The Heart of Your Backyard: Real Backyard Decks Deserve Real Wood(MS) -- The deck is the heart of a backyard. It’s where the family gathers for dinner, the perfect spot for grill-ing, a great place to hang out with friends and the ideal location for relaxing after a long day. Whether you’re thinking of building a new deck or your old one needs resurfacing, be sure and choose the right decking product: choose real wood.

Building a Deck. Thinking of building a brand new deck? What a great way to enhance your backyard! According to the 2010-2011 Cost vs. Value Report from Remodeling magazine, homeowners can expect to recoup 72.8 percent (on average) of the cost of building a wood deck vs. only 66.2 percent if building with composites. Deck substructures are built using pressure-treated wood anyway; if it’s strong and durable enough to hold up your deck, it’s strong enough to actually be your decking surface.

Pressure-treated wood is a builder favorite and has been the number one decking material for decades. It’s natural, real -- and it looks fantastic.

Resurfacing a deck. If you already have a wood deck but it’s more than 20 years old, consider a resurfacing project. This is where the decking surface is replaced, while the substructure remains. (It’s always a good idea to have a decking professional check the entire deck for soundness.) Resurfacing is easy, and it’s a great way to refresh your outdoor living areas without blowing your budget.

Maintaining a deck. Every building material designed for outdoor use requires maintenance; luckily, real wood decks are very easy to maintain. Once a year, check your deck to see if it needs cleaning or perhaps another coat of sealant. Perform the cup of water test: if a cup of water poured on the deck boards immediately soaks into the wood, it’s time to apply water repellant.

Why choose wood? Your deck should mesh with your backyard -- be sure your decking material is an exten-sion of nature, with all the beauty, strength and durability you’d expect. Pressure-treated wood is your most natural decking option: it’s easy to fi nd, easy to use, requires no special tools, and it’s affordable. Wood doesn’t conduct heat like other decking materials can, meaning no burned feet in the summertime. Treated wood is impervious to rot and pests and it’s proven to be people- and pet-safe.

Concerned about our forests? Choosing wood for any home improve-ment project is a very wise environmental decision. Thriving, sustainably managed forests create a healthier environment for all of us. Choosing forest products -- wood -- encourages US landowners to keep replanting trees; the forest industry plants more trees than they harvest every single year, ensuring wood will be around for generations to come. Wood is one of the only naturally renewable building products available, and the only energy required to manufacture it comes from the sun. You can’t get much more green than that.

For more information on building or resurfacing a real wood deck, visit www.realoutdoorliving.com. Free information includes the Authentic Deck Guide, with complete information on wood deck upkeep, construction and building material selection; easy do-it-yourself free downloadable plans and podcasts; maintenance information; a fun and fast “Pressure-treated 101” video and much more. Check back frequently: we’re always adding new plans, new photos and new information.

Basement Versatility(MS) -- These days every inch of space in the home counts. So, when considering building a new home, it makes sense to consider building both “up and down” to maximize your living space.

“Basements are like ‘found space’ in the home because they’re so versatile that you can make a well-built basement an extension of your living areas,” says Jim Costello, president of Superior Walls. “To maximize basement space, it’s critical to construct the area below ground with a pre-cast insulated foundation system that’s energy-effi cient and damp free. This way the basement area is a welcoming, active part of the home rather than a ‘dump all’ storage area.”

Costello recommends constructing a basement with Xi wall panels. Each precast foundation panel is construct-ed with a concrete face shell, backed by 21/2-inches of DOW Styrofoam insulation. Steel reinforced concrete walls create a permanent barrier against sidewall water penetration, making the basement system damp-proof.

“These foundation systems are very popular with hom-eowners because you can create door and window open-ings in them to access natural light,” says Costello. “By making the right decisions at the time of construction to use pre-cast insulated foundation systems, homeown-ers are making a long-term investment in their family’s happiness and in the resale value of their house.”

Available Alternatives to Granite CountertopsGranite has proven a popular choice for kitchen renovations over the last several years. But concern about the potential health implications of granite, not to mention cost and mainte-nance, is causing many homeowners to reconsider granite for countertops and backsplashes.

