Q: I have an original cartoon strip of “MoonMullins” signed and sent to me by Ferd Johnsonmore than 50 years ago. I would like to find out itsvalue. — Murray, Brooklyn, N.Y.

A: An organization that might be helpful is theNational Cartoonist Society, 341 North MaitlandAve., Suite 130, Maitland, FL 32751;[email protected]; www.reuben.org; and 407-647-8839. Original cartoon art has attracted theattention of serious collectors in recent years, andsome of the better strips have sold for record prices.

• • •Q: I have a 1972 second issue Christmas Carol

tankard issued by John Beswick Limited and theRoyal Doulton Group. I do not have its originalbox. Where can I find the value of this piece? —

Comic Strip

Toni, Surprise, Ariz.A: In excellent condition, your tankard would

retail for about $85. For a second opinion, youmight want to consult with The Royal DoultonInternational collectors Club, 701 Cottontail Lane,Somerset, NJ 08873; [email protected]; andwww.royal-doulton.com.

• • •Q: My grandma gave me a set of 1953 Blue

Willow china, setting for eight. How much is itworth? — Paul, Germania, W.Va.

A: That depends on who made the china, andwhen. One of the better references that might behelpful is Blue Willow: An Identification and ValueGuide by Mary Frank Gaston (Collector Books). Ifound several copies available at amazon.com forless than $10 each. Although this guide was pub-lished in 1990, I think with a slight adjustment ofprices upward it still reflects the marketplace.

Kyle Busch Is His Own ManMay 21 - 27, 2009

RICHMOND, Va. — Why is KyleBusch so good? That is, apart from hisobviously impressive skill level.

Busch is ambitious. He wants it all. He

races in every race he can. At Richmond, he didn’t just win on Saturday andSunday nights. He won at Southside Speedway on the previous Thursday night.

At age 24, he has 15 Sprint Cup victories, 24 in the Nationwide Series and 11in Trucks. That’s a total of 50. Busch’s mind is like a calculator. He’s concocted

the notion that maybe he can win 200 races in thethree series combined before he hangs up his helmet.

In one sense, it’s kind of meaningless. Richard Petty,of course, won 200 Cup races — and none in the lowerseries. Combining victories would be like countingthe Double-A home runs of a big-league catcher. Bythat standard, Crash Davis (Kevin Costner’s charac-ter in “Bull Durham”) would be in the Hall of Fame.

There’s something remarkable, though, in a manwho wants to achieve something no one else wantedto try. This is a kid who loves to race ... to an extentthat borders on the absurd.

Pull over! See those lights? That might be a dirttrack. Let me call my guy on the cell. Maybe he canhitch up the trailer and get my Late Model up here.

Busch is also absolutely unafraid of being himself. Many drivers are little more than cardboard cutouts. They hide behind the advice of handlers, resting theirassumption on the notion that, if they kiss up enough, nice things will be written about them.

The driver who has won 11 of NASCAR’s last 46races shares with the drivers of yore — Bobby Allison,Darrell Waltrip, Harry Gant, et al. — a thirst for com-petition. Busch didn’t grow up in Taylorsville, though. He grew up in Las Vegas. He has that trademark flairfor the dramatic. Why does he bow to the hostilemasses? He claimed Vegas had nothing to do with it.

Kyle Busch is gunning to beat Richard Petty’s record of 200 Cup victoriesby winning in three series combined. (Getty Images)

“I’m here to be myself, man,” Busch said in the wee hours of Sunday after theMay 2 Sprint Cup race. “I am who I am. Everybody is who they are, for what-ever reason. I don’t think it’s necessarily the way you’re raised or where you’reraised, or whatever. I just think what you believe in, what your beliefs are, whatall happens around you as you grow up and stuff.

“For me, it’s fun to come out here and, I guess, play the villain role some-times, and yet be liked other times. It’s always cool to have that aspect in thissport. Even if I wasn’t in this sport, you know, doing something else, you’ve gotto be happy with the way you’re living life anddoing what you’re doing. Otherwise, it’s notworth living or not worth doing what you’redoing.”

Kyle Busch is his own man in a world wherefew are at his age. His theme song ought to be“I Gotta Be Me.”

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I come from a family of six

girls, and I am the youngest. My five sisters all have

had gallstones and have had their gallbladders

removed. Am I doomed to the same fate?

My sisters are large-bodied. I’m not. Could their

weight have influenced gallstone formation? — E.H.

ANSWER: Family history of gallstones is a definitefactor in the risk of coming down with stones. Yourfamily proves the point. However, it’s not the solefactor, so you’re not doomed to having gallstones.

Obesity is a strong influence on stone formation. On that score, you’re in a safe zone.

A high-calorie, high-fat diet disposes a person togallstones.

