New Teacher

Newsletter No.25 Friday 24th August 2012 Dear Parents

Eight people applied for the part-time art position and the appointment committee chose Miss Shinae Suh, the current artroom reliever, as the successful applicant. Shinae was born in South Korea and came to New Zealand at the age of 15 years. After completing her high schooling, she attended Auckland University completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Elam degree. Shinae attends Onnuri (Korean) Community Church and teaches Sunday school to year7-13 students. She also enjoys reading, writing, painting, photography, flute playing, swimming, running, and trekking. She is a volunteer at community health clinics. We welcome Shinae to our school.

Primary Speech Finals Our annual Primary Speech Finals took place on Wednesday morning and we all heard some very impressive speeches. They were so good I plan to video some of them and place them on our website for all our community to enjoy. Preparing and giving good speeches is a skill that can be learned and these children have certainly done that. They now have a skill that will be very useful during their lifetime when messages and ideas need to be conveyed to a large group of people in an interesting and persuasive manner. Intermediate Science Projects Room 11 and 12 Year 7 and 8 students have been creating science exhibitions for the upcoming NIWA Auckland City Science and Technology Fair. Their “creations” were judged by our secondary science teacher, Mr Darrell Crisp, and a retired science teacher, Mr Ian Milne.

Results were: 1st= Oliver Butler and Brendon Matthews 2nd Sophia Nobbs 3rd Luda Lin Outstanding: Kristiaan Welch, Lauren Nobbs, Peter Biondic, Thomas Garner, Jamie Ngo, Sarah Scott, Jayna Bennett & Madeline Schnell. Qualifying exhibits will be displayed at the Fickling Centre, Mt Roskill, 546 Mt Albert Rd, Three Kings on Thursday next week and judging will take place on Friday. Public viewing occurs on Friday 31st August 5pm-8pm and Saturday 1st September 10am- 5pm. We encourage you to pop along with the family to look at these outstanding exhibits and maybe spot some prized Hebron exhibits. Casio Mathex Competition. Last Friday, I told you about our involvement in the Casio Mathex Competition. Later in the evening I received the following email which “warmed the cockles of my heart” as the saying goes… Last night I attended the Mathex competition where we had a few teams competing and a couple of our teachers marking. When we all got back to the car to journey home together my teachers were singing the praises of the 'runner' one of your teams had. They were hoping that the runners we had showed a fraction of the grace, humility and patience the runner from Hebron had. Well done for the work you are doing with your students, they are truly shining the light! Blessings, Shaun Brooker Head of Junior Campus Elim Christian College Rock Climbing Our Year 13 students spent Friday afternoon at Extreme Edge Rock Climbing, Glen Eden as part of their school programme. There were many challenging rock walls, some easy, some very difficult. All the students had to muster all their reserves to be successful and reach the top. They learnt valuable life lessons…try your hardest to achieve success…don’t give up…etc.

Careers Advice

Transport You will see from the above table that we can save a lot of money having parents drop off and/or pick up their children from Liberty Christian Church in Avondale instead of hiring buses. If this arrangement is impossible (or extremely difficult) for you, please let the school office know and we will endeavour to have a teacher or parent transport your children from the school to the venue and bring them back to school after the practice and/or matinee. We need to know this information on Monday.

Ticket sales Please do your very best to not only attend the show with your family but invite relatives and friends to join us on the Friday or Saturday night. It would be really great if we could fill up the auditorium on both nights. Ticket money can be handed into the office or a note/email can be sent advising the ticket costs be added to your family account. Email: admin@hebron.ac.nz Visit by Bishop Glorious Shoo Bishop Glorious Shoo, founder and director of the New Life Foundation Orphanage and School where our secondary school mission teams visit every two years, will be visiting New Zealand from this Saturday 25th August to Sunday 2nd September. The purpose of his visit is to meet with Hebron mother Monique Douglas to finalise the development of a new website for the New life Foundation, meet the lady from the South Island who donated $100k to NLF, meet with the NLF(NZ) Trust Board and preach at the Newton Pacific Island Presbyterian Church from which a group will be visiting the orphanage in late September. Bishop Shoo will be formally welcomed at primary and secondary assemblies on Monday morning after which I will take him on a tour of the school. He will also be welcomed with a powhiri at Nga Kakano Maori Christian School in West Auckland on Wednesday morning and will be visiting NLF(NZ) trustees in Wellington on Friday and Saturday, returning late Saturday afternoon and attending our evening musical. Please introduce yourself to Glorious if you see him around the school. He is a very personable man! Daffodil Day next Friday Hebron Christian College has always supported the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day collection and will, this coming Friday, have secondary students collect donations from the Stoddard Rd industrial area, the Stoddard Rd shops and the New World Supermaket. We invite Hebron students to bring a gold coin donation on Friday to be placed on their classroom “Turn White to Gold” chart and receive a lapel daffodil. Open Morning We plan to hold an Open Morning on Wednesday 19th September, 9am – noon. Can you tell your friends and relatives about this event and encourage them to come along and seen a Christian school in action? We also have posters which can be put up on church noticeboards. Please request one for your church and I will be happy to pass this onto you.
