THERE was plenty to see and do at the Handbridge St Marys Chrch garden party.

Visitors were entertained by a jazz band and children enjoyed the giant boncy castle

Right now Im having amnesia and deja vu at the same time.

A local athor, Daisy Dawes visited St. Marys Nrsery School last month. Daisy

had her rst book, Get Ahead Fred, published this year. The Dragony and Buttery

grops and their teacher, Mrs Longhrst enjoyed the story so mch that they wrote

a letter to Daisy, inviting her to come to visit the nrsery. They had lots of fn with

Daisy, who read her book and showed the children the models that she sed toillstrate it. Becase Fred loves hats, the children sang him a song abot different

sorts of hats and then had a go at designing a new hat to add to his collection.

UVA rays are responsible for most skin

cancers and the cause of the signs of ageing

i.e. wrinkles and brown age spots. UVB rays

are responsible for the burn or redness to

the skin. Both UVA and UVB rays can cause

cancer so wearing an SPF containing protec-

tion from both is essential.

An SPF15 blocks just over 93% of UVB

rays, whilst an SPF30 blocks 96.6% of UVBrays. Unfortunately an SPF50 still does not

give you 100% protection and contains a

higher level of chemicals that can cause ir-

ritation to the skin.

Sun screens containing vitamins A and C

protect the skin additionally. Vitamin A can

protect the DNA from damage. Vitamin

C helps protect the skin from free radical

damage resulting in less pigmented skin

problems like brown spots to frequentlyexposed areas such as face, neck, dcollet,

forearms and the backs of hands. People

who have a higher intake of vitamin C in their

diet seem to have fewer problems with skin

pigmentation. Vitamin C applied topically will

give added protection.

Young children and babies are most at risk

and must be completely protected. It is dur-

ing the formative years that the damage is

done. The evidence of that sun damage willnot show itself until later in life.

Those of you prone to acne outbreaks, do

you fnd that your skin is more spotty during

warmer weather? The reason for this is that

your skin produces 80% more oil in the heat!So do not try to dry the skin in the sun, as

two weeks after sun exposure you will suffer

a major eruption. Use oil free products on

your skin, (cleansing at least twice daily), oil

free sun block and use a gentle facial scrub 3

times a week. Try to keep cool, particularly at

night. Do not sleep on your stomach or with

your face in contact with the pillow. Sleeping

on your back will keep your face coolest!

Q. I have a lot of ne, blonde hairs on my face which I want

to remove. I have been told that the hairs are far too ne for

electrolysis and too fair for IPL or laser. I have tried waxing

bt my skin is too sensitive for it. Wold threading be a good

option?

A. For readers who may not know what threading is. It is a

method of mass hair plcking sing a thin, twisted cotton

strand which is rolled over the skin plcking the hairs

from their follicles. It is an ancient method of hair removal

originating from Asian and Arabic contries and has recently

gained poplarity in the West.In answer to yor qestion, threading it only a

temporary method of hair removal bt can be a

good alternative to the hair removal methods yo

mentioned in yor qestion and for the reasons

yo have otlined. De to the heat of the wax

and the fact that wax adheres to the skin as well

as the hair it can be too aggressive for some skin

conditions. Threading can be a good option for

sensitive skins as there is no heat and very little

plling on the skin. However, do expect somediscomfort and some redness.

Q. I am getting married this smmer. What is the

best way of ensring that my lipstick stays on all

day?

A It is difcult to make lipstick stay on all day but

the best method for ensring that yor lipstick

lasts for as long as possible is to rstly ensure

that yor lips are free from dead skin cells by

sing a light exfoliant a few days before yor

wedding followed by a lip balm. Then on the

day apply a little primer followed by a light layer

of fondation, which is set with powder. Apply

a lip liner the same color as yor lipstick and

then apply yor lipstick with a lip brsh, which

ensres that the color gets into all the tiny

crevices in yor lips. Blot with a tisse, lightly

powder and then reapply yor lipstick. This

shold get yo throgh a fair amont of kissing

of relatives and possibly even the wedding

breakfast! Bt carry the lipstick with yo, jst incase.
