwaah Given Chantilly OptionTrainer Roger Varian has said Group One winner Nezwaah (Dubawi) could run in the Prix de l'Opera (Gr 1, 2000m) at Chantilly on 1 October. The four-year-old filly was an impressive winner of the Pretty Polly Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) at the Curragh in July, but proved no match for Enable (Nathaniel) when running fourth in the Yorkshire Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) on her most recent start. “She's come out of the race well. The ground was a bit sticky for her and I think we'll probably drop her back to a mile and a quarter,” Varian told Sporting Life. "We'll look at something like the Prix de l'Opera with her."

Orbis Bloodstock takes its name from the Latin word for 'whole world', a fitting moniker for an enterprise based in Hong Kong

and buying in Doncaster through the Australian agent Justin Bahen. As such, its investment of £267,000 for four lots was an apt measure of the increasingly international complexion of the market in a searing start to the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale on Tuesday.

"This is the first time I've been to Doncaster," Bahen told the Racing Post.

"The results this sale has had on the track have been impossible to ignore, so I've just

followed the trend by coming here. When you look at the likes of Barney Roy and Harry Angel, your ears prick.

“Lots of sales around the world get stakes horses, but they're proper Group One performers."

Though a new name on the European scene, Orbis has already laid foundations in Australia, with the Listed-winning Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) colt Ducimus among its burgeoning southern hemisphere stable.

And while it is no secret that domestic prize money levels trail behind those on offer in Australia, the resale value of horses with form in

Orbis Bloodstock Active At Goffs UK Premier Sale

Britain and Ireland provides an ample draw for an operation that has selling as well as racing on its agenda.

"My client's vision is to build a global brand not only as a buyer, but as an owner that's happy to trade," said Bahen.

"If you find a good horse in Europe there's a big exit strategy as you're well rewarded - not so much in prize money, but if you're happy to sell you can keep the books looking pretty healthy.

“When it comes to racehorses you have to have an entry, an exit and a culling strategy, and we want to be recognised as traders as well as buyers."

Bahen's purchases were headed by a Dandy Man (Mozart) colt from Ballyhane Stud at £110,000; while he also secured colts by Battle Of Marengo (Galileo) consigned by Aughamore Stud for £65,000; Havana Gold (Teofilo), consigned by Trickledown Stud, for £50,000; and Harbour Watch (Acclamation), offered by Sherbourne Lodge, for £42,000.

"The Dandy Man will be trained by George Scott," he revealed. "The Havana Gold and the Harbour Watch will go to David Simcock.

“I was told when you come to Doncaster you'll find the athletes, and that suited me perfectly as that's very much how I approach every sale. Whether it's Doncaster or Magic Millions, I look at the horse first and the page second.

"The ones I've got very much fit the brief we have. The Dandy Man looks a really nice up-and-running early two-year-old type, while the other two are really nice, well-balanced horses that look like they'll be late-maturing two-year-old or three-year-olds. I'm really happy with all four of them."

Bahen added that his Premier Sale purchases were not the only new addition to the Orbis stable, as a member of its Australian-based broodmare band, Kiss Moon (Malibu Moon), had delivered a "cracking" Frankel (Galileo) colt at Yarraman Park in the Hunter Valley in the early hours of the morning.

"I've had a fantastic time in Doncaster," he added. "The catalogue is really strong, the hospitality here has been second to none, it's been a great experience."

The National Stud currently stands Group One-winning two-year-old Marcel (Lawman) and Group Two winner Gregorian (Clodovil), and the operation’s chairman Ben Sangster said he was looking forward to welcoming Tivaci in 2018.

"This is a very exciting, ground breaking venture for the stud and we are very much looking forward to working with one of the major stallion farms in New Zealand," Sangster said.

Tivaci TRISH DUNELL

New Waikato Stud stallion Tivaci (High Chaparral) will shuttle to the National Stud in Newmarket during the Northern Hemisphere

breeding season. The former Michael Moroney-trained five-

year-old was retired from racing after winning the All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick in the autumn and is due to stand his first season at stud for a fee of NZ$20,000 (plus GST) this spring.

