THE Arts Council England has awarded an Artsmark Gold to Queen’s Park High School in recognition of the school’s commitment to, and excellence in, arts education.Since Artsmark began nine years ago,

almost 10,000 awards have been made, with 1649 schools receiving the award this year. Head teacher Andrew Firman said: “I’m de-

lighted that the Arts Council has recognised Queen’s Park’s dynamic arts education pro-gramme. our students have really enjoyed working with a variety of artists from differ-ent disciplines in all areas of the arts. This has included GCSE Music students visiting orchard Recording Studios where their per-formance work was professionally recorded by the in-house music producers. Their work has since been used as GCSE coursework and has been given very high marks. I’d like to congratulate all our staff on their hard work

THIS summer will see the 5th year of the Westminster Park Best Kept Front Garden Competition and the 3rd year for the category of Best Hanging Basket/Container display. All 1,200 front gardens

in the Westminster Park Forum area are automatically considered by the judging panel but previous winners are not eligible for the following four years.Gardens are judged by

what can be seen from the public highway. Approximately 20/30 gardens are normally shortlisted for a second visit and letters will be delivered to every house on the shortlist. The winner receives a

small cash prize and a shield, which they hold for the year.

WESTMINSTER Park Forum members are doing their bit to tackle climate change. They Westminster Park to become a plastic carrier bag-free zone.In the latest forum newsletter linda

Halliday says that over 3,000 plastic bags are given out every week at the four main retail outlets in Westminster Park.She also notes that it will be a

diffi cult task to convince everyone. In a recent Co-op customers’ vote, the Westminster Park store was the only one which rejected getting rid of disposable bags altogetherShe is urging people to log onto climatenetwork.org for

EVERyoNE is welcome to the Westminster Park Impact Day on Saturday 18th July.The Westminster Park Forum are organising the free day as a way of bringing the community together where people can give their views on matters of local interest.It will be held outside the shops on Five Ashes Road. This

will be an open surgery between 10am and 2pm.They will highlight the forum’s past and current programme

of activity and want to give people the opportunity to share any ideas for new activities or social events. Local police community support offi cers have also

promised to attend to listen to any crime concerns. Members of our low Carbon Group will also be present

and there will also a family treasure hunt which is free to enter. Another date for the diary is the popular quiz night, which

this year will be on Saturday 10th october in the Community Centre hall.

CHESTER’S fi rst BMX track 1200 newly planted trees were among £200,000 worth of environmental improvements unveiled at Westminster Park last month. The works also included upgrading the cricket pitch and installing new and challenging play equipment for tots to teens.The lord Mayor of

Chester, Councillor John Ebo, led the celebrations as he opened the latest phase of Westminster

Park developments which started some fi ve years ago following extensive local consultations. Paul Makin of the Friends

of Westminster Park said: “Westminster Park is an important local space for people to enjoy, but eight years ago it was suffering from lack of attention and investment. The Friends and the council, by working together, have been able to make signifi cant improvements.”

THIS month we’re going to discuss one of the most painful foot conditions - Plantar Fasciitis. If you have suffered from this (or are currently suffering from this) then you will know how debilitating it feels to walk on a foot that is completely sore across the sole and heel areas.What is Plantar Fasciitis?Quite simply, plantar fasciitis is a chronic infl ammation [of the

sole of foot muscles] at the site of the attachment of the plantar fascia to the medial tubercle of the calcanuem [heel bone]. 1If you had a muscle infl ammation in other body locations, like

your arm or neck, you could simply rest the affected area until it subsided and got better. for the anti-infl ammatory tablets (if you can take them) and pop some extra padding in your shoe. You then realise the infl ammation is progressing and nothing seems to help!This is where your Podiatrist can help. After a brief biomechanical assessment, your podiatrist will be

able to tell you what the cause of the problem is. This is an important factor to bear in mind: Plantar Fasciitis can arise because of different reasons. your podiatrist will be able to locate whether your pain has come from a limited range of ankle movement, tight calf muscles or a fascial enthesis 2 (if it has been long and slow in coming and is linked with a heel ‘spur’). your heel pain or plantar fasciitis may also be caused by a bad walking pattern. your podiatrist will

especially want to check your mechanics at ‘push-off’ and changeover at the mid-stance phase of gait (walking). once the cause of your pain has been isolated, your podiatrist can then provide appropriate treatment.

