Inglis is developing a contingency plan for

next month’s Australian Easter Yearling

Sale in case the Covid-19 pandemic

worsens and the federal government

imposes stringent travel restrictions in a bid to

halt the rapid spread of the potentially deadly

coronavirus.

Auction house management yesterday held

a meeting about the growing world health crisis

and the possible effect on its flagship Easter

sale, resolving to “proceed as scheduled” unless

advised otherwise by government authorities.

“We have been monitoring the Covid-19

situation closely and will continue to do so in

coming days and weeks,” Inglis managing director

Mark Webster said in a statement last night. Continued on page 2>>

“The Australian government has been

very proactive in managing this situation over

the past month, which allowed us to deliver

excellent results a week ago in Melbourne and

we anticipate the appetite for quality yearlings

will continue at Easter.

“That said, we are obviously well aware of

the coronavirus situation and the potential

complexities it may cause.

“We have developed contingency plans

to help us conduct the sale with minimal

disruptions, should the government put in place

additional travel or event-based restrictions.”

The meeting was staged as the enormity of

the situation intensified when news broke that the

United States had banned travel to and from Europe

to America for 30 days.

| 2 |

The Australian government was last night

also reportedly considering similar measures that could see travellers

banned from flying in from Europe. The UK is so far exempt from the US

ban.

If travel restrictions were implemented by the Australian government,

preventing international agents and owners from attending the Easter

sale, it could have a severe impact on the depth of the buying bench.

But Webster last night said there had been no apparent pullback from

buyers, with bookings from domestic and international investors who are

planning on attending the Easter sale “tracking similarly if not better than

previous years”.

“We will continue to communicate closely with our clients in coming

days and weeks, but at this stage it is all systems go ahead of Easter and we

look forward to hosting the world’s racing industry at Riverside Stables for

the sale in a couple of weeks,” he said.

The two-day Easter sale, known to attract many of the world’s biggest

thoroughbred investors and

averaging an Australasian-high

$353,511 in 2019, is scheduled

for April 7 and 8.

Inspections at Riverside

Stables are due to start a week

earlier, on April 1, and this week

many vendors have been holding

on-farm viewings.

At last year’s Easter sale,

19.43 per cent of the market

was made up of international

purchases, led by New Zealand,

Hong Kong and United Arab

Emirates investors.

These figures do not include

the likes of US-controlled

Spendthrift Australia, Hong Kong-based Sweetbriar Equine and the China

Horse Club-Newgate Bloodstock partnership whose purchases were

listed as Australian.

The coronavirus also has the potential to impact Inglis’ The

Chairman’s Sale and Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale in May,

while implications for the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Sale in May

and June are unknown.

The Magic Millions Gold Coast March QTIS Yearling Sale is set to

be held on Monday and Tuesday with inspections getting underway

yesterday without incident.

The Australian government has already enacted a travel ban from Italy

and health minister Greg Hunt said yesterday that they were considering

whether to expand that to other parts of Europe.

“We will continue to follow the medical advice,” the minister said.

In reaction to the latest moves from world leaders, the ASX All

Ordinaries fell by a further seven per cent yesterday to close at 5304.6,

continuing this week’s bloodletting by recording the biggest single-day

loss since the Global Financial Crisis in 2008.

Juveniles vie for Slipper berthTalented juvenile Philizzy (Snitzel) has

recovered from a minor setback in time to have

one last-ditch attempt to force her way into the

$3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)

next weekend. The Anthony Cummings-trained

filly will take her place in the Magic Night Stakes

(Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill tomorrow, her first

start in over a month. "She had a bit of a bug and

I had to go a bit slowly with her while it sorted

itself out," Cummings said. "I'm happy with her

and she's drawn a nice gate to give herself every

opportunity but it is hard to line all the form up."

Philizzy has drawn barrier six in the field of 15

which features the Peter and Paul Snowden-

trained pair of Stellar Pauline (Not A Single

Doubt) and Sancy (I Am Invincible), along

with the Tulloch Lodge trio of impressive debut

winner Kaakit Akit (Artie Schiller), speedy filly

Dubai Star (Pride Of Dubai) and debutante Only

Mine (Smart Missile). The Magic Night Stakes

was won by subsequent Slipper winner Kiamichi

(Sidestep) 12 months ago.

Sylvia’s Mother on song for CoolmoreGroup winners Sylvia’s Mother (Snitzel) and Dawn

Dawn (All Too Hard) will provide owners Rob

and Pam Crosby with an enviable two-pronged

assault on tomorrow’s Coolmore Classic (Gr 1,

1500m) at Rosehill. Sylvia’s Mother heads into the

race aiming to complete a hat-trick and co-trainer

Michael Hawkes believes she has every chance of

achieving that feat. "She is a bulldog and her last

start was a very good win," Hawkes said. "She had

to bullock her way out but he (Dwayne Dunn) rode

her well. He half waited and kept her balanced

and that enabled her to hit the line as good as she

did. She's a tough filly and she's done everything

right." Tommy Berry partners Sylvia's Mother in

the Coolmore, for which she was $4.40 equal-

favourite yesterday, with Brenton Avdulla aboard

$15 chance Dawn Dawn. Hawkes, though, cannot

fathom how the pair are so far apart in betting.

“She's a really good chance too," he said of the

supposed stable second string. "It was a great effort

last start. She came from the back and I think the

ground is going to suit her, the distance will suit

and she is just starting to hit form at the right time."

