HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE
CHILDREN WHO STUTTER
CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stutter-ing is a frustrating and em-barrassing problem for mil-lions of people, but it can be especially tough on elemen-tary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-lan-guage pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stut-tering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Ac-tion: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

Attention Nurses!!
Consuming excessive amounts of sodium not only af-fects your health but also may aff ect your appearance. A diet that’s rich in sodium has long been linked to a host of health problems, including high blood pressure, stroke, kidney disease, and stomach cancer. But consuming too much sodium also leads to increased water retention, which can cause weight gain and make men and women appear puff y and bloated. According to the American Heart Association, the recommended daily sodium intake is 1,500 milligrams. But the AHA notes that the average American consumes more than double that amount on a daily basis, and Health Canada asserts that Canadians also eat roughly the same amount of sodium each day as their American counterparts. While sodium is an essential nutri-ent, the human body does not need a lot of it to reap its benefi ts. Bread, processed meats and soups are some of the major contributors of dietary sodium, so men, women and even children, who the AHA notes are far more likely to develop high blood pressure as adults if they consume a high-sodium diet as a child, should study packaging on these items to ensure they aren’t overloaded with sodium.

REMEMBER ALMOSTGRACIOUS Virgin Mary that never was it known that any-one who fled to thy protection employed thy help or sought thine intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this con-fidence, I fly unto thee. Oh Virgins of Virgins my Mother, to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sor-rowful, oh Mother of the word incarnate, despise not my pe-titions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Thank you Blessed Mother Mary, for prayers answered, and inter-ceding on my behalf with your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus.
I THANK YOU LORD WITH all my heart in the presence of angels to you I sing, I bow low towards your holy temple, I praise your name for your mercy and faithfulness, for you have exhalted over all your name and your promise. On the day I cried out, you answered and strengthened my spirit. Dear Lord thank you for hearing and answer-ing my prayer. Thank you St. Jude and St.Rita for interced-ing on my behalf. I will en-courage devotion to you al-ways.
ARE YOU SAVED? Are you sure? You can know with ab-solute certanly- the Bible is clear. Interested? 792-6725

Many animals hibernate throughout the winter. Humans are aff orded no such luxury. In fact, living a sedentary lifestyle during the colder months of the year can actually prove det-rimental to human health.
Exercise is benefi cial any time of the year, but it can be espe-cially so during the winter months when colder temperatures force many people inside, where they live more sedentary lifestyles than they do during the rest of the year. Adapt-ing your exercise habits in the winter can help you make it through the colder months in great shape.
There is no reason to stop exercising when the temperature drops. The American Heart Association says working out in the cold weather has distinct advantages over working out in hot and humid conditions. When the weather is cold, you
may be able to work out longer and harder because the heat won’t zap your energy levels, and exercising outdoors in the winter is a great way to get small doses of sunlight that can improve mood and help your body produce more vitamin D.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says exercise can help boost your immune system, which can help you fi ght colds and fl u symptoms. Just a few minutes of exercise each day can help prevent simple viral and bacterial infec-tions as well.
Working out in the winter may help you burn more calories than in warmer seasons. Research published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that race times are faster in cold weather than in warmer temperatures. Quicker runs or walks can burn more calories.
STAY FIT WHEN TEMPERATURES DROP

(NAPSI)—Whether you’re considering cashing in on your equity, downsizing, trading up, moving for a change of scenery or relo-cating for better prospects, a few smart investments and improvements can help your home stand out from the competition so you get top dollar. Even if you’re not planning on moving any-time soon, these strategies can maximize your home’s value and increase its mar-ketability:
• Sprucing up the exterior. If you think you’ll have a few years before you move, work on your landscaping now to give plants time to mature. Look for easy-care peren-nials such as hostas, which multiply on their own. If you have less time, you can still
achieve a quick makeover by power washing paths and siding, painting or up-grading your front door and keeping the lawn watered and weeded.
• Removing eyesores inside. Some minor adjustments can help buyers recognize what’s great about your home. Swap outdated fi x-tures, remove wallpaper and give everything a deep clean. Replacements don’t have to be top of the line; they just need to eliminate hang-ups for potential buy-ers.
• Improving the kitchen—to a point. You probably won’t recoup the cost of a full kitchen renovation but smaller projects such as upgrading appliances and painting or refi nishing cabi-
nets can modernize the space.
• Refreshing rooms with neu-tral paint. This is a time-hon-ored tip for a reason. While seeing your favorite bold hues on the walls makes you happy, potential buyers may not agree. A fresh coat of neutral paint can help them envision their own belong-ings in the space.
• Focusing on energy ef-fi ciency. The right energy-smart upgrades can assure buyers they’re seeing an effi cient home where util-ity bills can be minimized. Adding insulation to the attic and walls can make a dramatic improvement in many homes. Consider the windows as well.
