If you know you'll need extra cash for the holidays, consider this: There is cash in clutter. By beginning now to unload the clutter, you can accomplish two things: getting rid of extras that could be stifling you, and mak-ing a little extra money.

Where's the clutter? It's potentially everywhere. Consider consigning clothing you haven't worn in

two years, and sell toys the children don't play with anymore. Have you done a lot of "retail therapy" either in stores or at yard sales, bringing home knick-knacks

you end up dusting every week? Old watches, musical instruments, iPods and mp3 players may have some value to someone else, especially for their parts. Sell duplicates of tools and stereo speakers.

If you have multiple computers, your old reject might be just the thing for someone else. The same goes for your older monitors and keyboards. If you've amassed a large collection of videos and DVDs (that no one ever watches anymore), sell them and clear up some space. The same goes for books and craft items or hobby supplies that looked ap-pealing when you bought them.

If you have far too many inherited items that you've kept out of a sense of obligation, consider whether it's time to let them go. For items that could be valu-

Cash In on Clutter

able, get an appraisal as to their worth. The biggest clutter sign of all is if you rent a stor-

age unit to hold the excesses of your life. If you've had that unit for more than six months and haven't visited it, that's a sure sign that you can live without the contents. Spend a few weekends going through the boxes you've stored to see what you can sell. Not only will you pocket the cash, but you might be able to downsize to a smaller unit if there are items you absolutely must store.

Even if you hire an online auction company to take care of the actual pricing, shipping and photography of your items, you'll come out ahead without having spent the time to micromanage online bids.

If you end up giving items to Goodwill or the Salva-tion Army, you can still net a financial gain in the form of charitable tax deductions. Use a computer program called "It's Deductible" to calculate the fair market value of what you donate.

PuzzleAnswers

This is very sneaky. If you go into the hospital and then have nursing-home care, Medicare might not pay for that care if you didn’t stay in the hos-pital long enough.

It seems that when you’re in the hospital, you might not actually be “in” the hospital as an admit-ted patient. You might be “observed,” which is not the same thing.

Sometimes a doctor will send you to the hospi-tal, and you’ll be observed for a day or two to see if you should really be admitted.

It seems that a criteria program called InterQual makes decisions about this. Its web page says that InterQual is “the undisputed gold standard in evi-dence-based clinical decision support.” Isn’t that nice. Whatever happened to our doctors deciding how sick we are?

And how do you know what your status is? You have to ask. Theoretically, you could stay in observation mode for weeks and never actually be admitted. Medicare considers that to be outpatient care, and it won’t pay for all you get while you’re in the hospital.

Any nursing-home care you need after that won’t be paid for by Medicare unless you’ve spent three days in the hospital as an actual ad-mitted patient.

A Medicare pamphlet says: “If you’re in the hospital more than a few hours, always ask your doctor or the hospital staff if you’re an inpatient or an outpatient.” And no matter how long you’re “observed,” that time doesn’t count toward a genu-ine inpatient three-day stay if you need to move on to a nursing facility.

To find out more about this, you can call Medi-care at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). Or go online to medicare.gov/publications and put the publication ID number in the search box: 11435. Be sure to scroll down and read all the examples in the chart.

September 30 - October 6, 2010

Carl Edwards, who won nine races in 2008, hasn't won any since.

Yet Edwards, who was runner-up to Jimmie Johnson in the 2008 Chase for the Sprint Cup, is back in it this year and actually accumulated more points in the final 10 races of the regular season

than any other driver.Consistency has become Edwards' key.A 10th-place finish in the Sylvania 300 at New

Hampshire Motor Speedway left Edwards, 31, in ninth place in the Sprint Cup standings, 95 points behind leader Denny Hamlin.

Edwards, of Columbia, Mo., felt good to put New Hampshire -- and a decent finish -- behind him.

"Everyone knows that the meat of the Chase is mile-and-a-half tracks like Kansas and California," he said. "You definitely want to get a good start, but I don't think anyone can set the tone of the Chase here (New Hampshire), just because it's kind of a unique track."

The challenge, of course, is beating Jimmie Johnson, who has won the past four championships.

"I think that we have proven ... that we can score more points than anyone in the series, and that's what it is going to take," said Edwards. "Jimmie (Johnson) did a good job ... of explaining that you have to have something to hang your hat on. You either have to have wins or you have to be very consistent. You have to have some sort of thing to build your team around.

