Big month on the Dee

THREE big events take place on the River Dee this month.

On Sunday 12th June The 13th Deva Triathlon begins with a one mile swim along the

River Dee before the competitors get on their bikes through North Wales and nish with a

run around Grosvenor Park and the Meadows.

On the same day the Chester Charity Dragon Boat Festival takes place from 9.30am-

On Monday 27th June it is the Dee Mile Swim, at 12noon. A classical race on the Dee of

Race for Life date

THE Cancer Research UK Race for Life takes place on Sunday 19th June, 9am, at

River bank clean up

CHESHIRE West and Chester

Council joined forces with local

groups and residents to combat the

problem of litter along the banks of

the River Dee.

As the River Dee is a tidal river

debris from the sea, the river itself

and upstream from Bala Lake

moves up and down as the river

rises and falls. Much of the debris is

timber, but a signicant amount of

manmade materials like plastic and

glass bottles, cans, polystyrene and other oating waste, such as takeaway cartons, gets

stranded on the banks. Local Curzon Park and Saltney residents contacted the Council to

express their concern about the growing litter problem next to the footpath along the river.

On the day itself more than 50 people turned up to help pick up the litter over a mile long

stretch of the river bank between Chester Golf Club and River Lane, Saltney.

The Councils Director of Community and Environment, Steve Kent, said: We were

pleased that around 400 bags of rubbish were picked up as well as tyres, gas bottles and

other hazardous waste and large items of rubbish.

At least 75% of the litter was recyclable and all glass and plastic bottles, cans and metal

have been now been recycled. As well as being unsightly, the litter was polluting the

environment and poses threats to wildlife.

THE new vicar at St Marks Church, Saltney, is the Rev Hennie Johnston, who has been

an associate vicar in Birmingham.

PUPILS from Quees Park High Schools feeder primary schools at Belgrave,

Hoole, Lache, Overleigh St. Marys CE and St. Thomas of Canterbury produced

hudreds of digital images for the Where are they ow exhibitio at QPHS.

The aim of the project was to raise students aspirations for the future and

focuses o the trasitio for studets betwee Primary to Secodary schools.

STUDEnTS at The Catholic High Schoolare celebratig followig the ews that

they are set to receive a 17,071 grat

from the atios largest sports charity,

the Football Foudatio.

The funding boost will help the School to

refurbish its existing changing room facilities

which are contained within the main school

building.

The existing provisions,

which serve both the playingelds and the sports hall, are

not suitable for junior use but

when the upgrade is complete,

will offer a state-of-the-art experience for the

ve partner Clubs who use the site.

Between them; Westminster Park FC,

Upton Junior, Saltney Ferry FC, Broughton

Super Saints FC and Waverton FC have 20

teams and forecasts suggest that as a result

of the changing room upgrade,A total of 35 more teams will be able to

utilise the site for match play and training.

The Catholic High School is a mixed 11-18comprehensive school in Chester. The

school is extremely fortunate to have access

to its own extensive playing elds which it

makes use of for both curricular and extra

curricular activities, as well as opening up for

wider community use.

St Marys Church is looking for some

help to maintain some old red brick

walls around the boundary of its

Church Hall. The work involves re-

siting fallen coping bricks, cutting out

and replacing some bricks, and lots of

re-pointing.We already have had a couple of

volunteers but more help is welcome.

In 1995 the Poulto Project started witha iterest i developig a multi-period

archaeological ladscape ivestigatio

i the Chester hiterlad.

The hope was to nd a settlement that was

archaeologically rich over several periods, and

set in a landscape accessible to investigation.

The chapel site at Poulton more than fullled

these needs. The history and origin of the

chapel were scarcely known, yet it had a close

connection with the last Cistercian Abbey ofPoulton. Although the Abbey was removed in

the 13th century, the Cistercians continued to

dominate and shape the landscape around

Poulton until dissolution in 1534. In addition to

the medieval archaeology, an initial evaluation

in 1995 revealed unexpected evidence for

Roman and prehistoric occupation. It has

since been conrmed that at least two Roman

buildings exist, one of which is very substantial,

producing numerous brooches, coins etc.Establishment of the nature of this occupation

and of possible continuity to the medieval

period remains a main research objective at the

site.

Evolution

Although it began as a joint venture between

Chester Archaeology and the University of

Liverpool as a training site for students, the

project is now run independently by Mike Emeryand his team as the Poulton Research Project.

During the early years the site was used

primarily for training, with nancial limitationsnecessitating that the archaeologists volunteer

their time for weekend excavations. The

majority of the year was reserved for planning

and reorganising the program to facilitate the

conversion to independent status. The range

of the project has expanded to allow for more

outreach groups, childrens programmes,

and generating a global awareness of the

work being done. It also enabled the team to

approach nancial sponsors worldwide, whilst

maintaining a close connection with businesses

in the local community.

The project has come a long way from its

humble beginnings. Like the many periods of

history that came before, Poulton continues to

change and evolve through the hard work and

dedication of the professionals and volunteers

who care enough to shape it.It was originally thought the archaeological

project would last ten years but sixteen years

on its still going strong. The Poulton Project

has captured the imagination of many, but what

is important is to involve the whole community

in a project that seems never ending due to the

richness of discoveries about the way of life in

the area before and after the Romans inuence.

Artefacts discovered on the site also prove an

intriguing link between Poulton, Salisbury Plainand the World Heritage site of Stonehenge.

Some sun loving perennials will ower forweeks from June onwards. Try pale blueowered Nepeta (Catmint) and lemon yellow

Vegetables such as runner beans, courgettesand pumpkins can still be planted out ifpot grown indoors, provided they are wellgrown. First early potatoes should be ready toharvested in June so when the potato plantsower, dig down and see if there are potatoes

ready to eat.
