“I will give her a bit of a gallop (this morning) and we will see how she goes and we will decide from there,” Widdup told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“The barrier draws and things like that will also determine where she goes. I won’t be sending her up (to Brisbane) if she draws the outside gate or anything like that.

“I will know more (today) and come acceptance time where we will go with her.”

A $500,000 purchase by Jadeskye Racing from the Segenhoe Stud Australia draft at the 2017 Magic MIllions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Witherspoon is being aimed at the $2,000,000 feature race at the Gold Coast on 13 January.

She ran the fastest time of the 12 heats at the Canterbury official two-year-old barrier trials over 900 metres in 53.25 seconds on 18 September before drawing the outside barrier (16) when caught wide throughout to be beaten three and a half lengths by Satin Slipper (Pierro).

“It was a huge run in the Gimcrack and it was disappointing that she drew wide but she was ready to race and I thought it would be a good experience to send her around,” Widdup said.

“At that time of year it is hard to hold them up and wait for another race. We rolled the dice and it didn’t pay off, but I thought her run had merit.”

Since the Gimcrack Stakes, Witherspoon was given a short break before running third in a Wyong barrier trial over 845 metres on 4 December, a heat won by the Allan Denham-trained Lilith (Hinchinbrook)

with the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Bondi (Snitzel) finishing second.

Bondi, who is also being aimed at the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, also won a Canterbury barrier trial on the same day as Witherspoon and was runner-up in the Breeders’ Plate (Listed, 1000m) at Randwick on 30 September.

Christian Reith rode Witherspoon in the Wyong barrier trial, but Corey Brown will partner the filly if she races in Brisbane or Mitchell Bell will take the reins if she runs at Kembla Grange.

“She is not a big filly, but she is fairly straight forward, so she doesn’t take a lot of work to get back to where she was and she had a nice little trial at Wyong last week and has come through it well,” he said.

“Bondi is well in the market for the Magic Millions and Allan Denham’s horse must have a little bit of ability, for sure, and I don’t go out to bust them in trials. It is more about seeing where they are at, so I was more than happy with the trial.”

The Calaway Gal Stakes yesterday received 23 nominations including the unbeaten Singular Sensation (Not A Single Doubt), who has won her two starts so far for trainer Steven O’Dea, and the Tony McEvoy-trained Maribyrnong Trial (Listed, 1000m) placegetter Sunlight (Zoustar).

The Chris Munce-trained Pony Power (Foxwedge), who won her only start at the Gold Coast on 7 October, is slated to resume in the Listed race, while Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have nominated the Randwick barrier trial winner The Art Of The Bar (Charge Forward).

“If the field looks too hard and she draws badly in Brisbane then I won’t be going. It is not her grand final yet and I have to place her to advantage to try and get prize money to ensure she gets into the Magic Millions,” he said.

“I don’t want to waste a run with her.” Widdup has ruled out running the half-sister to Ken Russell Memorial

Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Taking Aim (Choisir) in the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1000m) on 21 December as an option for the filly, preferring to run her on Saturday leaving four weeks to the Gold Coast carnival.

“I don’t really want to go to Wyong because if you miss the prize money there it puts you behind. This way she runs on Saturday and has a fortnight to her next run and then another fortnight into the Magic Millions,” he said.

“If she can get the right prize money this week you are not as pressured as where to run her next start and she is not a big filly anyway, so I might only give her the one run into the Magic Millions.”

Widdup plans to have at least two stablemates accompanying Witherspoon to the Gold Coast, with Suspenders (Snitzel) targeting the $1,000,000 Magic Millions Fillies and Mares Stakes (RL, 1300m) and Junglized (Snitzel) aiming for the $250,000 Magic Millions Country Cup (1200m).

Red Excitement right for VilliersTrainer Gerald Ryan is confident honest gelding Red Excitement (Excites), who ran third last start in the Festival Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m), is near his best and a strong chance in Saturday’s Villiers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Randwick. The eight-year-old gelding was runner-up in the Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Randwick on 2 September to Winx (Street Cry) and has had five starts since. "He's going as good now as any stage of his career," Ryan said. "He's feeling happy and working really well. Brenton Avdulla will ride him."

