Well, come on in to EZ Cash!

DEAR HAMMER: I hope this tipwill be useful to some of your read-ers. I’m a die-hard do-it-yourselfer,and every spare moment I’m find-ing something else to do around thehouse. I also don’t like to putteraround too much when I start aproject, so I keep a lot of thingsorganized where I can grab themand get going.

For painting, there is a metalshelf unit in my garage where usedand new paint cans, brushes, roll-ers and pans are kept. Whenevermy wife retires a set of bedsheets, Ifold up the flat sheets in a box onthe shelf to use as dropcloths. I alsokeep a filter mask and goggles, abox of disposable rubber gloves, anold flannel shirt and a pair of oldsneakers in that box. So all I haveto do is grab that box, the paint Ineed and brushes, and I’m readyto go.

Painter’s tape is also good formore than just masking-off areas.Since I usually have to removesocket and light switch covers inorder to paint the walls, I stick thesmall screws that attach them to apiece of painter’s tape and then putthat tape on the back of the cover.

Hope your readers will get someorganizing ideas from this! —Jared in Unionville, Conn.

DEAR JARED: Great tips, andmany thanks for sharing them. Asyou can see, organizing a DIY-friendly garage or storage areadoesn’t mean you need to havestrict categories and neat shelves.Things can be grouped in certainareas — such as painting suppliesor lawn-care tools — and placedin containers that are easy to graband take to the work area.

Readers, do you have organiz-ing tips you’d like toshare? Pass them on!

HOME TIP: Whenpainting a masonry orwood walkway, mixfine sand into the paint. The sand will provideadded traction whenthe walkway is wet.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: You mentioned

a solution to prevent swimmer’s ear. How

do you apply it? — J.R.

ANSWER: The mixture is made with

equal parts white vinegar and rubbing

alcohol. The alcohol keeps the ear dry.

The vinegar prevents proliferation of

harmful bacteria. One or two drops are

instilled in the ear with a dropper and

allowed to stay in place for half a minute

to a minute. The head is then tilted

toward the shoulder to empty the ear

canal.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have been

diagnosed with congestive heart failure.

Three months after the diagnosis, I

Here’s a Solution

for Swimmer’s Ear

began to become fatigued after slight

exertion, and was short of breath. I’ve

had to have a pacemaker implanted.

I was told I probably have amyloidosis,

the senile form. Is there any hope of my

living a near-normal life? — L.M.

ANSWER: Amyloid is a protein

produced by bone marrow cells. It can

infiltrate a number of body organs.

Many forms (20) of amyloidosis exist,

and they all have distinctive longevity

projections. Senile amyloidosis does not

affect as many organs as do the other

forms of this illness, so that is one thing

in your favor. In this illness, when the

amount of amyloid in the heart is great,

the heart’s pumping action falters, and

congestive heart failure is a

consequence. Amyloid deposits often

interfere with the generation and

transmission of the electric signals that

regulate heartbeats, so a pacemaker

can be needed.

I can’t give you a prediction about

the length of life. Of course, your life

span is bound to be affected, but how

greatly, no one can tell with

certainty.

Lifestyle, physical activity

and diet can all be important

in limiting how serious

congestive heart failure can

become. To learn more, order

the congestive heart failure

booklet by writing to: Dr.

Donohue — No. 103W, Box

and address. Please allow

four weeks for delivery.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: In my 58 years,

I never have had any problem with my

scalp. My hair has turned a salt-and-

pepper color. Due to vanity, I have

been coloring it for the past several

years. I have never experienced any

problems. Recently I have had a rash

of pimples forming on my scalp at the

hair shaft. They hurt when the scalp is

touched or the hair brushed.

I had a good friend look at my scalp

with a magnifying glass, and he says

they look like small pimples. He

removed a hair with tweezers and a

small discharge came out of the

pimple. I am considering letting my hair

grow back to its natural color to see if

the dye has anything to do with this.

Any suggestions? — N.N.

ANSWER: I like your approach. The

dye might be irritating your scalp, and

the hair follicles might have become

infected secondary to the irritation. If

things don’t clear up after going

dyeless for a couple of months, have a

doctor take a look. You might need an

antibiotic prescription.

“Impeached: The Trial of President AndrewJohnson and the Fight for Lincoln’s Legacy”

by David O. Stewart(Simon & Schuster, $27)Reviewed by Larry Cox

The impeachment of President Andrew Johnson in 1868was one of the most turbulent events in American history.

Johnson, the man who succeeded President AbrahamLincoln, was born in Raleigh, N.C., in 1808. Despite hispoor education, he was elected to the Tennessee legislaturein 1835 and advanced to the state senate six years later. After serving as governor of Tennessee, he found himselfpaired with Lincoln on the Republican ticket in 1865.

Johnson was a Democrat who, following Lincoln’s death, proposed a series of conciliatory policies that he hoped

would help reunite the fractured country. His attempt tofollow Lincoln’s plan of extending a hand of friendshipand reconciliation to the vanquished South fell apart, mainlybecause of his timidity. Since both houses of the U.S. Con-gress were controlled by vengeful Republicans, he was soonensnarled in a political mess.

