Local policing priorities have been set following engagement with the local community and based on

information fed bac at surgeries held with local residents:

The Meadows - In previous years due to the warmer weather we have experienced

issues with under age drinking and bbqs on the meadows in particular on weekday

evenings and weekend days. High Visability footpatrol in the area, between the hours

of 16.00pm and 21.00pm weekdays and 12.00pm 20.00pm on weekends.

    Plans to address the issue

Regular high visibility patrols will continue to take place around the Meadows,

stop checks to be made of persons causing any anti social behaviour. Youths to beadvised and moved on from these areas.

    Priorities

You said Reports of large groups gathering on The Meadows causing anti social

    behaviour and leaving litter behind.

We did PCSO Pendrey and the Community Safety Wardens have provided high

visability patrols on the Meadows and a litter pic too place on Sunday 13th May. These

patrols will continue over the summer period and further litter pics will be provided if

    necessary.

IF you want to have your say about crime or council issues, then regular surgeries tae

place on the rst Saturday of every month.

Surgeries for Handbridge, Saltney, Lache and Westminster Park take place with

PCSO Pendrey and Chris Fox and the local Councillors.

    Saltney Post Ofce - 9am - 10.15am

    Westminster Park Shops - 10.30am - 11.45am

    Handbridge Old Dee Bridge - 12pm - 1pm

These surgeries are an opportunity for residents to come and raise any council or police-

    related issues.

l PCSO Fox is also holding the Curzon Park Police Beat Meeting on the 30th July at

Chester Golf Club at 7pm and the Westminster Par Police Beat Meeting on the 31st

July at the Scout Hut, Manor Road, Westminster Par. These are opportunities for

residents to come and hear what the Police have been doing in their local area and to

raise any local issues with the Police.

Iam hoping tht by the tie youred this rticle suer willhave nally arrived! I was once

sked by foreigner fro oresunny clies why it is tht when thesun shines in Britin you ll tkeyour clothes off? I suppose the esynswer to tht is we love to feel thewrth of the sun on our skin nd

with our clite we dont enjoy thtluxury too often!

This month being a summer month Iwant to remind you to protect your skinat all times from the damaging rays ofthe sun whether you are in this country

or holidaying abroad. We all need thebenets of vitamin D obtained from thesuns rays, but you need only to expose asmall patch of skin without sun protectionfor 20 minutes two or three times a weekto absorb enough to keep levels high.

UVA rays are responsible for most skincancers and are the causes of the signs ofpremature ageing i.e. wrinkles, brown age

spots and leathery looking skin. UVB raysare responsible for the burn or rednessto the skin and also cause cancers. Makesure your sun screen contains a high SPFcombined with a UVA protection.

Wearing an SPF50 will NOT give you100% protection. An SPF15 blocks justover 93% of UVB rays, whilst an SPF30

blocks 96.6% of UVB rays. Sunscreens ofSPF50 contain higher levels of chemicals

    that can cause skin irritation.

Babies, young children and very fairskinned people are most at risk andmust be completely protected. Theyshould try to avoid exposure to the sununless well covered by light clothing and

Plants in ower this month includedelphiniums with their tall blue and whitespires of owers. They tend to die off in

severe winters and get eaten by slugs as theyemerge in spring so you may need to buy newplants in some years. Cut back the dead oweringstems and many with give you a second oweringin late autumn.

For those who are lucky to have moist or boggy soil,

there are some lovely plants for these situations. PurpleLoosestrife or Lythrum virgatum Rose Queen or The Rocketprovide tall spikes of pink owers which would look goodrising up above hostas or low growing perennials.

Honeysuckle owers in the hedgerows and it is a lovely plant thatwill often ower into autumn. Try scented varieties of Lonicerapericlymenum (our native honeysuckle) such as Serotina orGraham Thomas. They will ower best in light shade and inconditions where the roots are shaded. Try to replicate theirnatural conditions, growing through hedges with rootshaded, moist soil and owers in sun. Too hot a position

and they get mildew on the leaves and fail to ower.

Some plants such as perennial Geraniums, Catmint andCentaurea Montana will have nished owering. Cutback the owering stems and some of the leaves and youwill nd that the plant will put on new growth and often asecond ush of owers.

Continue sowing seeds of salads such as beetroot and radishesto extend the season lettuce seeds do not like too high atemperature for germination so sowing on a cooler series of days isbest. Also sow seeds of French beans, winter salad leaves, carrots

and turnips. Do make sure that brassica plants are netted. Iknow of one person who recently lost all the newly plantedbrassicas to pigeons.

New potatoes can be harvested especially if the plants arein ower as this usually indicates the potatoes are of a goodsize. Leeks should be planted in holes about 4 to 6 inchesdeep to ensure the stems are blanched white. I use thehandle of a trowel to make a hole, drop the leek into it thenwater in so the water puddles at the base of the hole. Theleek will grow away to ll the hole and give long white leeks in

    winter.

