Former Australian Horse of the Year Lankan Rupee (Redoute’s Choice), a winner of five Group One races, is expected to venture into uncharted

stablemate Duke Of Brunswick (Magnus) in the $150,000 race, is on the comeback trail from injury, with Price keen to target the $1,000,000 Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) with the gelding.

Price said Lankan Rupee and Duke Of Brunswick had worked well at Caulfield early yesterday, with the Group One winner having his consistent stablemate’s measure in the gallop.

“Lankan Rupee is getting a lot more muscle on him now and getting to the point where he is tuned up and he worked on the course proper this morning with Duke Of Brunswick and he had him covered, as he would as one has won $4,000,000 and the other has won $400,000,” Price told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“He will run in the Bletchingly first up and then I think it is time that we go to the P B Lawrence Stakes on 19 August and then into the $1,000,000 Memsie.

“I have never asked him to get over (further) because the races we wanted to win were the T J Smith Stakes and the Manikato, which were races that suited him, but I feel good about asking him to go 1400 metres.”

Price said Lankan Rupee had undergone hock surgery, which kept him sidelined for the autumn, but has been given a steady build up for his return in the Bletchingly Stakes.

“His action and his attitude seem good and, being a rising eight-year-old, we just have to race him into a bit of fitness,” he said.

“He has had a long, slow, happy and safe four-month build up. He had an operation on a hock and had that cleaned up, so we have given him the time we needed to give him.

“He has never had a chip in a joint, or anything like that, and has never had any major surgery apart from the (hock).”

Craig Newitt will partner Lankan Rupee in the Bletchingly Stakes, which received 18 nominations ahead of acceptances being taken today.

Rivals include Sir John Monash Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) winner Supido (Sebring), in-form sprinter Ability (Reward For Effort), Keen Array (Bel Esprit), three-year-old Savanna Amour (Love Conquers All) and former Perth four-year-old Chocolate Holic (Blackfriars).

Price admitted yesterday that Duke Of Brunswick, who was runner up to Ability first up in the All Victorian Sprint Series Final (Listed, 1200m) on 8 July at Flemington, would find the rise in grade tough in the Bletchingly Stakes.

“I am very happy with him, but I do think he will need to run a career best to beat those horses,” he said.

“He always earns prize money, he is a great horse to own and the owners bred him, and they love him. We like him in the stable and he will be doing his best, as usual, but he will need to find something great to win.”

Meanwhile, Adelaide-based co-trainer Leon Macdonald admits his veteran sprinter Daytona Grey (Artie Schiller) faces a tough task in the Bletchingly Stakes.

The rising eight-year-old gelding was having his second start back from ten months away from the races when second to Supido in the Sir John Monash Stakes when ridden by Clare Lindop.

Lindop will again ride Daytona Grey at Caulfield on Saturday.

"I thought he ran his heart out and was just beaten by a better horse on the day," said Macdonald of Daytona Grey’s last start second placing.

"He's pulled up well and he's gone forward since. So we'll keep our fingers crossed.

"He would have to improve to beat the horse that beat him, I know, but the chance of maybe a wet track might help us. He loves give in the ground.

"It's probably a tougher race. We'd probably want a good draw and a good run to give him a chance."

Ten For All Too HardWell-bred All Too Hard (Casino Prince) filly Za Zi Ba (2 f ex Wiener by More Than Ready), who is trained by Brad Widdup at Hawkesbury, won first up at Wyong yesterday in a 2YO Maiden Plate (1100m), providing her sire with his tenth individual Australian first crop winner. Ridden by Christian Reith, Za Zi Ba sat outside the leader before taking the lead in the straight to win by half a length over Joy For Us (Lonhro) and Lass Vegas (All American). Za Zi Ba, who had two starts in Sydney last campaign, is a daughter of Wiener (More Than Ready), herself a half-sister to successful stallions Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock). A $400,000 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale graduate, Za Zi Ba joins stakes winner Curdled, The Mighty Fed and Allied Power as winners for All Too Hard. Standing for $44,000 (inc GST) at Vinery Stud in 2017, All Too Hard is also the sire of New Zealand winner Lincoln Hills.

