That’s it. You’ve had it with hunting on publiclands. There are just way too many hunters outthere to deal with. You long for more privacyand a better chance at bagging the big one. Youcould hunt on the private land of a friend, butyou’d rather have your own piece of land to hunt. The time has come for you to get out there andpurchase some hunting land.

Whether for hunting or some other purpose, buying land is a big deal. If you are married, you need to discuss your desire with yourspouse and make sure they are onboard. You

YOUR VERY OWN SPACEalso need to check your financial picture andmake sure you have the resources for such apurchase. Speak to a lender, find out how muchyou can borrow and work to stay within thatbudget. Get a preapproval letter; this will showany sellers you are serious. Finally, take a hardlook at your schedule and make sure you havethe time to care for and manage the land. Tobring the best game to your land and ensure itstays there, you may need to take several stepsover time.

Before you start looking at land, there aresome questions you need to ask yourself. Whatkind of game do you plan to hunt? How muchof a drive are you willing to make? When doyou need to purchase the land? Whatstructures, if any, do you plan to build on it?The answers to these questions should helpyou narrow your search considerably. If youhunt deer and waterfowl and plan to build ahunting cabin, you will need an area attractiveto those types of game with enough space fora cabin.

You can search for hunting land yourself, oryou can hire a broker who specializes in huntingland. If you haven’t bought much property, thismight be the best way to go. A good broker willguide you every step of the way, mostimportantly through the negotiation process, and ensure you end up with a suitable piece ofland. Should you decide to find and buy the landyourself, make sure you hire an attorney toensure the title is valid and draw up a bindingagreement.

Once you have discovered a few plots of landthat interest you, you need to do some furtherresearch, Get a topographical map of each areaand some stats on the wildlife there. Check outany neighboring properties. If the lands

adjoining are off limits to hunting, you mayexperience a swell in game the moment youimplement food and water strategies and havetrouble managing it. If the lands adjoining aregeared toward hunting with all of the rightmanagement techniques in place, you may findit easier to manage your land in general.

These are just some of the issues to considerwhen buying a piece of hunting land. There maybe others depending upon your personalsituation. For the best results, consult a broker. As soon as you find the ideal piece of land, makean offer. Don’t dawdle. Hunting land goes quickly, and chances are another buyer is right behindyou.

As soon as you have sealed the deal, getready. That’s when the real work will begin. Youwill have to start thinking about andimplementing some management strategies.Keep in mind that more effort you put into thisstep, the happier you will be with the results.

Just think. After months of hard work, you willhave a piece of land all of your own to hunt. Nomore walking around and trying find an areaaway from the mass of hunters.

Q: What is the lovely Ming-Na doinglately? I really liked her on “ER,” andmy daughter absolutely loved her in“Mulan.” — Wendi H., Akron, Ohio

A: I recently spoke with Ming-Na,who is promoting her new SyFy show,“Stargate Universe,” which also starsRobert Carlyle and Lou DiamondPhillips. When asked what sets this“Stargate” apart from its predecessors(“Atlantis” and “SG-1”), Ming-Na ex-plains: “There’s a whole different feel andvibe to the show. It’s more characterdriven and more — I don’t want to saydarker, because it isn’t; there’s a lot ofbright scenes — but it definitely has a more serious tone.” You can catch “StargateUniverse” on the SyFy network on Friday nights, with repeats throughout the week.Check your local listings.

• • •Q: I remember an old-ish movie that starred Michael Douglas, where his character

gets called to serve in Vietnam, but he doesn’t want to go and considers fleeing toCanada. What was it called, and is it available to purchase? — Gerry N., Portland,Maine

A: You’re in luck. The movie you’re thinking of is “Summertree,” which premieredin 1972, at the height of the United States’ controversial involvement in the VietnamWar. It recently was released on DVD and is available for purchase. “Summertree” co-stars Jack Warden, Barbara Bel Geddes, Rob Reiner and Brenda Vaccaro. Kirk Dou-glas bought the rights to the off-Broadway play of the same name by Ron Cowen onwhich the film was based. It was a gift to his son after Michael was fired from the stageproduction.