Interlocuter favourite for VilliersThe Godolphin-raced Interlocuter (Medaglia d’Oro) has been installed as Crownbet’s $3.40 favourite for Saturday’s Villiers Stakes at Randwick. The son of Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado) will be looking for his fourth straight victory and first at stakes level. The Chris Waller-trained Mister Sea Wolf (Amadeus Wolf), who ran second in the Festival Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m) on his Australian debut, is on the next line of betting rated a $5.50 chance. Meanwhile, Group Three winner Crack Me Up (Mossman) is currently a $7.50 shot to land the $250,000 race.

Chetwood entered for Razor SharpTalented sprinter Chetwood (Exceed And Excel), who has been nominated for a number of races in Sydney and interstate, could make his return in the Razor Sharp Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at Randwick on Saturday. The James Cummings-trained five-year-old, who won back-to-back stakes races in the spring of 2016, had two barrier trials in November, winning them both in preparation for his return. Chetwood has not raced since finishing unplaced in the Newcastle Newmarket (Gr 3, 1400m) on 17 March this year.

The $125,000 Razor Sharp Handicap received 19 nominations yesterday including Calanda (Snitzel), Boss Lane (Dubawi), The Monstar (California Dane) and Samantha (Snitzel).

16 for Inglis NurserySixteen juveniles have been entered for Saturday’s Inglis Nursery (RL, 1000m) at Randwick, a race won last year by subsequent Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain). Trainer Tony McEvoy has nominated Sanctimonious (Foxwedge), who was runner-up at Sandown Hillside on 2 December. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Cosimo (Written Tycoon) and Lindsay Park-trained juveniles Futooh (Sebring) and Sir Jester (Choisir) have also been nominated for the Inglis Nursery. Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott are also double-handed with Let Me Sleep On It (Manhattan Rain) and Wimlah (Sebring)

Nominations extended for Christmas CupNominations for the $125,000 Christmas Cup (Listed, 2400m) at Randwick on Saturday have been extended after only six entries were received for the race yesterday. Trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have nominated last start ATC Cup (Listed, 2000m) winner Broadside (Raise The Flag), while Chris Waller has entered Vassal (Dansili), who won at Rosehill over 2400 metres on 11 November. Veteran Prince Cheri (Lando), who joined trainer John O’Shea’s stable earlier this year, is also nominated for the Christmas Cup.

Pony Power to trialTrainer Chris Munce will see how Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) hopeful Pony Power (Foxwedge) comes out of her barrier trial at Doomben today before he commits to a start in Saturday’s Calaway Gal Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Doomben. The two-year-old filly has not been seen since she made a winning debut

@anz_news

at the Gold Coast on 7 October. "She will have a run before the Millions. But I want to see how she pulls up after a trial at Doomben on Tuesday before I commit her to a Calaway Gal start," Munce said. "She picked up $40,000 for her Gold Coast win which is usually enough to get into the Classic. But some more prize money would make a certainty of it.”

From Within to resumeFrom Within (Not A Single Doubt) will make her debut for trainer Edward O’Rourke in either a Benchmark 70 (1100m) at Canterbury or a Benchmark 75 (1100m) at Randwick on Saturday. When trained by Chris Waller, From Within was a dominant debut winner at Canterbury last December beating Invader (Snitzel) and Chauffeur (Snitzel) and was an early Magic Millions 2YO Classic favourite before finishing 13th. After failing to win in two subsequent starts she was transferred to O’Rourke, suffered an untimely splint bone injury, and he’s gone back to the drawing board. “My main aim is to get her back on track and going the right way,’’ O’Rourke said. There’s a fair bit of pressure. The owners have some expectations for her but pressure is a good thing, it makes you perform. Click here to view Saturday’s Randwick weights.

Caulfield next for VinlandTalented colt Vinland (Sebring) will likely have his next start in a Benchmark 70 (1700m) at Caulfield. The Tony McEvoy-trained three-year-old ran fifth in the Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) and was most recently seen scoring a dominant win at Sandown Hillside. "It was a similar run the other day at Sandown and he went on with it, just with the race experience," McEvoy's Melbourne stable foreman Michael Shepherdson said. "He's firing on all cylinders now. He won quite effortlessly (last start) so he pulled up amazing. We'll probably put a little bit more pressure on him this week to tighten him up and have him ready for the 1700 metres. On his win the other day, you'd think he should get it on his ear."