Inglis Ready2Race Entries Closing SoonThe deadline for entries for the Inglis Ready2Race Sale closes on Friday week, with over 100 entries already received for the auction which will be held at Oaklands Junction on 4 October. Leading sires such as I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), Fastnet Rock (Danehill), High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells), Sebring (More

Than Ready) and Written Tycoon (Iglesia) are represented, while progeny by first season sires including Zoustar (Northern Meteor), Epaulette (Commands), Sizzling (Snitzel), Shamus Award (Snitzel) and Camelot (Montjeu) are also entered. Two breeze-up sessions will be held at Cranbourne ahead of the sale, on 4 September and 2 October, while breeze-ups will also be held at Canterbury on 8 September. Alexander Secures Williams For Plus Effronte Trainer Archie Alexander has booked Melbourne jockeys’ premiership leader Craig Williams to partner Plus Effronte (Street Boss) at Sandown Hillside today. The in-form mare was a comfortable winner at Donald at her last start, and Alexander said it was a boost to have Williams in the saddle as she lines up in today’s Benchmark 64 (1400m). "He was the one who was actually pretty keen to get on her for this race," Alexander said. "That's a massive help. Every jockey is always trying in every race but you know there will be extra fire in his belly.” Williams currently leads Beau Mertens with 74 winners to 72 in the metropolitan jockeys standings. and Volante (Snitzel) will have to overcome wide barriers to continue their good run of form at Canterbury today. Both horses have performed consistently this preparation but have been drawn in barriers 13 and 14 respectively in today’s Benchmark 67 (1100m). "(Erins Zar) is in a purple patch of form. He's gone from winning races at Wagga to just getting beaten in town," Pepper said. "He'll drift back from 13 and hopefully be ridden for a bit of luck. (Volante) is probably the unluckiest horse in New South Wales lately. She is one of those mares that seems to run into trouble in the running." Click here to view the Canterbury acceptances.

Chauffeur Could Resume In San DomenicoRising three-year-old colt Chauffeur (Snitzel) is expected to have his first barrier trial next week ahead of a likely first up run in the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill on 26 August. The former Gerald Ryan-trained colt, who is being considered for The Everest (1200m) on 14 October, will be aiming to give trainers Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes back-to-back San Domenico Stakes victories after now retired colt Star Turn (Star Witness) won the race last year. A debut winner last December, Chauffeur ran second to Houtzen (I Am Invincible) in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) before three unplaced runs during the Sydney autumn carnival.

Fanatic On Cups TrailNew Zealand mare Fanatic (Shocking) has settled into her new home in Victoria where she is being prepared for a Cups campaign by Lindsay Park. Her owner-breeder Sean Kiernan said Fanatic, who won the 2016 New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m), was getting close to a barrier trial with senior trainer David Hayes to decide her program. "She's had a couple of gallops and David is very happy with her," Kiernan said. "She'll be having a trial in the next ten days and then we'll see. I'm leaving it entirely up to David."

Toorak Aim For Scales Of JusticeWestern Australian Group One winner Scales Of Justice (Not A Single Doubt) is set to campaign at the Melbourne Spring Carnival, with the Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) a possible target. The Lindsey Smith-trained rising five-year-old, who won the WATC Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Ascot last November, won two of his three winter starts in Perth and has been freshened up for a Melbourne preparation.

Smith intends to run Scales Of Justice in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on 1 October and the Toorak Handicap at the same track on 14 October.

Cameron Option For Sound PropositionFormer New Zealand five-year-old Sound Proposition (Savabeel), who has won his two starts since joining the Kris Lees stable at Newcastle, is being aimed at the Cameron Handicap (Gr 3, 1350m) on his new home track. Formerly trained by Andrew Scott and Lance O’Sullivan in New Zealand, the gelding had his last start for the pair when unplaced in the Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) on 20 May. Since then he has won twice for Lees at Randwick. “We might have a shot at the Cameron Handicap in September,” Lees said.