Oceanex faces tough test on returnOceanex (Ocean Park) is set to be thrown in at the

deep end when she makes her return to action in

the Coolmore. "She's a Group 2 winner and I can't

improve her by running her in moderate races,"

co-trainer Mick Price told Racing.com. "She's a

mare so I want to run in good mares’ races and it's

a waste of time over 1200 or 1400 metres. We've

done a fair bit of reverse way work with her and

she is first-up in the race but if she can work home

solidly and run in the first four or five, I'd be happy

with that. Realistic expectations are that she just

won't go up there and win. She'll settle in the back

half of the field and work home solidly. If she was

to win, it's birthday cake time."

Hawkes not scared of boom filliesHawkes Racing will leave it as late as possible

before deciding if Spend (Snitzel) will make

the trip to Sydney to contest tomorrow’s Phar

Lap Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m). The colt is set to

take on Group 1 winners Probabeel (Savabeel)

and Funstar (Adelaide) at Rosehill - but only if

conditions suit. "Never be scared of anything," co-

trainer Michael Hawkes said. "He's all about the

track. For him, it's weather dependent." Rosehill

was rated a Soft 7 yesterday with possible showers

forecast on race day. If Spend does not make

the trip, the Phar Lap field could be reduced to

six runners with Brad Widdup indicating Akari

(Snitzel) will be scratched in preference for

today’s Kembla Grange Classic (Gr 3, 1600m),

while Funstar's trainer Chris Waller has up-and-

coming fillies Subpoenaed (Rip Van Winkle) and

Nudge (Fastnet Rock) in both races.

Berry keen on rising star Master Of WineTommy Berry is looking forward to being reunited

with Master Of Wine (Maxios) when the pair

join forces in tomorrow’s Sky High Stakes (Gr

3, 2000m) at Rosehill. Berry was on board the

European import when he won his last start by

three and a half lengths and, although the five-

year-old steps up in grade tomorrow, the jockey

believes he is ready for the test. "For any horse

to win by a margin is always exciting, especially

stayers, and he’s won by a margin at his last

three starts,’’ Berry told Racing NSW. “Only being

second-up with a few weeks between runs, he will

be a touch on the fresh side. He can race keenly

at times so providing he relaxes in the run, and

hopefully there is a bit of speed on, it will assist

him, I don’t think it will affect him. He’s heading

in the right direction and being trained by the

Hawkes’ he has the right people on his side.’’

Cascadian put on noticeA spectacular scrimmage with another rival

during the Liverpool City Cup (Gr 3, 1300m)

has put added pressure on Cascadian (New

Approach) to perform in tomorrow’s Ajax

Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill. Cascadian was

embroiled in a bumping duel with the Chris

Waller-trained Imaging (Oasis Dream) last start

when Glen Boss attempted to shoulder out on

the Godolphin gelding, and after finishing fifth

and dropping a crucial rating point, trainer

James Cummings said the onus was now on

the five-year-old to step up to earn his spot in

next month's Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m).

"It hasn't done his Doncaster prospects a lot of

good, so there's a bit more significance attached

to what he does here," said Cummings. "This

will be a vital run for him to put his Doncaster

credentials on the line.” The first six placegetters

in the Liverpool City Cup will contest the Ajax

Stakes, as will Imaging.

Vandyke not feeling pressure

Having landed a first elite-level win when

taking out the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)

and moving his tally on to 10 wins in 11 starts,

trainer David Vandyke believes the pressure

is off Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) when the

gelding lines up as favourite in tomorrow’s $5

million All-Star Mile (1600m) at Caulfield. "It

was a first Group 1 for the owners and a first

Group 1 for (jockey) Ryan Maloney, so the

pressure is off and we're really enjoying this

week," Vandyke said. "I think he's probably

got to put in a career-best performance to win

the race and I'll walk away happy if he runs top

three.” Punters though are clearly expecting

another success, with Alligator Blood the $2.70

favourite. “I think it's a great honour to him

that he is that price in a field of 10 Group 1

winners,” Vandyke continued. ”I hope he lives

up to that price and wins the race, but as I said,

I'd be happy with a top-three performance

considering the long drawn out preparation

and the achievements he's made."

Sadler sounds warning about Sartorial SplendorJohn Sadler has had his problems with

Sartorial Splendor (Brazen Beau) leading

into tomorrow’s Inglis Dash (1100m) and the

trainer is now concerned as to how much rain

might fall at Caulfield. The colt had a case

of the thumps, an irregular spasming of the

diaphragm, when last in the Rubiton Stakes (Gr

2, 1100m) at Caulfield on February 8, his first

run back following a spring campaign where

both Sadler, and punters, were expecting more,

with Sartorial Splendor supported from $9.50

to $5.50. "I went into the race thinking he was

a good winning chance but he was in a very

distressed state after the race,” the trainer said.

"He got over it pretty quick, but usually when

a horse gets the thumps, they don't run any

good." Sadler decided against running Sartorial

Splendor at Flemington last week due to a wet

track and he is now facing the prospect of rain

falling at Caulfield, as well as an inside draw to

contend with. "Drawn one, who knows whether

that will be any good for him," Sadler continued.

"I'm sure that he is not as good on softer ground

and you would think that if the ground was soft,

the inside will not be the place to be. Probably

overall it doesn't look good for him."

Mornington Cup on cards for Busuttin-Young pairTrent Busuttin and Natalie Young will have no

hesitation backing up their two Mornington

Cup (Listed, 2400m) hopefuls if they run well in

tomorrow’s Mornington Cup Prelude (Listed,

2000m) at Caulfield. European import Inverloch

(Fastnet Rock) and Wangaratta Cup (2000m)

winner Salsamor (Tavistock) are set to line up

tomorrow, a week ahead of the main event which

gives the winner a ballot-free exemption into the

Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m). "One hundred per

cent we would back up," Busuttin said. "They're

both geldings and they're there to be racehorses.

