For years, you favored country décor, butlately you’ve been leaning more towardcottage style. You like the touch of romancethe style brings to a room. Slowly but surely, you would like to change out the décor inyour home from country to cottage, but first, you need to learn more about cottage style.

Although similar to country décor, cot-tage style is lighter and airier. White plays apredominant role, with many furniturepieces painted or slip-covered in white. Paleblues, greens, yellows, pinks and purples arealso used in cottage-style rooms.

Fabrics may be old or new. Quilts are a favor-ite for cottage-style bedrooms, and window treat-ments are usually sheer to allow light to flood in.Florals may be paired with stripes or solids, andmost rooms are layered in a variety of textiles, including lace, ruffles and handmade needlework.Fabrics are unified through color, with one to twocolors running throughout each.

Furniture may run the gamut from brand-newoverstuffed pieces to distressed pieces. Cottage-style furniture often comes from various placesand is unified through paint and fabric. It is notuncommon to find a mix of wicker, iron andwooden pieces in rooms. Outdoor furniture maybe brought in to lend a natural touch.

Accessories are usually personal, with collec-tions of family photos, jewelry and other memen-tos splashed across the rooms. Fresh flowers inold pitchers add warmth to tables, while candleshelp create a romantic feel. Old plates, trays, tea-cups and saucers add to the vintage look, whileold birdhouses, wheelbarrows and garden toolshelp bring the outdoors in.

Cottage style is a mix of the old and new, andthe more layered and cozier rooms feel, the bet-ter. Cottage style is all about comfort.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am taking my twoteenage boys backpacking in the Southwestthis August. It will be hot and dry, and I ampreparing for those conditions. I need someguidance on what fluids to drink. I was taughtthat drinking plain water is the best way to stayhydrated. My older son says his class was toldnot to drink plain water, because it couldcause brain damage. What is this all about?— F.W.

ANSWER: It’s all about becoming sodium-depleted and having the brain swell as a result. The condition is hyponatremia.

It used to be taught that, when exercising inhot weather, people should guzzle water atevery opportunity, even when they don’t feel

What to Drink

When Exercising

in the Heat

thirsty. That can be dangerous if the exerciselasts for hours and hours and if the only liquiddrunk is water. Too much water dilutes bodysodium. That, in turn, can cause brain swellingand, in the extreme, death.

Up-to-date advice is to let thirst be a roughguide for how much liquid you drink. If peopleare engaged in prolonged exercise, it is goodto include some salt in the program. Half ateaspoon of salt and half a teaspoon ofbaking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in a quartof water can keep body sodium levels fromdropping. For you and your sons, it would beadvisable to salt your food and to eat somesalty snacks — another way to ensure bodysodium doesn’t bottom out.

Hyponatremia is uncommon. Dehydration iscommon. For most, drinking water as areplacement fluid in hot weather is fine. It’snot going to lead to a dangerous drop in bodysodium. Only those who lose lots of sweat forlong periods of time run the risk ofhyponatremia by drinking pure water.

This is advice that doesn’t apply only toathletes or backpackers. It applies to all thosewho are out working in hot weather andsweating up a storm.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have hypertension,

and I go to the beach often. Can salt in saltwater get through the skin as medical patchesget through the skin? My doctors haveincreased my dose of medicine and haveadded additional medicines without muchimprovement in my blood pressure.

Could the salt water I swim in be keepingmy blood pressure high? — G.S.

ANSWER: G.S., I know I answered this questionbefore, but you must not have seen it. I’ll do itagain.

The salt in salt water doesn’t get through yourskin. Swimming in salt water doesn’t raise bloodpressure. It improves it. All exercise does.

If you miss the answer this time, G.S., I haveto drop the question. People will think I’mobsessed with it.

The booklet on hypertension provides moredetails on this epidemic illness. Readers canobtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No.104W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for$4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’sprinted name and address. New Home-BuyersCan Pocket $8,000As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment

Act of 2009, a new tax credit will allow first-time homebuyers to claim up to $8,000. Unlike the tax credit planof last year (which allowed an interest-free tax “loan”of $7,500), this one doesn’t have to be paid back.

Qualifying homes must be purchased between Jan.1, 2009, and Dec. 1, 2009. “Purchased” means that youactually close on the home, with settlement completedand title transferred to you.

The credit is 10 percent of the purchase price, with acap of $8,000.

Any type of home can qualify, whether it’s a resale,a new one, one you have constructed, a condo, a mo-bile home, single family or townhouse.

“First-time buyers” are those who haven’t owned a

principal residence during the previous three years. Aprincipal residence is one where you live more than halfthe time. Owning a vacation home won’t disqualify you,as it’s a place you stay sometimes, but not where youlive.

There are income caps: If you’re single, income can-not exceed $75,000. For married couples, that amountis $150,000. Depending on your modified gross income, there is a phase-out of the credit amount near the top ofthe income range.

To keep the credit, you need to live in the home (useit as your principal place of residence) for three years. If you sell the home, you have to pay back the full credit.

