Arrowfield Stud has made the
stunning decision to withdraw
its entire draft from the Inglis
Australian Easter Yearling Sale
and instead will sell their stellar crop of horses
by private treaty in response to the auction
being forced to go solely online.
The dramatic turn of events yesterday,
just 24 hours after Inglis told vendors it would
conduct the flagship sale digitally, prompted
management to broker a compromise with
fellow sellers by tentatively scheduling a
back-up live Easter Round 2 auction on July 5,
pending a current government ban being lifted.
The initial 514-lot, two-day catalogue had
already been brought forward to April 5 and
6 but the selling of the Easter yearlings via the
Inglis Digital platform will now proceed over
four days and finish on April 8. Bidding will
start at 10am on April 5 and each lot will sell
sequentially in lot order from 10am on April 7
and 8. Continued on page 2>>

Queensland wintercarnival scrappedThe Queensland winter racing carnival has

The winter carnivals in all three codes,

metropolitan race programming with selected
feature races.
"Given the circumstances, it is the right decision

The company had been working
for weeks to ensure its premium Easter sale went ahead in the face of
a worsening coronavirus outbreak which resulted in federal and state
government-imposed restrictions on people movement and businesses.
Up until this week, Inglis was planning to have a live sale in front
of a select invite-only buying bench but that idea was quashed after
prime minister Scott Morrison on Tuesday banned auction houses from
operation in a bid to slow the rate of coronavirus infection.
The state of NSW and its capital Sydney, where Inglis was to hold the
sale, currently has the most cases of Covid-19 in Australia.
Arrowfield Stud’s withdrawal, and that of interstate vendors Gilgai
Farm and Element Hill also pulling out, came as another blow to the
prospects of the sale during a significant economic downturn as the
potential for the country to go into full lockdown if the coronavirus
continues to spiral out of control.
Other Easter sale vendors yesterday remained committed to the April
online auction, including large-scale rivals Coolmore and Widden Stud,
but Arrowfield Stud principal John Messara “felt we had no other option
but to conduct the sale of our horses by private treaty” once it could not be
held at Riverside Stables.
“It was a terribly hard decision to make but we didn’t bargain for having
these horses in an online sale,” Messara told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.
“I know there was no other option and Inglis tried really hard to find
a way through … and when they
went online it was an agonising
decision that we just had to make
for our own protection.”
On market values achieved
earlier this year, particularly
at January’s Magic Millions
Gold Coast Yearling Sale, it
would be reasonably assumed
that Arrowfield Stud’s draft of
60 yearlings would be worth
between $20 to $25 million.
Among Arrowfield Stud’s
draft was the Redoute’s Choice

(Danehill) half-brother to this season’s three-time stakes-placed juvenile
Stellar Pauline (Not A Single Doubt), a Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) son of
champion mare Miss Finland (Redoute’s Choice) and a host of colts and
fillies by champion sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice).
Messara was confident Arrowfield would be able to on-sell the
majority of their large draft of yearlings despite not having the assistance
of Inglis, in particular its buyer credit facility.
“I think we will have a group of them sold at sensible prices,
recognising the fact that the market will have to adjust downwards for
what’s happened in the world and the stock markets, etc, but there are
some prized animals there,” Messara said.
“Racing will revert back to normal in a few months’ time hopefully
and next year’s Golden Slipper and all the races next year (will still be on).
In the short-term, things will be a bit hard, but in the long-term I am sure
we will get back to square one again.”
Messara did not rule out offering some yearlings through the Easter 2 sale
if it proceeded in July and hoped that Arrowfield’s long-standing relationship
with Inglis would not be damaged by what transpired yesterday.
“We have been supportive of Inglis for 30 or 40 years now - a long time
- and we’ve been the leading vendor there for at least the last five years,”
he said.
“We are cognisant of the good job they do and it pains us to have done
what we have had to do, but we felt it was the right thing to do for this
enterprise.