It's a $150,000 race on Saturday, so it's good money

to be racing for. Neither horse is a superstar, but

they're genuine, honest horses.” Regarding their

chances, Busuttin said: “Inverloch should be in

for a good winter campaign again but he went

super second-up so I can't see why he wouldn't

run well." The weather could however be the

determining factor on Salsamor’s participation

tomorrow. Busuttin added: "If the rain doesn't

arrive for him we might save him for a Benchmark

90 at Mornington, but if the rain arrives he'll go

around and with 54 kilos on his back and the cut

in the ground, he'll run well."

Game Of Thorns on Oaks pathAustralian Bloodstock’s Luke Murrell hopes he

and business partner Jamie Lovett’s judgment

is rewarded in the Kembla Grange Classic

today when their filly Game Of Thorns (Animal

Kingdom) contests the $200,000 race. The

Kris Lees-trained three-year-old, a $180,000

yearling, was stakes-placed last November and

returned with a win at Newcastle on February

29. “Like a lot of them, we are not sure how far

she will stay, but she will get 2000 metres on her

ear, so depending on how she goes tomorrow,

our ultimate aim is the Oaks in Sydney, rather

than Brisbane,” Murrell told ANZ Bloodstock

News. “If at her next two she didn’t quite

measure up, we’d probably just back off her and

head to Queensland, that level down, for the

black type but we definitely think she is up to

Sydney at this stage. I haven’t been this excited

about a horse for a long time.” Tim Clark rides

Game Of Thorns in the Kembla Grange Classic.

Hanseatic and Chenier win trialsGolden Slipper fancy Hanseatic (Street Boss)

had his first look at Sydney yesterday with

jockey Kerrin McEvoy putting the colt through

his paces in a barrier trial. The Blue Diamond

Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up settled midfield

in the 1045-metre heat at Randwick, pulling his

way up to join the leaders on the home turn.

While he appeared to switch legs once or twice

in the straight, the Anthony Freedman-trained

youngster responded when McEvoy asked

for a final effort, pulling clear to win the trial.

Freedman also won the opening heat with

the smart three-year-old Chenier (Medaglia

D’Oro), who is heading towards the Rosehill

Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) next weekend.

Super Seth back on track

Super Seth (Dundeel) showed he was back on

track for his autumn campaign when closing

strongly to finish runner-up to Kementari

(Lonhro) in a deep trial at Randwick yesterday.

The Caulfield Guineas winner (Gr 1, 1600m)

was scratched from the Randwick Guineas

(Gr 1, 1600m) with an elevated temperature

and is scheduled to take on Te Akau Shark

(Rip Van Winkle) in the George Ryder Stakes

(Gr 1, 1500m) on Slipper day. Trainer James

Cummings indicated Kementari, who has

been gelded after proving sub-fertile at stud,

could resume in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) at

Rosehill next Saturday. Also being aimed at

the sprint first-up is the Anthony Cummings-

trained Mizzy (Zoustar), who finished sixth in

Kementari's trial. "She just keeps stepping up

week to week and she is on song for the Galaxy

first-up," Cummings said.

Sunlight to have jump-outSunlight (Zoustar) will take the next step

towards her comeback from injury when she

takes part in an 800m jump-out at Flemington

this morning. The four-year-old had surgery

to remove a bone chip from the outside of a

splint bone in a hind leg, an injury suffered in

a paddock accident after her spring campaign

last year. "She's very well," co-trainer Tony

McEvoy said. "She's just going to have a cruise

around in the morning. She won't be there to

do much. I was going to give her a gallop but I

just thought she would be more stimulated by

having a jump-out from the gates. She has come

through that surgery very well. We followed all

the recommendations and she has come back

without any problems. I want to run her on

April 18 in the R N Irwin Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m)

and that will lead her into the TAB Classic (Gr

1, 1200m)."

Apprentice Huxtable earns Boomnova rideTrainer Chris Munce has shown his faith in

stable apprentice Justin Huxtable by entrusting

him with the ride on Boomnova (Spirit Of

Boom) in tomorrow’s $500,000 The Jewel 2YO

(1200m) at the Gold Coast. Huxtable, who

is one of the tallest jockeys in Australia, has

been with Munce since last September after

moving from South Australia. He has ridden

148 winners including 10 in Queensland. "My

stable supports him but for some reason he

struggles to get outside rides," Munce said. "He

is a hard worker and still has a two-kilo claim

in the metropolitan area. Justin won on my filly

Buckets of Pride at Doomben recently and it

was a very good effort. I have no hesitation in

putting him on in a $500,000 race because he

is level-headed and doesn't panic. Justin has

done a lot of work with Boomnova and rode her

when she won a trial."

Cahill picks up Malahide rideMichael Cahill will attempt to land his first

stakes winner since his comeback from injury

when he takes the ride on Malahide (Shamus

Award) in tomorrow's Goldmarket Handicap

(Listed, 1300m) at the Gold Coast. Cahill

returned last Saturday from four months on

the sidelines after breaking his foot in a barrier

accident in October. He had three rides and

has increased that number to six this week. "I

wanted to get my weight back down so I can

ride comfortably at 54 kilos," he said. Cahill

won two Group 1 races on The Bostonian

(Jimmy Choux) last winter but missed the win

when the New Zealand sprinter claimed the

Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m) under Nash

Rawiller at Randwick last Saturday. "I wouldn't

have been ready to ride him but I was thrilled

for the connections," he added.