Crystal Dreamer to continue winning formThe Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained Crystal Dreamer (Stratum) will be looking to follow up his recent success in the Doveton Stakes (Listed, 1000m) and secure the tenth win of his career when he takes his chance in a handicap over 1100 metres on Caulfield on Saturday. "He went well [in his jump out], but he's probably fit too - he's been up a while," Zahra told Racing.com. "He won the other day, and just did a little too well the last couple of weeks, so nice day out here, nice easy trial and he'll run on Saturday at Caulfield - a place that he's had good success at." Kennewell stablemates on course for WyongTrainer Lloyd Kennewell hopes Magic Millions bound duo La Pomme De Pin (I Am Invincible) and Senor Gaudi (Master Of Design) can make significant steps towards their targets at the Gold Coast on 13 January when they line up in Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m) and Wyong Magic Millions 3YO and 4YO Stakes (RL, 1200m) respectively a week on Thursday. La Pomme De Pin put five and a half lengths on her rivals at Ballarat at her last start, giving her trainer the confidence to press on towards the Gold Coast in January. “She’s really well and has done well since her win at Ballarat,” Kennewell said. “She had a few days at the farm and she’s having a gallop on Wednesday at Warrnambool. She will head off on Sunday for the trip to Wyong.”

Bondi on track for WyongCo-trainer Peter and Paul Snowden have said they intend to run Bondi (Snitzel) in next Thursday’s Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic. The two-year-old colt has not been since running second in the Breeders’ Plate (Listed, 1000m) on debut at Randwick on 30 September. Bondi was purchased by China Horse Club, Newgate and WinStar for $400,000 from the Strawberry Hill draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Music Magnate back on trackTrainer Bjorn Baker has said Group Two winner Music Magnate (Written Tycoon) will be aimed at the Christmas Classic (Listed, 1200m)

at Randwick on 30 December. The talented sprinter has not raced since he finished 13th in the Kingsford-Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) in May, after which he was spelled having been found to have chipped a fetlock. "I watched from afar and it went well. It was good to see him back. He had a decent hit out," Baker said. "He's fit and well and back to a hundred per cent. The main thing is he's back in action. We're looking at the Christmas Classic and then a couple of very early autumn targets."

Merriest tunes up for Millions tiltStakes-winning mare Merriest (Denman) will be aimed at the Christmas Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Caulfield on Boxing Day with trainer Danny O’Brien revealing that a tilt in the Magic Millions Cup (RL, 1400m) at the Gold Coast on 13 January is also on the mares agenda. "She'll start off on Boxing Day in the Christmas Stakes, and then head up to the Gold Coast all going well,” said O’Brien. "She's got a super record second up, so we're looking to make use of that. There's some nice races in the autumn she'll probably push on to, but we're looking forward to seeing what we can do."

Killer Queen could make late bid for Gold CoastTrainer Anthony Freedman has said that Killer Queen (Not A Single Doubt) could make a late bid to run in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) after Freedman was left impressed with the filly’s jump out at Werribee yesterday. The filly showed good early speed in the jump out and won despite not being pushed out in a time of 47.96 seconds. "She's a bit late on the scene as far the Magic Millions goes, but I'll talk to the owners. We may get her up there and give her a run up

there and just see," Freedman told Racing.com. "If she won well, she's there and if she could get a run we'd look at running her."

Solar Star a possible Karaka Million contenderMeanwhile, Anthony Freedman said he could be looking to run Killer Queen’s stablemate Solar Star (Zoustar) slightly further afield, with the trainer eyeing a potential tilt in the Karaka Million (RL, 1200m) on 27 January. The filly showed a good turn of foot to win her 800 metres jump out at Werribee in 49.1 seconds. "She's in with a view to going over there for the race if she's good enough, so we'll get her to races in the next week or so and see if she is up to that level." Solar Star was purchased by her trainer and BBA Ireland for NZ$190,000 at the Karaka Premier Yearling Sale from the Westbury Stud draft.

Juvenile Vainity wins trialThe Mark Newnham-trained homebred filly Vainity (Denman) yesterday won a barrier trial at Randwick over 742 metres in the second juvenile heat conducted. Having finished runner-up at Randwick on 28 November, the filly went straight to the lead for jockey Kerrin McEvoy and was never headed, defeating the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Call Me Royal (Sebring) by a length. The Anthony and Edward Cummings-trained Leonarda (Casino Prince) finished third. Vainity rain 43.80 seconds in heat six, while in heat seven the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained filly Misteed (Exceed And Excel) won heat seven in 43.70 seconds. Click here to view yesterday’s Randwick barrier trial replays.

