2015 PROJECT EASTER BUNNYCAPITAL DISTRICT – Floyd-warriors.com “Helping Fami-lies Cope with Cancer, One Household at a Time” is very pleased to announce its 6th annual run of Project Easter Bunny. Floydwarriors.com founder Lisa Morahan began this eff ort after experiencing Easter Sunday in 2009 too ill to make one basket up for her son while in the middle of chemotherapy treatment. In 2010 enough toys and candy were collected to make up 100 baskets, 135 in 2011, 190 in 2012, 225 in 2013 and 290 in 2014. Our goal is to col-

lect enough new small toys and candy for 350 baskets this year and add yet another oncology center to our list of glad recipients. Several area cancer organizations and hospitals caring for cancer pa-tients will receive this year’s bounty so children of those in treatment will have a nice big basket to open on Easter morning. Locations to receive baskets hope to include The CR Wood Center at Glens Falls Hospital, Samaritan Hospital in Troy, The Mollie Wilmot Radiation Oncology Center at Saratoga Hospital, The Com-

CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stutter-ing is a frustrating and em-barrassing problem for mil-lions of people, but it can be especially tough on elemen-tary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-lan-guage pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from fi rst through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stut-tering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Ac-tion: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofi t Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. By examining the VIN, a driver can learn where his or her car was assembled, the model year of the vehicle, the manufacturer of the vehicle and even the model of the vehicle. How to read a VIN is not something drivers learn in educational courses, so those who want to learn how to decode their VIN can contact the manufacturer of their ve-hicles. Understanding how to read a VIN can help car buyers determine if the car they are buying is stolen or if the seller is attempting to mislead them in another way. In addition, when drivers have the correct VIN number for a vehicle, they can use that to gain access to a vehicle history report on the car or truck. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, in-door cats rarely need baths. That’s because indoor cats use their tongues and teeth to stay relatively clean. While cats can benefi t from routine brushing, which can reduce shedding and cut back on hairballs, the bath tub is a place cats need not visit regularly.

But sometimes cats fi nd themselves in sticky situa-tions that dirty their coats and give them a less than agreeable odor. In such in-stances, a bath may be the only way to clean up your cat. Cat owners concerned about bathing cats can consider the following tips, courtesy of the ASPCA.

• Trim the claws. Cats are unlikely to fi nd a bathtub comfortable, so cat own-ers should expect them to resist. Owners can protect themselves from such re-sistance by trimming their cat’s claws prior to bath time.

• Brush your cat’s hair. Mat-ted hair can be a nuisance come bath time, and that can translate into a length-ier bath that will try the patience of cat and owner alike. Just before bath time, brush your cat’s hair to loos-en any matted areas. Once hair has been brushed, gen-tly insert some cotton into your cat’s ears to prevent water from getting inside them.

• Choose the right time. Mellow or tired cats are less likely to resist a bath than well-rested cats with lots of energy, so choose a time of day when your cat is typically mellow to give the animal its bath. Allow the cat to play with some toys prior to bath time so he or she grows a little tired.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR CAT NEEDS A BATH• Use a bath mat. Cats likely won’t be comfortable in the tub or sink, and that comfort level is only further compro-mised if they are slipping around. Use a bath mat so your cat is not slipping and sliding.

• Use lukewarm water. When bathing your cat, use only lukewarm water. Get your frisky friend wet in three to four inches of water before gently massaging a solution that is one part cat sham-poo and fi ve parts water into his or her hair. Massage in the direction of the hair growth and do not use hu-man shampoo, which can dry out cats’ skin. When the time comes to rinse the

soap, once again gently use lukewarm water, taking cau-tion to avoid getting soap and water into your cat’s eyes, ears and nose. Make sure there is no remaining shampoo residue, which can irritate the skin and attract more dirt.

• Dry your cat off . Long-hair cats may need their fur to be untangled with wide-toothed combs. Short-hairs can be dried in a warm place with a large towel wrapped around their bodies. Some cats may be comfortable if you use a hair dryer set on the lowest heat setting to dry them off , but don’t push it if your cat is not respond-ing well to the hair dryer.