Goldmarket test for Grey MissileFormer country star Grey Missile (Red Element)

will have to call on his renowned toughness to

win the Goldmarket having drawn wide in a

capacity field. The five-year-old transferred

to Toby and Trent Edmonds late last year and

won at the Sunshine Coast at his first start for

the training partnership. He has had one run

since, when he was stuck three-deep before

being beaten a nose in an Open Handicap at

Doomben. Trent Edmonds said it had been

a tough run at Eagle Farm and Grey Missile

was entitled to drop out. "He was super. I was

genuinely upset because he was so tough,"

Edmonds said. "He will have to be tough again

but he is at his best trip. Grey Missile has won

ten races and five of them have been at 1300

metres. Here's hoping for a bit of luck."

RV could hold closed race meetingsRacing Victoria (RV) will keep a close eye on

the state's coronavirus situation after the World

Health Organisation officially declared it a

pandemic on Thursday. Although there are no

plans at present to abandon race meetings or

stage them without any spectators, the latter is

an option for RV. "We are keeping abreast of the

changes and the current advice that is coming

from federal and state governments and health

authorities. They're the key driver of this, they're

the key people with all the relevant information

and we'll respond to that," RV chief executive

Giles Thompson told RSN927. “At the moment,

the advice is that it is OK for mass gatherings

such as the ones we'll have this weekend and

we're going ahead fully expecting them to be

well attended. If that advice changes, then

we will change how we race. My view at this

point, and what we're planning for, is that if it

gets to the point where mass gatherings are not

allowed then we will continue to race behind

closed doors without audiences."

Warrnambool with no fans possibleWarrnambool Racing Club will host its

three-day May Racing Carnival crowd-free if

forced to, chief executive Tom O'Connor said

yesterday. "A lot of planning is going on for

the May Carnival, it's still happening, but the

concern is there," O'Connor told Racing.com.

"We've got to be very mindful of it and we're

in regular communication with the industry

and making sure they're monitoring it. At

the end of the day we'll be governed by our

federal and state governments and health

authorities."

Kent calls for MRC committee to be overthrownVictorian trainer Mick Kent challenged

Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) members

to overthrow the Club’s committee in a fiery

interview on RSN927 yesterday morning. This

came after City of Great Dandenong councillor

Peter Brown told a local newspaper that

planners representing the Club had put forward

a development proposal for 7000 homes on the

site of Sandown Racecourse. The MRC quickly

denied that any decision on the future of

Sandown had been determined, but for Kent,

it was the last straw. “I hope it’s true that the

members have the last say,” Kent told RSN927.

“They should get rid of that committee and

get another committee that enjoys racing and

not put swimming pools at tracks and have a

terrible surface at Caulfield. It’s just disgraceful

that a committee could do that. It just seems a

greedy thing for the MRC to try and sell that.

They’re a racing club, that’s their job. It’s a not-

for-profit organisation and there is just no need

to sell that track.”

Nikolic internal review knocked backFormer jockey Danny Nikolic has lost his

latest bid for a riding licence in Queensland.

Nikolic sought an internal review of the

Queensland Racing Integrity Commission

refusal of his application for a licence to ride

at provincial meetings. The internal reviewer

refused the application this week and Nikolic

is now expected to lodge a further appeal at

the Queensland Civil and Administrative

Tribunal. It can take up to a year for QCAT

cases to be heard and resolved. Internal

review reasons are not published until after

the result of any QCAT decision. In January,

QRIC informed Nikolic his application had

been declined but refused to give reasons or

make any further comment. QRIC's licensing

division had collected submissions on

the application, which if successful would

have allowed Nikolic to be based in North

Queensland. Nikolic has not ridden since

September, 2012.

Jockey Payne injuredCountry jockey Paul Payne was taken to

hospital yesterday after a trackwork fall at

Kempsey racecourse on the NSW mid-north

coast. Payne was taken to Kempsey Hospital

complaining of back pain where he was found

to have suffered a spasm around his shoulder

blade. He has been cleared of any injuries but

he has already forfeited his rides for Taree’s race

meeting today.

Three-pronged Oaks tilt for AutridgeTrainer Stephen Autridge will be vying for

when he sends out three fillies in the feature

Communique (Redwood) and Karalino

(Zacinto) in Kevin and Jo Hickman’s colours,

which are yet to salute in the Oaks but were

successful aboard a filly in the New Zealand

Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) when Silent Achiever

(O’Reilly) carried the gold silks against

the boys. He will also contest the race with

Nothing Compares (Jakkalberry), who is part-

owned by respected Horowhenua horseman

Chris Rutten. “Communique and Karalino

have gone the right way and have ended

up with good draws, so I am quite happy,”

Autridge said. “I know 2400m won’t be a

problem for Communique, but with Karalino

I am not quite sure. But her work has been

absolutely super, so we have got to have a go.”

Jennifer Eccles could tie up filly of year titleA win in

tomorrow’s New

Zealand Oaks (Gr 1,

2400m) could see Jennifer Eccles (Rip Van

Winkle) stamp herself as the most dominant

three-year-old filly in 15 years, wrapping up

the NZB Filly of the Year title in the process.

The points-based system has been in place

for almost half a century. Wins in the Eight

Carat Classic (Gr 2, 1600m), Sir Tristram

Fillies' Classic (Gr 2, 2000m) and Lowland

Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m) have put Jennifer Eccles

firmly in the box seat to win the title, with

her only danger being the New Zealand

1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Loire

(Redoute’s Choice). For the latter to take the

title, she would need to win the Oaks with

Jennifer Eccles out of the placings. Victory to

the Shaune Ritchie-trained filly would give

her 44.5 points, making her the first filly to

exceed 40 points since Justa Tad’s (Istidaad)

score of 42 in 2004-05.