David O. Stewart, author of the bestseller “The Sum-mer of 1787: The Men Who Invented the Constitution,”sorts out the little-understood and ill-defined aspects ofimpeachment as it was in Johnson’s era and is in the present.Stewart, a trial lawyer for more than 25 years, clears thelegal brush as he reveals that impeachment is an institu-

tional safety value and that it worked as the framers of theConstitution had hoped it would.

With the expertise of a lawyer and the insight of a his-torian, Stewart brings this incredible period of history intosharp focus. He challenges many of the traditional ver-sions of the event. For example, Stewart is convinced thatJohnson wasn’t a victim and that his impeachment wasprobably deserved. He concludes that it produced a peace-ful resolution and probably prevented a second Civil War,and since Johnson was eventually acquitted by one vote, italso avoided sapping the power of future presidents.

Consistency Pays Off for Matt Crafton

July9 - 15, 2009

One of this season’s mild surpriseshas been the emergence of MattCrafton as a title contender in

NASCAR’s Camping World Truck Series.Crafton, who drives the No. 88 Menards Chevrolet, has finished

outside the top 15 only five times in 29 races since winning for thefirst time at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in May 2008.

Consistency has been the 33-year-old driver’s distinguishing virtuethis year, which is why Crafton ranks second, only 36 points behindRon Hornaday Jr., in the point standings. Prior to Hornaday’s Mil-waukee victory, Crafton led the standings. He’s finished in the top 10in eight of the series’ 10 races.

Yet, in Crafton’s career, he has won only once in 207 attempts.“It’s hard to believe,” he said. “It’s hard to get wins in the Truck

Series and to have only one after running as well as we have the pasttwo years ... it took so long to get that one. It’s not every day you get atruck as good as we had there (at Texas, where he finished second)and not be able to win it.”

“They’ve got that team in position to get some more wins,” saidRay Dunlap, part of Speed’s telecast team. “I wouldn’t be surprised tosee Crafton win another race or two this season. They’re definitelydue. ... There are a lot of tracks coming up soon where they could doreally well.”

But Crafton, from Tulare, Calif., knows the championship race fa-vors those who are consistent.

“We’ve got to do what we’ve been doing allyear and put ourselves in contention and not doanything ridiculous,” he said. “That’s how youwin races and championships.

“It’s the team working together. It takespeople a while to jell. My crew chief, BudHaefele, had never ‘crew chiefed’ at this leveland ... the guys had to build this up — buildnew trucks and make them better each and ev-ery time. We ran well before, but not great likethe last couple of years.”

Unlike most Truck Series teams, ThorSport(owned by Duke Thorson) bases its operationin Ohio. The great majority of teams inNASCAR’s three major touring series are head-quartered in the Charlotte, N.C., area.

“I see advantages,” Crafton said. “It’s hon-estly a benefit to be where we are.”

Financial Advice forNew Parents

Typical costs for a new baby can run between$11,000 and $16,000 for the first year. By the timethe child turns 18, you’ll have spent more than$200,000. If you’re thinking of starting a family butthe state of the economy makes you hesitate, “TheWall Street Journal Financial Guidebook for NewParents” by Stacey L. Bradford (Three Rivers Press,$14.95) offers many how-to ideas and suggestions.

Here are some highlights:• Maternity leave. If you work, learn the specifics

of you company’s maternity- or paternity-leavepolicy. It might not be what you expect. If you as-sume you’ll automatically get a certain amount oftime off with disability payments, and you end upwith no salary at all, you need to know that in ad-vance. The size of the company dictates what it’sobligated to give you — if anything. The Guidebooktells you your rights.

• Health-care costs. Health insurance and medicalcare can be two of the biggest expenses you’ll have. The Guidebook explores both flexible spending ac-counts and health savings accounts. It’s possible, forexample, to set up a FSA with pre-tax dollars to payfor day care once you go back to work.

• Saving for college while you save for your ownretirement. Rule of thumb: The kids can take outschool loans, but you’ll need money in place for re-tirement.

• Work versus day care. Is it really cheaper to giveup your job and stay home to save on child-care costs?According to the Guidebook, day care could cost youupward of $30,000 per year, depending where youlive, but if you don’t keep working you’ll also begiving up benefits, including a retirement plan. Andwhat about when youwant to return to workbut can’t get back at thesame salary level aswhen you left?

• Money-saving tipsfor every stage of yourchild’s life. From makinga will and setting up aguardian in case some-thing happens to you, tothe real costs of movingto the suburbs to savemoney and the differ-ences between a baby sit-ter and an au pair — it’sall there.

Flea-Fighting PlantsBy Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Just acomment on your column aboutthe woman who has cats withfleas. There’s a prevention I heardof years ago that might be helpful.Someone told me that eucalyptuswill repel fleas. I bought a largespray of it and put it in a vase onthe floor, near the couch wheremy dogs lounge.

My dogs (five of them throughthe years) never had a problemwith fleas, despite having long, thick coats. They were outdoors alot and socialized with other dogs,so there was ample opportunityfor them to become infested.

