The Beginner’s FlowerBy Tresa Erickson

You’ve never had much of a green thumb. You

mow the lawn, trim the hedges and sweep off the

walks, and that’s the extent of your gardening.

Lately, though, you’ve been remembering your

grandmother’s beautiful flower gardens and would

like to create one of your own. You’re definitely a

beginner and could use a flower that is easy to grow.

Daisies may be right up your alley.

There are many varieties of daisies. The two most

common are Shasta daisies, which are perennials,

and African daisies, which are annuals. If you want

something that will return season after season, Shasta daisies might be the better choice.

You can plant daisies right from the seed. Just select a spot in your yard with rich, well-

drained soil that receives full sun and plant the seed in the soil, following the instructions

on the packet. If you can’t find such a spot, don’t worry. Daisies are fairly hardy and can

tolerate less-than-ideal conditions. Once you have planted the seed, add some general-

purpose fertilizer early on and you’re all set to go.

Daisies in general require little care. Be sure you fertilize them once a month and water

them as needed. If you have planted perennial daisies, look for them to bloom the second

year. Once your daisies are established, you may need to separate them and replant

them. This will prevent overcrowding and keep them blooming beautifully.

Daisies are easy to grow and care for, making them perfect for beginning gardeners.

Give them a try this year. You’re sure to do well, and as your confidence grows, you can

add other types of flowers to your garden.

who recently experienced a breaking out on

my face and around my nose. Pimples came

up. My physician diagnosed it as rosacea. He

prescribed tetracycline and MetroGel

ointment. The area cleared up. I wonder if I

can stop taking the prescriptions. Perhaps you

might explain what rosacea is. — O.L.

ANSWER: Rosacea (rose-A-shuh) can

happen to anyone, but it particularly singles

out people who were or are prone to blush

easily. The tip of the nose, the cheeks and the

chin are the places where the skin stays red

and on which pimples break out. In time,

tangles of small blood vessels also appear on

those places. Without treatment, the nose can

become disfigured. For an image of end-stage

rosacea, think of the nose of W.C. Fields.

Eye involvement is an unappreciated aspect

of rosacea. The eyes feel gritty, water and

become bloodshot. In a few cases, the eyes

are the only manifestation of this disorder.

Most often, rosacea is a chronic illness

requiring chronic treatment. You can stop your

medicines if your doctor agrees. The worst that

can happen is that it will return.

Stay out of the sun, and always wear

sunscreen when going outside. Don’t drink

alcohol. Stay away from spicy foods. Hot

beverages encourage breakouts.

Contact the National Rosacea Society. The

society is more than willing to answer any

questions that might arise about rosacea. Its

toll-free number is 888-NO-BLUSH, and its Web

the shingles ever not

come to the surface? If

it is shingles, what is the

ANSWER: A rare form of shingles called zoster

sine herpete causes shingles pain without any

skin rash. Its diagnosis is difficult. Proof lies in

documenting a rise in antibodies to the

shingles virus. A blood specimen has to be

taken at the onset of the pain and again one

or two weeks later. If the level of antibodies

has risen, that’s evidence that shingles has

occurred without a rash.

How long have you been suffering from the

pain? Shingles pain that continues for more

than a month after the appearance of the

rash is postherpetic neuralgia and comes from

nerve damage. Even though you never had

a rash, if your pain has been going on for six

weeks, you might have postherpetic

neuralgia. The Lidocaine skin patch can often

alleviate this pain. Oral medicines like

amitriptyline, Neurontin and Lyrica are also

effective for some people.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. deals with hard times a great dealbetter than many of the fans who love him.

A cynic — or, perhaps, a marketer — could say thatthe slings and arrows fired at Junior ’s crew chief (andfirst cousin), Tony Eury Jr., are functional because theyaren’t blaming Earnhardt himself.

But Earnhardt isn’t a cynic or a marketer. He’s ashonest as anyone in NASCAR, which means that, whenhe’s asked about how honest he is, he replies by sayinghe’s pretty honest.

“I always try to be honest, and I’ve never really triedto intentionally lie to somebody, especially when itcomes to the media,” he said at Las Vegas MotorSpeedway. “But I have never said I was always rightabout everything.”

Earnhardt is 34. The Shelby 427 in Las Vegas washis 330th. He’s won 18 of them. Six of them were inthe same season, but that was five years ago.

Being the favorite driver of well over half the fansisn’t without its side effects. Last year, when he movedto Hendrick Motorsports after eight years with the teamhis father founded, Earnhardt improved. He made theChase after failing in two of the previous three years.Still, he only won once last year and has only threevictories in the last four seasons.

But Earnhardt isn’t afraid of the pressure. He’swilling to accept his share of the blame.

Asked about the criticism of his crew chief, Earnhardtwas up for a good-natured retort.

“Well heck, I’ve been getting most of it (criticism)here lately, so I told him, after Daytona, I’d done him abig old favor,” he said, “which is actually pretty good.Because when he’s not getting so much criticism, he’snot under so much pressure and I get what I hope is abetter race car.

“Maybe I should just keep doing things to get all thecriticism and give him a break, which is fine with me.”

There’s more fretting going on in Earnhardt Nationthan the real one.

