The Extended Drain: How Far Can You Really Go Between Oil and Filter Changes?(MS) -- For years, the 3,000 mile mark has been touted as the optimum inter-val for changing your motor oil and fi lter. It’s also an oil change interval that continues to be encouraged by the automotive oil change industry. Automobile manufacturers, oil fi lter manufacturers and lubricant manufacturers are now saying that you can safely extend oil drain intervals, saving you time, money and reducing the impact on the environment.

Breakthroughs in lubrication and fi ltration are two reasons why oil change intervals can safely be extended. Numerous factors come in to play in deter-mining the oil change interval you should follow, including whether your car is under warranty, the car’s condition, the way you drive it, as well as oil and fi lter selection.

Every automobile manufacturer establishes a recommended oil change interval for each model they manufacture. Oil change intervals are now typically 5,000

to 7,500 miles for many new cars. You should follow your car manufacturer’s recommendations on oil and fi lter change intervals while the car is under warranty. If your car is no longer under warranty, you can extend your oil change and fi lter intervals by upgrading to a high quality synthetic motor oil and high performance oil fi lter. This will reduce the number of oil changes, saving you time and money while reducing the amount of oil purchased and disposed.

There are a number of quality synthetic motor oils avail-able from which to choose. High performance synthetic motor oils such as Royal Purple, Mobil1, etc., typically have much greater oxidation stability than conventional mineral-based motor oils. Most lubricant manufacturers will give a recommended number of miles you can drive between oil changes under normal conditions.

If you elect to upgrade your motor oil, you should also upgrade your oil fi lter. Inexpensive fi lters are typically made with the 3,000 mile interval in mind. These fi lters often use low-quality paper media for fi ltration and they deteriorate rapidly after 3,000 miles.

There are a number of new high performance premium oil fi lters on the market from manufacturers such as

Royal Purple, Wix and K&N. These fi lters are made for extended oil drain intervals. For example, Royal Purple uses a proprietary long-life, micro-glass media that provides protection for 12,000 miles. It also provides an increased level of protection due to the density of the fi ltration. You can fi nd out more at www.royalpurple.com

If your car is still under warranty, stick with the car manufacturer’s recom-mended oil change intervals. If your car is no longer under warranty, you can go beyond the typical 3,000 mile oil change or beyond the oil change moni-tor’s recommendations by upgrading to a high performance synthetic motor oil and high performance oil fi lter. Just be sure to check recommended change interval for both the oil and fi lter your purchase.

How Do You Know it’s Time to Replace Your Brakes?Brake pads will tell you when they need replacement, but rotors are a different story. (MS) -- Your car’s brakes are one of your most important safety features. So it makes sense to be sure that they are maintained properly. Since brakes wear out as part of normal operation, it’s obvious that the worn parts should be identifi ed and replaced as soon as possible. But how can you tell if the parts are worn enough to need replacing?

Your local service technician has the knowledge and the tools to tell you what’s needed, but only after the car has been in-spected. So how do you know when to bring your car in for service?

Some disc brake pads have wear sensors that trigger a “ser-vice” light on your dash, or shims that start to make noise when the pads are getting down to the minimum. If you know what you are looking for, you can also check for wear by looking at the outside brake pad on the front wheel, which is visible on most cars.

But rotors don’t have the benefi ts of a warning device, and in the past, they had to be physically examined and measured in order to determine the amount of wear. Fortunately, a new ad-vanced brake rotor from Continental Corporation has been de-veloped to solve this problem.

Built-in wear indicator signals rotor replacement

The ATE PremiumOne(R) Rotor features a patented RotorLife(R) wear indica-tor that provides a quick visual reference of rotor thickness and tells you if re-placement is needed. The wear indicator’s elliptical grooves are machined into both sides of the rotor face at the minimum discard thicknesses recommended by the original equipment vehicle manufacturer. When these grooves wear out, its time to bring the car in and have the rotor replaced. It’s that simple. You can easily see the rotor wear for yourself without having to lift the car or remove the wheels.

The wear indicators do not hurt the rotor’s performance in any way. In fact, they actually make it work better, which enhances the performance of your brake system. These wear grooves also serve to dissipate heat and gases, which helps to reduce brake fade and extends the life of your pads.

For more information on how to get ATE PremiumOne Rotors for your vehicle ask your service technician, or contact Continental Corporation at [email protected], or visit www.ate-na.com.