Capital Gain Stays In PaddockBrisbane trainer Paul Butterworth has confirmed J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Capital Gain (Ad Valorem) will miss the spring and instead enjoy

an extended spell. The rising three-year-old gelding won twice from eight starts as a juvenile including landing Butterworth’s maiden Group One victory, with the trainer resisting temptations to set the horse for the spring carnivals in Sydney and Melbourne. Butterworth said Capital Gain could make an appearance during the Brisbane summer before being aimed at the Sydney autumn carnival.

Lindsay Saddles First WinnerCaulfield-based trainer Matt Lindsay saddled a winner with his first ever runner yesterday when Magnesium Rose (Magnus) made a successful debut at Bairnsdale. The two-year-old filly beat Crystal Spirit (Bel Esprit) by a length and a half under Noel Callow to get Lindsay off to the perfect start. “It is quite a thrill to see her win like that today, I've been around stables for the best part of 15 years but to have a winner in my own name is pretty special," Lindsay told Racing.com. "It is a fair drive down to Bairnsdale and you start to question yourself and possibly over think things but I'm glad it is all done now and we can enjoy the win."

Shinn Appeals SuspensionSydney-based jockey Blake Shinn is to appeal a careless riding penalty which will keep him out of the first stakes meeting of the new season. Shinn was outed for his ride on Invincible Knight (I Am Invincible) at Randwick on Saturday and pending the outcome of his appeal on Friday, he will not return until 6 August, the day after the Missile Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) meeting at Randwick. The jockey returned last week from a successful five-week stint in America where he rode 11 winners at Chicago's Arlington Park.

Bayliss Returns At EchucaJockey Regan Bayliss will return to race riding at Echuca tomorrow after breaking a wrist in a fall at Geelong in May. The former leading apprentice suffered the injury on 19 May, forcing him out of the saddle for ten weeks. Bayliss said he had been riding track work for two weeks at Flemington and Lindsay Park at Euroa and was pleased to be back in the saddle. "It's been a long time coming and I'm really looking forward to Thursday,” Bayliss told Racing.com. "I can't wait for the next few months ahead, we've got a great team of horses and I'm looking forward to just working as hard as I can. Hopefully I'm riding in good form coming into the spring and you never know what lies ahead."

Griffin SidelinedGold Coast-based jockey Dan Griffin is expected to be sidelined for at least six months after undergoing shoulder surgery yesterday. Griffin, who will win his eighth Gold Coast jockeys premiership at the end of this season, had surgery to repair a damaged rotator cuff. The leading Gold Coast jockey had spent extended time out of the saddle due to a knee

injury and expects to be sidelined for at least six months with his latest injury.

Lye Inquiry ReconvenedRacing NSW stewards were yesterday forced to reconvene an inquiry in relation to a charge of improper conduct against former jockey Natalie Lye after she failed to appear at the hearing. Lye is alleged to have been involved in an altercation with another jockey at Hawkesbury in July last year, and her initial hearing on 20 June was adjourned to allow her to seek legal advice. The inquiry has been rescheduled for 31 July, and stewards have advised that the hearing will be conducted in Lye’s absence if she fails to appear again.

Hall Of Fame Due Back In StableGroup One-winning colt Hall of Fame (Savabeel) will shortly return to the Matamata stable of Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards ahead of the new season. The rising four-year-old won the Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) in January and has been off the track since finishing fifth in the Queensland Day Stakes (Listed, 1350m) at Doomben in May. “He looks good and strong and he’s furnished into a lovely horse. He’ll be getting set for Group One races,” Autridge said. “He has a ton of ability and has done well for a break. Around Christmas and New Year, we would like to see him getting into the best races with the right weights.”

Cha Siu Bao GeldedGroup One performer Cha Siu Bao (Smart Missile) has been gelded ahead of the new

campaign. The rising four-year-old ran fourth to Ugo Foscolo (Zacinto) in the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in November but failed to beat a rival home in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at his last start. “He was gelded after the Derby and we gave him a three-month spell,” said Lance O’Sullivan, who trains the horse in partnership with Andrew Scott. “He’s back and done a few weeks’ work. He looks great, he’s a completely different horse.”