“We have 110 staff here to feed and we
needed to ensure we could do so.”
An email was circulated to Easter vendors yesterday outlining the
plan to schedule an Easter Round 1 and Easter Round 2 sale before the
company later released a statement confirming the plan.
Vendors have the option to participate in the online sale or hold off
for the potential of selling at a live auction, or offering yearlings in both.
“To assist vendors and buyers during this difficult time we have
decided to conduct the 2020 Easter Yearling Sale in two rounds,” Inglis
said.
“We feel two rounds (or offerings) is most important as some vendors
who are not located in the Hunter Valley have not had as many inspections
as others.
“We also recognise that many buyers have not been able to undertake
inspections. Two rounds provides everyone with greater flexibility, with
our goal being to provide a vital service to our industry – to keep trade in
place between breeders and buyers.
“It is really important that the industry remains united, that vendors
hold firm and support the tradition of the Easter Sale and put the good of
the industry first and foremost.”
A number of interstate or not centrally located vendors have or will
move their horses to other stud farms to make it easier for buyers to
undertake inspections but three vendors have chosen to withdraw their
lots.
Seven New Zealand vendors have also been affected by a travel ban
into Australia.
Element Hill had a draft of four that included an I Am Invincible
(Invincible Spirit) half-sister to Group 1-winning stallion The Mission
(Choisir) and a Choisir (Danehill Dancer) half-sister to Group 2 winner
and Group 1-placed entire Zousain (Zoustar) but have withdrawn the
quartet.
Gilgai Farm owner Rick Jamieson has also taken out his trio of Easter
yearlings which included a Divine Prophet (Choisir) half-brother to
champion stayer Jameka (Myboycharlie) and an I Am Invincible colt who
is the first foal out of Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mare Ultimata, the sister to
Group 1 winner Shower Of Roses.
Gilgai Farm manager Kelly Skillecorn said not being able to parade
their horses in front of the buying
bench made it impossible for
Jamieson to offer his horses for
sale next month.
“It’s just going to be too
difficult for us and we’re going to
get left behind being down here
(in Victoria). We haven’t had
any on-farm inspections, so we
are just going to get crucified,”
Skillecorn told ANZ Bloodstock
News.
“We’ll take our chances by

can trade them as racehorses. If they are just OK they will go to Asia and
if they show a bit then we might jag a stallion but that is a needle in a
haystack job.
“But more than likely we will get them traded to Asia, be it Hong Kong,
Macau or Singapore.”
Skillecorn added: “It’s not their fault - it’s no one’s fault. The worst
thing we could have done was put a price tag on them. We could’ve gone
up there with an I Am Invincible colt with that pedigree and been offered
$200,000 when a couple of months ago he was a million-dollar horse and
that’s what’s going to happen.”
Inglis release new sales scheduleThe difficulties
faced by Inglis in
holding its Easter sale
also saw the company
release a new schedule
for the remainder of
2020 and in doing
so confirmed that
its feature breeding
stock offering, The
Chairman’s Sale, would be held as an online-only event. It will remain on
the same date as initially planned, being Friday, May 8.
The Australian Weanling and Broodmare Sale has now been split, with
the mare catalogue to be offered online on the digital platform on May
10 but the weanling sale is planned for July 10 in a live Riverside Stables
setting.
Next month’s Melbourne Gold Yearling Sale has also been postponed
until July 12 and 13 at Oaklands, with supplementary entries being taken
on top of the catalogue which had already been finalised.
The Great Southern Sale has also been pushed back and will follow
on from the Gold auction, with two days (July 14 and 15) set aside for
weanlings and other stock.
The Scone Yearling Sale has also been delayed due to it being deemed
that buyers need to be able to adequately inspect the horses, with a date
for the White Park offering set for July 26.
The Inglis Ready2Race Sale at Riverside Stables remains in its set date
of October 20, following The Everest carnival.

