Its been a cod month in Handbridge and with the cod has come the snow which has

kept me rather busy. I have been meeting the residents and nding my way around,

getting to know some of the chidren that go to the oca schoo and the adies and

genteman that attend the oca unch cub. You wi see me on foot patro in the

coming weeks as I am now out of training.

    Handbridge New priorities

There have been a number of reports of a suspicious male in the back gardens of residents in the

area. The sightings that were reported to the police were around the areas of Overleigh Road, Queens

Park View, Eaton Road and Eastern Pathway on the 4th of January and 13th January, between the

hours of 1300hrs and 1600hrs. PCSO Smith is asking all residents to report any sighting or anysuspicious activity straight away to the police using the 101 contact number. PCSO Smith supported by

neighbourhood ofcers will be on high visibility foot patrol in the area.

    You said

Residents have reported drug deals occurring and vagrants hanging around the alleyway between

Queens Park Road and the suspension bridge toward the City.

    What we did

High prole foot patrols of the area have been made of the area. Two people have been detained and

are currently being dealt with for minor drug offences by police ofcers. The area will be monitored and

anyone found with drugs will be dealt with appropriately. In response to complaints about homeless persons sleeping in the cemetery PCSO Smith and PCSO

Mckevitt along with the support of the Community Safety Wardens and Chester West and Cheshire

Council have identify the persons and helped move them to suitable accommodation. This will be

continually monitored and PCSO Smith and would encourage residents to report any similar activity

    From the age f 30 the tell-tale

signs f ageing begin t shw n the

skin in the form of ine lines and

    winkles. The effects f patying,

    late nights, smoking, alcohol and

    excessive sun exposure hardly

showed in our skin in our teens and

    20s.

By our 30s our skin is less forgiving after

a night on the town and may be prone to

pigmentation, fatigue, and the irst visible

lines and wrinkles. 30 is an age where we are

hopefully settled in a career and maybe juggling

a career, home and children adding fatigue and

stress to our bodies which in turn shows on our

face. Skin can become thinner and iner, more

sensitive, lacking moisture and duller. This is

due to the slowing down of cell turnover. As the

cells are not being replaced as quickly as they

used to this build up can lead to dry skin. Loss of

collagen, due to smoking and sun damage, can be

responsible for the ine lines and wrinkles that

are appearing around the eye and mouth areas.

Frown and smile lines become more apparent

in our 30s. A reduction of natural moisturising

factors may have started at this age.

At 30 your skin may look great, but it is a

crucial time for skin and a few tweaks to your

normal routine will pay dividends in the future.

A good cleansing routine is essential with a

good quality cleanser. Do not use wipes! Wipes

are full of alcohol. Even the alcohol free ones seem

to contain alcohol! Alcohol makes the skin so dry

and sensitive. Wipes certainly do not perform an

eficient cleanse. The face should be cleansed

in the morning and before retiring to bed. Using

a gentle scrub twice a week will help to remove

the dead cells caused by the slowing down of the

cell turnover. A moisturiser should be applied

morning and evening to the face and neck. A

factor 15 sun protection should be applied every

morning and a higher factor must be applied

when exposed to strong sunlight to prevent any

    further damage.

30 is the best time to start using an anti-ageing

eye cream as a preventative measure. It will work

wonders in reducing ine lines and wrinkles for

    years to come.

At Hough Green Clinic we recommend

PRIORI(R) Advanced AHA skin care containing

key ingredient Lactic Acid which is clinically

proven to stimulate cell renewal. It stimulates

the skin to produce its own moisture from the

inside out in the form of Hyaluronic Acid, which

is the molecule produced by the skin for binding

and holding water. AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids)

help to dissolve the cellular cement that holds

dead cells together, thereby removing unwanted

pigment and rough skin so that the skin appears

    smoother, radiant and youthful.

    Our professional treatments include PRIORI(R)

Skin Renewal Peel. This is a rebalancing peel thatdoes not damage the skin, but slows down the

ageing process working naturally with the skin to

reduce ine lines, pigmentation, dehydration and

    skin break outs.

Even the supermarket chains themselves seem

unaware how complex their supply chains are

and how far they stretch. As far away as Romaniahorses are making their way into our food chain

labelled as beef, via several stops for processing

    on the way.

The supermarkets are now so large that there

are very few processors big enough to deal with

their volume. It is no surprise therefore, that

when one of these processors breaks the law

most of the supermarket chains are implicated.

Personally I have noticed in recent weeks a

lot of new faces in my shop. These are people

obviously concerned with what is happening in

the food industry and are seeking quality and

traceability from a local source. As a member of

EBLEX (English Beef and Lamb Executive) and

part of a audited, monitored system and supply

chain I am able to provide fully traceable local

    food from farm to fork.