Rasa Lila RetiredClassy mare Rasa Lila (Darci Brahma) has been retired from racing and will commence a broodmare career this spring. The rising seven-year-old won the Travis Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) last season and twice finished placed at Group One level. “She was such a good horse and it’s a real shame she didn’t win a Group One – she was definitely good enough to,” said Julia Ritchie, who trained the Sir Peter Vela-owned mare with Steven Ramsay. “She’s a beautiful mare, a really neat horse and retired 100 percent sound. We hope she leaves some lovely babies.”

All Roads To Join WallerRising six-year-old All Roads (Road To Rock) will be transferred to the Sydney stable of Chris Waller next month. The gelding ended his last preparation in good form, winning the Japan New Zealand International Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) on his penultimate start at Tauranga in March, and former trainer Donna Logan confirmed he will head across the Tasman for a spring campaign. “He’s going to go over to Chris Waller in mid-August,” Logan said. “He’s in work with Tony Cole and they think it’s worth having a tilt in Sydney.”

Hong Kong Rating Review ConductedThe Hong Kong Jockey Club handicappers have conducted a rating review following the conclusion of the 2016-17 season, with Group One winner Giant Treasure (Mizzen Mast) the most high-profile horse to have his rating dropped. The Tony Cruz-trained six-year-old won the Steward’s Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) last season but failed to reach that level last campaign, most recently running sixth in the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup (Gr 1, 1400m) in February, and his rating has been dropped to 117 as a result. A total of 1,122 horses were evaluated with 47.5 per cent having their marks reduced, meaning there are now just 16 horses in Hong Kong rated 116 or higher, down from 22 last year. Cracksman Not Entered For St LegerDual Group One-placegetter Cracksman (Frankel) has not been entered for the St Leger

Stakes (Gr 1, 1m6.5f), the final Classic of the British season, trainer John Gosden has confirmed. The three-year-old colt finished placed in both the Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) and the Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) but will not bid to land the historic race at Doncaster in September. However, Gosden, who has won the St Leger four times, has entered five runners in the race. “We have entered five in the St Leger but Cracksman is not one of them,” the former champion trainer told the Racing Post. "The five are Stradivarius, Khalidi, Glencadam Glory, Zenon and the filly Coronet.”

British Racing To Receive Financial BoostThe British Horseracing Authority (BHA) estimate that around £10,000,000 extra will be reinvested into racing in 2018 following reforms to the levy system that funds the sport. The BHA have said the additional funds will be used to boost prize money, particularly at the middle to lower end of the sport, with each race to be worth a minimum of £6,000. "One of the challenges we've faced over the last few years has been that while total prize money has been rising, the bottom end of the sport hasn't been seeing very much of it and I don't think it's any coincidence that because

of that we've seen this reduction in horse and ownership numbers,” BHA chief operating officer Richard Wayman told the Racing Post. "We are aware the owner of an average horse on the Flat recovers eight pence in every pound they spend on their fees, so doing something about that was a key priority for us."

Durcan To Return From InjuryClassic-winning jockey Ted Durcan will return to race riding at Doncaster tomorrow having been out since April with an ankle injury. The rider, who guided the Sir Henry Cecil-trained Light Shift (Kingmambo) to victory in the 2007 Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f), broke his ankle in the same incident that led to jockey Freddy Tylicki being paralysed from the waist down at Kempton in October, and he suffered a recurrence of that injury when suffering a fall at Leicester earlier this season. "My specialist has spoken with the BHA and I've got the all-clear to ride at Doncaster on Thursday, where I partner the unraced two-year-old Qaroun for Sir Michael (Stoute),” Durcan told the Racing Post. "It's been an up-and-down nine months, but it will be great to be back in the weighing room and I can't wait to head up to Donny."

TRAVEL DIARY SEVEN: Steve is struggling to come up with any event, in 40 years of covering horse racing, which would rival the disappointment of Arrogate’s dismal failure in last Saturday’s San Diego Handicap.

personal email accounts with overflow effluent. But they oversee the Turf Club account.