Zahra cleared of coronavirusMark Zahra has tested negative to coronavirus
- clearing racing to return in Victoria today.
Racing Victoria chief executive Giles Thompson
said the situation “has placed undue pressure
on Mark through no fault of his own". "I want
to again publicly thank and acknowledge the
professional and responsible manner in which
he has acted," Thompson said. “Mark’s negative
test paves the way for racing to resume in
Victoria tomorrow and for this we are extremely
grateful. We are acutely aware of the incredible
hardship that many Australians are facing as at
this time through the loss of their jobs, which
is why we are continuing to work so hard to
protect the livelihoods of all those within
Victorian racing who depend on it.”
Lees hoping to be Thorn in side of rivalsWhile Funstar (Adelaide) and Probabeel
(Savabeel) are set to clash for the fifth time in
tomorrow’s Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)
at Rosehill, they will face several fresh rivals,
including Kris Lees’ Game Of Thorns (Animal
Kingdom), who is coming out of the Kembla
Grange Classic (Gr 3, 1600m). Game Of Thorns
was one of the hard luck stories of the Kembla
race after she was strung up behind runners in
the straight but if the form out of the Classic does
stands up in the Vinery, Lees has no doubt his filly
will be right in the mix. "She was a bit luckless but
she's come out of it well," Lees said. "If there is
any benefit of having a 'held up' run, it is that they
normally bounce out of it well. Outside of the top
two, I think she's going to be very competitive. She
is on the way up so that's positive."
Probabeel on song for VineryMeanwhile, connections of Probabeel believe
she is in terrific order leading into the feature
race for three-year-old fillies and has every
chance to turn the tables on arch rival Funstar.
Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis credited
the work of Jamie Richards’ father Paul, along
with Ashley Handley, who have stayed on in
Australia to oversee the autumn campaigns of
Probabeel as well as Te Akau Shark (Rip Van
Winkle) and Melody Belle (Commands). “They
(Paul and Ashley) are really happy with her and
they are expecting she is going to go well over
the 2000 metres,” Ellis said.
Sunlight wins trialThree-time Group 1 winner Sunlight (Zoustar) is
one step closer to making her return to the races
with a one and a half length trial win at Strathalbyn
yesterday. Co-trainer Tony McEvoy told Racing.
com: "Barend (Vorster, rider) said she slipped at
the start, her hind legs basically went from under
her. From that point, he ensured she was OK, got
her balanced, found her rhythm and then let her
build into the trial. He felt she was a little tired
late but overall we were very happy. I would like
to add in difficult times, I felt the track was in
terrific order. Excellent coverage of grass and nice
moisture, well done to the Club and ground staff."
Sunlight will have another trial at Morphettville
on April 9 before resuming in the R.N. Irwin
Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Morphettville on April 18,
and will then target the Robert Sangster Stakes
(Gr 1, 1200m) on May 2 and The Goodwood (Gr
1, 1200m) two weeks later.
Mystic Journey in paddockAdam Trinder said yesterday that a decision
had been made to spell Mystic Journey (Needs
Further), given the uncertainty of interstate
travel in Australia.
The inaugural
All-Star Mile
(1600m) winner
returned with
a promising fifth
in the William Reid
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at
Moonee Valley. While Trinder said that she had
come through the run in great shape, a decision
had been made to pull up stumps and to focus
on the spring with closed borders in her home
state of Tasmania and her intended destination
of South Australia making a campaign too
difficult.
Libertini sidelinedAnthony Cummings’ Group 1 placegetter
Libertini (I Am Invincible) has been sent to the
paddock and will not race again this autumn
after sustaining an injury to a hind leg. The
three-year-old filly raced twice this time in,
finishing fourth in the Light Fingers Stakes
(Gr 2, 1200m) and ninth in the Newmarket
Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m).
Vengeur Masque retiredLast year’s Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)
runner-up Vengeur Masque (Monsun) has
been retired. "It's a sad day for us as he's
a stable favourite but after his run in the
Mornington Cup last Saturday we decided
it was time for him to finish," trainer Mike
Moroney told Racing.com. "He ran in an
English classic, the St Leger, then came to
us and won a Geelong Cup and a Queen
Elizabeth Stakes. He ran in a Melbourne Cup
and a Caulfield Cup and just missed when a
close second in a Sydney Cup so he doesn't
owe anybody anything."

