A roaring fi replace on a chilly day provides a welcome, aesthetically appealing re-spite from the cold.

Fireplaces are typically used throughout winter, but when spring rolls around, many homeowners no lon-ger feel the need to light a fi re. As fi replace season winds down, homeowners can take the following steps to close their fi replaces for the warm weather seasons ahead.

Begin the cleanup

Repeatedly lighting fi res results in an accumulation of ash and residual wood debris. Clean out what you can by hand and discard the soot. To conduct a more thorough cleaning, use a high-powered garage vacu-um to clear out any remain-ing ashes from crevices and other parts of the fi rebox.

Hire a chimney sweep

A fully functioning fi replace chimney should be swept annually by a certifi ed chim-ney sweep. He or she will remove soot and any creo-sote from the inside of the chimney. Creosote is highly fl ammable and can cause considerable damage if it catches fi re.

A professional chimney sweeping also reduces the amount of dirt and odor that will continue to enter a home after the fi replace has been retired for the season. Damp spring weather can moisten soot trapped in a chimney, causing it to smell. Cleaning and deodorizing can help keep rooms fresh.

Ask for an inspection

Ask a chimney sweep to in-spect your chimney in addi-tion to cleaning it. A sweep can look for leaks and cracks, and he or she should also

HOW TO CLOSE UP A FIREPLACE FOR THE

SEASON

look at the fl ashing system and rain cap, which can pre-vent water infi ltration. You don’t want to learn your chimney is in poor shape during a heavy spring rain-fall. Ask that the pipes, brick-work and damper also be checked for functionality and good repair.

Close the damper

Homeowners should close the dampers on wood-burn-ing fi replaces when clos-ing their fi replaces for the season. Doing so prevents animals from making nests inside the chimney and pos-sibly gaining entry into your home. Closing the damper also makes the home more effi cient by not letting air es-

cape through the chimney.

Those with gas fi replaces should leave the damper open at all times to prevent a gas buildup in the home in the case of a gas leak. However, homeowners may want to extinguish the pilot light for a gas fi replace in the spring to reduce energy us-age.

Make it attractive

Some homeowners choose to dress up a fi replace to make it look more appealing in the off season. Flowers, plants, candles, or decora-tive accents can be placed in the fi rebox to add style to a home.

When closing a fi replace for the season, homeown-ers can benefi t from hiring a professional to ensure everything is done cor-rectly and the fi replace will be in top shape and ready to warm everyone up next winter.

Granite has long been a popular countertop mate-rial for homeowners look-ing to combine functional-ity with aesthetic appeal in their kitchens. But granite is no small investment, and homeowners looking to re-furbish their kitchens should know there are a multitude of countertop materials available to those working on a budget or those who simply want to give their kitchens a different look.

• Solid wood: Wood counter-tops create a warm, homey interior. Butcher block coun-ters are less expensive than granite and do not neces-sarily need to be ordered from a speciality retailer. But wood can stain and dent and can even burn when hot kitchenware is placed atop it. Regular application of oil can help homeowners main-tain the appearance of their wood counters for years to come.

• Marble: Marble tends to be less expensive than granite without sacrificing aesthetic appeal. However, marble is softer and more porous than granite, so it can stain and be etched. Diligence in wiping away spills, routine sealing and a gentle touch is neces-sary for those who choose marble countertops.

• Soapstone: This is a natural stone composed mainly of mineral talc that gives the stone its smooth feel. Soap-stone ranges from black to gray but can sometimes have a green shade to it. Other materials in the stone can produce veining. Al-though softer than granite, soapstone is still high-den-sity and will hold up well. It’s impervious to stains and bacteria, and exposure to chemicals will not damage it.

EXPLORE THE ALTERNATIVES TO

GRANITE COUNTERTOPS

• Quartz: Quartz is a manu-factured product made of stone aggregate and poly-mers compressed under high pressure. It has the look of natural stone but requires less work to main-tain. Quartz has consistent colors and patterns and is a nonporous material, so it will not need routine sealing and resealing.

• Glass: Glass countertops are back-painted, so homeown-ers can order just about any color they want. Glass will be tempered, so it is safe and heat-resistant. Glass can scratch, though, so it is not as impervious as other ma-terials.