• • •Q: I heard that “The View” co-host Sherri Shepherd is getting her own sitcom. If so,

what’s it about, and is there any chance she could get any of her “View” co-hosts toguest star on the show? — Stephanie Z., via e-mail

A: Lifetime Television began airing “Sherri” on Tuesday nights in early October, and the show follows the story of a working mother and part-time entertainer (Sherri)trying to pick up the pieces of her life when she splits from her cheating husband. Asfor having her “View” co-hosts on, Sherri tells me: “I would love to! Maybe I could getWhoopi, because she is still acting. But Joy is not interested in acting, Barbara doesn’tdo that sort of thing, and Elizabeth keeps getting pregnant — so, it doesn’t look like itwill happen for the three of them. But I’ll work on Whoopi.”

• • •Q: Is Jamie Lee Curtis’ husband a member of the Royal Family of England? How

long have they been married? — H.F. in AlabamaA: Christopher Guest, Jamie’s husband of 25 years, is the 5th Baron Haden-Guest in

the House of Lords. He inherited his title from his father, Peter Haden-Guest, whopassed away in 1996. As a Lord, he has no actual governing rights since the passing ofthe House of Lords Act 1999, which removed rights of those who inherited their seats.

For Kevin Harvick, it’s been a rough year. For Harvick’s team, Richard Childress Rac-ing, it’s been a rough year.

Harvick and his teammates — ClintBowyer, Jeff Burton and Casey Mears — areall trapped outside

the Chase for the Sprint Cup, hoping that a victory willearn some attention in a setting where the 12 contend-ers make everyone else seem irrelevant by compari-son.

Notwithstanding a recent runner-up finish at Atlanta,Harvick and his No. 29 Shell/Pennzoil Chevrolet havebeen significantly off their game. A 32nd-place finishin New Hampshire left Harvick 22nd in the Sprint Cuppoint standings. He’s finished in the top five only threetimes all year, and his top-10 finishes number only five.

A year ago, all three RCR Chevys (a fourth wasadded before this season) made the Chase. Harvick, who is from Bakersfield, Calif., finished fourth in thefinal point standings, but he hasn’t actually won sincethe 2007 Daytona 500.

“Well, our cars have run fairly well for the last seven, eight weeks,” said Harvick, 33. “We just wind upwrecked or something stupid happening for the lastlittle while. Seems like everything that’s been happen-ing has just kind of piled on.

“You know, any momentum is in a good ... in a gooddirection is a positive thing for us. It lets us know thatwe do remember how to race, just overcome a lot ofthings and hopefully keep it going.”

Harvick made those remarks after the second-placefinish on Sept. 6 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Sincethen, he’s finished ninth at Richmond and 32nd at NewHampshire.

Childress, a former driver who enjoyed his greatestsuccess while the late Dale Earnhardt was winning sixof his seven championships in his cars, has had to facea cutback in support from General Motors. He said re-cently that he expects to field four Chevrolets againnext year.

“Who knows what will happen? There are a lot of

things moving forward, you know. I look around the garage, and there’s someof the press and some of the other companies that were in here that have madecutbacks, too,” said Childress. “We’ve all just got to adjust for these times, andracing is no different.

“Were in the greatest country in the world, and we will survive this.”

“Fatal Journey:

The Final Expedition of Henry Hudson”by Peter C. Mancall (Basic Books, $26.95)

Reviewed by Larry Cox

Henry Hudson was an English navigator andexplorer. Not much is known about his early life, butas an adult Hudson was a stubborn and determinedman. In fact, it was that very bullheadedness thateventually led to his death.

Hudson’s first three attempts to find a northeastpassage to Asia ended in failure, although he didbecome the first European to explore parts of NorthAmerica and helped establish Dutch claims in theregion. During the winter of 1610, he decided tomake yet another try. Financed by the VirginiaCompany and the British East India Company, hepicked a 22-man crew that included his 17-year-oldson, and together they set sail in a small ship, TheDiscovery.

Hudson chose a northerly route past Ireland, andafter avoiding fields of icebergs and overcomingother obstacles, his ship became icebound in whatwould soon become known as Hudson Bay. By thetime the spring thaw arrived, foodsupplies were scarce and the crew hadbecome cranky. Hudson wanted topress on, but his plan triggered a mutiny.