Muscle soreness for BartMultiple Group One winner Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars), who copped interference and pulled up sore after Saturday’s Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) in Perth, was yesterday showing signs of improvement. Jarrod McLean, Darren Weir’s assistant trainer, reported yesterday that the seven-year-old had been found to have muscle soreness. He is currently stabled at Western Australian trainer Lindsey Smith’s stables but is expected to return to Victoria next week. If he recovers, Black Heart Bart will be aimed at the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and the C F Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield in the autumn.

Extra Zero retiredVeteran Group Two winner Extra Zero (Danzero), who raced from two through to 11 years old, was retired yesterday after finishing eighth in the Werribee Cup (2000m) on Sunday. The Lindsay Park-trained gelding, who was runner-up in the 2015 Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m), won seven races with a further 33 placings in 109 starts. Extra Zero, who also won over hurdles, won at Flemington in May over 2000 metres, which was his final victory. Extra Zero won $1,757,540 in prize money during his ten seasons of racing.

Vasil ordered to front inquiryCaulfield trainer Tony Vasil has been banned from nominating any horses under his care to race after failing to attend a Racing Victoria inquiry into the alleged race day treatment of Lovani (Lonhro), who was trained by fellow Caulfield-based horseman Robert Smerdon. Racing Victoria deputy chairman of stewards Robert Cram yesterday told Racing.com Vasil would be required to attend the inquiry before any future nominations would be accepted. "It is to do with the failure to attend a stewards' invitation surrounding the Lovani inquiry,” Cram said. "We've interviewed various people, but Tony has been unable to come on more than one occasion and that's why stewards have taken that approach.”

Little Indian banned for anabolic steroid positiveA five-year-old mare trained by Robbie Laing has been banned from racing for 12 months after a blood sample taken before she raced at Mornington was found to contain an anabolic steroid. Stewards have told Laing of the confirmatory findings of the sample taken from Little Indian (Not A Single Doubt) before a Benchmark 70 handicap on September 30, and stewards are continuing their investigations. Racing Analytical Services Limited (RASL) reported the blood sample was shown to contain trenbolone, an anabolic androgenic steroid. Under the rule Little Indian cannot start in a race or official trial for 12 months from the date the sample was taken.

11 Victorian apprentices graduateEleven jockeys will graduate from Racing Victoria’s (RV) Apprentice Jockey Training Program at a ceremony on Thursday in the Owners’ and Trainers’ Lounge at Flemington Racecourse. Over the past four years, the 11 graduates have developed their riding and life skills with the support and guidance of RV’s Apprentice Jockey Coaches Darren Gauci and Matt Pumpa, Jockey Wellbeing and Safety Officer Ron Hall and Athlete and Careers Development Manager Mel Weatherley. The group, which includes eight female and three male apprentices, will graduate from training but will continue to ride as apprentice jockeys and receive support from RV. Racing NSW to help Canberra participantsSydney trainer Pat Webster will visit Canberra tomorrow to offer support to friends and family of local track rider and picnic jockey Samara Johnson who died in a car accident in which her partner Garry Kirkup was seriously injured. As well as being a successful trainer, Webster works as a drug and alcohol counsellor for Racing NSW and will go to the Canberra track as part of the Racing Mates program designed to support participants in need. "It's most important for people to talk," Webster said. "I will be going with chaplain Brother Dan Stafford and hopefully we can be of some help but we just want to make sure people know we are there and available."

Pelling appointed to QRICThe Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) has announced Tracey Pelling as the new head of its Integrity Regulation Unit. An experienced police officer, Pelling's IRU functions will include the enforcement of licensing requirements as well as stable and kennel inspections to ensure the welfare of racing animals. QRIC Commissioner Ross Barnett said Detective Sergeant Pelling brought a great deal of experience to the job. "Detective Pelling is currently the Officer-in-Charge of the Queensland Racing Crime Squad and has been

involved in investigations which have resulted in the arrest of racing industry participants for offences ranging from match (race) fixing to money laundering and serious animal cruelty," Barnett said.

Kawi to stay at TrenthamSeven-time Group One winner Kawi (Savabeel), who won Saturday’s Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), will not be tackling the Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m) and will instead race next at Trentham. Trainer Allan Sharrock has not yet decided what race Kawi will run in at Trentham, with the Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) and the Telegraph Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) on the agenda. “He’s won seven Group Ones now and he ain’t finished yet,” Sharrock said. “He won’t be going to Ellerslie though for the Zabeel Classic, if I’m going to run him over 2000 metres again it will be toward the end of his season.”