They know about this modern stuff. They’re part of a team which organises the renowned Friday night concerts - better than anything I’ve seen at a Melbourne track. They’re free if you go to the races beforehand.

They’re not giving up at Del Mar - one of the two tracks in the States where you could say that racing still has an element of ‘cool’ (the other is Saratoga). “We know they’re coming Friday night for the party but if we can convert just a small percentage of them, then that’s a win,” says McBride.

These guys also know about the past and can regale you with many a story but they don’t live there - in the past that is. Their media accreditation process is more efficient, seamless and sophisticated than most I’ve encountered (memo Racing Victoria).

Good heavens, they work in the press room to be on hand for the media (memo racing clubs).

The Del Mar Turf Club is progressive and responsive. Horses are vet checked four times pre-race, and followed during the race not only by ambulance but also by a vet, after a number of injuries and fatalities at last year’s summer meeting (principally on the dirt track, rather than the turf).

The Club is conscious of public relations and marketing responsibilities. Information and greeting staff are excellent as you enter the track and there’s information aplenty offered at various booths for the upcoming Breeders’ Cup meeting - to be held for the first time this year at Del Mar.

They’re progressive. Accommodation, medical and dental cover is provided for the trainer’s staff. “The trainers are able to get and keep good staff this way,” McBride said. Horse transport to the races is subsidised.

The saddlecloths are colour coded from number one down in each race. The field order is the barrier draw order. All simple, sensible stuff in my book.

We could smugly argue that Australian racing is in better shape than in the States. But my impression is that they’re trying harder here.

I simply cannot recall any other race being such a ‘fizzer’ - a racing event where I simply didn’t get any bang for my buck other than the sheer delight

of being at Del Mar which proved every bit as delightful as I’d been told.

But everybody’s anticipation, for the race, was crushed virtually from the start. There would be no Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song) win by a Secretariat-like margin. There would be no tossing of hats (caps) in the air nor raucous cheering. He was never travelling like a winner; not even travelling competitively.

Regular readers will know I managed to stop the train to Machu Picchu. But ‘stopping’ Arrogate? Surely I’m not the hex as some suggested via social media. Let’s pray there’s no jinx on Winx (Street Cry).

Contrary to popular opinion, I wasn’t around to see Ajax beaten at 1/40 in the 1939 Rawson Stakes. Perhaps that was just as deflating for racegoers. Newspapers, at the time, however reported the event somewhat glibly: “The sensation of the racing season was the defeat of Ajax by Spear Chief, in the Rawson Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday. Ajax had, up till then, had a series of 18 unbroken successes.”

They weren’t given, then, to the sort of hyperbole which accompanies most race commentary, especially on social media, these days.

I did see Dandy Andy (Three Legs) upset Bonecrusher (Pag-Asa) in the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) but that was no ‘fizzer’. It was exciting. Bonecrusher ran his race but was overhauled by the stalking 125/1 chance trained by ‘old’ Jim Cerchi. Think he was branded old even when he was young, Dandy Andy’s trainer.

That race was an ‘upset’, not a ‘fizzer’. So if you can recall a similarly deflating, total non-event at the races (not a race which simply delivered an upset) then let me know at [email protected]!

Arrogate simply didn’t run his race. The lead sectionals were sound enough to allow every horse his chance. He was ‘flat’ said trainer Bob Baffert. “Laid an egg,” he said - whatever the hell that means? A couple of days on and Baffert said there was no obvious physical problem. He seemingly just had an off day. Who knows? He’s a horse.

So please, spare me all your cockamamie theories on Twitter. But that, it seems, is where Twitter’s gone - degenerated into a mire of opinion and social chit chat. And yes I’m probably not innocent enough to cast the first stone but it would be a beautiful thing if we could all confine our tweets to items of news or special interest or information or links to same.

