Unit: ShakespearePre-introduction to Romeo and Juliet play



Activity DescriptionBefore beginning a lesson unit on Romeo and Julietstudents will be introduced to conventional and

unconventional love. Class

Students will be provided with a wide variety of

images where they would lead to a discussion on whichimages are conventional and unconventional love. Theteacher guides students into listening and following

along two of Shakespeare's sonnets. Students will then

contrast the different characteristics of “Love” in both sonnets. After this,

After reading, students will discuss the characteristicsof love of the sonnets. Afterward, students will break

up into groups of two and beginning to write two free











Sonnets“Shall I compare thee to a Summer's

day?”

be white, why then her breasts are dun; If hairs

be wires, black wires grow on her head. I haveseen roses damsk'd, red and white, But nosuch roses see I in her cheeks; And insome perfumes is there more delight Than in the

breath that from my mistress reeks. I love to her speak,- yet well I know That music hatha far more pleasing sound; I grant I never

saw a goddess go,- My mistresswhen she walks, treads on the ground; Andyet, by heaven, I think my love as rare As anyshe belied with false compare.