Ever Loyal on the improveTrainer Tony Pike believes that the best is yet to come with the improving Ever Loyal (Sebring). Having taken out the Canterbury Stakes (Listed, 1600m) on 28 October, Ever Loyal was sent to Riccarton to contest the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), where he finished a fine third and Pike has said he will now aim the gelding at the Karaka 3YO Million (RL, 1600m). “He did it all on one preparation and he did a very good job for a big, green horse,” Pike said. “It wasn’t the plan to lead in the Guineas, he was supposed to sit outside Bostonian who slipped at the start and Ever Loyal was left in front. That’s not his style and he’s best sitting in behind them.”

Fully Funded in target for RailwayTalented gelding Fully Funded (Fully Fledged) will now be aimed at the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. The Joanne Surgenor-trained gelding won the Counties Bowl Handicap (Listed, 1100m) at Pukekohe first up on 25 November and will have a jump out ahead of the Group One test. “I couldn’t be happier with him,” Surgenor said. “I’ll probably give him a trial or a jump out before the Railway.”

Mime suffers injuryDual Group Two winner Mime (Mastercraftsman) will miss the rest of her summer preparation after suffering from a ligament injury. The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained five-year-old mare was an intended runner in the Saturday’s Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) before the injury ruled her out of the trip to Wellington. “Unfortunately, she rolled a joint and has damaged ligaments,” said Forsman. “It’s the end of her preparation and hopefully we can get her back for the autumn.”

Aim Smart back with PikeThree-year-old colt Aim Smart (Smart Missile) is back in training with Tony Pike and the trainer has said he will be looking to start the colt off on good tracks after the weather thwarted his last preparation. An impressive winner of his only juvenile start, Aim Smart finished runner-up in the Northland Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) in the spring before a succession of rain-affected tracks cut short his preparation for the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). “We’ll be taking him along quietly and then get his confidence up with a win or two on the good tracks hopefully,” Pike said.

Take takes Longines and IFHA International Award of MeritStar japanese jockey Yutaka Take has been awarded the 2017 Longines and IFHA International Award of Merit, which recognizes distinguished horsemen and horsewomen for lifelong contributions to thoroughbred racing. He will be honored a week on Thursday in Japan ahead of the running of the Arima Kinen (The Grand Prix) (Gr 1, 2500m). "It is a great honor to receive such a prestigious award," said Take. "I have been riding the same way everywhere, and therefore did not recognize that I was making a contribution to the achievement and improvement of global horse racing. If my attitude to horse racing has delivered me international recognition with this award, I will make a continuous effort to the development of global horse racing."

The four-year-old colt came into the race off the back of a win over nine furlongs on 26 November and he had no problems with the step up in trip, beating Melmich (Wilko) by two and a half lengths with another three quarters of a length back to Ethical Funds (Giant Gizmo) in third. Malibu Moon will stand the 2018 season for an unchanged fee of US$75,000.

While Tattersalls Ireland were forced to cancel Monday's Ascot December Sale due to adverse weather conditions,

things continued as normal during day two of the Arqana Breeding Stock Sale at Deauville yesterday, admittedly with some heavy downpours and strong headwinds to contend with.

Several international visitors from Ireland and Britain had to rethink their travel plans home, as the ferries closed down for the day. A quieter morning and afternoon session followed on from Saturday’s record-breaking figures, however the market still showed depth for both mares and foals with quality.

An attractive and powerful colt by Coolmore shuttler Starspangledbanner (Choisir) bought

by Peter Morgan of Carmel Stud for €165,000 headed affairs.

Catalogued as Lot 381, the foal will revisit the sale ring next year, as Morgan said: “We loved him from the moment we saw him. He’s the only foal we’ve bought this year and we think he’s something special. He’ll be prepped and aimed at Book One of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.”

Sold by ACF Elevage on behalf of his breeder, the recently deceased Marquesa de Moratella, one of French racing’s leading owners, he is the fourth foal out of the Listed-placed Oasis Dream (Green Desert) mare Torentosa.

She is a half-sister to Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) hero Wings Of Eagles (Pour Moi), whose racing career was cut short due to injury, and will begin his stud career at his birthplace of Haras de Montaigu next year.

French sires popularThe offspring of commercial French sires

continued to prove competitive to buy, with five foals by France’s leading first-season sire Dabirsim (Hat Trick) sold for €55,000 and upwards, bringing a nice return for their breeders who produced them off a fee of €9,000.