Saturday’s race disappointed but the Del Mar experience did not and the outcome of the final race, won by Ample Sufficiency (English Channel) illustrated just how narrow the racing world has become. The four-year-old, formerly trained by Dermot Weld, ran third at Gowran Park (Ireland) last September behind none other than Pacodali (Paco Boy) who, of course, won at Flemington on Saturday.

Del Mar is splendid and splendidly located. The Turf Club’s media department is run a

by a few, old blokes including Mac McBride and Dan Smith. Wow, I think they might even be older than me.

Now, there’s a novel thought for racing administrators. Employ some people with experience. Now - Mac and co don’t have

Founded by Teo Ah Khing, the China Horse Club has become one of the most significant new international investors in bloodstock over the

past five years, spending huge sums on racing and breeding stock in the United States, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Styled as Asia’s premier lifestyle, business and thoroughbred racing club, the China Horse Club is a major player in Australia, often in partnership with leading studs, and its red and yellow racing colours are familiar to racegoers having been carried to stakes victories by Invader (Snitzel), Russian Revolution (Snitzel), First Seal (Fastnet Rock), Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) and others.

These colours were also carried to glory last Sunday at the historic Saratoga track in upstate New York by outstanding three-year-old filly Abel Tasman (Quality Road) in the Coaching Club American Oaks (Gr 1, 9f), her fourth win

at the highest level and third in succession in 2017.

Abel Tasman must now rank as the leading filly of her generation in North America as this win closely followed her striking victories in the Kentucky Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) and the Acorn Stakes (Gr 1, 8f).

Last Sunday at Saratoga she again showed her great will to win but departed from her usual racing pattern of coming from behind with a powerful late sprint. This time, while well back early, jockey Mike Smith set her alight in the middle stages to sweep around the field to challenge Elate (Medaglia d’Oro) for the lead before the pair settled down for a stirring battle in the closing stages, with Abel Tasman prevailing by a head over Elate at the line with Salty (Quality Road) another three and a quarter lengths away in third place. Race time was 1:51.74.

Abel Tasman was bred in Kentucky by

Clearsky Farms which raced her as a two-year-old for three wins in four starts, finishing the campaign last December with victory in the Starlet Stakes (Gr 1, 8f) at Los Alamitos in California.

Clearsky Farms had offered Abel Tasman at the 2015 Keeneland September Yearling Sale then bought her back for US$65,000 but following her Starlet Stakes success accepted an offer from the China Horse Club to buy into the filly.

After her first start this year when second to Unique Bella (Tapit) in the Santa Ysabel Stakes (Gr 3, 8,5f), Abel Tasman had a change of trainer, moving from Simon Callaghan to the high profile Bob Baffert. She was then runner-up in the Santa Anita Oaks (Gr 1, 8.5f) before beginning her Grade One winning streak, her earnings now totalling US$1,467,060.

Breeders in our part of the world may not be familiar with Abel Tasman’s sire Quality Road

(Elusive Quality) whose father spent six seasons at Darley’s farm in NSW, leaving champion Sepoy, Group One winner Camarilla and a number of other black type winners.

Elusive Quality (Gone West) is renowned internationally as the father of Smarty Jones, champion three-year-old colt of his generation in the United States turned sire, Breeders’ Cup Classic (Gr 1, 10f) winner and sire Raven’s Pass plus other Group/Grade One winners Elusive City (sire), Elusive Kate, Maryfield, Quality Road and Certify.

Quality Road, raced exclusively in the United States, was one of the finest performers by Elusive Quality, taking the Florida Derby (Gr 1, 9f) in track record time of 1:47.72 at three years before going on at four years to capture the Woodward Stakes (Gr 1, 9f), the Metropolitan Handicap (Gr 1, 8f) and the Donn Handicap (Gr 1, 9f) (by 12 and three quarter lengths in track record time of 1:47.49).

His oldest progeny are five-year-olds and also include Grade One winners Hootenanny, Klimt and Illuminant. A tall (16.3 hh) bay horse, Quality Road stands at a fee of US$35,000 at Lane’s End, Kentucky, and it is interesting to note he is out of a daughter of globetrotting Australian champion Strawberry Road (Whiskey Road).