Hudson, his son and seven others wereplaced in a skiff and set afloat in thebay, where they quickly perished in oneof the most remote places on theplanet. Their remains were never found.

It isn’t easy to blow the dust off of 400years of history and make it relevant, butPeter C. Mancall has managed to dojust that. Mancall, a professor of historyand anthropology at the University ofSouthern California, has meticulouslypieced together what little is knownabout Hudson and the terrible fate hewas dealt on his final expedition.

This is an incredible, true story ofmutiny and murder set against the harshbackdrop of the Arctic. It is an

extraordinary tale of one man’s determination andthe marks he made on world history that continueto reverberate even to this day.

AKC Can Clarify Dog-Show RulesBy Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read an articleby a local writer about a dog show that washeld here recently. The writer seemeduncertain of the rules for this type of eventand left some information out. I thought thatyou might like to get this information on dogshows out to all of your readers as well.

All dog shows are managed by a showsuperintendent, who is present for theduration of the show and will answer anyquestion regarding the appropriate rules andregulations. Further, all American KennelClub-sponsored shows (conformation andobedience) will have free copies of the bookletDog Show Rules at the superintendent’s deskwithin the show location. A copy of the samecan be ordered from the American KennelClub’s Web site (www.akc.org).

I’m not an AKC employee, but I’ve beenshowing dogs for quite some time and, assuch, questions have arisen that neededanswering then and there ... hence I learnedof the availability of this booklet. Ruleschange from time to time, so the booklet canbe a handy item to have on hand. — Jacki S.,Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich.

DEAR JACKI: Many thanks, and I’m suremy readers will benefit from your

information. The American Kennel Club is animportant source of information about dogselection and care, show rules, breeding andmany other topics. I strongly encourage dogowners — whether they are interested inparticipating in dog shows or just improvingtheir knowledge of care and training — to visitthe Web site above.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Through a CT scan, Ihave been diagnosed with extensivediverticular disease. You’ve mentioned that alack of fiber as the cause. All my adult life, Ihave eaten whole-wheat bread, lots of fruitand vegetables, and plenty of fiber. I can’tremember ever being constipated. I wasshocked by the diagnosis. My maternalgrandmother finally succumbed to it. Could Ibe genetically predisposed to it? Would eatingyogurt containing live bacterial culturesprovide any value? — B.S.

ANSWER: A diverticulum is a small bulge onthe outer colon wall. It’s smaller than a smallgrape, being only about 0.4 inches (1 cm) indiameter. What’s bulging is the lining of thecolon. High colon pressure pushes the colonlining through the colon’s muscle wall and ontoits outer surface. The colon has to generategreat force to move along undigested, hardand dry waste matter. Fiber keeps stool softand moist.

In societies where grains are refined andwhere fiber is scant, diverticulosis is rampant. To give you an idea of how widespreaddiverticulosis is, 50 percent to 70 percent of theelderly population has it. I can’t explain why afiber-conscious person like you developedextensive diverticulosis. I suppose there might

Diverticulosis

Rampant in the

Western World

be a genetic predisposition.Keep in mind that most people

with diverticulosis — 70 percent —never suffer a single symptom. If thediverticula become inflamed, thenthe condition is diverticulitis, andthat is painful. Pain usually arises in

the left, lower side of the abdomen, wheremost diverticula are found. People arefeverish, lose their appetite and feelnauseated, but they rarely vomit. With a moresevere attack, the temperature is quite high, and the abdomen becomes very tender.Sometimes an attack of diverticulitis is signaledby painless rectal bleeding.

Treatment involves resting the digestive tractby taking only clear fluids and antibiotics. Formore serious attacks, hospitalization withintravenous fluids and antibiotics is required. You may never face these possibilities. Mostpeople with diverticulosis never do. Yogurt willnot help.

The pamphlet on diverticulosis gives a morelengthy discussion ofthis topic. To order acopy, write: Dr.Donohue — No.502W, Box 536475,Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose acheck or moneyorder (no cash) for$4.75 U.S./$6Canada with therecipient’s printedname and address. Please allow fourweeks for delivery.