Rapid weight loss is another factor that favors the

Genes Have a Hand

in Stone Formation

development of stones.Cholesterol is the mainconstituent of most gallstones.Rapid weight loss mobilizescholesterol from body storagedepots, and that’s why it canbring on gallstones.

Estrogen is anothercontributor to stones. It increases the uptake ofcholesterol from food, and it increases the amountof cholesterol in bile. Bile is made by the liver. It aidsin digesting fat. When bile becomes saturated withcholesterol, stones form.

You’re home clear on most of the things thatcontribute to stone formation. You’re not destinedto be a victim.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Some time

ago you had a recipe for a natural

laxative. I cut it out and used it, and it

worked. I stopped using it, but now I

need it again and I can’t find it. Would

you please, please repeat it? I am in

bad shape now. — R.K.

ANSWER: It’s not my recipe. I got itfrom someone else.

You mix 2 cups of bran with 2 cupsof applesauce and 1 cup ofunsweetened prune juice. Bran is thestuff removed from grains duringrefining. It’s great fiber. Fiber keepsundigested food moist as it movesthrough the digestive tract. You canbuy bran in health-food stores.

Refrigerate the mixture, and take 2or 3 tablespoons twice a day.

You can add any ingredient you

want to this mixture to make it more to your liking —fruits, nuts, raisins, whatever.

Constipation is endemic in countries whererefined grains are in vogue. The booklet on this topicis a discussion of how best to deal with it. Readerscan order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No.504W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclosea check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6Canada with the recipient’s printed name andaddress. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual

letters, but he will incorporate them in his column wheneverpossible. Readers may write him or request an order form ofavailable health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475.© 2008 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Kip” is really friendly and wouldn’t harma fly. When I take him out for walks he likes to go right up to people and some-times jumps up on them for a friendly pat. But last week, this woman yelled atme, telling me to watch out or she would call animal control! What was herproblem? — Keri in Worcester, Mass.

DEAR KERI: Honestly, the problem wasn’t hers — it’s yours. I’m sure Kip isa wonderful dog and just as friendly as you say. The trouble is, people on thestreet don’t know that. They just see a dog running up and jumping on them, andthey’re not sure of Kip’s intent.

A great many people are terrified of dogs, Keri. It’s no laughing matter, either— most of those who are fearful of dogs had some traumatic event in their past. But even if they don’t fear them, just the sight of a strange dog charging at themcan incite a fearful reaction.

It’s also an invasion of people’s privacy — their personal space — and justbad etiquette all around to allow your dog to jump on them.

As Kip’s owner, it’s your responsibility to control his behavior. The older hegets and the more he’s allowed to run up and jump on people, the harder it is totrain him out of it. And you need to train him out of this behavior, pronto.

I recommend that you sign up for behavior training classes as soon as pos-sible. Attend these sessions with Kip,listen closely to the instructor and fol-low his or her advice.

Remember that pets are a part of ourcommunity, and like every other mem-ber of a community they must followsome rules in order for everyone to getalong. It’s up to you to show Kip howto behave on his daily walks.

You’ve tended to your lawn and garden foryears, but now that the kids are older and yourschedule is jam-packed with their activities, you’re thinking that it might be time to hire alawn service. Rather than trying to squeeze insome yard work between soccer games, youcould sit back and relax with the kids while thelawn service crew takes care of those outsidechores for you.

Selecting a lawn care service is no differentthan selecting any other professional. You needto shop around and get recommendations fromfriends and family. You need to contact all po-tential candidates and ask about their qualifica-tions, experience, services, schedule and fees. You need to check out their references and findout what others have to say about the quality oftheir work.

As always, the cheapest or most expensiveservice is not necessarily the best. Do your home-work, and if possible, sign a year-round contract. That way, you won’t have to deal with rising feesdue to the rising cost of gas.

Make sure the services provided are listed inthe contract. That way, there will be no questionas to the types of work you expect. Perhaps youjust want the basics, mowing, edging, weed-eat-

ing and leaf-blowing. Perhaps you want more, including building maintenance and flowerbedplanting and planting. Get what you want spelledout in the contract.

Once the work on your yard begins, checkthings out and voice any concerns you have rightaway. Don’t wait three or four months before in-forming the crew you would rather they didn’ttrim your boxwoods. Let them know right awayand save them some hassle.

Be realistic in your expectations of the workdone. If your lawn and garden was not in goodcondition to begin with, don’t expect the crew topull it all together the second or third time theycome around. Getting your lawn and garden ingood condition will take time. Give the crew someleeway with temperature changes as well. Don’texpect them to pull off the impossible during adrought and have your lawn looking like a lushgolf course at a resort. They are not miracle work-ers.

Finding the right lawn service takes time. Don’trush the process, or you could end up workingwith someone you would rather not and the ten-sion could show up in your lawn and garden.
