Musical Newsletter No.26 Friday 31st August 2012 Dear Parents This week has been one of the busiest weeks of the year but some exciting things have happened including Intermediate Science Fair entries, the Daffodil Day collection, falling trees (see later), arrival of Pastor Glorious Shoo, Musical rehearsals and first performance this afternoon &with tonight and tomorrow night to come! Phew, I’m glad every week is not like this! The first performance of our musical “Esther – Star of Persia” took place this afternoon in front of over 200 children from local schools and home schoolers. The show went off exceedingly well apart from a few technical glitches and one or two forgotten lines. The musical is quite spectacular and the staff involved in writing the musical, creating the songs, directing and managing the performances, etc. are to be congratulated for such an amazing effort. Special thanks go to Mrs Margaret Sellar, script and songwriter, Mrs Lois Huston, script extension and directing, Mrs Sarah Rauch, song writer and director and Mrs Scott for managing the show. We raise our hats to these 4 amazing women and all the other teachers and parents who have contributed many hours painting backdrops, making stage furniture, designing and printing tickets and programmes, making costumes, sourcing props, etc. etc. Give yourselves a pat on the back if you qualify…you are very appreciated. We have sold a lot more tickets in the last few days but would hope to have both evening performances full to capacity and helping pay for all the expenses. Please make every effort to get your relatives, friends and neighbours to come along. There will be door sales on both nights. A few pointers/reminders/requests: The performance is at the Liberty Christian Church 96 Landsford Cres, Avondale The show starts at 7pm. Please be seated by 6:55pm at the latest Photography and video are not permitted. The shows will be professionally recorded in photo and video format and these will be available for sale next week. (LCD screens held above the audience are quite a distraction to people sitting behind too!) Food and drink are not permitted in the auditorium. There will be an intermission and food and drink is available for purchase. Exit to toilets only during scene changes Please remember to turn your cellphone off are switch to silent mode.

Tree Felling

The Liquid Amber tree near our Junior Adventure playground, without warning, dropped a huge bough onto the playground/hedge, footpath and roadway on Tuesday afternoon about 1:10pm. Thankfully, the children were back in class and there were no cars parked on the roadway where the tree fell.

Closer inspection showed the bough was diseased and weakened by rotten wood (the tree had previously been inspected but showed no visible signs of disease or rot). Mr Kaseem, our caretaker, and Mr Breetvelt immediately took to the fallen branches with a chainsaw and cleared the road to allow the passage of cars.

A tree arborist assessed the tree and recommended it be cut down because of its age and its propensity for “dropping limbs”. So, on Thursday, our tree was cut down, from the top down! We now have light coming into our playground and classrooms where previously the tree shut out the light. Intermediate Science Projects Qualifying Room 11 and 12 Year 7 and 8 students have been setting up their science exhibitions for the NIWA Auckland City Science and Technology Fair. Judging will take place today and public viewing occurs on tonight during 5pm-8pm and Saturday 1st September 10am- 5pm. We encourage you to pop along with the family to look at these outstanding exhibits and maybe spot some prized Hebron exhibits. Secondary netball I popped out to see our secondary girls playing netball at the Mt.Wellington Netball Centre last Friday. The girls played very well and were able to win their game. Special thanks to Mrs Finn and Miss Harris for coaching the team. And thanks to mothers like Mrs Ross for umpiring.

Coming Up

NCEA Fees

Pastor Glorious Shoo Founder and director of the New Life Foundation school and orphanage in Moshi, Tanzania, Pastor glorious Shoo, arrived in New Zealand on Saturday and was officially welcomed to our school on Monday morning at the primary and secondary assemblies. The Junior primary school put on a powhiri for Pastor Glorious and sang some welcome songs. Our 2011 Senior Secondary mission team sang songs to him in English and Swahili which they had previously sung in Tanzania. The boys staged their haka too. Pastor Glorious has also talked to the Hebron Ironmen’s group, visited the Nga Kakano Maori Christian School, preached at the Newton PIC Church, reported to the New Life Foundation (NZ) Trust and caught up with supporters, donors and friends. He is currently in Wellington but will return on Saturday afternoon in time to see our musical on Saturday night. We are deeply indebted to Pastor Glorious and his foundation for hosting our bi-ennial mission trips to Africa and being such a wonderful Christian example to our staff and students by running a Christian orphanage for close to 500 orphaned babies, children and teenagers. Daffodil day Our secondary students once again supported the Daffodil Day collection by manning stands at the New World Supermarket near May Rd and the Stoddard Rd Shopping Centre. They also took up collections from the Stoddard Rd industrial premises. Thanks also to all those staff and students who brought a donation to school today. Your contribution was much appreciated.

Talk by Dr Ian Hunter

Hebron will be hosting a special evening for Y11, Y12 and Y13 students and their parents on Monday the 10th of September. As part of a new English department initiative we have invited Dr Ian Hunter (ex-Hebron parent and author) to present his wonderful Essay Writing seminar. It promises to be an interactive and enjoyable evening that will provide both students and parents with new skills for tackling exam questions and essay answers. Essay writing skills are required right through NCEA, tertiary study and in many workplaces, so this seminar will

benefit all who attend. This is a Student Council funded event which means there is no cost to you. A letter will be sent home with all NCEA students so we can gauge the attendance and set-up accordingly. We hope you can be involved in this wonderful evening. Open Morning We plan to hold an Open Morning on Wednesday 19th September, 9am – noon. Can you tell your friends and relatives about this event and encourage them to come along and seen a Christian school in action? We also have posters which can be put up on church noticeboards. Please request one for your church and I will be happy to pass this onto you.

Parents of Year 11, 12 & 13 students are reminded that NCEA fees are now due. Please attend to this matter promptly otherwise there is a higher penalty fee for late payment. Contact Mrs Finn if you have any queries regarding this. Email: [email protected]
