DEAR PAW'S CORNER: Have you ever covered the topic of hot spots on dogs before? -- Barb, via e-mail

Hot Spots Are Pesky Skin ConditionBy Sam Mazzotta

DEAR BARB: I have, although most of the time this pesky condition comes up as part of another topic. Hot spots are surface skin infections that generally look like circular bare patches in a dog's fur and can be painfully itchy. They sometimes smell bad and ooze pus, but the most common sign of a hot spot is your dog being agitated and constantly scratching, licking or biting the af-fected area.

Dogs can develop hot spots from scratching flea bites, underneath tangled or matted hair, after swimming at public beaches and more.

Untreated hot spots will spread, and while

there are home remedies -- like dabbing a 50/50 vinegar-water solution on the spot a few times daily -- your veterinarian can recom-mend the most effective treatment. Certainly, if home treatment doesn't work or your dog's condition worsens, you should consult a vet.

Prevention -- or management after a bout with hot spots -- is important. After your dog goes swimming, shower it off well, dry as much as possible and wipe the outer part of the ears with a dry cotton ball. Treat regularly for fleas to minimize their impact. Groom your dog regularly -- especially if it has a thick

coat -- to prevent his undercoat from getting matted and trapping moisture and bacteria against the skin.

August 12 - 18, 2010

Briefly, it appeared as if Sam Hornish Jr. might pull the Pennsylvania 500 out of his hat. Or helmet.

When all the leaders pitted late in the season's latter Pocono Raceway event, Hornish's Dodge remained on the track. Then

it began raining. Had the rain not dissipated, Hornish would have won for the first time at NASCAR's high-est level.

It didn't happen. Hornish yielded the lead to Greg Biffle, who ran away from the field in the final laps. Without the benefit of having pitted for fresh tires, Hornish slumped to an 11th-place finish.

Hornish's career best was a fourth-place finish at Pocono on Aug. 3, 2009.

A native of Defiance, Ohio, Hornish switched full-time to NASCAR in 2008 after winning two Indy Rac-ing League championships and the 2006 Indianapolis 500. The Sprint Cup going has been tough. Hornish finished 35th in the 2008 point standings and was 28th in '09. Through 21 races this year, he ranks 27th.

"I feel like some of that is due to me," said Hornish. "I feel like some of that is just the transition from the old car to the new (NASCAR chassis design) and how the team did it.

"We've had highs and lows. We go out there and lead laps, go out there and finish fourth. ... I feel like we can do it, it's just how do we get a little more luck on our side. We have to take our bad days and make them a 20th. Thirty-fifth-place bad days are what kill us."

Before the season began, Hornish answered questions about the NASCAR experiment of another prominent IRL driver, Danica Patrick.

Speaking from the perspective of someone who knew, Hornish said, "I'm sure she's not going to have any problems dealing with the media. Racing out there on the track is a different thing. Running against 42 other cars ... I wish her well."

The Sprint Cup Series represents the big leagues of American racing. "Nobody's going the other way," said Hornish, referring to the IRL.

Though his strategy didn't quite work, Hornish had one of his better, if disappointing, days at Pocono.

So, So Close for Sam "We've been playing catch-up," he said, "and we want to get to the point where people play catch-up to us."

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What causes sun-spots? They appear even when we have not been exposed to the sun. -- Anon.

ANSWER: The sun has nothing to do with sunspots. A fungus is their cause. The fungus depigments patches of skin so they are lighter than the surrounding skin. The sun comes into play only because it darkens the surrounding skin and the spots stand out like a sore thumb.

Selenium sulfide and fungal medicines like Lotrimin, Naftin and Tinactin can usually dis-lodge the fungus. The depigmented skin stays light for quite some time, and people believe the medicines have not worked. In time, pigmenta-tion returns.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 76. I am the fifth

of eight boys. Three had the shingles. Our parents are gone. I want to get the shingles vaccine, but was told by friends that you cannot get the shot if you did not have chickenpox. I don't remember whether I had chickenpox. -- P.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I recovered from shingles a few years ago. After hearing many horror stories about shingles, I wonder if I should consider getting the vaccine to prevent another outbreak. -- J.V.

ANSWER: Almost every older American has been infected with the chickenpox virus, whether or not they can remember having had the illness. That indicates that almost all older Americans still harbor the chickenpox virus in their nerve cells. In later years, the virus escapes from nerve cells and travels down the nerve to the skin, where it brings about an outbreak of shingles. Therefore, all older people qualify for the shingles vaccine, regardless of their ability

to remember having had chickenpox.Authorities recommend that those who have had

a shingles outbreak get the vaccine. It is true that a shingles outbreak affords some protection against a second outbreak, but return visits from the shingles virus do occur, so, J.V., you qualify for the vac-cine.

Shingles is a painful experience, and the pain can last long after the rash has gone. The shingles booklet explains this common problem and how it's treated. Q: I recently inherited an item that I was told is a puff-patter. It is made of cut crystal, but I’m still not certain exactly what it is. Can you help me? -- Susan, Ma-con, Ga.

A: According to one of my favorite reference books, “Glass A-Z” by David J. Shotwell (Krause, $24.95), puff-patters were popular during the 1930s. They were made of clear or colored glass combined with French swansdown. The stylized powder puffs often were crafted to match perfume bottles and makeup mirrors. The ones made in Czechoslovakia are quite rare and desirable to collectors.

You have decided that this is the year you are finally going to plant that garden. But you want something slightly less traditional. How about a rock garden? Creating your own rock garden is not as hard as you think.

As with any garden, you must first decide where you are going to put your rock garden and what you want the final product to look like. A traditional rock garden has tiered rocks with plants that are less than a foot high. But who wants to be traditional? With rocks being the most important thing in a rock garden, let’s start there.

When selecting rocks for your garden, find ones that are native to your area. These will be the easiest and cheapest to get. Keep in mind that you will need some small rocks, but the majority of the rocks you use will need to be big and irregularly shaped. However, there is nothing set in stone that says you can’t use driftwood, stumps or antique tools in your rock garden. It seems that no matter where you live, the recommended rock is limestone. Limestone is soft and porous, allowing moisture to seep in. Limestone also has depressions that can be filled with dirt for planting moss and lichens.

If you are lucky enough to have a steep slope where you have trouble keeping grass and other plants, you have an ideal spot for a rock garden. Otherwise, you can create your rock garden on a mound or tiered area built up to about two-and-a half feet. Next comes the placement of the rocks. You will need to bury each rock, leaving the top third showing. You should set up the rocks to look as natural as possible. Let the soil around the rocks settle for a couple of days. Then look at the arrangement to make sure everything is where you want it.

Next, decide what kind of plants you want in your garden. The plants you select should be right for your climate and exposure. For those of you who don’t want to fidget with your garden over and over, try planting plants that only bloom in the spring. For splashes of color, plant a few annuals, herbs and heathers. Some perennials that you might want to include are: balloon flower, calla lily, crocus, snowdrop, wand flower and phlox. Some annuals to include are: tidy tips, baby’s breath, summer savory, torenai and zin-nia.

The care you give your rock garden will depend on the types of plants you use. Occa-sionally, you will need to loosen the soil with a small garden utensil and add compost or manure. You will also need to cut back any plants after flowering, remove any dead portions, and when a plant becomes too big for its space, divide it up. Don’t let weeds get into nooks and crannies-they can take over a space if left unchecked. You will also need to check regularly for insects and slugs (they like the shelter

that the rocks give). Plants in a rock garden are more exposed in the winter, so before the first freeze, put down a thick layer of heavy mulch.