• Concrete: Concrete is an-other material that can be colored to match homeown-

ers’ whims. Concrete is rela-

tively inexpensive compared

to other countertop materi-

als, but it can crack or chip.

While granite is a popu-

lar countertop material,

homeowners who want

something new have many

additional options at their

disposal.

(MS) — Enjoy a jam session or watch an intense sports game with the boys without disturbing the rest of your house. Soundproofing your man cave will ensure that the noise of male bonding, deep voices, loud music and cheering doesn’t disturb the entire household.

A simple solution to controlling noise is acoustic insulation. A mineral wool product, such as ROXUL Safe ‘n’ Sound, offers sound absorbing qualities that will let you crank up your sub-woofer and cheer and jump around when your favorite team scores.

Installing mineral wool insulation on the interior walls of your man cave or media room will control sound, delivering a place you can call your own sanctuary to hang out with the boys.

(MS) — After a winter of hibernation, spring is the perfect time to consider re-modeling projects that will help keep your house cool in the coming summer months

KICK START SPRING WITH A FINISHED BASEMENTand reduce energy con-sumption.

An unfi nished basement is a source of energy loss in many homes. By simply fi n-

ishing the space with wall and fl oor coverings, you will notice a diff erence on your energy bills. A remodeled basement off ers more than

additional storage and living space. It can provide room for a growing family or a space where you can retreat for some privacy.

Insulation is a key compo-nent in making your base-ment look and feel comfort-able, inviting and dry. For the best results, install a rigid board insulation like ROXUL ComfortBoard IS against the concrete foundation before you stud the wall. The board is mechanically fastened or adhered to the concrete foundation wall, preventing thermal bridging through the studs, off ering a higher R-value and better thermal performance. It will

ensure your basement is not a source of energy loss, but rather an inviting retreat all year round.

Installation tips are available online at www.diywithroxul.com.

Though it may seem like interior decorators are a luxury re-served exclusively for the rich and famous, interior decora-tors work with people of all budgets. Homeowners some-times wrestle with the practicality of hiring a decorator, wondering why they should spend the money when they can do the work themselves. But just like homeowners may hire professional electricians or landscapers, hiring a profes-sional interior decorator can ensure the job is done right, within budget and completed within a reasonable amount of time.

Those who have already invested quite a bit of money into their homes but want to add some fi nishing touches would be wise to hire interior decorators or designers. Homeown-ers often have no idea where to begin when attempting to establish fl ow from room to room in their homes. Decorators can help homeowners tailor the interiors of their homes to the homes produce the desired vibe.

Hiring a designer can help a person avoid making potentially costly design errors. An aesthetically appealing house also can increase the home’s value, setting a property above oth-ers in terms of appeal. Even though the designer will charge a fee, the investment may be well worth the expense when the room is done right the fi rst time.

Interior decorators have numerous resources at their dispos-al. Fine tuned to the world of design, they understand which trends will come and go and also which design ideas have staying power. In addition, decorators will be in touch with vendors in the industry, connecting homeowners with the best of the best in terms of providing furniture, housewares, photography, and additional special touches that help make a house a home.

REDEFINE A SPACE WITH AN INTERIOR DECORATOR’S HELP

In addition to expertise and resources, interior decorators have eyes that will be trained on things homeowners may not have noticed or even realized can be done. A designer may envision removing a room to create more space or

knocking a wall down to let more natural light into a room.

Designers and decorators are trained to think diff erently and

spatially to achieve concepts homeowners may never have

Warmer temperatures and longer hours of sunlight can recharge energy levels. Upon the arrival of spring, home-owners dust off their to-do lists and charge ahead with renewed vigor.

But before homeowners can get started on renovation projects, many must tame the existing mess that may have built up over the winter. Spring is a great time to dive into spring cleaning projects and ready a home for a season of renovation and remodeling.

Getting started on spring cleaning can be a tad over-whelming. In 2012, One-Poll asked 1,000 adults liv-

GET STARTED NOW ON SPRING CLEANINGing in the United Kingdom how they felt about spring cleaning, and 41 percent of those surveyed found spring cleaning a daunting process while 68 percent had negative feelings about spring cleaning. But in spite of that initial lack of enthusiasm, respondents said they felt happy and more orga-nized once they fi nished their spring cleaning. Establishing a plan and setting reachable goals can make spring clean-

ing a lot less daunting.

