Colonie EMS to Provide Free CPR TrainingCOLONIE – On February 19 and 26, the Town of Colonie EMS Department will conduct free “CPR Anytime” sessions to provide easy-to-learn instruc-tion on hands-only CPR and AED use in cardiac arrest. At the Sanford Town Library on February 19, ongoing Adult and Child CPR classes will be held from noon-6pm. At the Cicotti Center on February 26, Adult CPR classes will be held at 9am, 1pm and 7pm, and Child and Infant CPR classes at 10am, 2pm, and 8pm. No pre-registration required. Finding a job when the economy is struggling is not easy. An overcrowded pool of applicants coupled with fewer jobs can make a job seeker feel like a proverbial needle in a haystack.

When men and women apply for a position, the first person to see their resumes is typically a human resources employee, a company’s in-house recruiter or even a recruiting service hired by a company to help it fill the position. This person is respon-sible for sifting through the many applicants and narrowing those down to a manageable number of people whom the re-cruiter will then interview, or recommend for an interview. (Be it over the phone or in the company’s office.)

That said, grabbing the attention of a recruiter could make or break a person’s chance of landing a job. The following are a few ways individuals can help themselves gain the attention of a recruiter and increase their chances of being called for an interview.

* Recognize the importance of an effective C.V. A curriculum vitae, or C.V., is incredibly important. The C.V. is an overview of your experience and any additional qualifications. Longer and more extensive than a re-sume, the C.V. is the first thing many prospective employers will examine. It should in-clude a detailed summary of your background and experi-ence, including professional associations and licenses, awards and any other infor-mation relevant to the position to which you’re applying. In-clude your name and contact information as well as any specific skills you have that make you a strong candidate for the position. Organize the C.V. by dates and don’t be afraid to go into too much detail, especially if those de-tails are relevant to the job for which you’re applying.

* Tailor your C.V. to each spe-cific position. Avoid using a generic or non-specific C.V. This won’t make you stick out among the competition and the recruiter is likely to pass you over for consideration. Tailor the C.V. to each posi-tion for which you’re apply-ing, clearly illustrating how your past experience makes you a strong candidate for the

position.

* Always be prepared. If the recruiter deems you worthy of an interview, that interview could come at any time. A phone call from the recruiter could be a screening interview, so once you apply for a position, be prepared to interview at any time. Research the prospective employer and anticipate some of the questions he or she might ask you when responding to your ap-plication. Practice answering these questions so you can make a strong first impression.

* Recognize the other ways you can make an impression. A strong C.V. and an effective resume can make a great first im-pression, but today’s recruiters will also utilize social network-ing to determine your worthiness as a candidate. Applicants can help or hurt their chances with recruiters depending on how they approach social networking. Speaking ill of past employ-ers via social networking sites is a significant red flag, as is posting comments or photos pertaining to any questionable behavior. Avoid using expletives on social networking sites as well.

Did You Know?There are different times in a driver’s life when he or she may have to pull over on the side of the road. Whether a flat tire has derailed the trip, the driver or a passenger is experiencing mo-tion sickness or you find the car isn’t performing correctly and it warrants a look under the hood, pulling over on the shoulder may be necessary.

It can be difficult to pull over smoothly and safely on a busy highway, especially when you are in a stressful situation, such as a mechanical emergency. But it is in your best interest to remain calm and follow a few procedures. First, slow down and put on your right-turn signal to indicate you will need to move into the right lane. Some people prefer to put their four-way-flashers on after they have successfully cleared the lanes and are ready to navigate onto the shoulder. Try to select a spot where you are not on a bend or where there is poor visibility or your vehicle cannot be seen by other drivers on the highway. You do not want to be injured while exiting or attempting to work on the pulled-over vehicle. Drivers should keep an emergency roadside assistance preparedness kit containing flares, emergency triangles or cones, a flashlight, batteries, a poncho, booster cables, duct tape, a util-ity knife, cord, a blanket, and first aid supplies in the car as a precaution.Each item serves its own unique purpose.

The Canadian Automobile Association recommends staying in-side the vehicle, especially on a busy road. Tow trucks and police vehicles typically cruise busy stretches of road and help may arrive in a matter of minutes. Those who have a roadside assis-tance plan membership can use a cell phone to make a call for help. It is best to wait in the car until a tow truck or police arrive.
