train of emigrants from Missouri and Arkansas apparently began when the Mormons refused to sell the train any supplies.

• On Sept. 10, 1897, 25-year-old London taxi driver George Smith becomes the first person ever arrested for drunk driving after slamming his cab into a building. Smith later pled guilty and was fined 25 shillings.

• On Sept. 6, 1915, a prototype tank nicknamed Little Willie rolls off the assembly line in England. Little Willie was far from an overnight success. It weighed 14 tons, got stuck in trenches and crawled over rough terrain at only 2 mph. However, improvements were made to the original prototype and tanks eventually transformed military battlefields.

• On Sept. 9, 1939, audiences at the Fox Theater in Riverside, Calif., get a surprise showing of "Gone with the Wind," which the theater manager shows as a second feature. Producer David O. Selznick sat in the back and observed the audience reaction to his highly anticipated film. The movie was released a few months later.

• On Sept. 7, 1950, Julie Kavner, perhaps best known as the voice of Marge Simpson on "The Simpsons," is born in Los Angeles. Kavner's first professional acting job came in 1974 when she was cast as Brenda Morgenstern in the TV series "Rhoda."

• On Sept. 12, 1972, cowboy actor William Boyd, best known for his film and television role as Hopalong Cassidy, dies at the age of 77. By 1950, American children had made "Hopalong Cassidy" the seventh most popular TV show in America.

August 26 - September 1, 2010

BROOKLYN, Mich. -- A typical first impression of Jeff Burton is that he's got more sense than most race-car drivers.

It isn't to say that racers aren't intelligent, witty and likable. They are. Burton, however, is thoughtful, reasonable and tactful. Those are the qualities that set him apart.

At 43, Burton is the younger of South Boston, Va., racing brothers. Ward Burton won five Sprint Cup races in a career that ran from 1994 through 2007, highlighted by the 2002 Daytona 500. Jeff Burton has won 21 times at NASCAR's highest level.

Perhaps a rivalry among brothers is an excellent breeding ground for tact.

Jeff Burton is one of six drivers in the current top 12 -- i.e., Chase for the Sprint Cup position with three regular-season races left -- without a victory thus far in 2010. Nonetheless, he ranks seventh in the point standings with four top-five finishes and 12 top 10s. A year ago, none of Richard Childress Racing's three driv-ers made the Chase. This year all three are in position to do so, and Kevin Harvick is the point leader.

"We've had to fight to climb back up the hill," said Burton. "What we have to work on is not getting back down. This is a competitive sport. You're not

always going to be as good as you can be. ... You've just got to go to work and not accept failure."

As far as the Chase is concerned, he added, "Number one, you still have to make it. There's still a lot of racing left to go. Number

Jeff Burton Running Hardtwo, I just believe that this Chase will be like most Chases: You've got to run in the front. You have to avoid the bad races."

With the Chase just three races away, Burton said, "Some people continued on page 14

are trying to protect positions. Some people are trying to go get bonus points. Some people are trying to earn their way in. The guys that are in 14th, 15th, they don't believe they are out of it. They still have a shot."

Anyone who makes the Chase, of course, has "a shot" at the Sprint Cup champi-onship. A championship would crown Burton's entire career. He has finished third, fourth, fifth (twice), sixth, seventh and eighth in the Cup standings at various points in his career.

"I hope that we can come down to Homestead," said Burton, referring to the season finale. "I hope we can be in the midst of it, and it comes down to late in the race. That's what we do."

• It was 19th-century author Samuel Butler who made the following sage observation: "Morality is the custom of one's country and the current feeling of one's peers. Cannibalism is moral in a cannibal country." • When the city of New York was concerned about leaks in its main water-supply system, it found a novel approach to the problem. Six experienced deep-sea divers were hired to live in a pressurized tank within the water-supply tunnel for a month while they investigated the leaks. • Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Popsicle was invented by an 11-year-old boy.

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: If you can get this information to Linda J., whose dog, Caitlin, had mouth ulcers, I think she would appreciate it. There is a relatively new product on the market called Vetericyn. I used it on my elderly horse who also had a terrible erosion of his gum. It looked better in about four days and healed in two weeks! -- Carol S., via email

DEAR CAROL: Thanks! Vetericyn's website (http://www.vetericyn.com) claims the treatment reduces healing time for wounds by up to 60 percent, and that it's nontoxic and doesn't damage healthy tissue.

Now, I tend to look askance at any product that claims to be a cure-all, so I did a bit of research on this relatively new product, which has been touted to the equine world for about a year and is beginning to take off as a treatment for household pets.

Treating Pet's Mouth UlcersBy Sam Mazzotta

Vetericyn is a mixture of ionized water and very low amounts of bleach and sodium (salt) -- all of which are pretty effective at killing bacteria, viruses and fungi. But some horse owners have mentioned on equine forums that it was not effective in helping wounds heal. Others think it's a great product.

Does this mean you shouldn't use Vetericyn? Feel free to give it a try. If your pet is suffering from a sore that won't heal, however, I strongly recommend you work with your vet during treatment so he or she can monitor your pet's progress and provide treat-ment alternatives should they be needed.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Three women who were in high school at the same time I was have died of Lewy body dementia. Do only women have it? No one I have talked to knows anything about it. I would appreciate any information you can provide. -- L.P.

