OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOOD

Lately I have not wanted to watch the news on TV.

Why dishearten myself with all the evil in the world,

the violence, corruption, murder, rape and

destruction!

Everywhere around us there is heartache and pain.

We see how godless mankind has become.

What hope is there for us and for our children’s future?

Well, all through the ages people have had to deal with evil as mankind has

regressed, however there is one sure hope for survival, that God loves and cares for

His children. We will face evil, trials, tests and temptations but God will bring us

through, if we put our trust in Him.

If we want to experience more good in this world, it must start with me and you.

I’ve learned that as I reach out to others - the depressed, the sick, the poor, the

lonely, so my problems become smaller. You might not be able to help the masses,

but start with what you can do, give what you have to God, sow and see how God will

make those seeds grow into fertile plantations.

Let’s take the evil in hand and help where we can. In doing so we will overcome evil

with good.

Make a concerted effort to do a least one good deed everyday.

Tell someone that you love them.

Give them a scripture.

Help bear someone’s load.

Buy someone a gift and tell them you value them.

Give someone a smile or a hug.

Tell someone you appreciate them.

ZOË CLINIC - (Children’s Lifestyle Part 1)

More and more children, due to poor diet are becoming overweight and obese, putting

themselves at risk for sugar diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure problems and even

cancer.

Not only do physical problems have to be addressed but emotional and social

problems as well.

We often tend to reward children with food thus creating a healthy appetite for making

wrong food choices.

We can so easily load up the kilojoules without considering the value of nutrients in a

particular food item.

Here are some helpful tips to avoid overweight and unhealthy children:

Make exercise fun, e.g. riding bike or swimming. Play active games, e.g.

Frisbee. Teach your children to enjoy walking. Avoid too much T.V watching.

Get the whole family involved in exercising, e.g. walking the dog,

dance exercises etc.

Avoid fizzy drinks and too much juice. Always dilute juice with water as 100ml

of juice is equal to one fruit.

Avoid sodas containing aspartame which has negative side effects.

Read food labels. Watch out for preservatives, artificial sweeteners, colourants,

fat and sugar content.

A growing child needs nutrients from each food group. Give your child a

balanced diet.

Encourage your child to eat whole wheat bread and pasta as well as brown

rice.

Pack fruit and raw vegetables in their lunch boxes, e.g. carrot sticks,

cocktail tomatoes and cucumber slices.

RECIPE

Caramel Sauce for Ice Cream

Ingredients:

1 Box Cream Caramels

Milk to thin

Method:

Put cream caramels in a glass jug. Add a little milk. Melt in microwave, stirring

continuously. Add enough milk for the thickness of sauce desired. Pour over ice

cream. Serve.

COMMUNITY CUPBOARD

The Community Cupboard is a ministry to assist those in need in our community with

food parcels and clothing.

In a new initiative we have purchased buckets that can be collected from the church.

The buckets may be filled with various non-perishable food items and toiletries.

When the bucket is filled, it must be handed in and replaced with a new one.

Each grade has been given a bucket for this purpose in their classroom. We would

greatly appreciate it if every learner brings one item per week for their class bucket.

Let us know if you are aware of a need, as we want to help people in our community.

A PLACE I KNOW WELL

I am going to write about a place I know well.

My name is Ezra Gertze and the place that I

know well is my school. My school’s name is Hebron Christian Academy

and it is a school and a church.

When you arrive at the school you will see a tennis court and a jungle gym.

You will also see a tuck shop and a garage (which is a class when you go

inside). There are big palm trees and each teacher has their own parking

place. You will see children playing on the tennis court and on the jungle

gym. The school smells normal but when the septic waste truck comes then

there is an unpleasant smell.

My school is the best and I’m closer to God, thanks to Hebron. Hebron is

like a family to all the kids and to me. Hebron makes me feel happy and

joyful. Hebron Christian Academy is a good school and close to God.

My school makes me feel at home with all my friends.

BEDS

A bed is like soft grass that you feel.

And when you’re sick it can help you

heal. It’s so great after the day’s test,

but when night falls then it’s the best.

At night I think about this in my head.

It’s so wonderful to sleep in a bed,

especially, when those memories fill up

your head.

A DAY AT HEBRON

The prayer class is the best because on Friday’s you get to

dance and sing and we have lots of fun with Pastor Stuart.

Pastor Stuart is the best pastor anyone could have. He is friendly

and he treats you like you are his own child.