"We are building our hopes on the fact that we have shown, over an extended period, that we can score bet-ter average finishes than everyone else. Now we just have to go do that. That's what I am counting on: the ability to go do that."

Edwards has spent his entire Sprint Cup career driv-ing Roush Fenway Racing's No. 99 Ford. In 2005, his first full season, he wound up third in the Chase behind that year's champion, Tony Stewart, and Edwards' team-mate, Greg Biffle.

Consistency is a recent addition to Edwards' reper-

Don't Count Edwards Outtoire. All 16 of his Cup victories have taken place in three seasons -- 2005, 2007 and 2008 -- but he has qualified for the Chase in five of his six full seasons.

Edwards won the Nationwide Series championship in 2007.

Easy Container GardeningBy Tresa Erickson

Your mother simply adores gardening and dotes on her flower garden. Your father does, too, as his abundant vegetable patch well proves. Heck, even your sisters like to get out in the garden every now and then and have their own herb gardens. You come from a family of gardeners, but for some peculiar reason, you don’t have a green thumb. Even if you did have one, you live in an apartment and don’t really have the space for a garden. Sure, you could have a container garden on your terrace, but since you can’t keep one houseplant alive, you doubt you could keep a terrace of potted plants alive...or could you? There are some plants that almost all people can grow. They’re called cacti, and they can be grown successfully in pots al-most anywhere.

Caring for cacti is relatively easy and revolves around three crucial factors-light, heat and wa-ter. Cacti typically grow in deserts and are ac-customed to receiving a lot of light and heat. For optimum growth, they need to be placed in direct sunlight, like a terrace during the summer or a south-facing window indoors during the winter. The ideal temperature range for cacti is 50 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Cacti generally cannot take the frost, so they must be moved indoors at the onset of colder weather.

Of the three factors involved in caring for cacti, water is the trickiest. At the beginning of the growing season, cacti require just a bit of water in the first few weeks, which is gradually increased until the height of the growing season, when they should be given a good soaking once a week. As the growing season winds down, cacti require less and less water until winter when a light watering once a month will do the trick. The best way to water a cactus is to fill a shallow tray with water and stand it in the tray until the top of the soil becomes wet. Then the cactus can be put where it will drain freely. Be-tween waterings, the soil should be given ample time to dry.

At some point, your cacti will probably need to be repotted. If the plant starts pushing against the sides of the pot or becomes top heavy, it’s time to move it. In order to repot a cactus, you

need a clay pot and some sandy soil. Both will help prevent the cactus from becoming too wet and rotting. While the clay will absorb the wa-ter and allow it to evaporate, the sandy soil will allow the water to drain more freely. To make sandy soil, simply mix two parts potting compost with one part sharp sand. Then, wearing heavy gloves, gently transfer the cactus to the new pot, being careful not to disturb the roots too much. Wait a few weeks before watering the plant.

Cacti are accustomed to living in poor quality soil and require little in the way of fertilizer. Usu-ally all that is needed is an application of tomato feed mixed at one-third the normal strength once a month. If you have a fish tank, you may be able to skip the tomato feed and use some water from it as fertilizer.

Cacti can have pest problems, primarily meal bugs and red spiders. To treat these, use chemicals or organic methods. Several chemi-cals are available, and some of the preferred organic methods include removing mealy bugs with a small brush or spraying the plant with a nicotine solution.

Growing cacti does not take a lot of time or effort. They almost tend to themselves, and as such, make ideal plants for those without a green thumb. Give them a try and find out for yourself how easy it is to grow cacti.

• On Oct. 15, 1917, Mata Hari, the archetype of the seductive female spy, is executed for espionage by a French firing squad at Vincennes outside of Paris. She first came to Paris in 1905 and found fame as a performer of exotic Asian-inspired dances, claiming to have been born in a sacred Indian temple. In reality, Mata Hari was born in a small town in northern Holland in 1876, and her real name was Margaretha Geertruida Zelle.

• On Oct. 11, 1925, novelist Elmore Leonard is born in New Orleans. His book "Hombre" (1961) was voted one of the best 25 Westerns of all time by the Western Writers of America. His first mystery, "The Big Bounce" (1969), was rejected by 84 publishers before it was published as an original paperback.

