June: Ascension, Pentecost, Trinity (Continued From Back Page)

The liturgical color for Ordinary Time is green. (The other seasonal colors are purple for Advent and Lent, white for Christmas and Easter, and red for the Day of Pentecost.) Green is used to represent growth in the manner of an evergreen tree, because Christians are called to grow in faith and Christian maturity in all times and seasons, and not just during the special sea-sons or on special days of the year.

In following the Christian Calendar, Hebron joins other Christians and other churches throughout the na-tion and world in worshiping and praising God with an intentional focus on the great gifts God has given us in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. By following the major events of his life and ministry throughout the year, we are regularly reminded of God’s great love.

Minutes For Regular Session Meeting Held April 25 2

The Hebron Presbyterian Women’s Spring Circle meeting was held April 9, 2019. The highlights of the meeting follow.

The Financial Report shows a balance of $5,412 in the Women’s budget.

Thanks were given to all those who provided “goodies” and helped pack the college students goodie boxes in February.

Under new business: 1. Shiflet Reunion: The women voted and are eager

to help with the Clarence Shiflet Family Reunion on August 1, 2019, in the Fellowship Hall. Joan Wright will provide leadership for this event and will call upon the women as needed. Proceeds from the reunion will go to the Compassion Committee.

2. Percentage of proceeds from Yard Sale and Even-ing of Comfort and Joy for General Fund: A proposal was made that a specified percentage of proceeds from the Evening of Comfort and Joy and the annual Yard Sale be set aside and includ-ed in the General Fund for the Presbyterian Women’s budget. Since the women of the church only meet three times a year, versus nine times previously, there is less revenue coming into the general budget because there are six fewer “offerings” taken at meetings. The women voted to set aside 10% of the yard sale proceeds this year to be included in the general fund. Next year, they will reassess whether 10% also needs to be set aside from the Evening of Comfort and Joy.

3. 2019 Yard Sale: The annual Presbyterian Women’s Yard, Bake & Jelly Sale scheduled for April 12-13, 2019. Set-up activities are underway. The women voted for one-half of the proceeds to go to Churchville Week-day Religious Education (WRE) program. Riverheads school district currently does not have an active WRE; however they have purchased land and are in the pro-cess of constructing a building for WRE activities in the future. If it is determined Riverheads can use the monies specifically for the WRE project now, then the other half of the yard sale proceeds will be sent to Riverheads. Otherwise, donations to Riverheads WRE will be delayed until they have an active program in a year or so. If that turns out to be the case, the other half of the 2019 yard sale proceeds will also go to Church-ville WRE this year. These proceeds will be distributed after 10% has been set aside from the total yard sale earnings for the general fund of the women’s budget.

be a new Directory printed this year, as few changes

changes to the Direc-

tory will be prepared and placed in the vestibule of the church for members to

pick up so they can make corrections in their Direc-tories at home.

5. Hebron Cookbook: A question was raised as to whether it might be time to consider publishing another

cooks, and it has been quite a while since the last cook-book was published. After much discussion about the work involved in such a project, the idea was tabled

until someone can be found to spearhead this project. If any member of the congregation is interested in taking this on as a project, please talk with Sandy. The women

of the church are certainly willing to help, but no one attending the meeting felt they could provide leadership for the project. So, those of you who might be thinking

about getting more involved in the church’s activities, this is an opportunity!

6. Circle Meetings in 2019-2020: The women agreed

that meeting three times a year (versus nine previously) had not created any real concerns or problems; there-fore three meetings are scheduled for the 2019-2020

year: September 10, 2019; October 8, 2019; and April 14, 2020. For any questions or concerns about the Pres-byterian Women and their activities in between these

times, call Sandy Showalter, Chairman: 886-8045. Rev. Frank Wyche led the Bible Study with a presen-

tation on Passion Week, including what it is and a chro-

nology of the main events, with Bible references. The meeting adjourned at 2:50 p.m.

Looking Ahead: Outdoor Worship And Church Picnic On July 21

Mark your calendars for a special outdoor worship

service followed by the Church Picnic on Sunday, July 21. The Worship Commit-tee and the Fellowship/Service Committee are

working together to plan this special day at Hebron. Look for more information

in coming weeks in the bul-letin and in the July news-letter.

Pentecost, the Church is reminded again that the full-ness of God is found in the Holy Trinity, which is one

God who is Father, and Son, and Holy Spirit. Hebron will celebrate the Lord’s Supper on Trinity

Sunday. Please prepare your hearts and minds to ob-

serve the sacrament. After Ascension, Pentecost and Trinity Sunday, the

next special day on the Christian Calendar will be

Christ the King Sunday on Nov. 24, which is the last Sunday of the Christian year. The season of Advent (the four Sundays before Christmas) begins the Sunday

after that, which is Dec. 1. Although it is not a day on the liturgical calendar for

the Christian year, a day widely observed in the U.S. is

World Communion Sunday, which is the first Sunday in October – Oct. 6 this year.

Between Trinity Sunday and Christ the King Sunday, the liturgical calendar is in the season of Ordinary

Time. The “ordinary” in Ordinary Time doesn’t mean dull or unimportant; it simply means that the Sundays and the days are ordinary instead of being part of a spe-

cial season, such as Advent or Lent. (Continued On Page 2)

By Rev. Frank Wyche

Easter and special seasons and days on the Christian calendar will come to an end in June, with the next spe-cial days and seasons not coming until October and No-

vember. The season of Easter lasts from Easter Sunday until

the Day of Pentecost, which is 50 days after Easter. Af-

ter Jesus was resurrected on Easter, he appeared to his disciples and followers for 40 days before he ascended into heaven, returning to the fullness of glory as God the Son – the glory he willingly laid aside in order to be

born as the human Jesus, who was Immanuel, “God with us.” The Ascension of the Lord is 40 days after Easter, which this year was May 30, but Ascension will

be observed on Sunday, June 2. The next Sunday, June 9, is Pentecost, which marks

the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Christian com-

munity. Jesus gave the Holy Spirit to the disciples when he appeared to them on the evening of Easter (John 20:22), but on Pentecost the Holy Spirit came

upon believers who were gathered together. The next Sunday, June 16, is Trinity Sunday. After