It’s hard to deny the appeal of granite’s appearance. It can be beautiful and complement many design styles. However, it tends to be porous, and the Food and Drug Adminstration has said that it may harbor potentially dangerous bacteria if not properly cleaned. Furthermore, there is evidence that granite may give off high levels of radon depending on where the stone was harvested.

Fortunately for homeowners who like the look of granite but want something that’s more affordable and easier to maintain, there are many alternatives available that mimic the look of granite without the health concerns.

Solid surface products that are made with composite materials are growing in popularity. Many contain quartz or other stone mixed with plastic and glass binders. These products tend to be easier to maintain than granite, and many come backed with manufacturer warranties.

Due to the solid surface materials of the past, these types of materials have garnered a bad name. But new innovations are so high-quality, that many consumers have diffi culty deci-phering between real granite and look-alikes.

Engineered stone is another option for homeowners. These products are made from bits of natural stone mixed with fi llers and offer the same scratch- and heat-resistance as granite.

Depending on the material, solid surface products and engi-neered stone can cost anywhere from $35 to $125 per square foot. These surfaces are more cost-effi cient than granite, which can start at around $50 per square foot.

If cost is not a factor and durability the chief concern, hom-eowners can consider another material -- concrete. Concrete can be tinted or patterned in adherence to a homeowner’s de-sired design style. Because it can be labor-intensive to install, the price of concrete will likely rival granite.

Homeowners who want to buck tradition and consider a coun-tertop material other than granite have plenty of attractive and durable options from which to choose. SH112408

Hardwood Flooring InnovationsNowadays, homeowners renovating their homes often look to wood fl ooring to replace existing fl oors. Hardwood is coveted by buyers, and its clean, inviting look makes it a neutral design element that goes with many different types of decor.

Today’s hardwood fl ooring is not the hardwood of the past. There are many options from which to choose, including varied colors, types of wood, patterns, and inlays. In addition, innovations in sealants enable hardwood to be durable and hold up better against the daily grind.

About 25 years ago, a homeowner basically had to settle for wood fl ooring that was solid oak strips at 2.25 inches wide. The strips were nailed in place by a carpenter and fi nished on site. Now, more than half of hardwood is fabricated and prefi nished at a factory and is much easier to install -- even by the homeowner himself.

The range of styles and colors is also very extensive. Planks can be chosen in thin strips or wider options. Native hardwoods are available, as are offshore woods from different countries. Finishes can also be customized with higher gloss or matte choices.

For homeowners interested in going green, hardwood fl ooring also presents many options. A growing trend is using reclaimed wood that is recycled and then refi nished into new items. Lumber may be reclaimed from old buildings, railroads, barns, homes, and even river bottoms. The varied his-tory of the wood adds to its aesthetic appeal.

It’s important for homeowners to know that the price point for hardwood will vary depending on species and fi nish. However, the way the boards are cut will also be a consideration for homeowners. Plainsawn or fl atsawn boards have growth rings that run at anywhere from 0 to 45-degree angles to the wide surfaces of the board, with lots of loops and swirls. Quartersawn boards have rings that run from 45- to 90-angles and are not as lively in pattern. Quartersawn boards will expand in thickness depending on moisture and temperature. Plainsawn will shrink and swell widthwise. Quartersawn tend to take wear better and more evenly, contributing to their typically more expne-sive price tag.

Homeowners can also choose among engineered wood products, which are essentially several layers of wood veneer adhered to a solid backing of plywood and sealed. This layered construction can make engineered fl ooring more stable and durable than tra-ditional hardwood fl ooring. That means it can be used in rooms where hardwood was long frowned upon, like basements and bathrooms.

Wood fl ooring will continue to garner mass appeal and be the preference of many homeowners. With new innovations and availability, there are more options than ever for discerning homeowners. SH112418

Window Safety Tips(MS) -- How often should family fi re drills be held? What type of glass should you have in windows to help prevent noise penetration and discourage intruders? The experts at Simonton Windows(R) offer fast tips for staying safe in your home and enjoying your windows.

Tip #1 -- Practice safety drills regularly. Small children tend to “hide” from fi re, so make sure children are familiar with escape routes and know how to move quickly out of the home.

Tip #2 -- For homes with bedrooms on second fl oors or higher, make sure safety escape chain ladders are under the bed in every room. Practice operating the window with older children and show them how to use chain ladders.