Golden Sixty heads Hong Kong Derby selected runnersA field of 14 has been announced for the

Hong Kong Derby (RL, 2000m), to be run

at Sha Tin on March 22, with Golden Sixty

(Medaglia D’Oro) the headline act on the

path to the four-year-old feature. The Francis

Lui-trained Golden Sixty will be aiming to

become just the second horse to sweep the

Four-Year-Old Classic Series in Hong Kong

- which also features the Hong Kong Classic

Mile (RL, 1600m) and the Hong Kong Classic

Cup (RL, 1800m) - with the John Moore-

prepared Rapper Dragon (Street Boss) the

only previous winner of the treble in 2017.

The race will also see the return of Brett

Prebble to Hong Kong, with the Melbourne-

based rider - who plied his trade in the city

for 15 years - set to partner Private Secretary

(Kingman) for Tony Cruz.

If recent history is any guide, then

Western Australian galloper Gatting

faces a monumental task to repeat his

Eastern seaboard debut in the Group 1

Maybe Diva (Craiglee) Stakes win in tomorrow’s

Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.

Not only does the son of Hard Spun have

to defy the usually huge odds against longshot

winners repeating, he’d become just the third

horse in 30 years to complete the double; 25

have tried and only Weekend Hussler (2008)

and Northerly (2002) have been successful.

Furthermore, none the past ten Craiglee

Stakes winners has managed to win another race

during the spring which is verily dumbfounding

and must cast some doubt over its Group 1 status

in a Melbourne carnival which, ridiculously, has

six Group 1 races from 1600 metres to 2040 metres

in about as many weeks.

In contrast, the Group 2 Feehan Stakes

— won this year by Homesman — has been a

much better portent of things to come through

the balance of the spring carnival.

Six of the past ten Feehan winners have

won again in the coming weeks. The exceptions

include Rekindled Interest and Whobegotyou,

who were later placed in Cox Plates, and Magic

Consol who didn’t race again that year.

Four of the past five Underwood Stakes

winners have come via the Feehan including,

of course, Homesman who won last year after

finishing second in the Moonee Valley race and

he looks a superior horse in 2019.

Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman won

the 2017 Underwood with four-year-old mare

Bonneval [who’d won the Feehan] and they

saddle another four-year-old, this time male,

in The Chosen One — who looks the principal

danger to Homesman.

The follow-up form of major race winners

is something of a fascination and generally less

impressive than you might think. Examining

the two major races at Caulfield last Saturday is

interesting.

Begood Toya Mother was a fast and

spectacular winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes

albeit with a “fired up” Iconoclasm providing

him with some unexpected cover.

Begood Toya Mother is now expected to be

spelled. Moment Of Change, a low weighted

Rupert Clarke winner like Begood Toya Mother,

is the only victor in recent memory [certainly in

the past ten years] to have had an immediate

break and he returned to run second to Black

Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and then

went on to win a brace of Group 1 races.

Trust In A Gust and Stratum Star are the

only Rupert Clarke winners, in the past ten

years, to score again that spring - taking the

Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 3 Coongy

Handicap respectively.

Similarly, last weekend’s Group 3

Naturalism Stakes has produced just two

subsequent springtime winners in the past

decade; Jameka who went on to win the Group

1 Caulfield Cup and December Draw who won

the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before failing in

the Caulfield Cup.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off

a remarkable training feat by

managing to rejuvenate the

once retired Black Heart Bart

(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and

second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three

years on from his first victory in the Caulfield

feature.

Western Australian Smith took over the

Warrnambool stables once owned by Black

Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir

and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt

to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.

Smith conceded that he was not overly

confident that Black Heart Bart would make

it back to the races until an encouraging

Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.

"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but

then he trialled well," Smith said.

"His first race was good and then his second

run was plain, but we thought getting him up to

the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't

be chasing all the time.

"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING

Dunn gets job doneon RenewalWayne Hawkes believes the key to Renewal’s

Listed win was Dwayne Dunn not panicking

despite being last and a long way off the leader

Zoustyle. "He had a terrible run in transit but

the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"

Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little

bit and he hit the line well." Zoustyle’s trainer

Tony Gollan was ruing the fact that his smart

sprinter missed the stakes win by such a narrow

margin. "It's a big learning curve for him. It's his

first trip away and this was his first time racing

the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I

think it's important if I can just keep him in his

right grade I can keep him progressing along.

We won't aim too high I don't think at this

stage. And I think if we come back this time

next year we're going to have a bona fide Group

1 horse." Morning Briefing page 12 >>

Black Heart Bart ($101) held off last

year's winner, the $2.50 favourite Homesman (War Front), to win by a

short neck.

Fellow Warrnambool-trained veteran Gailo Chop (Deporvito) ($26)

was one and a half lengths away in third.

The Blackfriars (Danehill) gelding ran eighth first-up in the Memsie

Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind his new stablemate Scales Of Justice (Not A

Single Doubt), before running 11th in last week’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

(Gr 1, 1400m) behind Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie).

"Even though those two runs might have looked a bit plain, he was

warming up and I've been happy with him," jockey Brad Rawiller said.

"Today, the whole way through the run I was thinking 'geez, we're

going to be in this'."

It was Black Heart Bart’s first win since the 2017 Futurity Stakes (Gr

1, 1400m). He was retired by Weir and his owners almost 12 months ago

after finishing well back in last year’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m).

An emotional Rawiller, the long-time rider of Black Heart Bart, was

delighted to see the gelding return to Group 1 winning form.

It also capped Rawiller’s own comeback from a broken neck which

almost ended his career, having been kept on the sidelines for nearly six

months after being seriously injured last October.

