Located in the main concourse of the Rensselaer Train Station, a seven foot tall, three sided kiosk contains information and visual images of people, places and events related to this signifi cant chapter in the history of Albany, the Capital Region, and New York State. Based upon the research conducted by Paul and Mary Liz Stewart, historians and co-founders of Underground Rail-road History Project of the Capital Region, Inc., Albany and the Capital Region were hotbeds of abolitionist activity prior to the Civil War. According to Paul Stewart, “Letters, narra-tives, newspaper articles, and broadsides tell us a much more complex and comprehensive story of Underground Railroad activity than we routinely hear about. They provide us with a new interpretation of a very old story.” The Rensselaer Amtrak Train Station will host the kiosk through February 2014.

India is a smart girl with a very faithful nature. Once she’s friends with you, she is yours entirely. This girl also has a beautiful grey coat and is just a

very attractive mutt. Watch India’s video.

Hi there, I’m Scarlet. I have a torbie coat - that means tiger with orange. My fur is medium length and real soft. My former family had young kids and a dog, and I got along fine with everybody. Then a new baby came along, and

became allergic to me. So here I am, and I’m a little confused by this big change in my life. That’s why I seem a little shy. But I like to be petted and after I get to know you I get over my shyness. You can brush me and that will help us bond, and keep my coat looking its best. I’m still young and

playful so we can have lots of fun together.

Hi, my name is Boots, and what a handsome black and white tuxedo cat I am. I have wonderful big eyes. I’m a lady of a certain age. I came to the shelter with my sister Tubby and my brother Sysco. After we spent our

whole lives with one family, they moved and had landlord issues and could not take us. We lived with dogs and kids there and got on fine with every-

body. My front feet are declawed so I must be an indoor cat. This move is a big change for cats of our age. But you know we are doing okay because we are all so nice and friendly. I am a very affectionate puss and I enjoy people

so much. Take me home and we can enjoy lots of cuddle time.

Silverbell -- a lovely name for a lovely mutt. This girl is affectionate and low-key. She also is very good-looking with absolutely beautiful markings

on her coat.

RECENTLY RETIRED AND LOOKING FOR MEANINGFUL

VOLUNTEER WORK?SARATOGA REGION - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. If you are a recently retired woman looking for some meaning-ful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the stu-dent to develop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empowering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email [email protected].

Aggressive driving and ex-cess weight in a vehicle can dramatically reduce fuel effi -ciency. According to U.S. De-partment of Energy, aggres-sive driving that includes rapid acceleration and brak-ing wastes gas, lowering gas mileage by 33 percent on highways and 5 percent when driving around town. Driving at higher speeds can also negatively aff ect gas mileage, which begins to decrease rapidly at speeds above 50 miles per hour, with each fi ve miles per hour more than 50 mph akin to paying an extra $0.25 per gallon for gas. Drivers who treat their vehicles as rolling storage closets also could be wasting fuel and money, as the DOE notes that an ex-tra 100 pounds in a vehicle could reduce its miles per gallon by 2 percent.