Waikato Stud principal Mark Chittick said that it was a great boost for the stallion that he was attracting interest from overseas ahead of his maiden season at stud.

"It's a great endorsement for Tivaci and demonstrates to breeders just how in demand these horses with Australian Group One success up to the mile are," Chittick said.

"Waikato Stud identified Tivaci as a potential sire prospect as a three-year-old, when he was consistently reeling off impressive final 600 metre sectionals.

“At no time was his electric turn of foot more obvious than when he completed the final 600 metres of the Listed Kensington Stakes at Flemington in 32.10 seconds – they have to be pretty special to be able to do that.

"In the wake of Tivaci's brilliant pattern-defying Group One All Aged Stakes win at Randwick, we were approached by connections

of the English National Stud. When they came out to the stud to inspect him, it is safe to say they were very impressed.”

Happy Like A Fool had opened up a healthy advantage on the field, but as soon as Doyle asked Threading for her effort she responded and quickened up well to score decisively.

Madeline (Kodiac) stayed on well to finish two lengths adrift in second, while Mamba Noire (Wootton Bassett) finished a further three quarters of a length adrift in third.

On Saturday, the Richard Fahey-trained Sands Of Mali (2 c Panis - Kadiania by Indian Rocket) powered to an impressive victory in the Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at York.

The colt had opened his account over six furlongs at Nottingham earlier this month, having finished seventh on debut at York in July, and he was sent straight into the lead by jockey Paul Hanagan.

He quickened clear around two furlongs out and never looked like being overhauled, finishing two and three quarter lengths clear of Invincible Army (Invincible Spirit) in second at odds of 14/1, with Cardsharp (Lonhro) a length further adrift in third.

The promising Wells Farhh Go (2 c Farhh - Mowazana by Galileo) stretched his unbeaten record to two when landing the Acomb Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at York last week.

The Tim Easterby-trained colt made a positive impression when breaking his maiden on debut at the same track last month, and he was ridden off the pace in the early stages by jockey David Allan.

He moved into a challenging position approaching the final furlong and got his head down on the line to prevail by a nose over James Garfield (Exceed And Excel), with the Phoenix

Thoroughbreds-raced Lansky (Dark Angel) a further three and three quarter lengths behind in third.

At Goodwood on Saturday, the Richard Hannon-trained Billesdon Brook (2 f Champs Elysees - Coplow by Manduro) ran out a ready winner of the Prestige Stakes (Gr 3, 7f).

The two-year-old filly, who was most recently seen winning at Glorious Goodwood on 3 August, quickened up well under Sean Levey to beat Whitefountainfairy (Casamento) by three quarters of a length with the same distance back to Miss Bar Beach (Choisir) in third.

US Navy Flag (2 c War Front - Misty For Me by Galileo) gave trainer Aidan O’Brien his fifth win in the Round Tower Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at the Curragh on Sunday.

The colt was most recently seen running fourth in the Phoenix Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at the Curragh earlier in the month and he took full advantage of the drop in class to beat Landshark (Bated Breath) by an impressive six lengths with Ball Girl (Tagula) a further neck away in third.

The William McCreery-trained Liquid Amber (2 f Kitten’s Joy - Pachattack by Pulpit) showed a smart turn of foot to win the Flame Of Tara Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) at the Curragh on Sunday.

Bred and raced by the Niarchos Family, Liquid Amber, who was having her second career start, took the lead with 200 yards left to travel and pulled away to score an emphatic five length victory over the Aidan O’Brien-trained favourite Ballet Shoes (Galileo).

The John Gosden-trained Enable (3 f Nathaniel - Concentric by Sadler’s Wells) secured a fourth successive Group One victory yesterday, with a phenomenal front-running display to land the Yorkshire Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f).

The winner of both the Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) and Irish Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) was most recently seen beating dual Group One winner Ulysses (Galileo) in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 1m4f) at Ascot, and she

was sent to the front early by Frankie Dettori. The filly always appeared to be travelling

comfortably in the lead and, and it was quickly apparent in the straight that she had the race in safe keeping as her rivals struggled to keep up.