As a modern butcher we have moved with the

times and are aware of the demand for qual-

ity ready meals. We make all our ready meals

ourselves daily on our premises using fresh local

    ingredients.

Kevin from Edens of Handbridge provides

me with fresh herbs, fruit and vegetables which

we use in our sausages, burgers and ready mealsnicely complimenting our local meat. Super-

markets are unable to do this and their food is

produced days in advance in factories (some-

times abroad) using masses of preservatives to

    enhance shelf-life.

Local shops cannot beat the convenience of the

one stop shop but we can provide top quality,

great service and the personal touch ,not forget-

    ting great value.

Local shops are the lifeblood of any community

and when they are lost there will be no alterna-

tive the next time a food scandal breaks. Please

    use your local shops.

Summers coming, so why not try croquet?AFTER a long, wet summer and autumn last year and a dreary winter, everyone must be

looking forward to warmer days and longer evenings.

Nows the time to plan ahead. Why not try your hand at croquet? Perhaps you haveplayed garden croquet with family or friends and would like to learn more about the game.

Perhaps you have hung up your boots after playing a more strenuous sport and would

like to switch to a game that involves challenge and skill but does not require the strength

and stamina of more energetic activities. Perhaps the children

have left home and you nd you have more time for a new

    outdoor leisure activity.

Perhaps you have just retired and would like to try something

new. With its handicapping system, croquet is a game that can

be played and enjoyed on equal terms by men and women of

all ages and abilities.Chester Croquet Club meets in Westminster Park. It is a

friendly and successful club with about a hundred members

and is always pleased to welcome new members of all standards from absolute

    beginners to more experienced players.

The next beginners course will be held on Thursday evenings from 6.30 to 8.30pm for

six weeks from 2nd May to 6th June. The fee for the course is 30 but is free for new

members joining the club at a full subscription of 52. Coaching is also available for

people who have played before and would like to improve their skills.

No previous knowledge of the game is needed and all equipment will be provided by the

club. If you would like to enroll or would like more information, please contact the course

coach, Janet Davies, on 01244 350370.

THE children of St Marys Community Nursery School,

in Handbridge, have been celebrating Chinese New

Year - the Year of the Snake.

They found out how Chinese people around the

world celebrate this festival. Highlights have includeddecorating the school in the traditional colours of red

and gold, dressing up and playing in a Chinese house,

making a very big dragon that they used for dragon

dancing and eating Chinese food with chopsticks at a

    banquet.

The children have heard many new Chinese stories

and rhymes but were very pleased to welcome

Treasure Trove Puppets back to the school. Puppeteer

Stephen Sharples told them the story of the Chinese

Willow Pattern Plate with his handmade puppets. Afterthe play the children had the opportunity to look at

some of the puppets and ask Stephen questions about

    his puppets.

    Stephens expains the

    different parts of the story.

    THE governors of The Catholic

    High School have approved the

conversion of the school to an

    academy.

The decision comes afterconsultation with staff, parents,

    partner schools and the Diocese

    of Shrewsbury. It means the

    school will become independent

of the local authority, but will

    remain very much a Catholic

School and part of the family of

    Diocesan schools.

    Speaking after the governors

meeting Peter Devine, chair ofgovernors said: We have great

    ambitions for the students at

    our school, and great ambition

    for the school itself. OFSTED

judged this school to be good,

    with outstanding aspects to its

work. We want to move on now and make

sure that we are aiming for an Outstanding

judgment next time the inspectors call.

Becoming an academy is just part of thisprocess. At our meeting we also discussed

student achievement, the quality of teaching

in the school and the quality of leadership

and management here. Central to this is

the mission and ethos of our school as The

Catholic High School here in Chester. We are

renewing our commitment to working with our

partner primary schools and with our partner

parishes. Our school is and always will be an

    inclusive Catholic school.

Headteacher John Murray added: Our staff

were concerned about what would happen to

them if we converted to an academy, and both

the governors and the Diocese have made it

very clear that their terms and conditions are

    fully protected.

The meeting was attended by Alex Scott,

Director of Schools for the Diocese ofShrewsbury. He explained to the governors

that the school would now be part of a multi-

academy trust which was being set up to

benet the wider family of Catholic schools.

The conversion will take effect from Friday

1st March, and from that point the school

will be an academy, independent of the local

authority. The school will still be called The

Catholic High School, Chester and there will

be no changes to the admissions policy orto the provision for students with additional

    needs.

Students thrive in 4x4 challengeTWO teams of Sixth Form students from theCatholic High School going by the names

of Torque Torque and Deva Centurions,

took part in the Jaguar Land Rover 4x4

In Schools Challenge at the JLR plant in

    Halewood, Liverpool.