Use IRS Form 5404 to claim your credit when youfile. Beware: The form is for both the old ($7,500) andnew ($8,000) credits. Read the form carefully as youfill it out. That credit amount is then transferred to yourForm 1040.

If you qualify for the full $8,000, but don’t owe thatmuch in taxes, you’ll end up with a credit at the bottomof your Form 1040, and a check for the balance will besent to you from the Internal Revenue Service.

If you bought a home and qualified under the $7,500pay-back scenario and filed your 2008 tax forms, youcan file an amendment to your taxes (Form 1040X) toclaim the new credit. Look online for IRS news release

“The Red Wolf Conspiracy”by Robert V.S. Redick

(Ballantine Books, $26)Reviewed by Ealish Waddell

They don’t make ‘em like the Chathrand anymore— because they can’t. The ship is so ancient that thesecrets of its creation are lost to the centuries. Giganticand majestic, the Chathrand is a mobile city, a floatingpalace meant to spark awe and fear at the glory of theEmpire of Arqual anywhere it goes. Its latest missionis one of global significance: to deliver a young brideto her promised husband, a prince of the neighboringland of Mzithrin, and seal peace between the warringnations.

But something more sinister is going on in the bow-els of the Chathrand, where assassins prowl, stowawayslurk and a decidedly unpeaceful conspiracy is beingsecretly hatched. Young Pazel, a ship’s boy with a tragichistory and unsettling psychic abilities, is one of thefirst to catch on, followed quickly by the bride herself,a smart and feisty chick who wasn’t too thrilled abouther fate to begin with. Others soon join their alliance, including her gentle-but-deadly guardian, a tribe of tinymythical warriors, a shape-shifting wizard and one veryfrightened rat.

As snatches of the plan come together, the real mis-sion of the Chathrand begins to come to light, and it isanything but diplomatic. Everything seems to centeraround the mystery of the Red Wolf — what is it, wherecan it be found and what is its connection to an evilthat was supposedly destroyed years before?

Prophecy, betrayal, integrity and justice all play apart in this twisty tale, the first in a promised series, and characters good, evil and ambiguous populate thepages. Many common fantasy elements are present —talking animals, wee people, mermaids, wizards — buttweaked in new ways that give the old ideas fresh life. With its authentically salty shipboard setting and well-realized world-building, “The Red Wolf Conspiracy”is a rollicking read that fantasy fans should enjoy.

Montoya Still Trying to Make NASCAR Splash

May 28 - June 3, 2009

The new season has brought changesfor Juan Pablo Montoya.

The owners of his No. 42 car, ChipGanassi and Felix Sabates, merged their

operation with Dale Earnhardt Inc., creating, along with Teresa Earnhardt,Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates. This, in turn, changed the makeof Montoya’s car from Dodge to Chevrolet.

Improvement, so far, has been modest. Montoya’s teammate, Martin TruexJr., is 19th in the Sprint Cup point standings. Montoyais 14th. To make the Chase, Montoya must finish theregular season in the top 12. He’s only 16 points be-hind the current occupant of 12th place, Carl Edwards.

Montoya, a driver of international renown, is in histhird Sprint Cup season. His lone Cup victory occurredon June 24, 2007, at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma,Calif. Montoya was Raybestos Rookie of the Year, but he already had victories in the Indianapolis 500and the Grand Prix of Monaco on his resume. Now, at33, he is completely focused on becoming a champi-onship contender in stock cars.

“We know where we need to go,” he said. “We knowwhat we need to achieve. I think there are a lot ofthings in the pipeline that are going to make us a littlebit better every week. As long as we keep finding littlethings, we’ll be fine.

“You’ve got to keep finding performance. You can-

not sit and hope you are going to run well. We’re (not) doing that. We have goodideas of things we need to do, and it’s just a matter of time to see what happens.”

Montoya, from Bogota, Colombia, has three top-10 finishes so far. Surpris-ingly, two have been on short tracks. He won his first pole at TalladegaSuperspeedway on April 24. He thinks he’ll be in victory lane again soon, butrecognizes the importance of consistency in making the Chase.

“That’s the key to making the Chase, and we know that,” he said. “A lot wentinto putting these teams together. ... Phoenix (April 18) was the first step towardgetting everybody on the same page.

“Truex was competitive. I was competitive. It’s exciting. I think the future ofthe company looks really, really bright, and it’s positive.”

Q: I have a Tested XX Case knife that was given tomy grandpa in about 1930. It is encased in green bonetortoise shell and has a 3-inch blade. What is it worth?— Stan, Stigler, Okla.

A: I’ll cut right to the chase. According to the Ameri-can Premium Guide to Knives and Razors by JimSargent (Krause, $24.99), your knife was manufacturedbetween 1920 and 1940 and is worth about $250. Thevalue of your knife depends a great deal on its condi-tion. A knife in its original box is worth more than onethat has obvious wear.

