LOW INCOME TAXPAYER

CLINIC CAPITAL DISTRICT - The LASNNY LITC offers FREE tax help to low income New York-ers who have a tax problem with the IRS. For example, if you got a letter or notice from the IRS that you don’t understand or a bill from the IRS that you don’t think you owe or that you can’t pay, or if you were denied an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) you thought you should have gotten, we may be able to help. The EITC could reduce your tax bill or even get you a refund if you qualify. You may be able to get the EITC if you have qualifying children and your earned income falls under a certain limit. This limit ranges from $37,870 up to $51,567 in 2013 depend-ing on your filing status and number of children. Workers without children who had 2013 incomes below $14,340 ($19,680 for a married couple filing jointly) may also receive a very small EITC benefit. To qualify, a child must live with you for more than half the year. A son or daughter, grandchild, younger brother or sister, or niece or nephew, may be a qualifying child. The child must be younger than 19 (or 24 if they are a full time student) or perma-nently and totally disabled. Only one person can claim a child for EITC each year. Oth-er age, residence, and filing requirements must be met. You must file a tax return and claim the credit to get the EITC, even if you don’t oth-erwise have to file. If the IRS denies your claim for the EITC and you don’t understand why, you may want to talk to an accountant or an at-torney. The LASNNY LITC can be reached at (518) 462-6765 or (800) 462-2922, Monday through Friday, 9am – 5pm.

CDTA TEAMS UP WITH

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD HISTORY PROJECT

RENSSELAER - CDTA, manag-er of the Rensselaer Amtrak Train Station, has teamed up with Underground Railroad History Project of the Capi-tal Region in order to bring local Underground Railroad history to the public. Locat-ed in the main concourse of the Rensselaer Train Station, a seven foot tall, three sided kiosk contains information and visual images of people, places and events related to this signifi cant chapter in the history of Albany, the Capital Region, and New York State. Based upon the research conducted by Paul and Mary Liz Stewart, historians and co-founders of Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region, Inc., Al-bany and the Capital Region were hotbeds of abolitionist activity prior to the Civil War. According to Paul Stewart, “Letters, narratives, newspa-per articles, and broadsides tell us a much more complex and comprehensive story of Underground Railroad activity than we routinely hear about. They provide us with a new interpretation of a very old story.” The Rens-selaer Amtrak Train Station will host the kiosk through February 2014.

CALLING ALL MENTORS!CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to stu-dents as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on provid-ing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to develop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empowering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email Avon@scherffi nsurance.com.

HELP KEEP A VOLUNTEER WARM THIS WINTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - The USS SLATER has launched their 15th Annual Winter Fund Drive. It’s time to “help keep a volunteer warm this winter.” According to Chairman Bartley “BJ” Costel-lo, “The Winter Fund Drive was conceived back in 1998. After the first season of public visitation, we realized that we did not have enough cash to get us through the winter. When we closed for the season, our income stream ceased, but our expenses continued. It was a case of making lemonade out of lemons. We reached out to our members and asked them each to donate $100 to help get us through the winter. The response was overwhelming. Their donations got us through that first winter and then some. We’ve continued the drive every year since.” The appeal enables the volunteers to keep working on USS SLATER’s restoration throughout the winter months. It has become an important part of the Museum’s operating fund. USS SLATER is supported by a network of 3,000 members in all 50 states, including Navy veterans, their families, and history-minded friends. In 2013 the only pub-lic funding the Museum received was a $1000 City of Albany Arts Grant to support public programming. Private donations provide half of the Museum’s operating budget. The efforts of the SLATER’s volunteers were rewarded in 2012 when the ship was designated a National Historic Landmark and in 2013 the Museum received a New York State preservation award. Volunteers donate an average of 16,000 hours a year to the project. Winter Fund donors are welcome at any level. Visit the website at www.ussslater.org for more information. Museum memberships begin at $25. Members receive the Museum’s quarterly newsletter “Trim But Deadly,” which fea-tures historic articles, photos and updates on the volunteer’s progress, as well as free admission to the ship. Donations may be mailed to USS SLATER, P.O. Box 1926, Albany, NY 12201.

