Hebron Middle School “Home of the Hawks”

“Helping Students Succeed”

Hebron hosts 2nd Grade Reading and Science Night

Recently, the Hebron Middle School held their 3rd

annual 2nd

Grade Science Night with the help of the middle school science teachers, 2

nd grade teachers, many parents, and lots of members of the National Junior Honor

Society. Approximately 75 students attended this event. This night consisted of five different rooms that taught them about our galaxy, physical health, problem solving, how food could be used in science, and science labs.

To start the night off, the students were divided into 5 groups. Each group would travel throughout the school to each of the 5 rooms set up for the event. The students would spend about 20 minutes at each room. One of the rooms was the digital planetarium. The 2

nd graders got to learn about constellations in our galaxy. After learning

about space, they got to watch a roller coaster video in the dome.

Another room the 2nd

graders got to experience was the Crazy Lab room. This classroom was transformed into a glow-in-the-dark lab room with numerous black-lights set up. Students were allowed to experiment with glow-in-the-dark slime, see what elephant toothpaste is, step inside a giant bubble, watch a mentos fountain as well as a giant fireball. After that, the Tools room was filled with all sorts of fun stuff. Kids got to see large cockroaches, touch a Van de Graaf generator, use science tools, play an on-line science game about animals, and create their own marshmallow catapults.

Next was the Sci-Fi Fitness room. Here students were split into 5 smaller groups. Each group had an obstacle course to traverse their way through. Upon completion, the students learned about heart rate and the benefits of physical fitness. The students got to go through the obstacle course many times .

Finally, was the Food room where 2nd

graders made color changing milk, saw floating tea bags, crushed cans, saw eggs get sucked into bottles and watched pickles glow! They also got to do the egg in the bottle lab, and much more. In this room, Girl Scout troop 30016 provided many helpers with the experiments.

Some quotes from the 2nd

graders the following day at school were:

“The bubble thing was cool.”

“It was awesome.”

“It was fun. I loved the obstacle course and the goo was cool too.”

“The fireball I really liked. They made the ball of fire really big.”

Some quotes from the workers were:

“It was fun seeing the kids have fun.,” said Allison Hano.

“It was exciting to see kids learn science in creative ways,” said Sara Keys.

We’d like to thank the 2nd

grade students, parents, PTG, and our chaperones for helping this be a really fun and successful event.

Special thanks go out the Mrs. Barton, Mrs. Crowley, Mrs. Parks, Mrs. Steinhilber, Mr. Wennmacher, Mr. Brooks, Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Pastrick, Mrs. Reinhold, Mrs. Rhoades, Mrs. Schmidt. Also, thank you to the more than 30 National Junior Honor Society students and middle school students that made this a big success!
