8 STEPS TO SMALLER PORES1. The first step is to use skin care products that increase levels of collagen and elastin which will prevent

the pores from stretching. Look for ingredients such as Vitamin C and or retinol that increase collagen

production and increase elastin levels. Apply a topical vitamin C to your skin which you can find it in a

variety of facial cream and serums.2. It is also important to keep skin clear of oil and dead skin cells, which will only stretch your pores and

make them appear larger. Use products with alpha hydroxy acids (like glycolic acid and salicylic acid) daily

which will exfoliate, loosen debris, excess oil and bacteria, and will significantly reduce their prominence.

Salicylic acid can penetrate the fats in sebum much better than glycolic acid, which makes it an ideal treat-

ment to improve and lessen the appearance of the pores.

3. Decreasing sebum production is also a way to prevent clogged and stretched pores. One ingredient that

is said to have the ability to reduce sebum production is Retin-A. Prescription-strength retinoids (Retin-

A) and over-the-counter products with retinol will decrease oil production, increase collagen and elastin

production. Retinoids also hasten your skin’s cell-turnover giving dead skin cells even fewer opportunities

to clog and stretch your pores, while strengthening the pore walls.

4. Another trick to minimizing the appearance of your pores is to cause the skin around them to swell

slightly. As it does, the pores will appear to contract. Try a professional light procedure like IPL (Intense

Pulsed Light). IPL provides an immediate benefit and is worth every penny!

5. In office salicylic acid treatments help quicken the release of oil and dead skin cells, as it is giving a

stronger more potent penetration and a higher percentage of acid to the skin. It helps slough off dead cells

and debris while stimulating the skins natural renewal process.

6. Microdermabrasions and silkpeels are also in office procedures that exfoliate, suction pores out and

stimulate circulation sebum flow. These procedures are very beneficial in shrinking pores. Other benefits

to these treatments are that your skin will feel healthy and renewed with a radiant glow.

7. The final steps to smaller pores simply require good skin care habits. First and foremost: Wash makeup

and sun screen off every night. One excellent cleansing tool that can be purchased in our office, is the

very unique Clarisonic cleansing and exfoliating brush that can be used at home. From the creators of the

Sonicare toothbrush, the Clarisonic cleansing brush is an electronic, waterproof tool that removes 6 times

more makeup than manual cleansing.8. If you do develop pimples, avoid popping or picking at them. That will only stretch your pores further

and can lead to scarring.

Wishing you great skin!

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I have a tip for Kay, who wrote that her 9-month old Dachshund is trained to use a wet pad but tends to miss to one side. She could try using standard kitty-litter boxes, which have high sides. If they are too small for "Betty," another option is large plastic storage boxes. I have a 10-pound Chihuahua, and the storage boxes work perfectly. I keep an extra storage box so that I can wash the other one when it needs cleaning. I hope she gives it a try! -- Teresa P., Manchester, N.Y.

DEAR TERESA: Thanks! Those are great suggestions, and I hope

Kay will give them a try.• • •

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: In regard to the letter about an owner's spayed female cat that was spraying over the edge of her litter box: I have two male cats and one female, and the males do that some-times. My solution was to buy regular, no-lid litter boxes (I have three) because they're much easier to clean. Then I bought three 29-pound plastic tubs and turned them on their sides so the litter boxes fit right in.

I put one sheet of newspaper under the litter box, and one sheet against the back of the tub. This way the pee overspray doesn't puddle under the litter box. At cleaning time, I replace the paper, scoop the litter, quickly wipe down the sides of the tub ... and everybody's happy. -- Lisa P., via e-mail

DEAR LISA: Great idea! That's a fast solu-tion for cleanup as well. Thanks so much for shar-ing it!

A common drug for high blood pressure can help build muscles in seniors, according to researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. I saw one quote from a researcher that indicated a 70-year-old could end up with the muscle building power of a 30-year-old.

Here’s how it works: In those who are young, eating a meal releases insulin, which then opens blood vessels, which then make amino acids available for muscle build-

Blood Pressure Drug Helps Build Muscles

ing. In seniors, that dilation doesn’t happen -- and often there is muscle loss because the right nutrients aren’t get-ting to the muscles. Muscle loss equals weakness, and we know what that means: loss of mobility, loss of balance and the resulting falls that can lead to broken limbs.

While I wouldn’t want to have been a test subject in this particular bit of research, I do like the conclusions they’ve come to.