Very often drivers fi nd that the seats or the mats below their feet are damp or downright sopping wet. But unless a window or sunroof was left open during a rainstorm, drivers may fi nd it diffi cult to deci-pher why their vehicles are suddenly soaked.

Unfortunately, when a vehicle’s interior is wet, that could be a sign of a signifi cant problem, one that can gradually worsen over time. Wetness can cause electrical components or metal structures in the car to rot, and a soggy interior may eventually be overcome by mold. It is best to fi nd out what is causing the leak as soon as pos-sible and have the problem fi xed just as quickly.

Finding the source of a leak is not always easy. Sometimes drivers can locate it themselves and then fi x the problem on their own, while more serious problems might need to be handled by a profes-sional. But it is best to assess the situation before booking an ap-pointment with your mechanic.

Cars can spring a leak for a variety of reasons. Leaks from systems under the hood, as well as rainwater or water from washing the car, can infi ltrate the interior if seals around doors and/or windows are broken or gaskets are worn out. Figuring out which type of liquid is entering your vehicle can help you determine what’s behind the leak.

A clear, slippery liquid under the seats may be indicative of a leak in the brake fl uid reservoir. Brake fl uid is a liquid used in the braking system to apply hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder to the calipers to the pads against the wheel drums. If you discover brake fl uid, check the master cylinder or the clutch master cylinder to see if there is a leak or spillover of the fl uid.

Coolant also can leak under the dashboard and into the foot wells of a car. Coolant is a sticky, green and sweet-smelling fl uid, and a coolant leak could mean that a heater core or hose in the cooling system is leaking. In such instances, hoses may need to be replaced.

Some vehicles have water diverters on the sides of their windshields to make sure water fl ows off of the windshield when the wipers are in use. Also, the trough where the wipers rest should have a seal-ant that prevents water from entering at the base of the windshield. Over time, both can wear out and may need to be replaced and re-sealed. Try sitting in the car on a dry day and spraying a hose on the windshield. See if any water eventually makes it inside of the car. If it does, the windshield is likely the reason your vehicle’s interior is getting wet.

A clogged drain in a vehicle’s heating, ventilation and air condi-tioning system is one of the more common causes of interior wa-ter damage. If the drain is clogged, condensation from the system cannot drain from the tube. In such instances, water backs up into the system and can actually blow out of the car vents or elsewhere in the vehicle, forming a pool on the fl oor of the car. Leaves or de-bris can cause a blockage. If excess water is left in the HVAC system, it can damage the blower motor. Also, a faulty seal that is located between the HVAC case and the fi rewall of the vehicle may cause water to leak into the passenger compartment under the carpet.

In some cases, cleaning blocked drains in a vehicle’s HVAC system may be as simple as blowing compressed air through the vents or using a wire to clear out leaves or dirt. Other times it may be hard to access the leaks, and such instances are often best left to a me-chanic.

The causes of leaks in a car are not always so easy to diagnose. But it is important to fi gure out where the water is coming from early on to minimize the damage water can do to your vehicle.

Balancing work and fam-ily life is a major challenge for many professionals. Many established professionals fi nd it stressful to juggle the de-mands of successful careers with the obligations they have to their families, and regaining that balance once it has been lost only adds to that stress.

Part of the diffi culty of balanc-ing work and family life is that the challenge is ongoing. The threat of losing your work-life balance is never too far away, but there are steps men and women can take to regain that balance once it’s been lost.

* Start documenting your ac-tivities. No one operates at 100 percent effi ciency all the time, but balancing obligations at work with those at home is especially diffi cult when time is routinely lost to trivial mat-ters or tasks at work that can be delegated to others. These time-consuming tasks have a tendency to add up, but pro-fessionals rarely take note of the smaller tasks or distrac-tions that cost them time. Start documenting your activities on a daily basis, jotting down how each hour of your day is spent, both at home and at work. Do this for several weeks, after which time a pattern will likely develop, and you can see where you are wasting time and where you are being most effi cient with your time. When you sit down to examine your notes, look for ways to free up time without sacrifi cing the quality of your work or the quality of time you spend with

REGAINING YOUR WORK-LIFE BALANCEyour family. Don’t be afraid to make changes.