Abel Tasman’s unplaced dam Vargas Girl (Deputy Minister) has also produced Sky Girl (Sky Mesa), a Grade Three winner in the United States, and three other winners from six foals to race.

Wheatly Way (Wheatly Hall), the second dam of Abel Tasman, was a Listed stakes winner in the

United States and dam of seven winners, most notable of them Bevo (Prospector’s Gamble), winner at two years of the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 6f), and Moonlight Sonata (Carson City), winner at two years of the Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) and the female line traces back to influential producer Effie B (Bull Dog).

Abel Tasman carries a 4 x 5 double of Northern Dancer (Nearctic) through sons while her sire Quality Road has a 4 x 4 double of Raise a Native (Native Dancer), also through sons.

I am not sure how a filly comes to be given the name of a male, 15th century Dutch navigator and explorer but this filly is carrying Abel Tasman’s name with great distinction.

Muraahib (2 c Reset - Sultah by Exceed And Excel)

I will be looking to run him over a mile in the spring in the Caulfield Guineas and the lead up races to the Guineas. He might stretch out over further, but you never know this early with the Derby.

Will’s Bid (2 c Fastnet Rock - Gold Anthem by Made Of Gold)

He lost his way a bit last prep and he will be back for later in the spring. He is still a colt, but he might need gelding the way he raced last prep. He is such a well-bred horse that we are hoping he can return to form this preparation.

Earth Angel (2 f Animal Kingdom - Miss Finland by Redoute’s Choice)

She is still in NSW at Arrowfield in early

| 13 | @anz_news anzbloodstocknews.com

Catchy (2 f Fastnet Rock - Cats Whisker by Fusaichi Pegasus)

She has come back and will trial at Flemington on Friday. She will be aimed

towards the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield. She is a miler and I will concentrate on Melbourne with her because she ran such a bad race in Sydney in the Slipper.

Tulip (2 f Pierro - Musidora by Rock Of Gibraltar)

She is going to be aimed at the Flight Stakes in Sydney. I think the Pierros will be better at three and with Tulip’s shape, it indicates she will improve.

Formality (2 f Fastnet Rock - Jolie’s Shinju by Jolie’s Halo)

She will keep training on and getting better as she gets older. She will be trialling at Flemington on Friday.

"We have a bunch of up and coming stars, so it is exciting. With our yearlings we haven’t done a lot with them yet and I will have a better idea of where they are at in a month or so. We are happy with the ones we bought this year. Next season might not be as good as this year, but if we get a few nice two-year-olds we will be happy."

Miss Gunpowder (4 m Pendragon - Forever Rafter by Delineator)

She will be prepped up and be ready to race in September. I don’t think she will be going to stud this season and they intend to race her on.

Vega Magic (4 g Lope De Vega - Admirable by Magic Albert)

He is pretty good and is also being aimed at The Everest. He is shaping up well. He is a lot stronger this time in and he might head towards the Regal Roller first up.

Redkirk Warrior (5 g Notnowcato - Flag by Selkirk)

He is being set for The Everest. He is just building up at the moment and we don’t need to rush with him before The Everest.

Sheidel (5 m Holy Roman Emperor - Laventour by Metal Storm)

She will be resuming in the first week of September and if she races well then she will keep on racing, but if she doesn’t she’ll go to stud. She seems pretty good this time in. After she won the Oakleigh Plate she went over the top a bit, but that was because she had raced all spring and also went to Perth and came to the end of it.

Dibayani (6 g Shamardal - Dibiya by Caerleon)

The old boy will turn up in Sydney and run wherever Winx isn’t. He doesn’t go the Victorian way (left handed), so we will stick in Sydney.

He Or She (6 h Kendel Star - Danessa by West Point)

He usually picks up a black type race every prep so we are looking at the edge of the pack with him. He could be more of a handicap and a Toorak Handicap horse.

training, but she is our Oaks filly. She will probably go through the Thousand Guineas and the Wakeful. She is at least a miler, for sure. She was a bit behind the others physically and she has done very well at Arrowfield judging by the photos I have seen. I can’t wait for her to get back into the stable.