Dettori asked her to stretch at the two-furlong marker and she stretched clear to beat Group Two-winning stablemate Coronet (Dubawi) by five lengths, with Queen’s Trust (Dansili) a further three quarters of a length behind in third.

After the race John Gosden confirmed that the Juddmonte Farms-bred and raced Enable would now head to the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) at Chantilly on 1 October, for which she is a short-priced favourite.

John Gosden enjoyed further success with his three-year-olds at York last week, as the promising Cracksman (3 c Frankel - Rhadegunda by Pivotal) ran out a dominant winner of the Great Voltigeur Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f).

The progressive colt finished placed in both the Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) and the Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) earlier this season, and he relished the drop down in class under Frankie Dettori.

He quickened up impressively between runners around three furlongs out and put the race to bed in a matter of strides, beating Venice Beach (Galileo) by six lengths into second, with the same distance back to Mirage Dancer (Frankel) in a distant third.

Gosden said the colt could be given the rest of the season off, with his four-year-old campaign likely to centre around the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in July.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained Rain Goddess (3 f Galileo - Where by Danehill Dancer) stayed on well for pressure to win the Snow Fairy Fillies Stakes (Gr 3, 1m1f) at the Curragh on Sunday.

The three-year-old filly had not won since making a successful debut at Leopardstown last September, but has performed with credit in some high-class races this season including running second in the Pretty Polly Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) and second to Enable in the Irish Oaks.

She showed no ill-effects from her recent trip to America, where she ran eighth in the Beverly D Stakes (Gr 1, 9.5f), travelling strongly and quickening well to beat Intimation (Dubawi) by half a length with the same distance back to Dawn Of Hope (Mastercraftsman) in third.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Ulysses (4 c Galileo - Light Shift by Kingmambo) ran out a decisive winner of the £1,000,000 International Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2.5f) at York last week.

The Niarchos Family-raced four-year-old colt travelled stylishly into contention from off the pace under champion jockey Jim Crowley and he eased clear to beat the three-year-olds Churchill (Galileo) and Barney Roy (Excelebration) by two lengths and a neck respectively.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained Cliffs Of Moher (Galileo) cut out the early running but was pestered on the front-end by the Godolphin-raced Barney Roy, and the pair kicked for home around half a mile out.

Churchill gave chase and moved alongside Barney Roy at the two-furlong marker, but Crowley bided his time aboard the progressive son of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) and produced

him with a perfectly timed run to win going away inside the final furlong.

The Sir Mark Prescott-trained Marsha (4 f Acclamation - Marlinka by Marju) added a second Group One to her CV when she put in an astonishing late run in the final furlong to land the Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) at York on Friday.

A winner of last season’s Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp (Gr 1, 1000m), Marsha was able to reverse the form with the Wesley Ward-trained Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy) yesterday, with the American filly having held the upper hand in the King's Stand Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) at Royal Ascot.

Lady Aurelia cut out the running in the early part of the contest, showing her usual raw speed to gain a healthy advantage on the field entering the final two furlongs.

However, under a late drive by jockey Luke Morris, Marsha appeared out of the pack to run down the daughter of Scat Daddy (Johannesburg) in the final stride to score a nose victory, with the Charles Hills-trained Cotai Glory (Exceed And Excel) adrift in third.

The Alain Couetil-trained Tiberian (5 h Tiberius Caesar - Toamasina by Marju), who is co-owned by Australian Bloodstock, tuned up for his assault on the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) with a brave victory in Sunday’s Grand Prix de Deauville (Gr 2, 2500m).

Last seen winning the Prix de Reux (Gr 3, 2500m) at the same track earlier in the month, the five-year-old stayed on strongly all the way to the line to beat Doha Dream (Shamardal) by a short-neck with another length back to Travelling Man (Oasis Dream) in third.

Tiberian was settled towards the back by jockey Oliver Peslier in the early part of the contest and the pair began to make their move after the halfway point.

Having improved into third, Peslier asked the entire for his effort with a furlong left to travel and he responded in taking fashion to come away with the victory.