Matt Coleman paid €72,000 for Lot 315, a colt foal by the Aga Khan’s stallion Siyouni (Pivotal), who will stand next year at a fee of €75,000 at Haras de Bonneval. Sold by Anna Sundstrom’s Coulonces Sales, the foal will head back to Ireland, with Coleman indicating he will be resold as a yearling next autumn. From the family of Group Three winners Poet (Pivotal) and France (Desert Prince), his half-brother by Excelebration (Exceed And Excel) was a 100,000 guineas yearling last year, and is in training with Sir Michael Stoute.

Lot 358, a son of first season sire Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) sold for €75,000 from Edwidge Le Metayer’s Haras du Buff to Jamie Railton, who commented: “Everyone knows the sire, he was a tough and generous horse. If he passes that onto his progeny, he should become a top-class stallion.

"His progeny have sold well so far, and this foal comes from a good stud.” The colt is the fourth foal from his dam, the five-time winner Sparkling Smile (Cape Cross), from the family of the champion Covert Love (Azamour).

The ever-popular Aga Khan draft included Lot 348, Shemda, a winning Dutch Art (Medicean) three-year-old filly sold for €100,000 to Tom Pritchard-Gordon of Badgers Bloodstock, who bid in absentia through Arqana’s Freddy Powell by phone.

The filly is a granddaughter of the Prix de Diane (Gr 1, 2100m) victor Shemaka (Nishapour), from the family of Grand Prix de Paris (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Shakeel (Dalakhani), who has recently been sold to stand at Clongiffen Stud in Ireland.

Offered as a racing prospect, she was trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre in Chantilly, breaking her maiden at Vichy last July on her third start before an unfruitful attempt at Listed level.

Buyers remain active to secure mares

Salasie, a mare by Darley shuttler Teofilo (Galileo), sold for €90,000 to JS Bloodstock for undisclosed Russian connections who declined to share their plans for her future.

Catalogued as Lot 273, the mare is from the close family of Frankel (Galileo), as her dam is a half-sister to his dam, Kind (Danehill). Consigned by Haras de Maulepaire, she is carrying to Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) on a

February cover, and has a Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer) yearling filly and a Le Havre (Noverre) colt foal to come for her.

International buyers remained active for mares, and Paul Moroney went to €82,000 to secure Lot 265, a five-year-old mare L’Acclamation (Acclamation), who will ship down to New Zealand.

He said: “She’s been bought for Trelawney Stud, one of the biggest studs in New Zealand. She will join their broodmare band, and she won’t be covered in Europe.

“She’s a three-time winner and is a good model to be a broodmare. It’s a lovely family I’ve tried to buy into before.”

Sold by Haras de Saint Arnoult, the mare is from the family of Monroe Bay (Makfi), who sold on Saturday for €420,000, and out of the Listed winner Lunaska (Ashkalani).

Turnover surpassed last year’s total by 14 per cent, and the clearance rate was an improved 82 per cent from 70 per cent in 2016.

Saturday’s marathon session means that the aggregate has already passed the cumulative total for the 2016 sale. The average showed a rise of four per cent.

Keys to Like A Carousel’s success

Like A Carousel is well named. The 8YO stayer has has been round and round - 52 times in fact - and had more than his share of ups and downs.

Saturday was definitely an ‘up’. Racing in the $250,000 Listed Sportsbet Pakenham Cup, Like A Carousel was on the second last line of betting at $41, but defied all expectations with a grinding finish to get home by a lip.

Trainer Ken Keys had considered Like A Carousel a “place chance” - particularly over the 2500m - but was a tad surprised to be standing in the winners’ stall.

Sure, this might have been Like A Carousel’s first score on the ‘flat’ since September 2014 (he had won over 3200m at Sale during a 3-run campaign over hurdles in June this year), but he’s not just there to make up the numbers.

“I could probably nominate 20 occasions when a bit more luck could have gone his way,” Keys points out. “He’s really been a marvellous horse: he could have easily won two Sandown Cups, he won the Listed Harry White over 2400m at Caulfield, ran third in a Sydney Cup and fourth in the Adelaide Cup. He’s got top four finishes in 11 stakes races and won nearly $700,000 ($678,570) in stakes. Not bad for a $10,000 yearling purchase!”

Operating from a 10 acre property at Devon Meadows in south east Victoria, Keys has trained at nearby Cranbourne racecourse since the mid 80s, producing a host of winners over the years including Group Two Sunline Stakes winner, Flushed, and Written Tycoon colt, Rich Enuff, who won the Group Two Danehill Stakes.