"I've won a Golden Slipper and a Caulfield Cup and I never looked like

getting teary, and I'm nearly in tears," he said.

"It's just amazing. I can't put it into words. Since coming back from my

broken neck it's been a long road.

"At the end of the day I haven't had much to look forward to as far as

rides for the spring and Black Heart Bart was always just my sole focus.

"I've been really happy with how he has been coming along.

"Last week after the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes when I was asked about

him, I said 'he lit the fire today'. But you've still got to see it.

"I'm still overwhelmed myself, to be honest, even though I thought he

could win today."

Nature Strip (Nicconi) staked his

claim for a potential shot at The

Everest (1200m) when silencing

his doubters with an impressive

victory in the AJ Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at

The Valley last night.

The Chris Waller-trained gelding

harboured plenty of criticism after his last

start in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m)

when he failed to settle on the front end.

However, he showed he is a bona fide Group

Everest-bound filly Sunlight (Zoustar)

closed strongly late to finish the same distance away in third with Ian

McEwen Stakes winner Faatinah (Nicconi) another short-head further

back in fourth.

Waller admitted after the race that the horse gets a lot of negative

attention, but this win might put a stop to the bad press.

"He's a popular horse," Waller joked. "We seem to get more criticism

with him than we ever got with

another certain horse [Winx]

who was probably our last Group

1 winner here.

"That's racing, everyone has

got their opinions. He's a good

horse and today he stepped away

well. James didn't panic he just

got there gradually and it was a

good race.

"You think punters get

frustrated, well owning a horse

and training a horse when you're

running in these types of races,

it's a bitter pill to take when you

don't quite get it right.

"So I think it's a good reward to everybody and I hope the punters had

something on as well and got a bit back from last start when apparently I

did everything wrong."

Waller hopes Nature Strip secures a spot in the $14 million Everest at

Randwick on October 19 and the gelding will now head to the Schillaci

Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on October 12 - the winner of that race

will represent the Melbourne Racing Club in the $14 million sprint a week

later.

"I don't think 1200 metres is a problem," Waller said. "I'd say we'll just

see what unfolds in the next few days. If he doesn't get an invite for The

Everest I guess the Schillaci Stakes is the logical choice."

Meanwhile, trainer Shaun Dwyer said Miss Leonidas ran a great race

while Sunlight's co-trainer Tony McEvoy could not hide his delight over

the mare's performance.

McEvoy said he would run Sunlight the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington,

two weeks before The Everest at Randwick.

"I'm pumped," McEvoy said. "I feel like I've won the race.

"The risk was the 1000 meters tonight and that's all that cost her the

race."

Passed in for $90,000 (reserve $120,000) at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne

Premier Yearling Sale, Nature Strip (5 g Nicconi - Strikeline by Desert Sun)

took his record to 11 wins and two placings from 18 starts for prize-money

of $1,879,285.

Kentucky Derby winner War Emblem diesWar Emblem (Our Emblem), the 2002 Kentucky

Derby (Gr 1, 10f) and Preakness Stakes (Gr 1,

9.5f) winner, has died in Kentucky aged 21. He

had been at Old Friends Farm, a thoroughbred

retirement centre in Lexington, since 2015

after returning from stud in Japan. Officials say

the cause of death is believed to be a paddock

accident, but exact details are not known

and a necropsy is pending. War Emblem was

transferred to trainer Bob Baffert after he

won the Illinois Derby (Gr 2, 9f); three weeks

later, he won the Kentucky Derby and then

the Preakness to set up a Triple Crown bid.

He stumbled badly at the start of the Belmont

Stakes (Gr 1, 12f) and ended up losing to

outsider Sarava (Wild Again), who also lives at

Old Friends. War Emblem retired with seven

wins from 13 career starts and was sold for

USD$17 million to Shadai Stallion Farm in

Japan where he proved a difficult but talented

stallion, siring fewer than 200 foals at stud.

Big Blue to become first Australian-trained Cheltenham runnerTrainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace

will create a little slice of history at the world’s

biggest jumps meeting, the Cheltenham

Festival, today when they send out the

first ever Australian-trained runner at the

meeting. Big Blue (Galileo) began his career

with Godolphin, initially starting with Andre

Fabre in France before arriving in Australia

in 2017. Joining Maher and Eustace in 2018,

he has been a dual-purpose campaigner,

winning three of his four starts over hurdles

down under - including the 2019 Galleywood

Hurdle (3200m) - as well as taking the second

running of the reintroduced ATC St Leger

(2600m). He has struggled in two runs back

in Europe, being pulled up in the Christmas

Hurdle (Gr 1, 2m) at Kempton before a

lacklustre sixth of seven in the Limestone

Lad Hurdle (Gr 3, 2m) at Naas last start. Big

Blue will contest the Martin Pipe Conditional

Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle (2m 4 1/2f ),

the final race of the four-day Cheltenham

Festival, with teenage rider Luca Morgan to

be legged aboard.

Share in Le Havre fetches mammoth price in online saleThe 1/50th share in leading French sire Le

Havre (Noverre) offered online by Arqana on

Wednesday went the way of a winning bid to the

tune of €300,000. Having started at 11am, the

sale generated a total of ten bids between five

different bidders. Montfort et Préaux, acting

as agent for an as-yet unknown client, had the

final say at 6.17pm following 'extra-time'. At a

very simple arithmetic level, a 1/50th share in

a stallion that goes for €300,000 values him at

€15 million. Standing at Montfort et Préaux,

Le Havre has supplied 57 stakes performers

since retiring to stud, including dual Classic

winners La Cressonniere and Avenir Certain.