LOOkING at Dodleston C of E School fromChurch Road, four dates become apparent.

    1871, 1902, 1985 and 2001 can be seen

towards the apex of the gables. The Village

School was built in 1870 and took in its rst

batch of pupils in early 1871. The other dates

are when the school was extended to cope

with the growth of intae of pupils.

The Elementary Education Act of 1870 set

the framewor for schooling of all children

between ages 5 and 12 in England and Wales

but sadly, whilst education became mandatory

between these ages, living conditions, family

pressures, diseases and the weather all

    dictated how personal education progressed.

Head Teachers of these schools were

required to eep Log Boos which diarised

    signicant events and attendance percentages

on a weely basis. Government Grants

were received by schools based on weelyattendance gures and the Log Book was

regularly inspected by the local rector and also

Attendance Ofcers employed by Chester City

    Council.

The rst Log Book, which still exists and has

ve hundred pages of perfect handwriting,

states that on May 8th 1871 I, George

Morton, too charge of this school today. My

engagement dates from Easter (April 8th), but

Mr Owen, the last master, has been allowed toremain in charge until now

    Attendance

This Log Boo maes compulsive reading but

its content is too much to prcis here.

Each page catalogues village life from 8

May 1871 to 28 April 1911. There are some

fascinating and sad descriptions of events

    resonant of Charles Dicens.

Parents were required to pay a fee of aboutone old penny per wee for their childrens

education and there are many entries in the

Log Boo where children were sent home to

collect their fee; some didnt return that wee,

possibly through lac of funds! The attendance gures throughout the forty

years of records show a regular and interesting

    trend.

Hay harvesting in the elds around Dodleston

during the last wee of June and into mid July

meant many children were absent from school.

Their help was invaluable to ensure a speedy

    harvest.

The weather played a very signicant part

in the attendance at school. Heavy rain and

storms in summer; snow and frosts in winter

all had an affect on numbers. It is well nown

the living conditions amongst low paid worers

were not the best. Children would be sleeping

four or more to a bed. Not all had heavy

clothes or shoes to ward off the inclement

weather during the wal to school, hence the

drop in attendance during storms, snow etc.

Diseases such as Measles, Scarlet Fever,Chicken Pox, Whooping Cough and Croop

    affected attendance and many children

were off school for several wees until the

    with Bernard Dennis

    The Village School

infections subsided. There was one disease

for which there was little or no cure and thatwas Diphtheria. This occurred three times in

Dodleston. Firstly in September 1884 when a

young boy died, again in February 1907 when

several children succumbed but survived and

then, disastrously just before Christmas 1909

when a total of seven young children died

    from the disease.

    Expansion

On a brighter note, half day holidays were

    regularly given for good attendance guresand events such as a Grosvenor marriage;

the Diamond Jubilee in 1897; the death of

Queen Victoria; the 1902 Coronation and

Peace between the Boers and Britons.

Being a school dependent upon fees and

grants, the recording of attendances on a

weely basis was a priority for the Head

Teacher. The rst recorded attendance was

46.1 for the wee ending 19 May 1871. Given

the size of the village and the smallness ofthe school, this seems to be a substantial

number of attendees. By the end of May 1881

the attendance gure had risen to 66.1 and

in May 1901, the attendance had reachedthe incredible gure of 99 children, hence the

need for expansion of the building!

By mid 1902 the attendance peeed at 105,

mainly due to the opening of the Girls Home

just along the road from the school.

During the period of the rst log book, the

school only had two Head Masters. Firstly Mr

    George Morton who died in February 1891;

he was succeeded by Mr Joseph Yarwoodwho commenced his duties on 2 March 1891.

Their dedication to the duty of the school

and responsibilities to the children is

revealing. Mr Morton became very ill just

before 22 January 1891, as from that date

the Log Boo is written in the hand of his

wife, Mrs G. May Morton. She writes just

ve entries but it is poignant that the entry

for 13 February reads School closed on

Wednesday last owing to the death of theMaster. On 23 February she writes School

resumed this wee under my care.

There was one very interesting account

recorded on 27 June 1906. At precisely

9.45 am a rumbling noise was heard, the

blacboards on the easels shoo and eys

rattled as they hung in the cupboard doors.

The shoc was only of a short duration, only

two or three secondsthe children looed up

at their Teachers in amazement. This was the effect of an earthquae,

magnitude 5.2 that occurred off shore from

Swansea and is recorded as being at exactly

the same time, ie, 9.45 am and date, and felt

    in Dodleston!!

The school, as we now it today has had

an incredible past and it is quite remarable

that in todays fast pace of life, small primary

schools with similar tales to tell such as this

still exist across the country and provide the

basis of education for future generations to

    come.