• Set aside several days for spring cleaning. A long weekend is a great time to

do some spring cleaning, as having consecutive days to

clean will reduce the chances you grow distracted.

• Make a list and pur-chase all of the sup-plies you will need. Again, this will help you stay on course, rather than going out to the store to pick up cleaners or organiza-tional systems.

• Try to set reason-able goals. Even if

you hope to clean the en-tire house, stick to the one or two rooms that are most desperate for your attention. Divide each task into a series of steps so when you com-plete each step you will feel

proud that you’re making progress.

• Create your musical playlist. A playlist full of your favorite songs can provide some inspi-ration and energy to push you through the spring cleaning when your enthusiasm starts to wane. The music also may take your mind off of the work ahead and help to pass the time.

• Start from the top and work downward. Follow a logi-cal cleaning order. Begin by dusting away cobwebs and lighting fi xtures. Clean light switches and walls. Empty closets and then restock them in a more organized fashion. Leave the furniture and fl oor-ing for last, as dirt and dust

may accumulate on furniture and fl ooring as you clean oth-er areas of the home.

• Be prepared to bid adieu to some of your stuff . Have a few trash bags at the ready. Re-organize items you won’t be keeping into separate piles, with one pile for items you plan to donate and another for those items you will dis-card. Donate what you can and promptly put the remain-der of the items at the curb for pickup.

• Stay fed and hydrated. Cleaning can be physically and emotionally exhaust-ing. Take breaks to fuel up on food and always have a re-freshing beverage close by.

Perhaps because they can live for so many years, trees have a way of falling down homeowners’ landscaping priority lists. Trees also tend to be big and strong, so it’s no surprise that they often are overlooked in favor or other areas of a lawn and garden that don’t seem so strong in the face of Mother Nature.

But trees are susceptible to damage and disease, and homeowners who learn to recognize symptoms of such problems can prevent them from escalating and reduce the risk that the trees will cause damage to their properties. The following are just some of the ways homeowners can determine if their trees are unhealthy. Homeowners who suspect they have a tree that poses a safety risk should contact a professional tree service for an immediate inspection and steer clear of the tree until an inspection has been performed.

• Check around the base of the tree. The base of a tree may off er some telltale signs that the tree is unhealthy. Soil that is cracked or raised at the base of the tree may be indicative of a tree that has started to uproot. If you

recognize any cracking or if the soil is raised, look at the tree to see if it is leaning. If the soil is cracked or raised because it is uprooting, then the tree might have already started to lean in the oppo-site direction of the cracking or raised soil.

• Examine for fungus. The growth of fungus on the tree trunk or close to it may be a sign that the tree is rotting or decaying. Fungal growth, such as a sudden population of mushrooms, around the base of the tree is another sign of decay. If the wood behind fungal growth crum-bles easily, then homeown-ers should call a professional tree service, as the fungal problem on the tree has like-ly already been festering for quite some time.

• Look for cavities on the trunk. Cracks and cavities on a tree may not be an emer-gency, but especially deep cracks and cavities may be indicative of a structural problem. Multiple cracks and cavities also serve as red fl ags.

• Look for dead wood. It may sound simple, but dead wood poses a threat to the tree and anyone who hap-pens to spend time in its vicinity. Dead wood snaps

easily, and falling dead wood can harm anyone unlucky enough to be beneath the tree when the dead wood snaps. Dead wood branches won’t bend in the wind, and such branches frequently fall off of trees when strong gusts of wind come along. Dead branches either won’t have leaves or the leaves will be brown (dead pine branches will have brown needles).

• Weak connections. Un-healthy trees often have weak connections between their branches and their trunks. If branches don’t appear to be strongly con-nected to the tree bark, call a tree service to determine a solution. The tree might not be on its way out, but you may have to take steps to strengthen the connections so branches are not at risk of falling.

Unhealthy trees can pose a signifi cant safety hazard on a property. Homeowners who learn to recognize the signs of unhealthy trees can do something to prevent dying trees from damaging their homes.