Will you talk some sense into him? — T.R.

ANSWER: Unless his doctor has told him notto do anything physical — and that would bemost unusual advice — your husband’sinactivity harms his heart. He needs dailyexercise, and a pacemaker isn’t a reason notto exercise. He can have his doctor verify this.Physical activity is one of the cornerstones ofheart health and is as important as cholesterolcontrol.

Walk into eyeglass-frame shops, and you’lllikely see a promotional poster to reassure you thattheir glasses will enhance your look. I rememberan ad that went something like this — “A face is

“Halloween Vision”Masquerade

like a work of art and should have a great frame.” Ihave to agree, especially at Halloween, when adultsand kids want a quick, artsy masquerade for a partyor a last-minute trick-or-treat costume. But youdon’t need to purchase frames for this idea. Justscout around for old pairs of sunglasses or findcheap plastic frames in your kids’ dress-up box. You’ll also need craft items and a bottle ofhousehold glue.

So what’s your “vision” for a character you’dlike to be? Here are ideas to get you started forlast-minute one-of-a-kind looks for all ages:

BIRD GLASSESGlue craft feathers in bright colors around the

top outside edges of the glasses. Glue more featherson some twine or yarn, then attach to the rims andlet them dangle.

DINOSAUR OR IMAGINATIVE CREATUREGLASSES

Draw a wacky reptile-like foreheaddesign on thick green or brown craftfoam sheet or poster board. Add scaleswith markers. Glue to the top rim of apair of matching-color glasses.

CLOWN GLASSESGlue a big pom-pom to the bridge.

Decorate the top of the rim with star-shape stickers or cut out your ownfrom foam sheets using tiny starcookie cutters for a pattern.

GOOF-OFF GLASSESFind silly items to decorate the

entire frame. Black-and-white googlyeyes make for a funny lookanyone can wear.

Note: When decorating theglasses, be sure items don’tobscure your vision.

Taco Bell DogsQ: I have five different Taco Bell dogs, and I am cu-

rious if they are worth anything. — Madeline, Marion,Ind.

A: During the autumn of 1997, Taco Bell began anadvertising campaign that featured a Chihuahua dognamed Dinky and voiceovers by Carlos Alazaqui. Dinkywas eventually replaced by a second dog, Gidget. Thecampaign was such a hit, toys depicting the dogs wereproduced as advertising premiums. A quick check ofeBay revealed dozens of Taco Bell toy dogs, most pricedin the $10 to $15 range.

A: The Anchor Pottery Company operated in Tren-ton from 1893 until 1926. From what I can determine, the company produced a line that included dinner setsand toile sets. Your pieces appear to be a mix of thetwo. For a brief history of the company, I recommendLehner’s Encyclopedia of U.S. Marks on Pottery, Por-celain & Clay by Lois Lehner (Collectors Books,$24.95). This reference is comprehensive and absolutelyessential.

ScammersGet Creative

Scammers never go away. They just get morecreative in their methods of getting you to part withyour money. Here’s a sampling of current scamsto watch out for:

—Scareware: Scam software that gets into yourcomputer and makes you believe your machine hasa virus. You’ll be notified with an urgent popupscreen that says you need to download certain anti-virus software immediately or your computer willbe in danger. The real danger is that you’ll fall forit and download (and pay for) the suggested soft-ware to fix the nonexistent problem.

—Foreign lotteries: If you get a call sayingyou’ve won a foreign lottery, hang up. One, youlikely didn’t enter the lottery, and two, you surelydidn’t give them your phone number. The scamcomes in when you’re told that you need to payfees in advance for various reasons.

—Charity scams: Anytime there’s a disaster, thescammers will hit you up for donations to help thevictims. Many people would genuinely like to help,

but beware who you give your dollars to. The moreemotional the request for money, the more likelyit is to be a scam. Stick with the big names such asthe Red Cross or The Salvation Army if you wantto respond to a disaster.