Flushed, who would go on to win $316,050,

was purchased by Keys for $7,000 as a yearling in Victoria, while Like A Carousel was more of a ‘home town’ hero, with the astute trainer snapping him up for $10,000 from the Armidale Stud draft at the 2011 Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

“I’ve usually got around 20 in work and buy six or seven yearlings annually, but always like to pick up one or two in Tassie,” Keys explains. “It’s worked pretty well over the years, particularly with Like A Carousel.”

Keys hails from King Island, one of the more than 330 islands that make up the state of Tasmania and is situated in the Bass Strait … pretty much smack dab between Victoria and the Apple Isle.

Famous for its beef, cheese and crackin’ crayfish pies, King Island is spread over 1000 square kilometres and home to some 1,500 souls.

“My grandparents started farming on King Island and I grew up there,” Keys reveals. “My brother, Robert, is still on the island and trains horses too, while another brother, John, is a trainer in Tasmania.

One in 310 Australians is a racehorse owner.

Play video and learn why.

“It was basically a case of you either played cricket or owned a horse!”A carpenter by trade, Keys was enticed to the mainland over 30 years

ago to train for a private owner, but it turned out to be something of a ‘carousel’ in the early days.

“The bloke I was to train for turned out to be broke, but I was too pigheaded to go back to King Island, so I decided to stay and here we still are,” Keys recalls. “I’ve had a few winners along the way so it’s all worked out in the end.”

It’s all worked out too for David Whishaw, a third generation breeder in Tasmania whose family’s Armidale Stud is the power house of a small, but tight knit breeding community.

Whishaw won’t be leaving local shores any time soon as he and the Armidale team are currently preparing 44 yearlings for 2018 sales (four in Melbourne and 40 for the Tasmanian Magic Millions at Launceston on 15 February).

Armidale Stud stood Like A Carousel’s sire Helike - ‘hell-a-key’ (named after an ancient Greek city submerged by a tsunami) - for six seasons but the Blushing Groom line stallion got sick and had to be euthanised in 2013.

“He was well related, but difficult to get breeders to support him as his progeny were always going to take time,” Whishaw adds.

“Helike ended up with only 98 live foals and 60 runners overall, but has incredibly produced four stakes winners including Tasmania’s Horse of the Year in 2016/17, Hellova Street, who has won seven stakes races, including a Group Three at Flemington.

“Full marks to people like Scott Brunton (Hellova Street’s trainer) and Ken for having the patience with them because it’s really paid off.”

Like A Carousel is the fifth live foal from Spinning World mare, Carnival Ride, a close relation to dual Group Two winner and Group One placed, Love Comes To Town.

“Unfortunately, the mare (Carnival Ride) was pensioned off last year as she only had the one live foal after Like A Carousel (2009). Isn’t that always the way? She didn’t have anything of note until Like A Carousel, who we sold fairly cheaply as a yearling and then she does nothing after,” Whishaw says with a laugh.

“All jokes aside, it’s terrific when people get a result for little outlay. It just goes to show the strength of this industry … the horse costs $10,000 and makes 70 times that figure on the track.

“It also shows breeders what Tasmania is capable of producing, particularly given the recent success of Tasmanian horses like Palentino, The Cleaner, Hellova Street and Kenjorwood on the mainland.”

Meanwhile, Keys said his Pakenham Cup winner is likely to tackle the Listed Bagot Handicap over 2800m at Flemington on New Year’s Day and possibly have another tilt at the Adelaide Cup.

“He (Like A Carousel) is an out and out stayer. There’s not a lot of options for him given the programming for longer trips and he really can’t win anything under 2500m,” Keys adds. “He absolutely loves his racing though and that stint over the hurdles in June really worked in his favour. He’ll have another crack over the jumps next winter.”

HOOFNOTE: King Island races seven times a year in December and January with the majority of trainers, jockeys, bookies and stewards flying in for the occasion. Keys continues to support the carnival with a couple of horses having remained on the island since earlier this year, while brother Robert fielded seven of the 25 runners at the opening 4-race program on 2 December.

King Island has staged horse racing since 1892 when first prize was invariably wallaby skins (which, as anyone driving around King Island after dark would know, wallabys are not in short supply).

Wonder Mossman (Mossman) the nine-year-old that refuses to accept retirement has chalked up his 17th

race win in Macau, per medium of a beautiful Andrew Calder ride in Saturday’s Korea Racing Authority Trophy (1200m) on the turf.

