Welcome Hebron Happenings Newsletter No.12 Friday 11 th May 2012 Dear Parents We welcome a young trainee teacher to our school &all the way from Germany. She writes: My name is Marina Mueller and I am from Germany. I am studying English and Theology to become a teacher in Germany. During the last 5 weeks I had the chance to take some time off from Uni and to travel in this beautiful country of New Zealand. I really enjoyed the awesome landscape, the nice people and the sunny weather J Before I came to New Zealand I contacted Hebron Christian College as I heard about it from a friend who has been living in the Hebron House for a few months. It was a real pleasure to receive an invitation from Geoff Matthews and Lovell Greybe to join the school and be part of the German lessons. So I am very happy to spend my last week in New Zealand at Hebron. As I am becoming an English teacher for German students it is very interesting for me to see lessons the other way around: German lessons for English students. Another aspect I enjoy about Hebron College is to experience how the teachers include their Christian faith into their teaching. It is such a good opportunity to have a positive influence on young people’s lives and share Jesus’ love with them. I like the kind and positive atmosphere at Hebron, the rather small learning groups and the friendly studentsJ. The time in New Zealand has encouraged me to think about studying German as a foreign language and to maybe come back to New Zealand one day! I pray that God blesses the teachers as well as the students at Hebron and I say “Thank You” for your hospitality!! Soccer & Netball Field Day The Auckland Christian Schools Soccer & Netball Field Day took place on Tuesday and thankfully, the wet weather held off until the games were all played. Field Day Netball 45 Year 5-13 students played in the netball competition held at Lloyd Elsmore Park. It was a riveting time and all the girls put in their best effort. The year 5-6 team- coached by Year 12 student, Cathy Marshall (right), was 2nd overall and the year 11-13 team was undefeated. Wow! The rain held off which was unexpected and a huge blessing as it made the sunny day more enjoyable. Special thanks to all the parents who offered their support for the day with supervision and refereeing. Your help was much appreciated.

Writers’ and Readers’ Festival On Wednesday, the Year 7 & 8 classes took a trip to the Aotea Centre, where they took part in the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival. Eoin Colfer, the first author who spoke, was so funny that the whole auditorium was in laughter. The second speaker was Oliver Jeffers, an artist. He held everyone’s attention effortlessly as he demonstrated drawing techniques, and showed us part of his new movie. After lunch, the first speaker was David Veart, a New Zealand archaeologist, who spoke of how history can be found in your own back garden. Finally, Emily Rodda, an Australian fantasy writer, had everyone enthralled. In the morning, the children on the bus were excited. In the afternoon, they were quiet. Most of them were reading.

Sarah Scott meets author Eoin Colfer Twins Lauren & Sophie Nobbs Kwaharini We say “Kwaharini” (Swahili = “Good-bye”) to Hebron Mums, Monique Douglas and Cathy Gillies who flew out of Auckland last night at about 6pm to travel to the New Life Foundation orphanage and school in Tanzania, Africa for 3 weeks. They promised to send updates and photos so look out for these in upcoming newsletters.

Eden-Albert Primary Cross Country Championships Day Yesterday, four Year 6 students, (L to R) Giles Paton-Simpson, Samuel Murphy, Alexandria Meyer and Peter Luo, participated in the Eden-Albert Primary Schools Cross Country Championship at Fowlds Park. All the Hebron students achieved well

with each runner coming in the first 25 places out of 40. We even had a first place…Samuel Murphy gained top place in the 11 year old mixed race. Special thanks and commendation goes to the team coach, Ben Taylor (left), who spent many weeks and lunchtimes coaching the team

Sports Results The winter inter-school sports are now underway. The Year 3 & 4 and Year 7 & 8 netball teams had byes last Saturday but the Secondary netball team played Baradene College and won their game 19-6. Well done girls and coaches, Mrs Finn & Miss Harris. The year 7 & 8 Miniball Team played on Wednesday afternoon at UNITEC stadium against Parnell ACG team. The Hebron boys were dwarfed by the exceptionally large Parnell boys but what they lacked in height and muscle, they definitely made up in agility, speed and skill winning their game 39-25.

Futsal (like indoor soccer) has started this term. Hebron has entered two teams (one primary and one intermediate) and they play at UNITEC against other schools and football clubs. Pictured is our intermediate team, who battled it out on Monday to beat Ponsonby Intermediate Rangers 5-4. The primary team played Pt.Chevalier Lightning but were beaten 6-2. Well done boys!

Jury Service Mrs Sellar, teacher of our Y1 & 2 junior class, has been called up for jury service in the high court starting next Monday and could be involved in a case lasting up to 4 weeks. We appreciate the concern parents of her students may have with this (possible) long absence but we did everything possible to have her exempted but without avail (the Justice Department is becoming more strict regarding exemptions from jury service). We are, however, thankful that Hebron Mum and trained teacher, Mrs Maree Van Alstine , is able to step in and teach the class until Mrs Sellar returns. Football NZ Soccer Skills Clinic Hebron children in Years 1-8 wanting to continue to improve their soccer skills can enroll in a 5-week Skills Clinic starting at our school next Tuesday, 15th May during lunchtimes. The cost is $40 per child with siblings paying $20. Registration forms are available at the office. Contact organiser Matthew Upton for more info at [email protected] or phone 021 213 0418.

Homestays needed for Japanese students

Missing

Camp Fees Now Due

We now have two thirds of our 20 Japanese high school students visiting us for 9 days in Term 3, 2nd-10th August billeted in Hebron homes but need some more families to volunteer. Would you offer to have one of these students? Males can share bedrooms and females can share bedrooms if need be. You will be paid $360 and will need to supply all meals (including a lunch for schooldays), wash clothes where needed and assist with transport to/from school. Please let me know of your availability and whether you prefer a male or female or either-or.

Cameron Goetz-Wylie’s school jersey has gone astray. Parents…please check the name tag on your son’s jersey…it may be Cameron’s. His jersey has his initials “CGW” embroidered in gold at the back of the neck.

A reminder to those families who are not on direct debit….your son/daughter’s camp fees are now due. Can you please pay these promptly. Thank you. Have an enjoyable weekend.