Boss booked for Vow And DeclareMelbourne Cup-winning jockey Glen Boss will
link up with another Melbourne Cup winner in
the form of Vow And Declare (Declaration Of
War) when Danny O’Brien’s galloper tackles
the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at
Randwick next month. Boss announced the
booking on Twitter yesterday. He has only
ridden the four-year-old once, steering him
to victory in the Tatt’s Cup (Listed, 3000m) at
Eagle Farm last year. Vow And Declare returned
with a good third in the Australian Cup (Gr 1,
2000m) earlier this month.
Corstens forced to lay off staffTroy Corstens, who trains in partnership
with his father Leon, said he has been forced
to lay off staff amid the coronavirus crisis.
“It's literally a day-to-day proposition at the
moment," Corstens told Racing.com. "As a
horse training business, we don't run at a high
profit and things are really starting to tighten up
and unfortunately I've had a couple of horrible
conversations in the last couple of days. I've had
to put five staff off, it's been really hard because
they're not conversations that you want to have.
You're playing with people's lives and it's not
something that we want to do but we've had to
move five on to make sure that the other 25 can
stay in work for the time being and keep going."
Pike denied Covid-19 testPerth jockey William Pike was denied a
coronavirus test at Sir Charles Gairdner
Hospital in Western Australia on Wednesday
after he was made aware his connection to Mark
Zahra was responsible for the cancellation of
the meeting at Ascot. "Obviously with my link
to the Melbourne jockeys being the reason we
were called off I wanted to go and get tested so I
could have an answer and we could get on with
racing and also reassure my family that all was
okay," Pike told Racing.com. "They wouldn't let
me take a test as I've only come in contact with
someone who's come in contact with someone
else who has it. You can only get a test if you're
the one who's directly come in contact with
someone who's tested positive to it, so I was
told to go home."
Cumani considering options if racing is suspendedWith the uncertainty surrounding the Australian
racing industry due to the coronavirus pandemic,
Ballarat trainer Matt Cumani is considering his
options should racing be shut down. "Does a
racing shutdown mean a training centre shutdown
too?" Cumani said. "If we can continue training
then it's a completely different story to if we can't
train. And do they set a timeline on the shutdown
like they did with the AFL? All those different things
change the picture so much, so we are trying to
work through the different scenarios. We're hoping
at the very least we can continue to train because
then the staff have a job. We try and take a family
approach and a lot of our staff are full time which
would make it a lot harder. If we have to lay off staff
then you need an awful lot of cash for redundancy
payments and that might make it prohibitive."
NEW ZEALAND
Karaka May Sale cancelledNew Zealand Bloodstock (NZB) yesterday
announced the cancellation of the 2020 Karaka
May Sale. With New Zealand on lockdown, it was
becoming increasingly untenable for vendors
to prepare horses to go through the ring as
scheduled on May 15. After consultations with
vendors and buyers, NZB said that the feedback
suggested that the only move was to cancel
the sale and investigate alternative options.
“Even though the lock-down period may finish
in four weeks, it is highly likely that travel and
public gathering restrictions will remain in
place. We want to give our vendors and buyers
some direction and clarity, thus we have made
the call now,” NZB managing director Andrew
Seabrook said. “Gavelhouse.com provides a great
opportunity for those clients that still wish to
offer their horses to the market. As recent results
demonstrate, the success of the online sale keeps
going from strength to strength. New Zealand
Bloodstock is confident that its subsidiary will
handle the overflow well.”
Downey appointed Valachi Downs GMKevin and Joanna Hickman yesterday announced
the appointment of Gareth Downey as General
Manager for their operation, Valachi Downs.
Downey joined the stud in 2018 as their breeding
consultant, which focused on the management
of the stud’s stallions US Navy Flag (War Front),
Zacinto (Dansili) and Savile Row (Makfi). “We have
been impressed with Gareth’s in-depth knowledge
of our business and the natural leadership he
brings from his past management roles in both
this and other industries,” the Hickmans said.
“We believe Gareth is the right person to help us
progress our ultimate aspirations of breeding and
racing high quality athletes, as well as leading a
team where the culture is an important reflection
of our personal values.”
Cambridge Stud hunkers downBrendan and Jo Lindsay have prepared
Cambridge Stud for the New Zealand
government’s Covid-19 lockdown, which
began yesterday. Like most farms, Cambridge
is operating to reduced capacity, with all
horses in their care being looked after by staff
that live on-site at the stud farm. “We are very
grateful for their commitment,” the couple
said in a statement yesterday. “All other staff
will remain at home during this time and
will be welcomed back to the farm when the
government determines it is appropriate. We
remain committed to the welfare of all our staff
and horses, and will support them fully during
this time. We are also dedicated to the industry
and will continue with the vision we have for
Cambridge Stud when it is safe to do so.”
Te Akau spells large teamOne of New Zealand’s largest racing groups, Te Akau
Racing, has elected to spell nearly all of its horses
and will remain operational only with a skeleton
staff. “We have brought most of the horses home
to spell at Te Akau Stud,” said Te Akau principal
David Ellis. “We will only have a limited number of
horses at Matamata and a few yearlings that are in
the breaking-in and education phase. Te Akau is
trying to show responsibility. We have told all of our
staff that they have still got jobs. Some are having
holidays, some have relocated to Te Akau Stud to
help with all the horses that are spelling. Most of our
horses go out for a spell in the next month anyway.
After a month we will be into the period where the
tracks are heavy and Te Akau doesn’t race much
then anyway.”

Ellis proud of strong seasonTe Akau Racing has had one of its best seasons on
record with Group 1 winners in New Zealand and
Australia and the Singapore-based Mark Walker
leading the premiership there. “We have had an
absolutely unbelievable season,” said Te Akau’s
David Ellis. “To have a mare like Avantage win
Group 1 races at 1200 metres, 1400 metres, 1600
metres, and 2000 metres is just a remarkable
effort from Jamie Richards and all the team at
Matamata. We have won seven Group 1 races
already this year, 11 Group 1s this season, and 20
black-type races – 17 in New Zealand and three in
Australia. These sort of statistics don’t get achieved
very often in New Zealand. I am incredibly proud
of the entire team here at Te Akau Stud and Te
Akau Racing, and Te Akau Singapore too.”
Saundry urges vigilanceNew Zealand Thoroughbred Racing chief executive
Bernard Saundry has cautioned all participants in
racing to adhere to stringent government protocols
in response to the spread of Covid-19 for both the
good of the industry and the health and well-being
of the nation. “Industry participants will be aware
that this week, in view of the country moving to
Level 4 on its COVID-19 alert system, New Zealand
Thoroughbred Racing made representation to MPI
to allow for the care of our horses to continue during
this time. These steps were taken purely for animal
welfare purposes,” he said. Advice from the Ministry
for Primary Industries confirms that training
stables and centres, stud farms and agistment
properties, where horses are in containment are
listed as essential services under animal welfare
considerations. However, time is of the essence
for those businesses with over five staff members
(including the owner), who are required to register
with the Ministry for Primary Industries by 5pm
local time today. To register, go to click here.