Calder’s brilliant horsemanship paved the way to victory for Macau’s iron horse that has twice been written off as a racing prospect.

No jockey positions his horses better in the run then Calder, and on Saturday he was at his best as he navigated a path across from barrier 12 to find cover in sixth spot one off the rails in a race run at a hectic pace, set up by Thar (Exceed And Excel) and Yang Jiang Hero (Duporth).

On the corner Wonder Mossman was ready to pounce and found plenty of space when Thar rolled out around the turn, Calder then switched across his heels to power home along the inside rail to take the prize by a neck, from the fast-finishing Krystrump (New Trumps), with Huka Eagle (Swiss Ace) a half length away in third.

It was Calder’s first ride on the old warhorse and the New Zealand jockey was full of praise for the gelding after the Class One and Two event.

“What a great old horse he is," said Calder.“It was always going to be tough from that

barrier and I was told to try and lead, but he had no chance of leading them with the speed that was in the race.

“I had to switch across Thar’s heels at the top of the straight but is was just as well I did as Krystrump would have come through and got that run."

Calder stated that Wonder Mossman will now be aimed at the Winter Trophy (Listed, 1800m) on 30 December.

The bay gelding has three wins to his credit over the distance including two Macau Gold Cups (Listed, 1800m), whilst his other

1800 metre win was the Winter Trophy (Listed, 1800m) in 2013 where he clocked 1:45.9, the fastest time recorded at the distance since Police’s (Pre Catelan) dazzling 1:45.4 in 1997.

Trainer K C “Kit” Chong has done an amazing job with Wonder Mossman who has written off twice as a racing prospect after breaking down. His return, after a six month layoff, to lead all the way to win his third Macau Gold Cup in 2016 was nothing short of sensational, and he again bounced back after being written off on 27 October to win at 1200 metres in 1:07.7.

The hard luck story out of the race was the Peter Leyshan trained Krystrump who was impeded twice down the running and was literally jumping out of the ground the last fifty metres.

Lucky Winston (Churchill Downs) was another that caught the eye from a Winter Trophy point of view. The seven-year-old came from last on the corner under Martin Wepner to finish fourth, beaten one and a half lengths.

The bubble burst for the previously unbeaten Yang Jiang Hero who was looking to make it five straight wins in Macau. The run however was better than it looked, as he was part of solid speed duel with Thar where they carved out some pretty hot sectionals early. Add to that the gelding was up 21 pounds on his previous run and to be beaten only four lengths still had plenty of merit.

Early Derby (Listed, 1800m) favorite Pearl Green (Fastnet Rock) made it five wins on the trot with an easy victory in the Japan Racing Association Trophy (1800m) under regular jockey Ruan Maia.

Wonder horse does it again

enjoyed the run of the race in third spot before taking over once heads were turned for home to race away for an easy win.

A four-year-old son of Fastnet Rock (Danehill), Pearl Green has been a real find for owner Chan Ming Wing. The gelding was originally a $460,000 purchase at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sales, no doubt as a stallion prospect.

After two barrier trials at Randwick when prepared by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, the colt failed to measure up and he was subsequently gelded and exported to Macau. Pearl Green has now furnished into a lovely four-year-old. The gelding looks the perfect Derby type being able to take up a forward position and is now proven over the Derby distance of 1800 metres.

Pearl Green keeps rising to the occasion as he progresses up the ladder and after Saturday’s win he is now on a mark of 78, double his original Macau rating of 39.

Ruan Maia booted home a double on the afternoon to take him to 20 winners and a clear lead in the rider’s standings.

Maia was successful in the opening event the Penang Turf Club Goodwill Trophy (1200m) on Winning Express (Falkirk) for trainer K C Chong.

Winning Express came with a late surge to get up in a head bobbing finish to win by a nose from Kirin Wit (Showcasing), with Dengcheng One (Publishing) in third.

Last season’s leading trainer K H Leong finished the day off with a double to share training honors with K C Chong for the afternoon.

Lucky Mate (Dream Ahead) ridden by Wayne Smith rounded off K H Leong’s day when he broke his maiden status in the last of the day, the 0-55 Three and Four-Year-Old Handicap (1200m).

It has taken eleven starts in Macau for the Australian import to crack his maiden win, however he did it in good fashion to race away in the straight and win by one and a half lengths from Big Alloy (Foxwedge), with Kelson (Casino Prince) running in third.