Madeenaty (2 f Exceed And Excel - Set For Fame by Reset)

She will be trialling next week and she is a speed filly who has shown sustained speed in her races. We will keep her at sprinting trips in the spring.

Sanadaat (2 f Not A Single Doubt - It’s Fun by Real Quiet)

She is a talented filly who will be running in the early spring. She is a sprinter-miler at this stage.

Derryn (3 c Hinchinbrook - Munhro by Lonhro)

We are going to train him purely as a sprinter and we might look at the Moir Stakes with him first up. He could one for The Everest if someone wanted to (support him with a slot) if he is racing well. He races well at Randwick, so hopefully he can put his hand up.

Fuhryk (3 f Star Witness - Fuhrnatic by Langfuhr)

She might kick off in the McEwen Stakes and she is a good Group Two filly. The $5 odds in her Wodonga maiden paid for a few bills.

Harlow Gold (3 f Tavistock - Belongs In Lights by Belong To Me)

She is thriving and will head towards the Caulfield Cup. She will kick off in the last week of August. She was brought a bit unstuck

by the tearaway leader in some of her races (Lasqueti Spirit) and at a good even tempo she should have a good campaign.

Hear The Chant (3 f Nicconi - Quietzer by More Than Ready)

She is a Group sprinter who will be aimed at the mares races. She is already a Group Two winner.

Highland Beat (3 c Exceed And Excel - Highland Daughter by Kyllachy)

He will keep on going into the early spring, but he probably has to keep improving to be a factor in the better races.

Seaburge (3 c Sebring - Polska by Encosta De Lago)

I think he is in a very good prep and he might be one of our sleepers for the spring. He ran second in a Mackinnon Stakes and second in a Guineas, beaten a head and a head, so he will be heading towards the weight for age races. He will get up to 2000 metres.

Faatinah (4 g Nicconi - Alqwah by Danehill)

He will be aimed at the late spring. He will probably kick off Caulfield Cup day and head towards Flemington as he is a good straight track horse.

He’s Our Rokkii (4 g Roc De Cambes - Clerihew by Lomitas)

He is heading towards the Memsie Stakes first up and after that he will be on a Toorak path to defend the title or he could go on a weight for age path, but we will wait and see how he is going first.

OverviewGroup One winner and Classic-placed Territories will shuttle to

Darley’s Kelvinside base in New South Wales this spring. The former Andre Fabre-trained Territories, who is standing the

northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of £12,000 at Darley’s Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket, broke his maiden at the second attempt over 1200 metres at Chantilly as a two-year-old in July 2014 and rounded out his juvenile campaign with a close second in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Gr 1, 1400m) at Longchamp.

The colt took out the Prix de Fontainebleau (Gr 3, 1600m) first up as a three-year-old and went on to finish second to Gleneagles (Galileo) in the 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket at his next start.

He gained a Group One breakthrough in the Prix Jean Prat (Gr 1, 1600m) at Chantilly later that year, in the second-fastest time ever recorded in the race, and he continued to perform with credit in Group company, which included a second in the Prix Jacques Le Marois (Gr 1, 1600m) at Deauville, before he was retired after running sixth in the Prix du Pin (Gr 3, 1400m) last September.

He retired the winner of three of his 13 starts and was placed another seven times for earnings of £525,096 (approximately $860,000).

By leading sire Invincible Spirit (Green Desert), Territories (5 h ex Taranto by Machiavellian) is one of seven named foals out of the stakes-placed mare Taranto (Machiavellian), while this is also the same family as the late Group One-winning and producing sire Street Cry (Machiavellian)

and former champion colt and leading sire Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway). “Territories is by the sire of I Am Invincible and from the same female

family as Darley’s amazing servants Street Cry and Shamardal so there is no doubt he has the credentials to be a success at stud. He is exactly what our market will love,” Alastair Pulford, head of sales for Darley stallions in Australia.

Territories will stand his first season in Australia for an introductory fee of $22,000 (inc GST).