Too Early to TellAbout Earnhardt

Oooh. He’s going to fall out of the top 35 in points.Oooh. He’s not going to make the Chase.Earnhardt’s not doing any of the “oohing.” His head

seems to be on straight. He’s had back-to-back bad races.So did Carl Edwards in last year’s Chase, and he finishedsecond in it.

Maybe Earnhardt will have a bad year, but that can’t

be concluded by the season’s first two races. It’s simplytoo soon to tell.

PICK OF THE WEEK

“Quantum of Solace” — Daniel Craig returns assuperspy James Bond in this sequel to “CasinoRoyale.” The film picks up right after the events atthe end of the previous movie, and we get aglimpse into 007’s past and a key to who he is as aman. The movie then kicks into gear concerning aplot to control the water rights of a Third Worldcountry. OK, not the most intriguing plot for a Bondflick, but they can’t all be about defusing nuclearbombs in underground lairs.

“Quantum” is a much darker and moodier filmthan “Casino Royale,” and some critics and Bondfans thought it didn’t live up to its predecessor. Ithink it worked well as the second act of a muchlonger film — a kind of “Casino Royale Part Deux.”So, if you liked “Casino Royale,” then I think you’llenjoy “Quantum,” if you think of it as a continuationof the previous film and not as a stand-aloneadventure.

FOR THE COMICS GEEK

“Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter andUnder the Hood” — This is a tie-in DVD release tothe “Watchmen” theatrical film. This DVD set isbasically two major set-pieces that were made forthe film but had to be cut for time. “Tales of theBlack Freighter” is an “animated comic book” of astory-within-a-story element of the originalWatchmen graphic novel. It’s a comic book aboutthe adventures of a pirate (voiced by Gerard Butlerof “300”), and his story mirrors the plot of theWatchmen movie/graphic novel. “Under TheHood” is a live-action film that provides the

“Andy Richter Controls the Universe: TheComplete Series” — Holy Moly. I feel like an angelhas been sent down from heaven to give me apuppy. I LOVED this show when it originally aired in2002, and I never thought it would ever be releasedon DVD. Fox didn’t know how to market a showthis original, so it kept changing its time slot fromweek to week. Then, after 19 episodes, it pulled theplug. “Andy Richter Controls the Universe” is oneof those smart, funny, well-written shows like“Arrested Development” and “30 Rock” that yousimply look forward to watching again and again.To try and describe this quirky, delightful show isalmost impossible. Just watch it — because youprobably missed it the firsttime around.

Here is a dish that will serve you well during Lentand some at your table won’t even know it is meat-less.

2 cups cooked mini lasagna noodles1 (8-ounce) can Hunt’s Tomato Sauce1 (15-ounce) can diced tomatoes, well drained1/2 cup finely chopped onion1/2 cup shredded carrots1/2 cup chopped zucchini1/4 cup chopped ripe olives1 tablespoon Splenda Granular1 1/2 teaspoons Italian seasoning1 cup fat-free cottage cheese3/4 cup (3 ounces) shredded Kraft 2 Percent Milk mozzarella cheese

Preheat oven to 375 F. Spray an 8-by-8-inch bak-ing dish with olive oil-flavored cooking spray. Ar-range lasagna noodles in prepared baking dish. In asmall bowl, combine tomato sauce, tomatoes, onion,carrots, zucchini, olives, Splenda and Italian season-ing. Spoon tomato mixture evenly over noodles.Spoon cottage cheese evenly over tomato sauce.Spoon mozzarella cheese over top. Bake for 40 to 45minutes. Place baking dish on wire rack and let setfor 5 minutes. Divide into 4 servings.

TIP: Usually 1 3/4 cups uncooked lasagna noodlescooks to about 2 cups.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am very disappointed by your light-heartedresponse to the letter written by Rod S. (“How to Correct a Pet Owner”). Youstart out by blaming the breed of the dog! As if all small dogs get ill-temperedand neurotic, excitable and energetic. Like that’s the issue at hand. It clearly isnot.

You went on to say that the dog’s owner has some issues, but that there are noclear signs of abuse or neglect. You’re wrong! Clearly there is abuse! You toldhim the best thing to do is lead by example. So by not telling his son to knock itoff and ignoring the real issues here is a good example?

You told him not to “preach” to his son. That’s about the only thing I agreedwith you on. Heck no, I wouldn’t preach either. I would tell him straight out he’swrong and if he keeps it up, I would take the dog and give it to someone whodoesn’t have dominance issues and the need to control.

Rod needs to “step-up” and tell his son just like it is. Be a real man, Rod!When something makes you uncomfortable and you think it’s wrong, then it mostlikely is. — Disappointed in New York

DEAR DISAPPOINTED: I wrote that the son’s “discipline” (flipping Junioron his back and scolding him) was a terrible way to correct a dog.

But we’ll have to agree to disagree on how the owner’s dad should approachthe situation. Confronting his grown son and making him angry could cause theson’s treatment of Junior to become worse, if he is in fact harming the dog. I amwith you on the possibility of abuse — Junior’s behavior is a big warning sign— but unfortunately there was no clear evidence given in the original letter.

You quite rightly point out that if something feels wrong, then it most likelyis. If the father feels this way, he needs to investigate further.