The 14-year-old is standing at a fee of €50,000

this year, having stood his first season at stud in

2010 for €5,000.

Irish racing in the balance as government reveals coronavirus measures

Horseracing in Ireland looks set to be held

under special measures or possibly cancelled

in response to the coronavirus outbreak, it was

announced yesterday. Irish prime minister

Leo Varadkar revealed measures to combat

coronavirus, which will take place from 6pm

on Thursday to March 29, that will see schools,

colleges and other public facilities close in

Ireland.

He said indoor gatherings of more than 100

people and outdoor gatherings of more

than 500 people should be cancelled, while

people are being encouraged to work from

home where possible. Horse Racing Ireland

was scheduled to meet yesterday to discuss

the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on

racing. Officials at Down Royal racecourse

yesterday announced their intention to run

the St Patrick's Day race meeting, scheduled

for Tuesday, behind closed doors. Emma

Meehan, chief executive of Down Royal

racecourse said: “We apologise for any

inconvenience caused; however the health

and safety of racegoers is our priority.

Only runners, riders and trainers will be

in attendance, with turnstiles closed to

racegoers. Ticketholders will automatically

receive a full refund within 14 working days.”

Love Conquers All (Mossman)

will return to Queensland for

the upcoming breeding season,

relocating from Sun Stud in Victoria

to Clear Mountain Fairview on the Darling

Downs in a coup for the sunshine state’s

breeding industry.

When first retired to stud in 2012, Love

Conquers All was based in Queensland,

standing at Eliza Park’s property at Innisplain

before it was rebranded as Sun Stud. He moved

to Sun Stud’s Victoria farm in 2018.

During his first stint in Queensland, he

was named champion Australian first season

sire (by winners), as well as the champion

Queensland sire for his first, second and third

season crops.

“This is a serious horse that has a proven

breeding record,” Clear Mountain Fairview Stud

principal Bob Frappell said. “Love Conquers All

is a Queenslander through and through and it is

great to have him return to the sunshine state.

He will be instantly recognised and a great

choice for mare owners for the 2020 breeding

season. We look forward to Love Conquers All

arriving at the farm and cannot wait to start

covering in the coming season.”

Love Conquers All is a Queensland product,

having been bred by Glenlogan Park. He was

sold for $400,000 at the 2008 Magic Millions

Gold Coast Yearling Sale to John Hawkes on

behalf of prominent owner Nick Moraitis, with

the bay going on to win $1.38 million, including

five stakes victories among his haul of eight

wins. He was three times a runner-up in Group

1 company.

Sun Stud’s managing director Danielle

Cheng said the deal to relocate Love Conquers

All is beneficial to all stakeholders.

“We are very pleased with the outcome,”

Cheng said. “We have been able to negotiate

with all parties involved and can confirm a

reduced service fee for 2020 that will ensure

Queensland breeders can afford to support this

wonderful sire.

“It should be noted that Love Conquers All

has 64 winners and 100 wins this season. The

only Queensland-based sire with more winners

is Spirit Of Boom (66 winners and 82 wins), and

no stallion in the state has more progeny wins

to their name than Love Conquers All in 2019-

20.”

He will stand for $5,500 (including GST),

having been priced at $8,800 (including GST) at

his last two seasons in Victoria.

Blueblood Safe Passage (Snitzel) is

potentially on a Group 1 path as

soon as the end of the month after

she scored an emphatic win at her

debut outing at Matamata for trainers Murray

Baker and Andrew Forsman.

Racing in the colours of James Chapman’s

Jamieson Park, Safe Passage showed good

early gate speed to sit outside the leader, her

stablemate Oneroa (Shooting To Win). Shaken

up upon straightening, she quickly put a margin

on her rivals, holding almost four lengths at the

line; the Emma-Lee and David Browne-trained

Autobahn (Charm Spirit) closed off strongly

late to grab second.

Baker suggested that the Manawatu Sires’

Produce Stakes (Gr

1, 1400m) at Awapuni

on 28 March could be

the filly’s next target

after that dominant

debut.

“It was a

good win. She is

a promising filly,”

Baker said. “She is

nominated for the

Manawatu Sires’ so

we will see how she

comes through this

and assess where we

go next.”

By Australia’s

three-time champion sire Snitzel (Redoute’s

Choice), Safe Passage is out of the unraced Deep

Impact (Sunday Silence) mare Travessia, who

is herself a half-sister to Japanese champion

stallion King Kamehameha (Kingmambo)

and Santa Anita Derby (Gr 1, 9f) winner The

Deputy (Petardia). With both Deep Impact and

King Kamehameha prevalent in her pedigree,

Travessia is one of Japan’s hottest broodmare

prospects. Both of Safe Passage’s third and

fourth dams, Pilot Bird (Blakeney) and The

Dancer (Green Dancer), won the Listed Sir

Charles Clore Memorial Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f),

now the Newbury Fillies’ Trial Stakes, while

others in the family include 2010 UAE Derby

(Gr 2, 1900m) winner Musir (Redoute’s Choice).

Safe Passage, who was knocked down

for $380,000 to Bruce Perry Bloodstock and

Jamieson Park at last year’s Inglis Australian

Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney, is the second of

Travessia’s foals to race. The first, Admire Form

(Kurofune), was unplaced on the flat but has

won two steeplechases at Fukushima.

She was bred by the Arrowfield Group and

Jungle Pocket combination that has seen the

mixing of high-class Australian and Japanese

bloodlines. Some of their notable stars have

included this season’s Blue Diamond Stakes

(Gr 1, 1200m) winner Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa),

2018 Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)

heroine Estijaab (Snitzel) and dual Group 2

winner Showtime (Snitzel).