—Auctions: Foreclosed properties and seizedcars have big scam potential. The ads make itsound like you can pick up a house for only a fewthousand dollars or a vehicle for a few hundred. The scam comes when you’re asked to buy a guideto all the foreclosed properties and seized vehiclesin your area. The guides aren’t cheap. If you givethem your credit-card number, you’ve given themfree license to charge more things to your card.To explore genuine foreclosed properties, startwith the government’s Housing and Urban Devel-opment Web site at www.hud.gov.

—Census: The 2010 Census has plenty of op-portunities for scams, and some have already sur-faced. At this point, census takers are verifyingaddresses only. If someone appears at your doorsaying they’re from the Census and asking for in-formation that includes your Social Security num-ber or bank information, it’s a scam. Also bewareof e-mail supposedly from the Census: You willnot be contacted that way.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answerreader questions, but will incorporate them into his columnwhenever possible. Write to him in care of King FeaturesWeekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475,or send e-mail to [email protected].

You can fight breast cancer, heart disease, weight gain and

more-with vitamin D.

How to get the most out this miracle nutrient:You may already know that vitamin D can help build

strong teeth and bones, but wait until you hear what else itcan do for the rest of your body. D can keep you trim, boostyour mood, ward off sniffles, and drastically cut your risk ofcancer and more. That’s great news, right? Yes, except for one huge problem: astartling report found that more than a third of all women failto get enough D for healthy bones-and more than 75 percentof us lack the higher amounts needed for the vitamin to do itsdisease-fighting best.Downing a daily glass of milk is a smart way to get more D.But the most significant source is sunlight, and that’s wherethe trouble lies. Our bodies produce D with exposure to ul-traviolet radiation, but as we’ve gotten smarter about dodg-ing skin cancer staying out of the sun and slathering ourselveswith mega-SPF sun block, our vitamin D levels have plum-meted. Fortunately, there are smart and safe ways to boostyour intake while you enjoy all the benefits that vitamin Dcan deliver

LOWER YOUR RISK OF CANCERVitamin D may substantially cut the risk of breast, co-

lon, prostate, and ovarian cancers, according to a growingbody of research. Women with D blood levels that were morethan double the current national average of 25 nonograms permilliliter (ng/ml) had a 50% lower risk of breast cancer thanthose with the lowest blood levels. Scientists believe that Dhelps regulate genes in a way that protects healthy cells andstops the growth of cancerous ones.

There are receptors for vitamin D in virtually all thebody’s cells, and to “feed” them you need and adequate bloodlevel of the vitamin. That depends not only on how muchtime you spend outside and what you eat but also on whereyou live. People living at higher latitudes, for example, soakup fewer DVB rays from November through March, whichmeans they’re more likely to have low blood levels of vita-min D and a higher risk of cancer. In fact, studies have showntwice as many colon cancer deaths and 50% more breast can-cer deaths in the far North compared with the sunnier South. So how much sun is enough to lower the risk of cancer with-out upping your risk of skin damage?

HOW TO GET THE “SUNSHINE VITAMIN” -SAFELYFor each minute that you spend in peak summer sun-

light, your body can produce about 1,000 IU of vitamin D.By comparison, you’d have to drink 10 eight-ounceglasses of milk to get that much. In short, a little UV expo-sure can go a long way. Follow these rules to stay safe whileyou’re getting some sun.

Time it right. If you have a fair complexion, you’ll needjust 5 to 10 minutes of sunshine on your arms, legs, or back-without sunscreen (yes, it shuts down the production of vita-min D)-between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. three days a week. Womenwho have medium skin tones may need 15 to 20 minutes;exposure, and darker-skinned women may need up to 30 min-utes’ worth. And remember: do use a sunscreen of SPF 30 orhigher on your face and wear a wide-brimmed hat, especiallyif you’re going to be outside for any length of time.

Multitask. Get your vitamin D while running your er-rands-walking into and out of stores, driving with the win-dow down on sunny days, working in your garden, walkingyour dog.

Be extra careful. If you have had skin cancer or have afamily history of the disease, ask your doctor for recommen-dations tailored to you. Sun exposure may be a health risk.