ANSWER: Dementia is a decline in mental functioning. Memory loss is prominent. Simple arithmetic skills (balancing a checkbook), expressing oneself clearly and logically, and making rational judgments are greatly diminished in a person with dementia. "Demen-tia" is an umbrella word that covers the loss of these basic mental functions. Alzheimer's disease is the leading cause of dementia, but it is not the sole cause. Multiple small strokes, Binswanger's disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and frontotemporal dementia are other causes. Second to Alzheimer's as a cause is dementia with Lewy bodies.

Lewy bodies, named in honor of the pathologist Dr. Friedrich Lewy, who first described them, are blobs of peculiar material within brain cells. They stain a striking color when special dye is applied to brain tissue viewed with a microscope. Somehow they bollix up brain function.

Definite proof of dementia with Lewy bodies rests on microscopic examination of the brain after death. However, some unique signs of this illness make it diagnosable during life. In addition to the symptoms of dementia, Lewy body patients often see things that aren't there -- visual hallucinations. They have symptoms found in Parkinson's disease -- muscle rigidity, slow movement, walking disturbances with frequent falls. Patients have fluctuating alertness, periods of lucidity intermixed with longer periods of utter confusion.

Men as well as women get this illness. What causes it is a question that remains unanswered.Sometimes drugs used for Alzheimer's disease improve symptoms of dementia with

Lewy bodies. Parkinson's drugs are prescribed to lessen the features of that illness, but they do not work as well as they do in Parkinson's disease.

The booklet on Alzheimer's disease delves into the signs and treatment of that all-too-prevalent illness. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 903W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Six years ago a

family member said she had breast cancer. Her doctor recommended that she see a

surgeon. She never saw one. She has had no chemotherapy or radia-tion or any other sort of cancer treatment. Six years later, she looks the same as she always did, without any sign of cancer.

Does cancer ever cure itself? Could it have been misdiagnosed? Have you ever heard of someone surviving breast cancer without any treatment? -- N.N.

ANSWER: I have never seen breast cancer cured without treat-ment. I don't believe it happens. If others have evidence to the contrary, let me know.

be" cancer? If the doctor was definite about the diagnosis, was a biopsy done, or on what evidence was the diagnosis made? I would be most interested to learn the facts.

Have you ever stayed someplace that featured a monochromatic design? The room or suite might have been decorated in various shades of white or brown or blue. Did you know that you can create the same effect in your garden? That’s right. You can have an all-white, an all-red or even an all-yellow garden. All it takes is some time and effort.

When selecting a color for your garden, think about the mood you want to create there. Do you want your garden to feel serene or vibrant? Cool colors like blue, green and purple will give your garden a sense of calmness, while warm colors like red, orange and yellow will perk it up. Consider the size and location of your garden as well. If your garden is fairly small, you may want to go with a cool color to maximize the space rather than a warm color, which could close it in. The light your garden receives also impacts your color choice. Pale colors enhance shady gardens, but tend to look washed out in sunny gardens. For a shady garden, choose a pale color, and for a sunny garden, choose a bolder color.

For the best results, go for a basic color like purple rather than a more specific shade like aubergine. You will find a larger variety of plants that come in purple than in aubergine. To add interest, you might want to pair the basic color you have chosen with

a complementary color. Purples mixed with pinks, whites or yellows, for example, will make for a very interesting garden.

Even when mixed with complementary colors, monochromatic gardens can become big blobs of color if you fail to take the height, shape and texture of your plants into consideration. To prevent this, select plants that vary in height, shape and texture.

To keep your garden in bloom as long as possible, try to select plants that vary in bloom time. Don’t choose plants that only bloom in the spring unless you want a spring garden. Mix perennials with an-nuals, and for a really creative garden, consider designing your planting so that you have soft colors in the spring, bright colors in the summer and warm colors in the fall.

When creating a monochromatic garden, start off gradually. Choose a small area and experiment with your plantings there. Once you get a feel for creating a monochromatic garden, you can expand it further. To complete the look, you can even add mulch, pav-ers and more in the basic color you have chosen.

Creating a monochromatic garden takes some time and effort, but if you’re looking for a garden with unity and harmony, it is definitely the way to go. Give it a try and see if it doesn’t provide you with pleasing results.

Q: I have a Gibson Byrdland guitar that I inher-ited from an uncle. I assume it has value, but I have no idea of how much. -- Mike, Canton, Ohio

A: I found your guitar referenced in Classic Gui-tars: Identification & Price Guide by Nick Freeth (Krause Publications). According to Freeth, your guitar “successfully combined the best character-istics of solid body and conventional design.” It is worth about $12,000.

• • •Q: I have an Avon bottle in the shape of a Ford

Model T. What can you tell me about its value? -- Dolores, Sodus Point, N.Y.

A: At almost every garage and yard sale I’ve ever seen, there have been at least two or three Avon collectibles ranging from Christmas orna-ments to bottles. During the 1980s, Avon col-lectibles peaked, and there is less demand in this current market. With that said, I recommend you find your bottle in one of the numerous Avon price guides available. I especially like Bob Hastin’s Avon Collectors’ Encyclopedia for Avon Bottles and California Perfume Products 1886-Present. I found several copies available for less than $20 at Amazon.com.

• • •Q: I have a Tiara canister in the Sandwich pat-

tern. I know nothing about this type of glass, but I have been offered $45 for it and wonder if I should accept. -- Sue, Lakewood, Colo.

A: The Sandwich line of Tiara glass was sold at in-home parties and was available in various colors, including ruby, teal, crystal, amber, green, pink, and blue. You can find out more about this type of glass by getting a copy of Collectible Glassware from the ‘40s, ‘50s, and ‘60s by Gene Florence (Collector Books). Your canister is worth in the $10 to $25 range. In other words, take the $45.