Singapore racing cuts meeting numbersThe Singapore Turf Club (STC) announced
yesterday that Kranji Racecourse would be
closed to the public immediately until April
30 in an attempt to minimise further spread
of Covid-19. Local racing will continue but the
number of race meetings will be reduced, with
tonight’s meeting the first to proceed under the
new measures. Throughout April, there will
only be one meeting per week at Kranji, with a
revised schedule to be released in the coming
days. Next month features the running of the
Singapore Derby (Listed, 1800m) on April 18.
Gary Lo loses HK jockey’s licenceFormer Adelaide rider Gary Lo has been sacked
by the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC), just
days before he was due to make his debut in his
hometown. Lo, who rode 66 winners in South
Australia, had returned to Hong Kong earlier
this month. The HKJC’s Executive Director of
Racing Andrew Harding would not expand on
the decision beyond it being an “employment-
related matter” but the South China Morning
Post reported that Lo’s conduct had raised
questions at Sports Road. Lo was set to have his
first Hong Kong rides at Sha Tin on Sunday.
McNamara settles into Hong KongAustralian commentator Mark McNamara has
been earning plenty of plaudits since his move
to Hong Kong late last month. McNamara has
quickly settled into his role as the voice of
Hong Kong racing and last weekend provided
an excited call to match a thrilling finish in
the Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m), won
by Golden Sixty (Medaglia d’Oro). “I was
pretty nervous before the Derby, even though
in New Zealand I had called the Group 1s, the
Thousand and Two Thousand Guineas among
others,” he said. “This was a global audience
and it was important to get it right. You have
one chance to nail your first big feature race
and thankfully, it was the most remarkable,
entertaining Derby that they have had there in
a long time. I’ve learnt quickly that racing is the
be all and end all in Hong Kong.”

Zoffany to shuttle to Argentina Zoffany (Dansili) will shuttle from Ireland
to Argentina for the southern hemisphere
breeding season later this year after Haras
Firmamento reached an agreement with
Coolmore for the
leading sire's
services. “He
had a quick start
as a stallion and
now has larger
crops of better mares
to represent him, so the
best is yet to come,” said Laurent Benoit of the
Broadhurst Agency, who brokered the shuttle
deal. “I'm an admirer of Dansili and I think
Zoffany could be one of the leading stallions in
Europe in the coming years.” Zoffany will stand
at Haras Firmamento alongside Hit It A Bomb,
a Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (Gr 1, 1m) winner
by War Front (Danzig).
Racing Post suspends print operationsBritish industry newspaper Racing Post has
suspended its print operations in the face of
the Covid-19 crisis. Racing Post, whose owners
Spotlight Sports Group also produce ANZ
Bloodstock News, is the only daily newspaper
covering racing in the UK and Ireland. With
the sport coming to a halt in both countries
and betting shops closed until the crisis abates,
there was simply “no other choice”, according to
Racing Post editor Tom Kerr. “At some point in
the coming weeks or months, when the worst
of this disease has passed, horseracing will
resume. When racing is back, the Racing Post
newspaper will be back as well,” he wrote in an
open letter to readers.
Field of 13 for Florida DerbyThe Florida Derby (Gr 1, 9f), which has been
won by three of the last four horses to finish
first past the post in the Kentucky Derby (Gr 1,

at Gulfstream Park. The race still serves as a
Kentucky Derby points race this year, with the
winner all but guaranteed a start at Churchill
Downs, but instead of heading to Louisville
on the first Saturday in May, the three-year-
olds will have to wait until the first Saturday in
September due to Covid-19. The field is headed
by Grade 1 winner Tiz The Law (Constitution)
and Grade 2 victor Ete Indien (Summer Front),
who finished one-two in the Holy Bull Stakes
(Gr 3, 8.5f) last month.