* Don’t go it alone. Teamwork is important at home and around the offi ce and can help over-burdened professionals regain their work-life balance. If you tend to go it alone in the offi ce, reach out to your colleagues more often, seeking their help on projects and off ering your help in return. This can drasti-cally cut back on the hours you spend in the offi ce, giving you more quality time at home. But you also can work with your family to free up more time. Assign tasks around the house so you aren’t doing chores during the time you do have at home. Split cooking duties with your spouse or even the kids if they’re old enough and delegate other household tasks as well. Such tasks can be tackled while you’re at work so the family can spend more

time together each night and on weekends.

* Stop emulating Atlas. In Greek mythology, Atlas was condemned to standing at the edge of the Earth and holding the weight of Uranus on his shoulders. Many profession-als can no doubt empathize with Atlas, even if taking such weight on their shoulders was self-infl icted. Regaining work-life balance may require tak-ing some of that weight off of your shoulders by learning to respectfully decline extra projects around the offi ce or in your personal life. You can still pitch in on special projects at work without spearheading them, much like you can still spend time with your kids at the ballpark even if you aren’t their coach. Cutting back on your obligations is a great way to reduce stress and free up time to focus on the things

that mean the most to you.

* Think outside the box. If you have examined your daily ac-tivities and commitments but can’t seem to fi nd any ways to regain your work-life balance, start looking for unique ways to make the time you spend at work and the time you spend at home more proportionate. Consider telecommuting one or two days per week to free up time to spend with your family. If moving is an option, con-sider moving closer to your of-fi ce so you aren’t spending so much time commuting to and from work each day. Even if you have seemingly exhausted all options, chances are strong there is a solution to help you regain your work-life balance. But sometimes that balance requires a little creativity and some give-and-take with both your employer and your family.

There’s more to towing than hitching a trailer and hitting the open road. A number of factors come into play when towing cargo or another ve-hicle, including the towing capacity of the vehicle doing the hauling. The following are some safety tips for road trippers hitting the road with trailer in tow.

Tow vehicles

While many vehicles have towing capabilities, not all of those vehicles are necessar-ily right for the job. Review the towing capacities of vari-ous vehicles depending on the type of trailer that will be towed. A larger, more power-ful vehicle may be necessary if you will be towing some-thing large and heavy, such as a boat or a recreational vehicle. You may need more horsepower to maintain a safe driving speed when towing especially heavy cargo.

Equipment

Diff erent manufacturers off er towing packages equipped to work in concert with your vehicle. Towing packages may include certain types of hitch-es, batteries, fl asher systems, extended-view side mirrors, and even special axles and tires. In many areas, a trailer with a loaded weight of more than 1,500 pounds requires a separate braking system and a breakaway switch located on the tongue of the trailer that activates the trailer brakes in the event it separates from the tow vehicle. Having the right equipment can mean the diff erence between safely towing cargo and getting in an accident.

Ability

Having a lot of power and the right equipment is not enough to safely tow cargo. Recklessness on the road, which includes driving over the speed limit, is a recipe for an accident. It typically takes time and some practice for drivers to grow accustomed to driving while towing cargo. Driving while towing cargo requires that drivers maneu-

Vehicle check

Verifying that the trailer hitch is secure is not the only in-spection drivers must conduct before hitting the open road. The vehicle doing the towing should be serviced, and any repairs should be made. Check fl uid levels, particularly the transmission fl uid. In addition, make sure the water level in

the battery is acceptable and have the motor oil changed if it is nearing its mileage limit. It’s also a good idea to replace the air fi lter, examine the tires for adequate tread and test the brakes.