An appropriate fi rst line of treatment in some cases may be the application of ‘strapping.’ Strapping - or taping - stuck onto the skin of your foot can reduce improper movement where needed whilst promoting appropriate fl exion in the correct locations. You can then wear your socks or tights over any strapping and taping.Your podiatrist will also discuss orthoses with you. These are specialist insoles that fi t inside your

footwear and are made from a cast of your foot. Bespoke orthotics are the indication for plantar fasciitis, as the ‘arch’ area of the thin shell needs to perfectly fi t your foot’s arch to mimic the action of the plantar fascia. If you use over-the-counter orthotics, foot pads, gel supports, shock absorbers, etc, you will be unlikely to achieve the same perfect ‘arch contour’ fi t.

AWAy from Westminster the world looked a much brighter place last month as evidence continues to mount that the fi rst green shoots spotted back in the spring are genuinely those of recovery as opposed to weeds. According to the latest data available on the UK economy, the

recession may well have fi nished in May. Mid-week it emerged that the services sector – which crucially accounts for around 75% of Britain’s economic output – actually grew in May for the fi rst time in over a year. Stronger than expected results in the CIPS/Markit barometer of services conditions – the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) - gave another boost to hopes that the worst of the recession has passed. The PMI survey’s headline reading climbed to 51.7 for last month, up from 48.7 in April – its sixth consecutive rise which took it above the key 50 mark that signals renewed expansion. Purchasing managers’ surveys, measuring business-to-business activity, monitor the global economy’s heartbeat, and after the convulsions of last year, signs of recovery in the Markit surveys came through fi rst in emerging economies, most notably China. The fact that Britain has now joined them is encouraging many economists to call the bottom

of the recession. Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit which produces the surveys for the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) said that, whilst only services had so far returned to growth, a “broad-based turning point” had been passed. “The rise in the UK index is notable because comparable indexes for other European countries remain fi rmly mired in contraction territory” he added. Malcolm Barr, an economist at JP Morgan, was bullish before the data and is convinced the

recession is over for all intents and purposes. “When we talk about the day the economy went back above zero it will be the May data that did it” he commented. Some economists though were more cautious, pointing to the fact that the relationship between the PMI and offi cial gross domestic product (GDP) fi gures had been less precise than usual since last autumn and were no guarantee that growth would resume this year.Indeed, the Director-General of the Institute of Directors warned last week of the dangers of

believing that the UK economy is through the worst of the fi nancial crisis. Miles Templeman told The Times “We are in the worst of the recession now; to say that the worst is behind us is nonsense”. Adding to this view, the latest survey from the CBI shows that companies reported that credit

conditions remained tough in May but do expect the situation to stabilise. Indeed, lending to British companies and individuals fell during April, according to Bank of England data which revealed that lending to “private non-fi nancial corporations” (the business sector excluding banks) fell by £4.7bn in April. However, the Bank did report a pick-up in mortgage lending on April with some 43,201 home

loans approved – the highest level since May last year and advances in May are expected to be higher again, although still well off the highs of 80,000 two years ago. The data was refl ected in house prices with the Halifax index rising 2.6% in May – the largest jump since october 2002 – encouraging views that the market may be stabilising.

Ingredients:

180ml milk1 Vanilla Pod250g White Chocolate250 ml Whipping Cream1 ½ leaves Gelatine

Method:

1. Slice vanilla pod down the middle, scrape the insides into a pan with the milk and place the vanilla pod in also, then place on the stove to boil.2. Place gelatine in cold water to soften.3. once soft, place the gelatine into the hot milk and whisk. Then with the white chocolate in a bowl, pour the hot milk over the chocolate.4. Stir the white chocolate and the liquid until the chocolate has melted then leave to one side until cool.5. Semi-whip the cream, then gently fold into the white chocolate mixture. Place into desired moulds/serving bowls.