"Our carnivals are used as the shop front to

It is the latest step taken by individual racing
bodies across Australia as authorities attempt
to balance restrictions imposed by federal and
state governments to counter coronavirus.
Racing has continued in Queensland with
strict biosecurity measures including no public
attendance but race clubs were facing millions
of dollars in losses if the carnival went ahead
without crowds.
RQ has also announced racing will be in five
regions and include eight zones from Tuesday
to help stem the spread of COVID-19.
The thoroughbred regions are:
• Metro North (Brisbane and Sunshine Coast);
• Metro South West (Gold Coast, Ipswich
and Toowoomba);
• Darling Downs and South-East
Queensland (SEQ) Coast;
• Central West and Central; and
• North West and North.
"With a raft of biosecurity measures
already in place, including patron-free racing
and a mandatory 14-day self-isolation period
for licensed participants, RQ will introduce
measures from Sunday that will provide five key
thoroughbred regions and four key greyhound
regions as part of a multi-staged approach to
health and safety," the statement said.
As part of the decision, thoroughbred
racing will be consolidated to 15 racetracks and
jockeys will be permitted to ride in one of the
five designated regions.
Trainers and stable staff will be further
restricted to one of eight zones within those
regions.
During this period, horses will not be
permitted to be transferred between zones for
the purpose of racing.
Any horse presently domiciled interstate
and not in Queensland by 11.59pm on Sunday
will not be allocated a region and will not be
able to race until further notice.
Horses will be permitted to be transferred
across regions for non-racing purposes such as
agistment or re-homing.
"The health and safety of our participants,
who are presently confronting a challenge like
no other is our paramount concern," Parnell
said.
"We must do everything within our powers
to provide for the 40,000 Queenslanders who
participate across the state.
"By introducing a regional racing model,
we are able to further support the Queensland
government's direction to stay local, reduce
non-essential travel and to limit the spread of
this insidious virus.
"In this instance, the sheer size of
Queensland is advantageous. The state is
almost eight times larger than Victoria and
twice the size of NSW and this presents racing
with a unique challenge and opportunity.
"While none of us knows what is on the
horizon, we can reduce the risk, limit the
spread and collectively work together for the
greater good."
In order to implement the regional racing
model, RQ will be forced to abandon Sunday's
programmed thoroughbred meetings.
Thoroughbred racing will recommence at
Mackay on Tuesday and will be restricted to
Central area participants.

BY DAVID MORGAN | HKJC_RACING
It’s taken 52 race meetings but a Zac
Purton double at Happy Valley on
Wednesday night meant the champion
jockey poked his nose into the lead in the
title race for the first time since late September.
The Australian ace arrived at the city-
side venue one win behind his great rival
Joao Moreira. At Sha Tin last Sunday, Purton
outpointed the Brazilian by three wins to two.
The championship race seems set for a
ding-dong battle through to the season’s final
meeting at the Valley on July 15.
“It looks that way but we’ll just see what
happens, it’s going to come down to which of us
gets the better support – that’ll be the decisive
factor,” Purton said.
Jolly Honour (Reliable Man) capped a race-
to-race brace for the rider and pushed him to
90 wins over Moreira’s 89. The Me Tsui-trained
galloper hit the front 250 metres out in the Class
3 Po Chong Wan Handicap (1650m) and held
the late drive of Naboo Star (Casino Prince) by
three-quarters of a length.
“He got a nice position and travelled well
the whole race,” Purton said. “He got left in
front a little earlier than I wanted but that’s just
the way the race unfolded – I think there’s more
there.”
The three-time champ enjoyed a cosier win
one race prior when the John Moore-trained
Shouson (Star Witness) took section two of the
Class 3 Kong Sin Wan Handicap (1200m) by two
and a half lengths.
“He travelled well into the race and did
it nicely but really everything just happened
perfectly for him,” Purton said.
Van Niekerk hits threePurton and Moreira are well clear of the rest
of the jockeys’ pack but a fascinating secondary
battle is taking shape after Grant van Niekerk
bagged a hat-trick.
The South African has struck a rich seam
of success lately, and, with his trio arriving on
the back of a brace at Sha Tin last weekend, the
South African is accelerating into a three-way
race for third place in this season’s premiership.
Karis Teetan currently holds the coveted
third spot with 50 wins, ahead of Vincent Ho’s
45, while Van Niekerk is now on 37.
“Vincent and Karis are two very good riders
so I’ll just take it as it comes; they are in sight
and I’ll be trying hard to get third place – it’s not
an easy task but when you get support here it’s
not impossible,” Van Niekerk said.
The rider opened his night’s account on
the Douglas Whyte-trained Best Alliance (Dark
Angel) in section two of the Tin Wan Handicap
(1650m), and that first success on a Whyte
stable galloper was his personal pick.
“Douglas is an iconic person – growing up
around racing people in South Africa you always
hear the name Douglas Whyte, so riding my
first winner for him in Hong Kong is something
special and close to my heart. Obviously, I’ve
been trying for a couple of meetings to get that
first winner for him so it’s really special for me,”
he said.
Van Niekerk made an early race-winning
move on Best Alliance as he urged the top-
weight from eighth with 900 metres remaining
to grasp the lead at the 700-metre mark; the
five-year-old kicked on at the turn for home and
held off his closing pursuers by a length and a
quarter.
“If you get horses with chances, and you
get the results, you naturally get confidence.
I’m getting the results and that confidence
is building, so hopefully I can keep getting
support,” he said.
Van Niekerk followed up in the next race,
section two of the Class 4 Sha Wan Handicap
(1000m) on the John Size-trained Zero Hedge,
and made it three wins aboard the Frankie Lor-
trained Blooming Spirit in section one of the
Class 4 Tin Wan Handicap (1650m).
But the in-form hoop left the track with a
sting of a three-meeting suspension (April 15
to 23) and a HK$120,000 fine for a charge of
careless riding aboard Best Alliance.
Neil Callan had to get tough with Super
Lucky (Myboycharlie) to come out on top
in a tight finish to the Class 4 Shek Pai Wan
Handicap (1200m). The Caspar Fownes-trained
six-year-old emerged from a pocket to score by
a head.
Matthew Chadwick took the finale, section
one of the Class 3 Kong Sin Wan Handicap
(1200m), on the Danny Shum-trained Winning
Method (Holy Roman Emperor). The three-
year-old finished strongly to score by a length
and a quarter.
Jockey Chad Schofield and trainer Chris
So combined for their first win together
since September 8, thanks to the success of
Wonderful Tiger (Approve) in the opener, the
Class 5 Waterfall Bay Handicap (1650m).