• On Oct. 17, 1931, gangster Al Capone is sentenced to 11 years in prison for tax evasion and fined $80,000. Elliot Ness and his "Untouchables" routinely broke up Capone's bootlegging businesses, but it was tax-evasion charges that finally stuck and landed Capone in prison.

• On Oct. 12, 1945, Army Pfc. Desmond T. Doss of Lynchburg, Va., is presented the Congressional Medal of Honor for outstanding bravery as a medical corpsman, the first conscientious objector in American history to receive the nation's highest military award.

• On Oct. 13, 1953, the world's first art museum on wheels opens in Fredericksburg, Va. It was called the Artmobile, a $20,000, 34-foot-long air-conditioned trailer with museum-quality lighting. The trailer was pulled around the state behind an enormous blue truck.

• On Oct. 14, 1968, U.S. Defense D e p a r t m e n t officials announce that the Army and

Marines will be sending about 24,000 men back to Vietnam for involuntary second tours because of the length of the war, high turnover of personnel and the tight supply of experienced soldiers.

• On Oct. 16, 1976, "Disco Duck" hits the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts. Created by bored drive-time radio disc jockey Rick Dees, the song got airplay in every town except Memphis, where Dees had his radio show.

Q: I have a pin that was worn in the hat of an officer of the Italian Army during World War I. What would be its approximate value? -- Francine, Rio Rancho, N.M.

A: I contacted several military collectors and they seem to agree that it is probably worth in the $15 to $25 range, depending on both condition and desirability.

***Q: I sent you a list of about 40 antiques and collectibles that I own,

with a request that you provide me with current values so I can sell these items for a fair market price. I even enclosed a self-addressed, stamped envelope, but I have not heard from you in over a month. What’s the problem? -- Ken, Fall River, Mass.

A: I am not an appraiser, nor do I play one on television. If that is what you need, you can find a certified appraiser in your area at one of two excellent websites: www.appraisers.org and www.appraisersassoc.org. You should expect to pay for this service.

I sometimes reference values in this column, but generally they come from a price guide I trust, a website or an opinion of a knowledgeable collector/expert. Although I was directly involved in the antique/collectible business for more than three decades, I am not qualified to appraise, which is why I often steer my readers in the right direction so that they can find the information they need.

Because of the volume of mail and e-mails that I receive, I can’t personally answer letters, even ones with SASE. Even though I try to answer questions within a month or two of when they are received, it is not always possible.

***Q: I have a collection of signed 8-by-10 photographs by stars who

include Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Laurel and Hardy, Alan Ladd and Gene Autry. I would like to find out current values for insurance purposes. -- Marie, McKees Rocks, Pa.

A: Robert Jones is an established dealer who specializes in celebrity autographs, and he might be able to help you. His contact information is 559 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820; [email protected]; and www.autographworld.com.

Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected]. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox is unable to personally answer all reader questions. Do not send any materials requiring return mail.

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I read Linda's letter ("Cat's Aim Is Off the Mark"), and we also had the same problem. I bought a large plastic tote that was "above the aim" and used that in place of the lid by setting it up sideways and sliding the litter box into it. Problem solved! -- Sharon L., Kissimmee, Fla.

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: We used a small dog-gie litter box to address this problem with an older cat at my workplace. We also placed pee pads un-derneath and against the wall just in case her aim was way off. -- Ann in Rochester, N.Y.

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I had this problem with "Gabriel," our 8-year-old Maine Coon. After observing him, I realized that as a senior cat, he couldn't squat to pee as well as he used to and so he would overshoot the box. I finally made Ga-briel a "custom" litter box that solved the issue permanently. I bought a large Rubbermaid storage container and simply cut a doorway into the side of it for him. With the container's almost 18-inch walls, there simply is no overshooting or spraying over the top. You have to use a box cutter or carpet knife to cut out the opening (be very careful not to slip and cut yourself). Both Gabriel and I are happy campers! -- Brett N., Atlanta

The Cats That Couldn't Shoot Straight

By Sam Mazzotta

DEAR READERS: Thanks for writing, all of you! I've definitely had a lot of responses, suggest-ing that even though a cat missing the litter box is usually a minor issue, it's very, very common. Again, if you're concerned about a cat's spraying over the edge of the box, bring it to the vet for a checkup, just to rule out anything physically wrong.