Dilation of the blood vessels, along with the poten-tial for increased muscle building, occurred in the study because of the high blood pressure drug that was given. The drug -- sodium nitroprusside -- causes dilation of the blood vessels, which sends nutrients to the muscles.

Participants in the study had to be dedicated to get through the research. They had to endure catheters being inserted into leg muscles so that insulin could be dripped in, mimicking the insulin increase that would normally take place after eating. The test subjects who were also given the blood pressure medicine along with the insulin ended up with increased muscle-building protein.

Additional studies are needed, of course, to check their

results. I hope they hurry up. Imagine how beneficial this would be. No more struggling to climb stairs, no more balance difficulties.

September 9 - 15, 2010

Brian Vickers, who made the Chase for the Sprint Cup in 2009, competed in only 11 races this season. After a 10th-place finish at Darlington Raceway on May 8, he fell ill.

Doctors dis-covered that Vickers, 26, had developed blood clots in his left leg, left finger

and lungs. A regimen of blood thinners made it impossible for him to compete in his No. 83 Team Red Bull Toyota.

Recently, Vickers underwent successful surgery to repair a small hole between the two atriums of his heart. He also was diagnosed with May-Thurner Syndrome, in which blood flow is re-stricted because a vein and/or artery are pinched. After surgery, a stent was placed in a vein on July 13 to open it.

Now, however, Vickers expects to return to full-time competition next year.

"Not only did we figure out what the problem was," said Vickers, "but we were able to fix it. ... I'm going to be back in the No. 83 and very excited to be back with Red Bull."

Vickers, who has mostly stayed away from the track, has spent off time traveling and working out.

"My main priority is getting back to racing next year," he said. "I've been given a gift. Things happen for a reason. I've had some time to think back and look at my career, both personally and professionally. I don't think I'll change a lot when I come back, but I do think I will change some. I'm probably going to tolerate a lot less, but at the same time there will be areas I will tolerate a lot more -- just depends on what it is. I have a new appreciation for life. I'm looking forward to it. I

Vickers Sets Return After Heart Surgeryfeel great and can't wait to race."

Vickers, from Thomasville, N.C., expects to be off blood thinners by January, at which point he will get back in a race car and begin testing

Q: I have been trying to find someone who knows the value of older postage stamps. I do not want to leave this collection at someone’s house or business. I would not want to be cheated out of any money that would be due to me. How expensive would it be to insure this collection? -- Susan, Port Orange, Fla.

A: Let me begin my answer by stating that most established stamp dealers are not dishonest crooks. In fact, many will gladly provide you with refer-ences. If you’re still hesitant to deal with an expert in the field, your next move is to purchase a good price guide. Two I think are superb and basic are The Official Stamp Collector’s Bible by Stephen R. Datz (House of Collectibles, $22), and The Blackbook Price Guide to United States Postage Stamps by Marc Hudgeons and Tom Hudgeons (House of Collectibles, $7.99). To insure your col-lection, you need to consult with the insurance agent who insures your home.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I carry the diagnosis of congestive heart failure. Medicines have made me feel pretty good. My wife thinks that I should do nothing. If I do much more than sit, she is all over me. A little bit of activity isn't dangerous, is it? If I don't do something, I am going to turn into a blob of fat. -- R.K.

ANSWER: You're in a boat with 5 million other Americans who have chronic heart failure. Heart failure means the heart doesn't pump enough blood with each beat to supply the body with oxygen. Shortness of breath on slight exertion is a principal sign.

Rest used to be the rule for heart-failure patients. Too much rest, however, deconditions the body and makes it even more difficult for a heart-failure patient to do things that are part of everyday life, like walking and a few household chores.

You have to ask your doctor what limits you should be bound by. If there's a supervised exercise program for heart-failure patients in your area, join it. Many hospitals sponsor such programs. I encour-age you to become active. You'll find that regular exercise permits you to do more than you believed you could do.

Congestive heart failure -- a common consequence of heart disease -- is discussed at length in the pamphlet on that topic. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 103W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: As you can see from my address, I live in the Deep South. I coach high-school football as well as

teach two history classes. I worry about heatstroke in my players because of the high temperatures here. Any suggestions on preventing this? -- L.P.