The David Simcock-trained Lightning Spear (6 h Pivotal - Atlantic Destiny by Royal Academy) ran out a game winner of the Celebration Mile (Gr 2, 1m) at Goodwood on Saturday, winning the race for the second successive year.

The son of Pivotal (Polar Falcon) was settled just behind the leaders by jockey Oisin Murphy with the early pace being set by Hathal (Speightstown).

As the field entered the final two Lightning Spear looked to be struggling, but he picked up strongly inside the final 150 yards to run down Zonderland (Dutch Art) in the final strides to win by a nose, with Hathal sticking on well to finish third.

The Andrew Balding-trained Montaly (6 g Yeats - Le Badie by Spectrum) also left it late to the land the Lonsdale Cup (Gr 2, 2m½f) at York on Friday.

High Jinx (High Chaparral) led the field early on, with fancied runners Dartmouth (Dubawi) and Thomas Hobson (Halling) racing prominently, while Montaly found the early pace too sharp and raced at the tail of the field.

Dartmouth, who is raced by The Queen, looked sure to score a brave win when edging ahead inside the final furlong, but Montaly flew home late to collar that rival by a nose, with Melbourne Cup nominee St Michel (Sea The Stars) a further half a length behind in third.

VERDICT Music Box seems to be on the upgrade to judge from a Group 3second at Leopardstown since her victory over a number of these

rivals at Galway. However, RAYMONDA, one of her victims at Galway, has a goodchance on overall form and may turn the tables now that the Weld team is firing on allcylinders. In order to win, she will also have to reverse Fairyhouse form with Realtra

who is respected along with the other Brirish raider Same Jurisdiction. [AlanSweetman]

How did you become involved in breeding?

"I became involved in breeding, I suspect, the same way most people do. We liked racing and suddenly we had a mare who retired from racing, and we were looking at each other wonder what we are going to do so we said ‘let’s breed from her’. We started breeding and breeding very naively and unsuccessfully. We got smarter and my ex-accountant brain meant that we thought there was a better way of doing this, and I became a firm believer in pedigrees. In the early ‘90s the opportunity came up to become the Australasian representative for Brain Pedigree Analysis and I learned then that what I was doing was amateurish compared to the level of research that they were doing, so we have basically used Brain Pedigrees for all our matings and we have been breeding successfully for a long time since then."

How many mares do you own?

"At Laurel Oak, we manage 15 mares at a time and we try and keep them at commercial quality. One of the things that Brain told us very early, and it took a long time to really appreciate, was that a good mating will help a mare fulfil her potential, and we were too much into the pedigree theory rather than the quality of the mare. Since we have upped the ante with the quality of the mares, we have got a lot better in terms of producing high-quality racehorses."

Who are your favourite mares among the Laurel Oak broodmare band?

"Our best known mare would be Ancient Song, who we own with Stuart Ramsey. She was a Group One winner who holds the wonderful record of selling a $1,600,000 Sepoy yearling a

couple of years ago at the Inglis Easter Sale. He was the highest priced yearling by a first season stallion to sell in the Southern Hemisphere. We also have Lady Zhivago, who was a good city-class race mare, who is the mother of the Wellington Cup winner Maygrove. Texarcana was a good city-class mare who is well bred and the reason we kept her was because we knew the family was full of genuine racehorses, even though it wasn’t sexy on the pedigree page. And we raced a lot of them, so we knew how good they were. Rebel Dane is a product of mating her with California Dane. Since then, we have been buying mares and we have had some good results. One of the mares is Power Of Love, who is the mother of Vaucluse Bay, who won two Saturday races in a row at Rosehill recently."

FEMALE LINE AND WHAT

OPPORTUNITIES THERE ARE TO NOT

NECESSARILY DUPLICATE THOSE

ANCESTORS BUT COMPLEMENT

What is the best piece of advice you have received or you would give about breeding?

"There are two things. Use quality mares and ring us up for a Brain Pedigree Analysis, because a good mating will help you breed a good horse."

Are there any pedigree nicks / stallions you like and why?