Another person told me shegrew eucalyptus in the garden, which was near where her dogplayed in the yard, and she hadno problem with fleas, either.

Using eucalyptus might give petowners an advantage over the fleaproblem and eliminate some of thecare, concern and vet visits. —K.H.S., Fairport, N.Y.

DEAR K.H.S.: You know, I hadn’tbrought up using plants as a flearepellent, but it is well worth a try. This plant can be purchased atgarden centers or home-improvement stores, fully grown oras seeds.

As with any new plant, don’t letyour pets eat it — eucalyptus maybe toxic to dogs and cats, so placeit out of reach or fence-off gardenareas that have it.

Other flea-fighting plants includelavender and mint, so consideradding these to your kitchengarden or placing around thehouse.

If you like to toil in your lawn andgarden, then you may have workedwith stone and used it in yourlandscape. Stone comes in all types, shapes and sizes and can be used inany number of ways from buildingborders and retaining walls to creatingpaths and patios.

Stone comes in many types, and theselection in your area will probably

Stone In The GardenBy Tresa Erickson

depend upon the geology. Commontypes include limestone, sandstone andgranite. The stone can be left as foundor cut into specific shapes and sizes. Forinformal landscape designs, you willprobably want to use uncut stone, whereas for more formal designs, you willprobably want to use cut stone.

The smoother and flatter the stone, thebetter suited it will be for paved areas.Flat stones three inches thick or less areusually referred to as flagstone. Thesework well for patios and pathways andmay be placed on mortar or soil.

There are many other types of stoneavailable, each of which may be moresuitable for a particular project. Glacierstones, for example, are round and workwell for water gardens and borders, while boulders can be quite large andmake great features. River rock or gravelworks well in water features and paths.

Depending upon where you live, theremay be a number of places where youcan shop for stone for your garden. When looking at stone, wear heavyshoes and keep an eye out for spidersand snakes, both of which like to hide instone crevices. Keep in mind that stone

is typically sold by the piece or palletbased on weight.

You may load and transport the stoneyourself or pay for the business to do it. Ifyou don’t have a truck, the latter maybe preferable. If the stone is extremelyheavy, you may also want to rent someequipment or hire someone to move itfor you in your landscape.

Stone can make a wonderful additionto any lawn and garden. Just make sureyou do your homework, select the rightstone for your project and shop aroundfor the best deal.

Q: I have an alabaster hanging light fixtureand would like to find someone who can adviseme about its value. — Irene, Lombard, Ill.

A: Period light fixtures have become

Light Fixture

extremely collectible in recent years due in nosmall part to the current trend to renovate andrestore older houses. The companies of bothTiffany and Handel became famous for theirbeautiful bases and leaded shades.Decorators and collectors rediscovered thebeauty of many of these lamps and fixturesduring the last three decades of the pastcentury, and this increased interest pushedprices upward.

A table lamp with a wisteria shade signedby “A. Hart” that was purchased in 1980 for$300 recently sold at auction for more than

$25,000. Many of the classic hanging shadesfrom the 1920s and ’30s currently retail in the$350 to $850 range, depending on condition, design and desirability. Not all older fixtures aredesirable.

To find out if you have a true collector’s item,it is necessary to contact an expert orestablished dealer in your area. ReflectionAntiques is one of the better shops in theChicago area. The contact information is 2428North Ashland Ave., Chicago, IL 60614; and773-871-7078.

A study released by the National Research Councilconcluded there just wasn’t enough data to determinewhether those living at Camp Lejeune were harmed bychemicals in the drinking water. Although the waterwas laced with industrial solvents that leaked from anearby dry cleaner from the 1950s to 1985 and con-taminated the water supply at multiple base housingsites where it was used by a million people for cook-ing, drinking and bathing, the NRC apparently couldn’tdecide.

Study Inconclusive onCamp Lejune Water

The report goes on to say that any further study is“unlikely to determine conclusively whether CampLejeune residents were adversely affected by exposureto water contaminants” and that even if the Agency forToxic Substances and Diseases Registry goes ahead withits planned research, “the outcome of the efforts is un-likely to determine conclusively whether Camp Lejeuneresidents were adversely affected by exposure to watercontaminants.”

As in, don’t bother? As in, just take the NRC’s wordfor it and stop looking?

Not everyone is playing along, however.Senator Kay Hagen, a newly elected senator from

North Carolina, is hot under the collar about this. Spe-cifically, she says on her Web site that the NRC reportwas just a rehash of prior studies, and it left out researchthat concluded that there is a link between VOCs (vola-tile organic compounds) and childhood leukemia andother adverse health issues. The report, she says, doesn’teven mention Benzene or vinyl chloride (found in theCamp Lejeune water), nor the links between those and

adverse health. In April the director of the Agency for Toxic Sub-

stances and Disease Registry said it couldn’t stand be-hind a 1997 report that minimized the risks of cancersfrom all those chemicals because the report wasn’t ac-curate. The report was yanked from its Web site.