Safe Passage’s brother will be offered as

Lot 250 at next month’s Inglis Australian Easter

Yearling Sale. Travessia slipped to both Snitzel

and Not A Single Doubt last season, while she

visited new kid on the block The Autumn Sun

in 2019.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian

Bott-trained colt Farnan (Not A

Single Doubt) now heads to the

Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)

tomorrow week as favourite after returning fast

times in his brilliant win in Saturday’s Todman

Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick.

Now the winner of four of his five starts,

Farnan came firmly into contention for next

week’s $3.5 million feature after his win in the

Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) a fortnight

earlier at Rosehill, with the colt advancing to an

even higher level on Saturday.

Starting a well-supported $1.80 favourite,

Farnan was quickly away and soon took the

lead but was then pressured on occasions

before drawing clear shortly after turning into

the straight.

From that point on he was not threatened,

winning comfortably by a length and three-

quarters from the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1,

1200m) winner Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa) in the

slick time of 1:09.86 on the Soft 7 track.

Farnan’s 200-metre sectional breakdown was

impressive (from the 1000m): 10.96, 11.09 (400m

in 22.05), 10.64 (600m in 32.69), 11.05 (800m in

43.74) and 12.04 for his final 200 metres, giving the

colt a fast 55.78 for his last 1000 metres - especially

smart on the affected track.

The TAB now has Farnan as their $5

favourite for the Golden Slipper, with Tagaloa

at $6, Hanseatic (Street Boss) $7 and Saturday’s

impressive Flemington winner Minhaaj

(Exceed And Excel) next at $9.00.

Later on the Randwick programme, the

high-class sprinter Nature Strip (Nicconi)

returned to peak form at his second run back

from a spell when taking out the weight-for-

age Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m), returning

outstanding sectionals in the process.

Nature Strip needed to work along the rails

from his inside barrier to find the lead and he

then travelled well at a quick tempo, clocking

(from the 800m): 10.00, 10.25 (400m in 20.25),

11.00 (600m in a brilliant 31.25) and 12.19 to

give him a very fast 43.44 for his last 800 metres.

The time for the 1000m journey, 56.87,

was very quick on a Soft 6 track, but was still

1.14 seconds outside the track record of Redzel

(Snitzel), who finished three lengths back as

runner-up on Saturday.

Another to impress on the watch, while

not in the same league as Nature Strip, was the

Gerald Ryan-trained filly Villami (Foxwedge),

who demonstrated her talent with an

impressive first-up win in the Fireball Stakes

(Listed, 1100m).

Having only her eighth start and her first

since October, Villami was quickly away from

her outside barrier (seven), went straight to

the front after traveling nicely at a solid tempo,

and then dashed clear at the 300 metres before

going on to score quite comfortably by a length

and a quarter.

The time for the 1100 metres was a fast

1:02.26 (11.32 200m rate), equivalent to 1:07.92

for 1200 metres, extremely good times on a

track rated as Soft 7.

In fact, Villami’s time was only 0.59 seconds

outside the track record.

Her 200-metre breakdown was very smart

being (from the 1000m): 10.53, 10.71 (400m in

21.24), 10.53 (600m in 31.77) 10.84 (800m in

42.61) and 11.98 for her final 200 metres to give

Villami an impressive 54.59 for her last 1000

metres.

Especially noteworthy was Villami

recording four successive 200-metre sections

of sub-11 seconds, which is rarely achieved,

resulting in her clocking a brilliant 42.61 for that

800-metre mid-race section.

The runner-up was the Peter and Paul

Snowden-trained colt Cosmic Force (Deep

Field) and his performance was extremely

good.

Having his first start since early November

and conceding five kilograms to the winner,

Cosmic Force settled back in fourth place and

kept making ground under his top weight (59

kilograms) to finish second, beaten a length

and a quarter.

Cosmic Force was timed to run his last

1000 metres in 54.61, last 800 metres in 43.81,

last 600 metres in 33.09 with his final 400 metres

in 22.53.

A winner of three with a further four

placings from nine starts, Cosmic Force showed

his talent with a seven and a quarter length

victory in last year’s Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3,

1200m), prior to racing below his best when

finishing eighth as favourite for the Golden

Slipper a week later.

Saturday’s Flemington meeting featured

the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) and, in

a high-class renewal of the famous sprint, the

Godolphin-raced colt Bivouac (Exceed And

Excel) staged an outstanding performance in

victory.

Always close to the pace, Glen Boss dashed

the colt clear on passing the 200 metres before

Bivouac went on to easily defeat the classy filly

Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible) by two and a half

lengths in a time of 1:09.21 on the Soft 5 track.

Bivouac’s closing sectionals were very smart,

with his last 1000 metres in 55.03, last 800 metres

in 44.44, last 600 metres in 33.76, last 400 metres

in 23.00 and his final 200 metres in 11.76.

Meanwhile, in the opening event at

Flemington, the aforementioned Minhaaj, leapt

to the fourth line of betting for Saturday week’s

Golden Slipper after her highly impressive

victory in the Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes

(Gr 3, 1200m) for two-year-old fillies.

The Lindsay Park-trained and Shadwell-

raced filly, who was advancing in class after her

easy win on debut in a two-year-old maiden

(1000m) at Bendigo on February 15, raced close

to the speed before moving away to an easy four

and a half length victory.

The win looked very good to the eye, and

also on the clock, with Minhaaj’s 200-metre

breakdown being (from the 1000m): 10.39,

11.02 (400m in 21.41), 10.88 (600m in 32.29),

11.63 (800m in 11.63) and 12.41 to give her a

quick last 1000 metre time of 56.33 on the Soft

6 track.