"No, for each mare there are going to be particular stallions who are suited to her and her pedigree, but that stallion might not suit other mares. I am a firm believer that part of the reason why some stallions succeed on one side of the world and not the other is that the gene pool of mares they are covering does not include the right mares for them. They could potentially succeed in that part of the world if they had the right gene pool of mares. Sometimes the gene pool of mares are so different that it doesn’t suit the stallion."

What do you look for when selecting a mare? Is there a criteria you use when buying mares?

"I look at the family, the broodmare sire, the female line and what opportunities there are to not necessarily duplicate those ancestors but complement those ancestors. A good mating is not necessarily a duplication of a single ancestor but a merging of compatible bloodlines where the families are so similar, and they have worked in the past. For example, our horse Rebel Dane with Danehill and More Than

Ready has worked very well in the past. If you understand pedigrees, there is a reason why Danehill and More Than Ready work well and that is because the two pedigrees complement each other. There is plenty of line breeding going back in the pedigrees."

How do you see the industry changing in the next five years?

"The outlook for the breeding industry is outstanding. The level of international investment now is phenomenal and the prize money levels in the major states of New South Wales and Victoria, which are also the key breeding sectors, has been fantastic. As long as international involvement remains, and there are no major changes to interest rates or the world political scene, the market is going to be very good. Those international investors have really changed the game. We were able to go and buy mares four or five years ago who we would have no hope of buying now, because of the international competition and the willingness to pay vast amounts of money for them. Australian breeders need to get into a position where they can sell to these people rather than necessarily competing against them."

Which stallion do you think is the most underrated?

"I couldn’t speak of one in particular because the stallions are all pretty well exposed."

What do you think of the first season stallions? Do you support them or do you like to go with the proven stallions?

"We do support the first season stallions, but again, because we are trying to breed commercially, which is our first thought, we will assess the mare and what stage of life she is up to, what number foal will it be, and what she has achieved so far when deciding suitable stallions. We do tend to avoid third season sires because we have been caught out a few times, because if the first crop hasn’t fired, you can get burnt. We will look at the compatibility and the price of that stallion relative to the mare. If she has already produced something and can be mated to any stallion, then the foal is still going to sell well. If you end up with a mare who hasn’t got a good breeding record, and the horse is by a stallion who isn’t going so well, you are in a lot of trouble."

Who do you most admire / respect in the industry?

"I couldn’t nominate any single person. There are so many fantastic operators in the industry and some new farms on the block, with Newgate being one of them. Then you have some wonderful established farms like Widden, Coolmore, Arrowfield, and Swettenham Stud with Adam Sangster in Victoria, who is standing Rebel Dane. Darley is another one, so I can’t exclude anyone."

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Pariah’s (Redoute’s Choice) [118p] first up win in Saturday’s San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m)

at Rosehill took him immediately into second place on Timeform’s early season rankings.

Top of the three-year-old table currently is the Gerald Ryan-trained colt Menari (Snitzel) [120p] after his impressive first up win in The Rosebud (Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill a fortnight previously.

Pariah did defeat Menari in the Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) in January and after four starts as a two-year-old, which included second in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), he earned a 118 Timeform ranking to finish just behind season leaders Invader (Snitzel) [119] and She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) [119].

Then on Saturday, having his first run since

finishing 11th on a Heavy 10 track behind She Will Reign in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in March, Pariah ran on strongly to score stylishly, matching his two-year-old peak with an 118p Timeform rating.

Pariah is now the equal highest rated winner of the San Domenico Stakes since 2005, with Media (Gilded Time) [118] who won the same year it became a Group Three race.

The Gerald Ryan-trained filly Snitzerland (Snitzel) did run 117p (before the fillies’ allowance) in 2012 while last year’s winner, the Team Hawkes-trained Star Turn (Star Witness), rated 116.

Blake Shinn rode Pariah well on Saturday, easing the colt from his outside barrier (9) and settling back in seventh place on the rails, before switching into open space shortly after turning for home.

Pariah then ran on strongly to take the lead at the 100 metres before running out a one length winner over Team Hawkes-trained colt Chauffeur (Snitzel) [111] with Godolphin-raced filly Jorda (Exceed And Excel) [109] a neck away in third.