    The students have worked studiously

since October last year on the project,

modifying a remote controlled car to specic

requirements, creating a portfolio of work, presentations, social media sites and

nding sponsors to fund the project. Jaguar

Land Rover provided a mentor from the company in the person of Niall Turner who

was available to give technical advice and support. In addition, students were given

additional support by local STEM ambassador, Roger Todd from the IET.

The competition was erce on the day and they were up against many other well-

established teams from in and around the

North of England. Our students presented

their work in various forms to different panels

of judges who scrutinised every aspect indetail. One of the biggest challenges of the

day was the track event in which the teams

completed an off-road course against the

    clock.

The school was rewarded by winning The

Best Rookie Team, Best in Class and The

    Best Track Performance awards. Having

taken the North West titles they are now

going through to the nal at the Big Bang Fair

at the Excel Arena in London on 14th March.

    with Bernard Dennis

    CH4 History

    THE names and careers of

    Isambard Kingdom Brunel,

    George and Robert Stephenson

and Joseph Locke are steeped in the

    industrial history of an emerging

    Victorian age. Their engineering work

    and multitude of constructions would

have signiicantly inluenced the lives of

hundreds of millions of people around

    the world.

There is however, another lesser well

known character whose work with those

aforementioned had an even greater impact

on Victorian lives and his legacy continues

to this day, albeit in an understated manner.

His name is Thomas Brassey and he was

born near Aldford, six miles due southof Chester in November 1805. Thomass

parents, John and Elizabeth, went on to

have a further ive sons and one daughter

and it is said the Brassey family could trace

its ancestry as yeoman farmers back about

eight centuries, most of which was spent in

    Cheshire.

    Recent television programmes by Michael

Portillo and the historian Dan Snow havefeatured the works of famous railway

engineers but sadly overlooked the work

    and achievements of Thomas Brassey!

In fact, mention was made in a television

programme of Sir Samuel Morton Peto

whose company Peto & Betts joined forces

with Thomas Brassey. The company of Peto,

Brassey & Betts built railways all over the

    world, but Brasseys involvement remains

    unmentioned!

From very modest beginnings being brought

up in a farming community and educated in

Chester, Thomas went on to become known

as the greatest railway builder in the world,

yet sadly this humble and unassuming man

rarely has mention in the greater scheme of

the era of the industrial revolution.

His achievements in the realm of civilengineering range from the building of a

simple road bridge over the River Birkett at

Saughall Massie, Wirral when he was 23, to

the construction of the Penkridge Viaduct

in Staordshire. By the end of his incredibly

busy life in 1870, he was responsible for

building about 8,500 miles of railway track

    throughout the world.

Closer to home, Thomas Brassey builtChester Railway Station, which opened in

August 1848 and the railway line between

    Crewe and Holyhead. When completed,

Chester Railway Station had the longest

platforms in the country. He not only built

hundreds of stations, bridges and railway

lines across the country, he also built docks

such as the Victoria Docks in London in

1852. The Docks at Barrow, Birkenhead

and Callao in Peru were also of his work, being constructed during the period 1850

to 1863. In 1861 he undertook to build a

twelve mile stretch of the London Sewer

and it became known as the Second

Wonder of the Industrial World. Cholera

epidemics were a major concern for health

at that time; the construction of this sewer

network certainly helped to change forever

the health and quality of life for Londoners.

The fact the sewer system he constructed is

  • 7/29/2019 Overleigh Roundabout March 2013

    43/48

Not chuffed at all The Chester connection

still in use today is testament

    to his engineering ability.

    His work wasnt just conined

    to Great Britain; his irst

    foreign project was a railway

    line in France, between Paris

    and Rouen in 1841. Further

    major work followed with

    contracts being secured in;

    Argentina, Austria, Australia,

    Canada, Denmark, India,

    East Bengal, Italy, Belgium,

    Bohemia, Holland, Hungary,

    Prussia, Nepal, Norway,

    Spain, Moldavia, Saxony,

    Transylvania, Syria, Persia,

    Russia, Canada and Crimea.

    After his death in November

    1870, the three sons of

    Thomas Brassey created

    a memorial to their father

    and mother Maria in St

    Erasmus Chapel in Chester

    Cathedral. This took the form

of a backcloth to the altar

    inscribed to their memory and

there is also a bust of theirfather to the north side of the

    altar.

The Grosvenor Museum in Chester also has

a bust of Thomas Brassey and there are

plaques commemorating his work in Chester

    Railway Station.

Thomas Brassey was buried in the

churchyard at Catsield, near Hastings in

Sussex. In his will, he bequeathed close on3,500,000 as it is said he had acquired more

self made wealth than any other person in

the country during the nineteenth century.

Perhaps because he was a modest man who

shunned public attention and accolades, his

legacy is little known and its sad even to this

day, his life and work receives scarce public

    acknowledgement.