Tip #3 -- If a door is not safe to exit through during a fi re, exit through an open window or use an escape ladder. Do not break the glass of the window, because it could cause injury.

Tip #4 -- If you live in a neighborhood with lots of active children, or one that is prone to crime, install windows with laminated glass -- at least for the fi rst fl oor of the home. In these units, two panes of glass are adhered to a durable plastic interlayer, much like a car windshield. So, if a stray baseball hits a window, the glass will shatter, but broken pieces remain adhered to the interlayer, preventing glass fallout inside the home. The plastic interlayer is also puncture-resistant, frustrating potential intruders.

Tip #5 -- Remember that window screens are only designed only to keep insects outside -- they will not support the weight of a child or family pet.

Tip #6 -- Looking to protect your home from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays? Request Low E glass in your windows to help reduce the fading of carpet, furniture and window treatments.

Tip #7 -- When windows are opened for ventilation, only open what young children cannot reach, such as the top portion of a Simonton Double Hung window.

Tip #8 -- Keep furniture (including cribs), or anything children can climb, away from windows.

Tip #9 -- Before ordering windows for your home, make sure to examine the unit’s locking system. Multi-point locks provide more protection against intruders and make it more diffi cult for curious young children to operate.

Tip #10 -- If you need to use window guards on the interior of your windows, make sure they are operable and can be easily removed. Practice detaching the guards with children in case they need to exit through a window in an emergency.

For more helpful window tips, visit www.simonton.com. SH112464

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail)Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con-ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. DEAR HEART OF Jesus In the past I have asked for many favors, this time I ask you for this very special one. Take it Dear Jesus and place it within your bro-ken heart where your father will see it. Then in your merciful eyes, it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise to publish it and your favor will be granted. R. G.

John Bove’s journey to a chef and restaurateur began with the in uence of his parents. Mary and John Bove were immigrants from Italy. John’s whole life was Italian and he thought everyone was Italian until he went to school. John’s rst introduction into the restaurant business was in 1948 when his parents opened Mary’s Luncheonette on River Street in Troy. John was twelve at the time and he along with the whole family would help out in the restaurant. John remembers that during his lunchtime he would go home to wash dishes with his Pop, Scerbo. In the fall of 1959, due to the failing health of his Mother, John was offered the restaurant by his parents, but passed on the opportunity knowing that his parents needed the money. The restaurant was sold. John went on to open his rst restaurant in June of 1960. He ran this restaurant, The Roma, until late 1982. In 1982 John began renovation on his home, which became his current restaurant The My Way Cafe in 1984. This has been his most rewarding restaurant. It is small enough to control but large enough to be ne dining with room for the gardens that he used to grow vegetables and herbs he used in his cooking during the summers at the restaurant. For the last twelve years John has worked in partnership with his wife Susan. For him these have been the most rewarding years of his career. John did not always intend to go into the restaurant business; he wanted to be an electrical engineer and began studying at Hudson Valley Community College. He also took some Business courses, which have helped him in running his restaurants. Until recently he never formally studied the culinary arts, but rather gained his knowledge through his family, books and personal experience. At the age of 69 though, John completed a Correspondence Course and earned a Masters Degree in the Culinary Arts. John has used all of these studies throughout his career. During his career John was active in the local chapter of the New York State Restaurant Association. He was on the Board of Directors and served one year as Vice President and two as President. During his tenure as President John ran the Capital Chef’s Charity Ball. Local Chef’s would cook at the event and they raised around $40,000 for local charities and scholarships to Schenectady Community College. Throughout his time of establishing and running these restaurants, John also raised three children, Michael, Brian and Jodi. All three graduated from college and have gone on to successful careers. John is very proud of his children and their accomplishments. Now at this stage of his life it is time to go shing, spend time with his kids and grandkids and do some traveling. He wants to thank his customers for 52 years of allowing him to be creative, the honor of cooking for them, and the times he joined them in this lifelong banquet. He would like them to know that June 26th will be the nale of his career. On July 10th, his 52nd Anniversary, there will be a Retirement Party from 4-8pm at the former My Way Cafe, which was also his home for 27 years. All family, friends and employees past and present are invited. CHEF BOVE THANKS YOU FOR 52 GREAT YEARS!CHEF BOVE THANKS YOU FOR 52 GREAT YEARS!