Chauffeur also made a pleasing return and ran to a 111 Timeform figure, his highest since rating 115 when second to Houtzen (I Am Invincible) [113p] in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at the Gold Coast in January.

While the third-placed Jorda also went well, she looked a little unlucky after not gaining fully clear running in the straight, having being handily placed to the home turn.

Having only her second race start Jorda returned a Timeform figure of 109, one pound below her only previous start when winning the

capped off a good day for the Bjorn Baker stable with a smart win in the Benchmark 95 Handicap (1200m).

Having her first start since June, Bonny O’Reilly settled just behind the leaders, before getting along the rails at the 200 metres to comfortably defeat the Anthony and Edward Cummings-trained No Doubt (Not A Single Doubt) [99] by just under a length.

Bonny O’Reilly was the top-weight carrying 59.5 kilograms and returned a new career-peak Timeform figure of 110, six pounds above her previous best and taking her record to an impressive eight wins in 12 career starts.

Gimcrack Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Randwick last October.

Pariah is now expected to head to The Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday week, with Menari looking set to reoppose, in the lead up to the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Rosehill on 23 September.

Another smart performance at Rosehill on Saturday was the Bjorn Baker-trained colt Addictive Nature (Savabeel) [106] who staged a game effort in holding on for a narrow but impressive win in the Ming Dynasty Quality (Gr 3, 1400m).

After showing good pace, Addictive Nature worked at a solid tempo before taking a clear break inside the 300 metres. He then held off Assimilate (Sebring) [108] to score by a short head, with Astoria (Medaglia d’Oro) [106] just under two lengths further back in third.

Having only his third race start, Addictive Nature returned a new career peak Timeform figure of 106, ten pounds above his second to Shogun Sun (Written Tycoon) [98] in a Benchmark 75 for three-year-olds (1200m) at Randwick on 5 August, at his prior start.

Addictive Nature’s 106 rating was just one pound below 2016 winner Swear (Redoute’s Choice [107] but six pounds above 2015 winner

Metallic Crown (Northern Meteor) [100].The runner-up Assimilate, a winner of his

two only other starts, lost no admirers in his first defeat, with a new career-peak Timeform figure of 108, 11 pounds above his win in a two-year-old handicap (1200m) at Randwick at his previous start on 22 July.

While third-placed Astoria was solid enough in a sound first up effort, returning a new career peak Timeform figure of 106, although he never looked like threatening Addictive Nature or Assimilate.

In the final race at Rosehill, the highly consistent mare Bonny O’Reilly (O’Reilly) [110]

Then followed: High Dive (AUS), End Of The Road (AUS), Bezzina (AUS) & Ladies’ Gem (AUS), last.

Analysis: After placing in his first two outings since resuming, the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained three-year-old Faeger broke through for his first win in six starts, scoring quite well here. He was smartly away from his outside barrier (7) and settled outside the leader (Lightz). He responded to riding on turning for home to get the better of that runner at the 50m, and then held on to score nicely.

Analysis: The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained filly Marishka staged a really promising effort in winning here on debut. She settled in third place on the rails from her good barrier (3), before going to second at the home turn. She then finished too well and after getting to the front from the leader (Shudabeen) at the 50m, she went on to score quite impressively.

Analysis: The Tony Vasil-trained three-year-old Lina’s Hero is now unbeaten after two starts, following his smart debut win a three-yea-old maiden (1212m) at Sale on 17 August, with another very good win here. He was eased to last from his outside barrier (8) before improving to fourth (deep) at the 800m, behind a steady pace. He moved up to take the lead at the 200m and then drew away to score most impressively.

First crop Yearlings on offer in 2017 for Northern Meteor’s Greatest son!

Analysis: Darren Weir-trained four-year-old Speedeor looks smart and is now the winner of four of his five starts after scoring a very good first up win here. He settled in third place (wide without cover), tracking a steady early pace. He commenced his move (in the centre of the track) at the 300m and then finished too well to comfortably overhaul the leader (Super Maxi) at the 50m, before going on to score a narrow but stylish win.