MAIDEN OF THE WEEK

With his win at Warwick Farm
on Wednesday, Damaged
(Exceed And Excel) joined
an illustrious group that
includes Redzel (Snitzel), Winx (Street
Cry), Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock), Plagiarize
(Stravinsky), Eremein (Timber Country), Show
County (County), Bint Marscay (Marscay) and
Slight Chance (Centaine).
The common thread? All broke 1:04 for the
Warwick Farm 1100 metres as two-year-olds.
This fact, pointed out by leading form analyst
Dominic Beirne on Twitter.
Even if the track was running incredibly
fast - which looks likely given the other two-
year-old winner at Warwick Farm, Forbidden
Love (All Too Hard), also broke 64 seconds,
although in slower time than the colt - it is still
a performance that suggests Damaged is one to
follow going forward.
In particular, the manner of Damaged’s two
and a half length win over Mark Newnham’s
debutant Codebreaker (Exceed And Excel)
suggests that the Godolphin colt will be a horse
to watch against better company.
“He’s pretty push button, which makes life
really easy,” said British jockey Tom Marquand,
who rode his first winner in the royal blue down
under. “He showed the promise that he half
teased he had. It’s always an honour to ride a
winner for Godolphin.”
Damaged had stepped out for the first time
on Boxing Day, finishing second behind the
subsequent Group 3 placegetter Return With
Honour (Fastnet Rock). He is next likely to head
to the Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) on the
first day of The Championships.
Damaged’s dam Shatters (Lonhro) was
lightly raced, winning three times in the Darley
maroon colours late in her three-year-old
season in 2009 and defeating the likes of Group
2 winner Vintedge (Flying Spur) and Listed
victor Jersey Lily (Catbird).
She has produced six foals; five who have
raced, with Damaged the fourth to win. Her best
foal has been Shards (Medaglia d’Oro), winner
of the Up And Coming Stakes (Gr 3, 1300m) in
2015; he continues to race in Singapore under
the name Wonder BB, having also had the
name Yulong Medal.
Shatters has an Astern (Medaglia d’Oro)
filly at foot currently and visited Astern again
last year.
Third dam Destruct (Sir Tristram) was
a Listed-winning half-sister to Strategic
(Zeditave) and Clang (Bellotto), while the
family traces back to 1967 Golden Slipper
winner Sweet Embrace (Todman).

