WELSH Water is investing 600,000 in

a scheme that will deliver environmentalimprovements to the Dingle Bank area.

The utility company began work last

month to upgrade the wastewater network

in the area which includes installing new

equipment and associated pipe work.

The completed scheme will improve the

performance of the network which will

reduce the number of times unscreened

storm water is released into the River

Dee. This will deliver a boost to theenvironment by improving water quality in

the river.

Work will be conned to the rear gardens

of properties on Dingle Bank.

The company hopes to nish the work

by July.

CHESTER Operatic Society is lookingforward to June when they perform for

This summer the society is performing

one of Gilbert and Sullivans most

exuberant operettas, The Gondoliers.

The audience is transported for a

the two gondoliers marry just the very

girls they wanted only to immediatelyleave them behind as they set sail to rule

Barataria together.

Intrigue and confusion abound in their

kingdom as the Grand Inquisitor discovers

the identity of the true king and we wait

to discover who is really married to whom. Exquisitely and exuberantly wrought with an

endless stream of beautiful melodies and dances, this traditional and colourful production of

The Gondoliers directed by Juliet Miles and Musical Director Graham Pike promises to be

an exciting production.

season has seen mixedfortunes for the ten

Westminster Park FC teams

playing in the Chester and

District Junior League.

The weather has played

havoc with xtures and at

the time of writing teams still

have a number of games to

play but currently the Under

10s Lions have nished topof their group and the U10s

Tigers form is improving

under a new manager. The

U11s in their rst season

together have nished 3rd

in the league against really

tough competition.

The under 7s results are

not reported but they have

had a good season. Thethree under 9s teams, Lions,

Cougars and Tigers have

nished in respectable midtable positions with Lions

leading the way in 5th place.

The Under 12s have had a

tough season having been

promoted to Division One at

the start of the year, through

grit and determination they

are still hopeful of retaining

their Division One status

next year.The Under 13s form has

improved and has seen

them winning three out

of the last four games.

Finally the U14s Warriors

remain an enthusiastic and

committed team that really

enjoys their football.

Away from the eld

Westminster Park FC goesfrom strength to strength.

This year we have launched

the very successful Payas you Play scheme for

Reception, Y1 and Y2

children to give them a taste

of football (Westminster

She was among the Queens Park High

School team who took part in the Young

Enterprise Company programme this year.The year 12 students set up and ran their

own events management company Why E?

Why E? competed against all other

Chester schools who had taken part in the

programme in the Area Board Final at The

Bank of America last month.

Karmen Truong was delighted to be

awarded the title of Chester Young

Enterprise Student of the Year for her

contribution to the team, leadership and

management qualities

All students had been working on a display

stand, in preparation for the event whichincluded information about their experience

of the programme, the company objectives,

nancial information and business plan. As

well as producing the display for the event,

students also had to do a presentation in

front of a panel of judges which included

representatives from the Bank of Scotland

and Hill Dickinson Associates. Rob Eadie,

Harry Amner, Harry Barrett and Aminul

Hassan were impressive with their eloquent

and witty accounts of their experiences.

School goes solarQUEENS Park High School is set to become one

of the greenest schools in Chester when 20,000

solar panels are installed with funding from The

Co-operative.

The school is one of 80 UK schools selected to

receive a grant in the second phase of The Co-

operatives Green Energy for Schools scheme.

The photovoltaic panels are half funded through

The Co-operatives scheme with match funding

from the Governments Low Carbon Building Programme (LCBP).A monitor screen in the school building will display how much energy the panels are

generating and how much carbon dioxide they have saved to date.

Schools will also be able to access their energy data on the Internet, along with educational

materials which teachers can download for use in the classroom.

Sarah Klueter, The Co-operatives senior community manager, said: As well as cutting carbon

dioxide emissions and saving the school money on electricity bills, the solar panels will serve

as a reminder to the whole community of the urgent need to do what we can to tackle climate

change.

Headteacher Andrew Firman added: It is fantastic to be among the schools chosen to receive

free solar panels through this generous Co-operative initiative.Schools have a vital role to play in educating the next generation about climate change and

using this renewable energy technology to power our own premises will help us to bring that

message home to students, parents and staff.

BEN Jones has won the prestigious award

of Vet of the Year 2009.

Ben, who runs the eponymously titled Ben

Jones Veterinary Surgery in Saltney, was

given the award for his understanding and

compassion for his clients pets. Whilst

being extremely knowledgeable, Ben can

reassuringly explain the most complicated

procedures to clients.

Recently he established a home visitscheme for pensioners and visited a

nursing home when an owner was there

as a day patient.

HAVE you noticed that your big toe is sore

when you walk? Maybe you think that the

joint is starting to stiffen and your toe is

not moving as freely as it used to. Perhaps

you also have a bunion or hard skin on

the bottom of your big toe... These are all

indicators that you may have degeneration

or arthritis of the big toe joint.

There are several clinical terms for the

different presentations of arthritis of the big

toe. This time, were going to discuss Hallux

Rigidus and Hallux Limitus.

Hallux is simply the Latin name for the Big

Toe, and if your big toe joint has stiffened up

over time (or after injury) it will either become

completely rigid (hallux rigidus) or it will have a

limited range of movement (hallux limitus).

Self-test: cross your leg so you can hold your

big toe. Push it upwards, and see how far you

can move it towards your shin. If it can dorsiex

or move about two-thirds of a right angle, then

your big toe has a normal range of movement.If you cant do this - or if its painful to do so -

then you may have hallux limitus or rigidus.

What causes Hallux Limitus/Rigidus?

Stiffening of the big toe joints commonly tends

to occur because of overpronation. In other

words, if your feet roll inwards too much, or

you have at feet, you put extra pressure on

the inner border of your foot, and the big toe

joint gets too much wear and degenerates over

time.Other causes include injury/trauma or

medical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis

and gout which predispose people to arthritis

in the joints. These diseases have genetic,

inammatory components and often occur in

specic joint patterns and locations.

What can I do to reduce the pain?

The most logical step is to consider rst aid

self-help when you have an acute attack. This

essentially means that you listen to your feet

and rest when the joint/s become painful!

Your podiatrist can also recommend exercises

to keep the joint mobile; many patients are

surprised at what a few minutes of mobilisationcan achieve each day.

Its also essential that you check your shoes

t properly. Evidence based research has

clearly shown that ill-tting footwear contributes

to hallux rigidus and limitus, although do

not conclude that this refers simply to ladies

wearing tight high-heels! Badly tting footwear

is manifest across men and women with

diverse occupational and sporting activities,

so get your shoe tter, orthotist or podiatristto double check your shoe size and footwear

recommendations.

What will a podiatrist do?

If (after proper diagnosis) simple measures

do not reduce your symptoms, another option

includes the provision of orthotic insoles for

your footwear. Depending on the results of

an hours biomechanical assessment, these

specialist insoles can either be made to

support your big toe joint and reduce painfulmovement, or alternatively, off-load any painful

joint and increase mobility of a restricted joint.

Where necessary, your podiatrist can refer

you for X-ray, and then talk about further

options/referrals as indicated.
