Big Dee Day Clean-up which took

place recently has been one of thebiggest and best yet!

The full stretch of the River Dee was

targeted around west heshire to the

lintshire border by 72 volunteers made up

of local residents and businesses.

The initiative was backed by heshire West

and hester ouncil, Flintshire ounty

Council, the Environment Agency and

volunteers.

ver the two days around 168 bags olitter, four shopping trolleys, and a bulky

industrial grinder was cleared away and a

pick-up truck was loaded with otsam which

included planks of wood - all collected from

the banks of the River Dee.

Councillor Riley said: This was one of the

best Big Dee Day lean-ups ever.

It was extremely success ul and I would

stuck in. We all have our own thoughts and

eelings about the River and it now looksmuch more attractive for residents and

visitors.

CRIMEFILE

CRIMES reported to the police in this area recently include the following

Lache Lane - A would-be thief was disturbed by the occupant and ran off. Soon

afterwards, the same man was seen on CCTV breaking into another address on LacheLane and stealing a quantity of electrical items.

Lache Lane A thief deactivated the alarm on the garden shed and stole a Honda

lawnmower, valued 1000n.

Beeston Pathway An engagement ring and 60 Euros were stolen after the thief got in

through an unlocked back door.

Cross Hey - A Buddha statue was stolen from the front garden of a house.

Elder Drive - A shed was broken into and a power drill, hedge trimmer and lawn mower

were taken.

Hawthorn Road - Thieves broke into a shed.

Handbridge Flower Club

This months meeting is on Thursday 15th November at 1.45pm in St. Marys Parish Hall

when we welcome back Joan Twigger from Preston who will put us in seasonal mood with

Local policing priorities have been set following engagement with the local community and based on

information fed back at surgeries held with local residents:

Edgars Field Park and Playground

High visibility and reassurance patrols within Edgars Park and playground due to anti social

behaviour problems that have occurred previously

Plans to address the issue: PCSO Jo Pendrey and Community Safety Wardens will

ensure patrols take place over coming weeks in order to combat any anti social behaviour

issues that arise.

You said The Meadows In previous years due to the warmer weather we have

experienced issues with under age drinking and camping on the meadows in particular on

weekday evenings and weekend days. High Visibility foot patrols to continue in the area.

We did PCSO Jo Pendrey along with her colleagues from the Chester Outer

Neighbourhood Policing Team, Community Safety Wardens, Park Rangers and the

Riverwatch team have provided high visibility patrols over previous weeks. Individuals

found camping there were advised and moved on from the location. No further issues were

found or reported.

FAKE or counterfeit cosmetics andskin care products are becoming

big business via the internet.Purchasers are lured by the low cost

of their favourite product on popularwell known websites. However, for thisso-called bargain you may be getting awhole lot more than you bargained for!Due to the ingredients used in thesecheap fakes you may be lucky enoughonly to suffer from a nasty red rashor swollen face and eyes, but there isthe worrying potential for long termdamage.

In a recent report, fake designermascaras, foundations and blusherswere found to contain traces to highlevels of mercury, lead, copper,arsenic, cadmium and in some cases

excessive levels of bacteria. Despitethe packaging and the contents looking

convincingly identical to the real thingthe actual contents of the cosmeticswas far from it.

from a fantastic educationalvisit to the rich and diverse

cultural city of Barcelona.

The annual visit takes in art,

architecture, sport and science,

as well as making time for eating and relaxing

in one of the worlds most remarkable cities.

Thirty students of art or Spanish were given

the opportunity to broaden and develop their

skills.

The tour began straight from the airport, witha trip to the FC Barcelona stadium, the Camp

Nou.

On Friday they visited Montserrat or jagged

mountain. Front row seats in the asilica o

the monastery enabled the group to clearly see

and listen to the stunning voices of the Catalan

equivalent of the Vienna Boys Choir. They

then took the funicular railway with its amazing

views to the top of the mountain and walked

back down past the enormous St Michaelscross. Back at Vilanova Park there was no time

to rest as they had to t in a water polo match

efore dinner.

aturday morning began with a walk through

the bustling market in Vilanova, with lunch in

Gaudis Parque Guell which boasts the longest

mosaic ench in the worl . This was followe

by a thought-provoking visit to the Joan Miro

art gallery which ended on a sun drenched sun

terrace full of strange sculptures.

n Sunday the 3D presentation on Natural

Selection was the highlight of the visit to

the science museum which included many

interesting exhibits like a working ants nest

and a giant ice cube. After lunch it was off

to enjoy a guided tour of the breath-taking

agrada Familia cathedral. It is hoped that this

controversial monument will be completed by

2026 to mark the centenary of Gaudis death.

walk round the garden to see thoseplants that give us a li t in dark days.

Flowers are in short supply so if you arelucky and have the right conditions forgrowing Nerines, then you may have someof their exotic pink owers still around. Theylike a well drained soil in sun such as at thebase of a wall to keep the frost from rottingthe bulbs.

I nd that perennials such as Pulmonariahave lovely leaves in autumn. They put outnew growth when the soil becomes wetterafter summer. They look lovely paired withHeuchera with deep red foliage to offset thesilver blotched leaves of the Pulmonaria..

Ferns also provide green in darker placesso consider the Asplenium or Harts Tongue

ferns with glossy green leaves or Polystichumsetiferum, the soft shield fern that will give afan of cool green colour.

Berries on Sorbus, the Mountain Ash maystill be around although the red berries seemto be eaten by birds rst but orange, yellowand cream berries are left well into winter.

Rose hips like little pot bellied pots on Rosarugosa varieties are bright red, bringing asplash of colour.

Jobs to do around the garden includenishing planting tulip bulbs which can go

in later than daffodils. Also gather up leavesfrom the lawn and those smothering smaller

plants. Stack them in a separate compost binor put in a bin liner to rot down. Keep theleaves moist to encourage rotting and after acouple of years you will have superb compost.

Ponds should be netted if they are neartrees to stop leaves falling into the waterand rotting. Remove any dead foliage fromwaterside plants and water lilies.

I cut down any dying foliage that will not lookgood when frosted but I tend to leave plantslike Sedums in place because their owerheads look lovely dusted with frost. Slightlytender plants can have foliage left in place toact as a mulch and protect them from coldtemperatures.

Dig up dahlia tubers, remove the foliageand store in a frost free and mouse free placeover winter to dry out. They can be planted inspring to grow again next year.