HoPEFUlly this summer will be sunny so we can enjoy our gardens whether it is dining outside or just lounging about in the sun. Some herbs are great for adding to summer cooking. Mint is wonderful when added to Pimms

and lemonade or pop a sprig in the pan when cooking new potatoes or peas. There are many different varieties of mint but grow in a pot or confined to an area where it can be contained, as many of them will invade your garden. In the vegetable garden, plant out winter leeks and brassicas such as broccoli and sprouts. Sow

salads and French beans for a late crop. Do net fruit such as strawberries and blueberries. I tried to grow blueberries last year and had a crop developing nicely until the birds ate every one just before they ripened! Raspberries seem to be largely immune probably as the fruit is not so easy for birds to eat. July is a great month for perennials and many come in bright colours so take a trip to your local

garden centre or visit some of our wonderful gardens to see what is doing well in July. Achilleas are sun-loving flowering plants that come in a range of colours from yellow, orange and

red. Anthemis with yellow or white daisy flowers will continue into August or even September if you cut off the dead flowers. Crocosmia are also at their best in July with their sword shaped leaves and spikes of red, yellow or orange flowers. They may well need some support. Cooler colours of white and blue often come to life in the evening and seem to have an inner

glow in fading light. Try white dahlias with their varied flower shapes. Many hardy geraniums have white or blue flowers and some varieties will often flower twice if the first flowers are cut off after flowering. The same also applies to Centaurea Montana the perennial cornflower. Hydrangreas are one of the best shrubs for flowering in July with a range of flower shapes from

delicate lacecap to huge mopheads and some with cones shaped flowers. They prefer moist soil and will take light shade but will also grow in full sun. Give them enough space to grow. They flower on last years wood so if you cut them back, you may not have flowers the next year.

True story: In 1972 a man walked for 16 miles with a milk bottle on his head.

FoR many generations Handbridge was the home of a close knit community of mainly fishermen’s

families, many of whom were related to each other.

Buckley, Gerrard, Bellis, Price, Randles, Spencer, Totty, Johnson and White were the names of most families involved to son, Uncle to nephew basis, passing on the skills, nets, boats and valuable knowledge of the river and the estuary obtained from many years of hard experience.

The season used to run from midnight on 1st March until the end of August. There was no fishing allowed on Friday, Saturday

or Sunday until on minute past midnight. The season is now much shorter, from midnight on 1st May, with fishing restricted to below river from Saltney Ferry footbridge, which replaced the higher Ferry, operated by the Manifold family since 1790. Fluke can be fished without a licence as they are caught out on the sandbanks of the estuary, and very tasty they are too.

Occasionally the fishing nets were soaked in a tar mixture to prevent the from rotting. They were then hung up to dry on rows of wooden posts cut from large tree branches driven or dug into the ground, many of which took root and are now mature trees. The area is known as the “stakes” and

It’s a fact: In the USA an average of 55.700 people are injured by their own jewellery

the nearby white cottage is called “nowhere”. At one time this was two cottages, Nos 1 and 2 Nowhere. This name is thought to have originated from the fact that to the right is the old cemetery therefore “No life”. Above, standing on the sandstone rock, is overleigh Manor, the “High life” and to the left are the Fishermen’s cottages supposed to represent “low life” with Nowhere in the middle. There are no doubt other versions of the origins of the name, but I think this one is as good as ay.

Football and boxing were two of the popular pastimes of many of the local lads. Gordon Gunson went on to play for Liverpool and Charlie Leyfield played for Everton. During the 1920s and 1930s boxing matches were often held at the rear of the Red lion in the former Rope walk area near to where the water tower was built in 1935.

Jimmy Walsh and Fred Tiltson were two local boxers who turned professional. Fred spent some time over in Canada and Jimmy went on to win the British lightweight title.

With the combination of pollution, silting, lower water table, plus intensive deep fishing at sea and now the most recent poisoning of the Dee with an unknown chemical, which must be one of the most evil and mind acts of vandalism to have occurred in Chester in the last century, (with the exception of pulling down the old Market Hall), has devastated fish stocks for many years to come as well as affecting much of the wildlife. It could well mean, sadly, the end of centuries of salmon fishing in the Dee along with many of its associated customs

and traditions, such as the names along the bank where the nets were drawn in; lane End, Crane, Thistles and Marshead. At one lime there were 14.

The Rector’s prize, started in 1882, was a ton of coal for the first salmon caught in the season. later Rectors awarded one guinea.The final journey, that so many before have taken to their last resting place and which I feel is a most touching and moving occasion, when tribute is paid to the river by the fisherman’s hearse passing over the two bridges, the old Dee and the Grosvenor, in a final salute of mutual respect. A most fitting end to a disappearing way of life.
