Shih-tzu Is Biting Herself CrazyDEAR PAW’S CORNER: What would make my

shih-tzu bite her tail? I noticed that “Mitzy” wasconstantly trying to nibble her own tail. When Ilooked closer, I found a hard lump and a small cutthat was draining. She bites at it worse at night.Mitzy has no fleas, but she does have dry skin. What’s going on? — Alice H., via e-mail

DEAR ALICE: Without knowing exactly wherethe lump is located, I can’t say for certain. It goeswithout saying that any change in a dog’s behav-ior, or anything odd that you notice on your pet(such as a new lump or a draining cut) should

prompt you to visit the veterinarian as soon aspossible for a thorough checkup.

Some dogs, regardless of breed, suffer fromchronic dry skin. But dry skin can be a herald of adeeper health problem, such as a thyroid condi-tion, which can only be determined through a bloodtest. So, the best thing to do, again, is mention it toMitzy’s vet when you bring her in to have the lumpchecked.

The vet may do a biopsy to determine whetherthe lump is benign. He or she also will ask you anumber of questions about Mitzy’s daily behav-ior: how much and how often she eats, if she is

drinking and urinatingmore than usual, if the dryskin has been a problemfor a long time or if it’srecent, any known foodallergies or health prob-lems, and so on.

If there are no underly-ing problems, the vet mayrecommend that you try achange in Mitzy’s diet (heor she will give you someoptions) to treat her dryskin. You can also add anOmega 3 supplement toher food — the vet mayhave this available, or youcan purchase the supple-ment at a pet store.

Q: I have a toy cap pistol that was manufactured by Colt. Any idea of its value? —Homer, Marion, Ind.

A: Cap pistols, especially ones manufactured under the names of such Westernstars as Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and Hopalong Cassidy, are extremely collectible. To find out the value of the one you have, I suggest you contact the Toy Gun Collec-tors of America, 3009 Oleander Ave., San Marcos, CA 92069.

• • •Q: I have a number of old books in good or excellent condition. Among them is a

first edition of “The Death of a President” by William Manchester. I would like tofind information about the value of my books and possibly selling them, either onlineor through the mail. — Annette, Albuquerque, N.M.

A: My first suggestion is that you break out the business pages of the Albuquerquetelephone book and contact used-book dealers in your city. This will give you an ideaof what certain books are selling for in your area. You also can access the Web sitewww.abe.com, which is what I did when I read your letter. The site revealed severaldozen copies of Manchester’s book, all offered for less than $5 each.

• • •Q: I have some 33 rpm LPs of Dean Martin, Perry Como, Al Hirt and others from

this era. Where can I sell them? — Jeane, Rio Rancho, N.M.A: Most LPs — such as the ones you mentioned — sell for about a dollar each,

sometimes less, sometimes more, depending on rarity and condition. For a secondopinion, contact Richard Gesner’s Music Connection, 1711 South Willow St.,Manchester, NH 03103.

• • •Q: I have an album of “The Best of the Statler Brothers” that has never been

opened. I would like to find out the value of it. — Betty, Montevideo, Minn.A: I found your 1975 album listed in the Goldmine Standard Catalogue of Ameri-

can Records 1950-1975 edited by Tim Neely (Krause, $34.99). It is worth $12.• • •

Q: Greg, I hear that Sprint Nextel is in troubleand may back out as sponsor of NASCAR’s topdivision. Any truth to the rumors? — Cal L., Penn-sylvania

A: Cal, it’s no secret Sprint Nextel is strugglingas a company, but I haven’t heard any news that itwould drop its Sprint Cup sponsorship anytimesoon. However, things change quickly in the busi-ness world, and the latest buzz is that the com-pany is on the auction block, and several compa-nies, including foreign concerns, are interested inbuying.

A recent article in The Wall Street Journal said“people familiar with the matter” are saying thatNII Holdings Inc., a wireless Latin American busi-ness provider, and some private-equity firms areinterested in buying Nextel from wireless carrierSprint.

Sprint acquired Nextel in 2005 for an estimated$35 billion, but has been negatively affected bycustomer defections. To make matters worse, justimagine if Jeff Burton were to win the champion-ship in the AT&T wireless car and the CEO ofSprint had to present Burton and owner RichardChildress the big money at the year-end banquet? That wouldn’t be a pleasant task.

In summary, nothing would surprise me in thiscurrent business atmosphere, but as of this writ-ing, Sprint is still on board with NASCAR forseveral more years. Let’s hope more NASCARfans sign up for Sprint services.

