• The oldest man in the United States is GeorgeFrancis, who was born on June 6, 1896, whichmeans he was already nearly 50 years old whenD-Day occurred. In an interesting coincidence, the United Kingdom’s oldest man, HenryAllingham, is also 112 years old — and was bornon the exact same day of the exact same year.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: When I’m staying in arental home at the coast, where is the best placefor my dog, “Riley,” to stay: the rental home or akennel close by? — Todd Y., Neotsu, Ore.

DEAR TODD: If you’re bringing your dog onvacation with you (which is fantastic, by the way),

Vacation Home or Kennel?By Sam Mazzotta

41 SE Wyoming Blvd • Casper, WY 82609The Cookery Restaurant

he should stay with you if at all possible. A kenneltends to be a stressful place for dogs, even if youcome to pick him up every day. If you’revacationing in an unfamiliar place, you may notknow how well the kennel is run, if the dogs thatstay there are kept healthy and happy, and ifillnesses like kennel cough are kept to a minimum.

Riley will benefit from his owner being with himin an unfamiliar place, particularly at night. So,Riley should stay with you. If you’re bringing himon vacation, he should experience the vacation withyou.

A caveat, however: always get clearance fromthe rental home’s owner before bringing a pet.Vacation-rental agreements often stipulate that nopets are allowed in the house. This happens, sadly, because not all pet owners control their pets, anddamage can be done to the rental property.

Many rentals that allow pets will charge an extrafee, sometimes per pet, to cover any potentialdamages. The fee is usually nonrefundable — butin my experience it’s much cheaper than the costof keeping your pet in a reputable kennel.

If the vacation rental you’re considering doesnot allow pets, look for another house in the area.Several sites on the Internet list pet-friendly rentals, including Oregon.com (http://www.oregon.com/lodging/pet_friendly.cfm); HomeAway.com (http://www.homeaway.com/index.cfm/tgt/oregon-pet-friendly-vacation-rentals); and DogFriendly.com(http://www.dogfriendly.com/server/travel/guides/us/usstateOR.shtml).

Q: I have three lunchboxes, all from the 1960s. Ihave been offered $150 for the three and wonder if Ishould hold out for more. — Susan, Lexington, Ky.

A: What you should do is consult a good price guide.I will share a little story with you that will illustrate mypoint. Last year, a Rocky and Bullwinkle prototypelunchbox was offered on eBay listed for a mere $185.A lucky collector snapped it up for that price, since it isan extremely rare item and worth at least $3,000. Sobefore offering anything for sale, you should do someresearch to avoid costly mistakes.

Although there are several excellent guides, I espe-cially like Warman’s Lunch Boxes Field Guide: Val-ues and Identification, by Joe Soucy (Krause, $12.99).It documents more than 500 metal lunchboxes and

Lunchboxes

bottles in an easy-to-use format. If you have a lunchboxthat was manufactured during the past 45 years, this ref-erence will provide anecdotal information and up-to-datepricing, especially for television, movie and cartoon-character issues.

• • •Q: I have an original 45-rpm recording of

John Kennedy’s inauguration speech. On theflip side is a dinner speech. It is in mint condi-tion, and I am curious about how much it mightbe worth. — Gary, Fort Gay, W.Va.

A: Your recording is worth about $10. Fora second opinion, contact one of the betternational dealers, the Music Connection, 1711South Willow St., Manchester, NH 03103. Asa courtesy, always enclose a self-addressed,stamped envelope when contacting experts ordealers mentioned in my column.

• • •Q: I have a set of dishes that were designed

by Sascha Brastoff sometime during the 1950sor ’60s. I have had them packed away for al-most 50 years. I would like to get an appraisal.— Bessie, Summerdale, Ala.

A: To find an appraiser in your region, visit the Websites appraisers.org and appraisersassoc.org. If you sus-pect your dishes are valuable, paying for an appraisalis a smart thing to do.