FIGHT OFF WINTER WEIGHT GAINCold weather may seem a long way off right now, but

more indoor time and fewer hours of sunlight can lead to adecrease in D production for many women. Researchers think

that may explain why some women bulk up a bit when thetemps fall: Low levels of D can cause a dip in leptin, a hor-mone that regulates appetite. When this happens, your brainmay not send the signal that you’re full and should stop eat-ing. Overweight women are especially at risk because ex-cess fat can absorb vitamin D, making it unavailable to thebody.

SAFEGUARD YOUR HEALTHY HEARTVitamin D I thought o help lower blood pressure and

regulate hormones that affect blood vessels and muscles ofthe heart. Studies suggest that people with the highest D lev-els may have up to a 50% lower risk of heart disease. Andresearchers from Harvard Medical School reported a 62%increased risk of heart attacks or strokes among adults withthe lowest blood levels of vitamin D, compared with thosewho have the highest levels of D.

SAY GOOD-BYE TO SEASONAL BLUESLow vitamin D levels may be linked to yet another win-

ter bummer: seasonal affective disorder, a type of depressionthat is more common in northern states. Researchers believethat vitamin D helps keep the brain flush with the “happyhormone,”serotonin, which plays a critical role in regulating mood.

BOOST YOUR DEFENSE AGAINST COLDS AND FLUResearch show that colds and the flu are worse when

vitamin D levels decline, and they tend to hit hardest in coun-tries at higher latitudes, where D levels tent to be lowest. Soshould we pitch out the C and hail the “sunshine vitamin” asthe cure for the common cold? Experts aren’t making thatclaim just yet, but there’s compelling evidence that keepingyour D level high may slash your chance of picking up thebug that’s going around the office. In one study, women whotook 800 IU of vitamin D daily were three times less likelyto develop colds or the flu-and those who popped 2,000 IUreported even fewer symptoms. Small wonder the scientistshave stared call D the “antibiotic vitamin.”

PREVENT AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERSVitamin D seems to interact in a protective way with

genes that raise the risk for diseases like multiple sclerosis(MS), a debilitating nerve illness that strikes mostly youngwomen.

BUILD STRONGER BONESThe work that D does with calcium to keep bones health

may be old news, but it’s no less important, especially forwomen. Osteoporosis and fractures due to bone weaknessstrike up to half of all females, according to the NationalOsteoporosis Foundation , and loading up on calcium-richfoods may not help much if you’re D deficient. The nutrienthelps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus, mineralthat enhance bone strength. A supplement can help: A re-cent study found that, regardless of their calcium intake, women who added 482 to 770 IU of vitamin D slashed theirrisk of fractures by up to 20%.

The weather’s beginning to cool, and thatmeans it’s time to start preparing the yard forwinter. Even if you live in warmer climes, thechange of season brings changes to yourlawn, such as slower growth. Anticipating andpreparing for this change will keep your yardhealthy year-round.

If you live in a part of the country that seessnow, it’s time to clean and put away lawnfurniture (except perhaps cedar furniture, which improves as it weathers). Store it in a

Fall Lawn Care

By Samantha Mazzotta

place that is protected from water andextreme cold — such as a tool shed or a cornerof the garage — and cover to protect fromspills and dirt.

Wait until most of the leaves have fallen fromthe trees before raking them up — it’s no usetrying to catch them early — and add to themulch pile.

Your lawn will probably need one or twomowings before winter sets in, but once thatlast session is done, lay out your gardening toolsin the driveway and inspect them for damage.Clean away bits of grass and dirt from theblades and handles, and coat blades with anall-purpose lubricant like 3-in-1 oil. Woodenhandles could use a thin coat of linseed oil, orat least make sure they’re clean and dry.

Hang gardening tools vertically to store them(a pegboard with hooks is a good investmenthere). Prepare your lawnmower by drainingthe gas (store in a proper container away from

other chemicals and heat sources), removingthe spark plug, cleaning the underside andoiling the blades, and placing in a dry, out-of-the-way corner.

Now is a good time to dethatch and reseedbare spots in the lawn, just before the first hardfrost. Cover the reseeded area with a lightmulch mixture of dry grass clippings, straw andshredded leaves — enough to keep birds fromeating most of the seeds, while allowing shootsto poke through come spring.

HOME TIP: Plant bulbs (like tulips)

now, before the first frost. They’ll

remain dormant until spring.