BY KEN BOMAN | @ANZ_NEWS
Farnan (Not A Single Doubt)
staged a brilliant performance in
overcoming his wide barrier in
winning Saturday’s Golden Slipper
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), aided by a well-rated ride
from Hugh Bowman.
After beginning quickly from barrier 12,
Farnan worked in the early stages, covering the
first 200 metres in a conservative 13.49 before
crossing clearly to the lead with the next 200
metres proving a more taxing 10.93 – the first
400 metres on the Soft 5 track clocking 24.42.
On passing the 800-metre mark, Bowman
established a good pace for a Golden Slipper,
quick enough without inviting challengers, with
a 200-metre breakdown of 11.46, 11.43 and 11.26.
That saw the high-speed colt return a
600-metre section of 34.15 (from the 800m
to the 200m) before Farnan demonstrated
his class in repelling bids from Away Game
(Snitzel) and Mamaragan (Wandjina), running
his final 200 metres in 11.58 to win comfortably
by a length and three quarters.
The time for the 1200-metre journey was
1:10.19 - Farnan clocking a fast 56.66 for his
last 1000 metres, 45.73 (last 800m), 34.27 (last
600m) and 22.84 (last 200m), impressive closing
sectionals on the affected track.
The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-
trained colt is now the winner of five of his six
starts with prize money earnings of $2,502,200.
Connections subsequently announced Farnan
will now be spelled and reserved for his three-
year-old term.
The runner-up Away Game has now
established a unique juvenile record, winning
the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m)
at the Gold Coast in January, running a close
fourth after a torrid run in the Blue Diamond
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in February, supported
now by a brave Golden Slipper performance.
Away Game was timed to run her last 1000
metres in 56.80, last 800 metres in 45.84, last
600 metres in 34.38 and 22.95 for her final 400
metres.
The third-placed Mamaragan also achieved
a rare achievement, the colt proving to be so
competitive in Australia’s richest two-year-old
race when having only his second race start.
Mamaragan was timed to run his last 1000
metres in 56.63, last 800 metres in 45.75, last
600 metres in 34.28 with his final 200 metres in
23.02.
The John Thompson-trained colt looks to
have a very bright future.
Earlier in the day, his vastly more
experienced stablemate Dreamforce (Fastnet
Rock) broke through for his first Group 1 victory
after a well-rated, front-running ride by Nash
Rawiller saw the seven-year-old take out the
George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m).

Dreamforce went through the first 900 metres
in 55.97 (12.43 200m rate) before lifting the tempo
from the 600 metres, that final section clocking
34.09, a much quicker 11.36 200-metre rate.
Those tactics saw him hold off The
Bostonian (Jimmy Choux) who continued to
make ground in the sprint home, failing by a
short-neck at the post, with a final 600-metre
time of 33.75 (11.25 200m rate).
However, the tactics of the race proved
the undoing of the favourite Te Akau Shark
(Rip Van Winkle), who made ground without
threatening from back in sixth place at the 600
metres to take third, a length and a quarter
further back.
Te Akau Shark returned the quickest closing
sectionals of the race with his last 800 metres in
45.66, last 600 metres in 33.74, with his final 400
metres in 22.32.
By that stage of the day at Rosehill, a strong
line of thought had developed regarding the
track as favouring horses either leading or
racing close to the pace.
That could be correct but On The Watch
would also like to point out that the moderate
early tempo in a number of races would have
had a significant bearing on the results, as in
the aforementioned George Ryder Stakes.
And that certainly included the Rosehill
Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) where Castelvecchio
(Dundeel) raced relatively close to the pace
before defeating Prince Fawaz (Fastnet Rock)
by a half-length in a time of 2:04.10 in a race
that also developed into a sprint home.
The first 1400 metres clocked a steady
1:29.10 (12.72 200m rate) before the leaders
sprinted 34.99 (11.66) for the final 600 metres.
That certainly made the task of the favourite
Shadow Hero (Pierro), who was back in
tenth place at that stage, very tough with the
Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner then
making ground without looking dangerous for
fourth, clocking a quick 34.47 (last 600m) and
22.91 (last 400m).
Acknowledgement is also due the winner
Castelvecchio who sprinted home in similar
time, 34.47 (last 600m) and 22.81 (last 400m), to
record his second Group 1 victory.
But the races where a lack of a genuine early
tempo was most noteworthy were the Ranvet
Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and the N E Manion Cup
(Gr 3, 2400m), which were both taken out by
the Newmarket-based trainer William Haggas
and English-born jockey Tom Marquard.
Addeybb (Pivotal) staged a strong staying
effort in taking out the Ranvet Stakes in
impressive fashion at his Australian debut after
being taken to the front by Marquard.
After clocking a very moderate 1:19.58
(13.26 200m rate) for his first 1200 metres,
Addeybb rallied gamely in the sprint home
when tackled by the favourite Verry Elleegant
(Zed), that pair staging an exciting battle before
the English import scored by a half-length in a
time of 2.04.90.
Addeybb clocked a fast 45.24 (11.31 200m
rate) for his last 800 metres and 33.27 (11.09
200m rate) for his last 600 metres while Verry
Elleegant clocked 45.16 (11.29 200m rate) and
33.29 (11.09 200m rate).
The N E Manion Cup provided a similarly
exciting finish with Marquard’s forceful style
bringing out the best in the French-bred Young
Rascal (Intello) who lifted gamely under his
59-kilogram top-weight to defeat the favourite
Mugatoo (Henrythenavigator) by a long neck in
a time of 2:31.54.
That race also turned into a dash from the 800
metres after the first 1600 metres was clocked in a
very moderate 1:45.42 (13.17 200m rate).
Young Rascal was clocked to run his last
800 metres in 45.82 (11.45 200m rate) and 34.08
(11.36 200m rate) for his last 600 metres and
Mugatoo 45.63 (11.40 200m rate) and 34.00
(11.33 200m rate).