A: B.L., over the years, you and your friends inPort Richey and New Port Richey have been loyalreaders with lots of good questions. As you alreadyknow, the Andy Granatelli-owned, Grant King-wrenched, Plymouth-powered Indy Car driven byArt Pollard won the Dover, Del., Indy Car raceback on Aug. 24, 1969. On the high banks ofDover’s Monster Mile, the first-ever Delaware 200was held, and Pollard claimed his second victoryof the season in the No. 57 STP Gerhardt Plymouth. He started 10th, and then led the final 72 laps towin over Gordon Johncock. Sadly, Pollard lost hislife trying to qualify for the Indy 500 on May 12,1973, following a morning practice session crash. He was a beloved and highly respected driver whoalways took time to talk with the fans and media.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

MacularDegeneration Can

be Wet or DryDEAR DR. DONOHUE: Everything I read or

hear about macular degeneration is alwaysabout dry macular degeneration. I happento have the wet kind, and would like to knowwhat its treatments are. I’ve heard thatvitamins work. Do they? Thank you. — T.R.

ANSWER: In the well-off countries of theworld, macular degeneration is the leadingcause of blindness in people over 50. Thereare two varieties, wet and dry. The dry kind isthe more common of the two, accounting for85 percent to 90 percent of all maculardegeneration cases. Both involvedeterioration of the macula, a small circle onthe retina, jam-packed with vision cellsnecessary for high-resolution sight like reading, watching TV, distinguishing faces and driving.

Wet macular degeneration comes from asudden proliferation of fragile blood vesselsblossoming in and around the macula. Thosevessels leak fluid and blood, and disrupt thatsensitive area of sight. Wet maculardegeneration often comes on quickly andcan progress rapidly.

You might have heard of the vitamin-mineral mixture used for slowing theprogression of macular degeneration. Itconsists of vitamins C and E, beta-caroteneand the minerals zinc and copper. It is muchmore useful for dry macular degeneration. Forwet macular degeneration, eye doctors caninject the eye with medicines that stop thegeneration and growth of new, delicateblood vessels. Lucentis and Avastin are twoexamples.

Photodynamic therapy is another methodof handling wet degeneration. Here, a drugthat is sensitive to light is injected into a bloodvessel. The drug localizes in the newly formed, fragile, troublemaking macular vessels. A laseris flashed on those vessels and they dry up.

I don’t know if your doctor has suggestedany treatment. It may be that you’re not at astage when therapy would provide the most

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I crave salt. I sprinkle it

heavily on an egg in the morning. At noon Isprinkle it on potatoes, and in the evening onmeat, corn or tomatoes. As a snack I eat rawpotatoes sprinkled heavily with salt. My motherused lots of salt on her food. She lived to be96. — B.

ANSWER: Most often, salt craving is a learnedhankering. You were conditioned to grab thesaltshaker by your mother, and she, probably,

by her mother. You should conquer the salthabit. Even though it didn’t hurt your motherand apparently hasn’t hurt you, too much saltcan raise blood pressure.

Slowly wean yourself off your high-salt diet.Cook and season with things like lemon juice, lime juice, vinegar, pepper and the large arrayof herbs and spices found in every grocerystore. In a month or so, you’ll wonder how youtolerated so much salt on your food. You’llexperience tastes that salt had beencompletely obliterating.

The late fall and winter months can makeit difficult to continue a fitness routine thatconsists of outdoor activities. Colder tem-peratures and less sunlight require a realisticand diverse plan to keep you moving towardyour fitness goals. These tips can keep youfit on the inside when it gets cold outside.

• Anticipate a temperature change. Beginplanning alternative exercise routines early.

Cold Weather Fitness

Plan ahead; don’t wait until you are forced to changeyour workouts. A fitness routine that consists of running, walking, cycling or hiking may have to be altered duringcolder months.

• Find innovative and fun activities that could take theplace of outdoor activities that may have to be put onhold during the winter, such as dance lessons, spinningclasses, mall walking or indoor rock climbing. Try dif-ferent activities before the really cold weather arrives,so you’re well-prepared if your workouts have to change.Keeping yourself active and motivated are top priorities.

• Prepare your body for colder weather. Not everyonehibernates; if you continue to walk, run or cycle outdoorsas the weather changes, it is extremely important to equipyour body with tools to fight the elements. Dress in lay-ers and protect your head, ears, face, nose, hands andtoes. As you begin to warm up you can always peel backlayers. And drink plenty of fluids. Although the weatheris cold outside and you may take longer to build a sweat, staying hydrated is still important.

• Go with the flow. Try to remain flexible and giveyourself many options. Since the weather is beyond ourcontrol, developing plans for different scenarios can behelpful. Joining a health club, purchasing an aerobic videoor teaming up with a friend who owns fitness equipmentare three options you can use to complete your aerobicworkout regardless of outside conditions. Also, remem-ber not to be too hard on yourself if you miss a day —just get back on track as soon as possible.