Hendrick Motorsports, celebrating its 25th anniver-sary this year, is NASCAR’s most successful contem-porary team.

Owner Rick Hendrick, one of the nation’s leadingautomobile dealers in addition to his racing success, will field four Sprint Cup teams this year, employingfour drivers — Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, DaleEarnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin — who have combinedfor seven championships and 174 victories.

Though Hendrick is NASCAR’s gold-standard team, the prevailing metal this year is silver. Employees lov-ingly restored a 1989 Chevy Lumina, made it a good-deal slicker than an ’89 Lumina ever was, gave it asilver sheen and presented owner Rick Hendrick withanother valuable exhibit for his museum/gift shop.

Hendrick founded the organization in 1984 with fiveemployees and 5,000 square feet of rented workspace.

HendrickMotorsports:

25 Years of Excellence

Today, more than 500 people work on the more than100-acre campus in Concord, N.C. Hendrick’s teamshave scored at least one win for 23 consecutive sea-sons. In its 25 years, Hendrick Motorsports has aver-aged 1.4 top-10 finishes per race and seven wins perseason.

The operative word at Hendrick Motorsports is self-assurance. Two years ago,its four drivers combinedto win half the races.Johnson has won the lastthree championships.Counting NASCAR’sthree major touring series,Hendrick has collected 12championships in its his-tory.

If you’re keeping ascorecard at home, that’seight Cup (five Winston, two Nextel, one Sprint),three Craftsman (nowCamping World) Truckand one Busch (now Na-tionwide) title.

In other words, with thatthat kind of record, if theyweren’t smug, they’d bedisingenuous.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What are thesymptoms of colon cancer? Are there any?— B.P.

ANSWER: The colon is about 5 feet long. Itbegins in the lower-right side of the abdomen, ascends on the right to just below the liver, crosses over the abdomen to the left side andthen descends to the rectum.

Symptoms of colon cancer depend wherethe cancer is located. Cancers on the rightside often cause open sores that bleed. Sinceit takes a while for undigested food to reachthe rectum from the right side of the colon,

the blood often is seen astarry, black stool.Cancers of the section ofcolon that spans theupper part of theabdomen from the rightto the left sides cancause obstruction of thebowel. Cancers of the

left side of the colon, the most common sitefor colon cancer, can lead to narrow stools, cause stomach cramps and discharge bright-red blood into the stool. Weight loss is a sign ofcolon cancer, regardless of its site.

Don’t wait for symptoms to check for coloncancer. This cancer has a number of excellentscreening tests, and it can be detected early, when it’s treatable and curable. Everyone atage 50 should have a colonoscopic exam, ascope exam of the colon. The examiningdoctor sees every inch of the colon and spotsany cancer or any polyps, the precursors ofcolon cancer. X-rays called double-contrastbarium enemas are another way of detectingcolon cancer.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have a serious

problem. I say “serious” because I have had adoctor laugh at me for asking the followingquestion, for which, incidentally, I paid $25. Forabout six years, I can hear my heartbeat loudlyin my left ear. No one can tell me why. I hear it24/7. I am about to lose my sanity. I pray youcan help. — D.M.

ANSWER: Lots of people hear their heartbeatin one or both ears. The condition is calledpulsatile tinnitus. One of the biggest causes forit is artery hardening, something that comeswith age. Blood flowing through less flexiblearteries near the ear becomes noisy. Peoplehear their own heartbeat.

Caffeinated beverages make the beatinglouder. Put a radio at your bedside and tune itto soothing music at night. The music can oftenmuffle the heartbeat sound. If music doesn’twork, then turn the radio to a location where

you hear static. Static often gets rid of theheartbeat noise. Sometimes changing thehead position abolishes the beating sound.

A few rare conditions produce pulsatiletinnitus — a narrowed neck artery, an artery-vein malformation, a damaged aortic heartvalve and high blood pressure are examples.I would guess these conditions would havebeen discovered in the six years you have hadthe problem.