ANSWER: Your concern is justified. Between 1995 and 2007, 25 high-school students and five college students died from heatstroke while practicing football. These fatalities occurred in the first week of practice. It takes a good two weeks for people to acclimatize to heat. My best advice is to consult these Web sites for definitive tips: www.nata.org (NATA is the National Athletic Trainers Association) and www.acsm.org (the American College of Sports Medicine). I'm positive your school has a computer.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My son is married to a woman who has thyroid problems for which she takes medication. I think

it is the type where not enough thyroid hormone is produced. He is 32, and she is 34. They have been married for four years. They both want children. Is the thyroid problem preventing them from having children? -- J.J.

ANSWER: It shouldn't. If you are correct and your daughter-in-law takes thyroid hormone in pill form to correct the hormone deficit, then the problem -- hypothyroidism -- is taken care of. It shouldn't affect her fertility.

Many other thyroid problems exist, so I can't say this with absolute assurance. It depends on her thyroid condition and what kind of medicine she's taking.

Most of us have accepted the fact that it’s expensive to heat a home in the winter and keep it cool in the summer. With the price of natural resources soaring each year, we may feel that there is nothing we can do, but that’s not entirely true. There are lots of ways

to make heating or cooling our homes less expensive.

First, let’s talk about insulation. When prop-erly placed, insulation can halt or slow the transfer of heat. Newer homes are often built with modern energy-saving techniques, but additional insulation installed in older homes can save the homeowner thousands of dollars

Winterize Your Home Against Mother Naturein utilities over just a few years.

Are some rooms in your house cooler than others during the winter? Do your feet get particularly cold when you’re in a room located over a crawl space? Insulation can help. Experts say all open cavities of walls, fl oors and ceilings adjacent to living spaces should be insulated. Insulation not only re-duces your utility bills by saving energy, but

it also makes your house more comfortable by helping maintain an even temperature. It also increases the resale value of your home while reducing external noise by acting as a buffer. Additionally, properly installed insulation can reduce the growth of molds and mildew that can cause serious health problems.

Insulation is manufactured from all dif-ferent types of materials. Most common are fiberglass, polyester and wood, but there is also plastic from recycled milk cartons and straw. Each is regulated and rated by R-val-ues. The higher the R-value, the better the insulating properties. Generally speaking, in the Midwest the roof should be insulated with R-values between R-40 and R-50, walls above grade between R-20 and R-30, and basement walls with R-10. In most homes, the highest heat loss occurs through the attic. Attic insula-tion should have a minimum value of R-40. Install a vapor barrier between the insulation and ceiling to restrict moisture.

Several factors can determine how much in-sulation your home needs—the climate where you reside, the structure of your home and the type of furnace or air conditioning unit you use. You might consider getting an energy au-dit of your home to determine where the weak points are located. Some utility companies of-fer free audits. You can also check with your state energy office for insulation recommenda-tions or go online at www.eren.doe.gov for all kinds of energy-efficient information.

Keep your heating equipment serviced and maintained regularly for top performance. If you need new equipment, purchase an energy-efficient model. It may cost more upfront, but you’ll make up for that by paying less to the utility company.

Weatherizing your home, sealing air leaks most often caused by shiftng and settling overtime, can also prevent heat loss during winter. Most often, these leaks occur where two different building materials meet. Some of the most common areas include: narrow spaces around roof flashing, vents and pipes where air can travel, cracks in bricks or foun-dation walls, and gaps where the foundation wall meets the siding and around door frames. Two 1/8” gaps can let in as much cold air as a window left open 6” all winter. Imagine how much money that would cost you. Inspect the exterior of your home carefully from differ-ent angles to spot cracks and gaps. Then use caulking or weather-stripping to seal them.

Water heaters are the second-largest energy users in the home. Experts recommend insu-lating an older water heater or purchasing an energy-efficient model. Buying an energy-effi-cient water heater can be expensive, but in the long run, it will cost less to operate. Addition-ally, insulating hot water pipes with half-inch foam or pipe tape can save $25 annually.

Properly planned lighting can affect energy use as well. Compact fluorescent light bulbs last three to four times longer and are more efficient than ordinary incandescent light bulbs, yet give off the same light. Avoid the long-life incandescent variety—they are the biggest energy burn-ers. Use task lighting where needed and turn off the general light-ing when unneces-sary. Above all, don’t leave lights burning when they’re not be-ing used.

Do your own energy audit this fall. Locate sources that leak cold air, keep your hot water heater and furnace tuned up, and use lighting wisely to keep those high utility bills at bay.