Seventeen percent of all the restaurants in the country are pizzerias. If you're like 93 percent of Americans, you eat at least one pizza every month. Pepperoni is the most popular topping, followed by sausage, mushrooms, onions and olives. And

The root of the word is from the Greek "dipso," meaning "thirst" -- and we're all familiar with the "mania" part. "Dipsomaniac" is just a fancy name for a drunk. • You may be surprised to learn that 43 percent of 6- to 9-year-old girls use lip gloss. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My mother is 69 and has, during the past few years, shown signs of memory problems. In the span of 20 minutes, she might ask the same question several times. She has trouble following the flow of conversation. I am concerned she might be forgetting her medicines. I called her physician and was told that until she forgets what things like toasters are used for, there is no real concern. Isn't early intervention a key to treating Alzheimer's? -- M.K.

ANSWER: With age, it takes more time to retrieve information from the memory than it does in youth. That's normal. It's also normal for older people, given a sufficient amount of time, to recall the events of the preced-ing day or of special occasions. They might, on occasion, find it difficult to come up with a particular word, but they should be able to continue to perform tasks like balancing a checkbook. They might misplace things, as we all do. However, they can institute a search in an orderly and methodi-cal way.

It's not normal to forget an entire event even when they are given prompt-ings of what has happened. Misplacing things because the things have been put in strange places isn't normal. An example is putting the car keys in the refrigerator.

Neurologists, geriatricians (doctors who specialize in the treatment of the elderly), psychiatrists and psychologists administer tests that more precisely reflect a person's memory and thinking capabilities. Having your mother tested isn't a bad idea, and she should not take offense at the suggestion.

Four medicines constitute the bulk of prescriptions written for Alzheimer's disease. They are Aricept, Razadyne, Exelon and Na-menda. The first three are usually prescribed for the early stages of this illness. None is a cure. They can slow its progression. Dozens of new medicines are currently under investigation.

The booklet on Al-zheimer's describes this illness and its treatment in understandable terms. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 903W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

Q: I love the Starz original series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," and I am eager to know if the series will return for a second season. I know that the show's star, Andy Whitfield, has been battling cancer, but I heard he was on the mend. -- Theresa F., Bowling Green, Ohio

A: Andy had been making terrific prog-ress. His non-Hodgkin Lymphoma was in remission, he was back in training for "Spartacus," and in an appearance at July's San Diego Comic-Con, he said that he felt better than ever. However, Andy and Starz recently announced that the actor had to leave the series to immediately resume aggressive treatment for the recur-rence of his cancer.

Andy said in a statement: "It's with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as 'Spartacus' and all the wonderful people involved. It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey."

A representative for the network said the future of the series will be discussed at a later date. Starz still plans to air the show's prequel, "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," in January 2010. It focuses on the House of Batiatus before Spartacus arrives in Capua, and stars returning cast members John Hannah and Lucy Lawless.

***Q: My husband and I are big fans of the new cop show "The Good Guys." It's

such a refreshing change from all the same old ones. Can you please tell us if it will be picked up for another season? -- Linda M., via e-mail

A: The buddy cop show, which premiered in May on Fox, has been picked up for a second season, and has acquired fall-season status. You can catch it on Friday nights (rather than Mondays). I'm sure that its stars, Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks, thank you for your support.

***Q: David Cross is one of my favorite comedians. What has he been up to lately?

-- Paul F., via e-mailA: The 46-year-old funnyman has brought his original comedy series, "The

Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret," to the Independent Film Channel, where it airs Friday nights. This hilarious show follows the entertaining misadven-tures of an American pathological liar (David) as he bluffs his way into a senior marketing job in the London office for an energy drink called ThunderMuscle. The always-hilarious Will Arnett plays his boss. To read my fun interview with David, go to www.celebrityextraonline.com.

***Q: Who are your early picks to take home the mirror-ball trophy on "Dancing

With the Stars"? -- Harriet F., Tacoma, Wash.A: Hands-down, my early favorites are Jennifer Grey and Kyle Massey. Jennifer

dances like she has the spirit of Patrick Swayze guiding her, and Kyle has youthful exuberance and showman-ship on his side. I can't wait to see more from them.