• • •Q: I read one of your columns that mentioned older

A: I found your lunchbox referenced in Warman’sLunch Boxes Field Guide by Joe Soucy and publishedby Krause Publications. According to Soucy, yourlunchbox is worth about $475. The thermos is listedfor $120. As with most collectibles, values depend onthree major factors: rarity, demand and condition. Youalso should realize that values listed in a price guideare only an opinion. It doesn’t necessarily mean youcan actually get the amount stated in the marketplace.Anyone who has a vintage lunchbox should invest$12.99 to purchase this excellent price guide.

A: Although there are several guides on the market,I think the Standard Catalogue of Football Cards(Krause Publications, $24.99) is one of the better ones.It covers all football cards issued since 1894, including3,400 sets and 550,000 cards. You can order it from thepublisher at www.krause.com; KP Books, 700 East StateSt., Iola, WI 54990; 888-457-2873.

Q: I know it’s a bit late in the season for thisone, but when I read your column on cleaningoriental rugs, I had to write. I think you missed iton this one. Soaking and shampooing those arearugs is difficult and time-consuming. Water andchemicals rot the webbing. Instead of all that work, try cleaning rugs with snow. That’s right, snow!

After a fresh snowfall, vacuum both sides ofthe rug indoors as you indicated. Then, take therug outside and lay on a clean patch of snow.Throw snow on top of the rug and sweep off witha broom or brush. Repeat until the snow comesoff clean, then flip the rug and do the other side. The dirt will pour off using this method.

If you live in an area without snow or it’s pastsnow season, use crushed ice on a deck or cleangarage floor instead.

Use Snow to CleanOriental Rug?

The rug will not get soaked through, and it looksand smells clean. No chemicals, no taking days todry. Tell your readers to try it! - Ruth, via e-mail

A: Wow, that’s definitely a cool suggestion! I’venever heard of this method, but then I grew updown south. If anyone else has cleaned an orientalrug in a similar manner, I’d love to hear from you.

I suppose the tiny ice particles that make upfallen snow work like scrubbers, getting deeperinto the rug’s nap than a brush could and pickingup dirt particles. As always, I recommend rugowners doing this for the first time test a smallsection of the rug or clean a rug that’s not a highlyvalued antique, for obvious reasons. And after-ward, do hang the rug up or lay out to make sure itdries thoroughly.

HOME TIP: When cleaning a stain or spill oncarpet or rugs, never rub the spot roughly. Instead, blot up the liquid or cleaning solution with a softcloth.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: You recently wrotea long explanation of how to get rid of fleas onpets and in the house. I have two very large (morethan 100 pounds) dogs, very furry, Great Pyrenees.I also have seven cats. I have found with the re-cent developments in treatments, none of the mea-sures you listed are necessary.

I have one cat that is hypersensitive to flea sa-liva. I keep an eye on him, and when I notice thelittle telltale bumps just at the base of his tail, Iknow we have been infested. I immediately treatall of the animals with either Frontline or Advan-tage. End of story. No sprays, no bombs, no bath-ing fighting cats.

shoulderblades kills the fleas on them. The remain-ing fleas in the house and yard jump on the ani-mals to feed, and then are killed. I never have totreat anything but my animals. Even my car inte-rior is fine. The stuff lasts 30 days. I simply treatagain as many times as necessary until the frostcomes and flea season is over.

As long as my pets are treated regularly, I don’thave to worry about any hatching eggs: They justhatch, feed and die. So simple and easy. I hopeyou will consider suggesting this course of treat-ment. All of the steps you listed easily could dis-courage someone from becoming a pet owner, andit does not have to be so difficult and time-con-suming. — Debbie S., via e-mail

However, many of myreaders areleery of using atopical treat-ment, and others tell me it didn’t work at all, par-ticularly with outdoor pets. For them, alternativeprevention and treatment methods must be ex-plored.

“Thrilla in Manila: Muhammad Aliand Joe Frazier” — The “Thrilla inManila” was the third and finalboxing match betweenMuhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. The 1975 bout is considered bymany to be the greatest fight of thepast half century.

It also was the most brutal. By the13th round, Frazier, who had acataract in his left eye and whoseright eye had been punchedclosed, stepped into the ring for the14th round effectively blinded. After a vicious 14th round, Ali hadtaken so much damage he wasbegging his trainer to cut off hisgloves and end the fight. His trainersaid no.

Frazier’s trainer, seeing his manwas blind, threw in the towel beforethe 15th-round bell, and Ali won bya TKO before collapsing onto themat. Ali later said of the bout, “It isthe closest to dying I’ve everbeen,” and the injuries sustained inthe match would forever impactboth fighter’s health.

This documentary is told fromFrazier’s perspective and highlightshow the racial politics of the eraheightened the emotion of thebout. Frazier had been a staunch

ally of Ali during the years whenhe was banned from boxing foropposing the Vietnam War.Frazier had lobbied PresidentNixon to reinstate Ali, which ledto the “Fight of the Century”match between Frazier and Ali.

By the time of the Thrilla inManila, Ali had, in Frazier’s eyes, betrayed their friendship bypublicly taunting and humiliatingFrazier by calling him a gorilla,Uncle Tom and The White Man’sChampion. When Frazier enteredthe ring for the Thrilla in Manila,he was enraged, focused andwanting revenge against theman who had humiliated him.