The teachers teach us good things about Jesus and they teach

us how to spell new words like, ninety nine and sixty three and a

thousand.

In aftercare you do your homework and then you are allowed to

play with your friends. You get to play hide and seed and tag.

The children at Hebron are very friendly. We do P.T after break

everyday but on Friday we did not do P.T!

We play on the tennis court at break and

we have nice trees to play under.

We also get to go to Chapel on a Friday.

AFTERCARE

Aftercare is the best! We do our homework, eat and

play games. On very hot days Pastor Virgil puts on the

sprinkler and we allowed to run through it and cool

ourselves down.

My Mother is wonderful in many different ways.

died for our sins on the cross.

Then Jesus rose to Heaven.

It’s not about the sweets.

It is about when Jesus rose

from the death. Easter is my

favourite time of the year

because we eat chocolate!!

THE MEANING OF EASTER Easter is about celebrating when Jesus

died on the cross for our sins. When

Jesus died people went to put him in a

cave. Then they closed the cave! Three

days later two men named John and Peter

went to the cave. Peter went inside and it

was empty. Then Mary came and started

to cry. She heard a voice. Then she

looked back and there was a man

standing behind her! It was Jesus!

She was very happy

Easter is when you are happy. You must be thankful for what Jesus did

for you. You must also be grateful! You must be thankful and grateful!

You must be thankful for what Jesus did! Easter is not about Easter

eggs and Easter bunnies, its about Jesus. We must never ever ever say

we hate Jesus. We must always love Jesus. We must never swear be-

cause Jesus died for us.

VISIT TO EDEN PARK

On Friday the 20th March the

school choir together with the

Hebron ladies group, visited

Eden Park Retirement Village.

The choir entertained the

residents by singing five

beautiful songs and Mrs.

Lynette Farquhar presented a

short motivational talk.

The children handed out

sweets, biscuits, chips and

hugs to the residents.

Thank you very much for your

support and donations.

It was such a privilege for us to

bless the aged.

SCHOOL OUTINGS

CLASS IN THE CLOUDS - TABLE MOUNTIAN

The grade 4 - 8 learners visited Table Mountain on the 12th of March and attended

the “Class in the Clouds’ program which forms part of the Science curriculum

HOLOCAUST MUSEUM

The grade 9 learners visited the Holocaust Museum in Cape Town on the 9th of

March. This certainly was a memorable outing and everyone was deeply moved by

the experience

SPORT

A note of thanks to De Kuilen High School for once again

affording our grade 7,8 and 9 learners the privilege of

participating in Netball and Hockey.

Mr. Daniel Bartman is currently running a soccer skills

course at the school for our grade 4-9 boys. The training

is Christian based and takes place during Chapel period

on Friday’s. A special thanks to Mr. Bartman.

FOOD FAIR

The food fair was held on the Friday 27th March. Many thanks to our educators,

parents and learners for all the donations and hard work. Congratulations to Mrs.

Goliath who won the beautiful quilt!

EDUCATOR NEWS

We had to say goodbye to Miss Sonja Maritz from 2015. She accepted a post at a

public school in Kraaifontein. We wish her God’s greatest blessings and wish to thank

her for all she has done at Hebron. She is greatly missed.

We would like to welcome Mrs. Grace Kleinbooi to our team of educators. She has

replaced Miss Sonja Maritz. We thank God for sending her to us and trust that she will

be blessed by working with us.

TIPS FOR PARENTS

How to build your child’s reading, writing and math skills at home

Parents play a key role in building the reading, writing and maths skills of their chil-

dren. It’s not enough just to send your child to school and there is a lot you can do

as a family to build these skills at home.

The following tips cover what you can do for children in Grades R - 6;

Chat with your child about school, friends, activities, teachers and assign-

ments.

Set goals. Make sure they are attainable, and focus on achieving them one at

a time.

Praise your child for each individual achievement. Focus on your child’s

strengths and celebrate their progress.

Encourage your child if they fail a test. Your child is not a failure. With nurtur-

ing and support, they will progress. Use failure as a tool for improvement.

Homework - What can parents do?

Stay informed. Talk to your child’s teacher.

Know the purpose of the homework and

the class rules.

Show enthusiasm about school and homework.

Help your child with time management and planning. Set aside time each day

for homework. Don’t leave homework for just before bedtime. Work on pro-

jects over weekends. Break assignments into smaller, more manageable

time frames. Avoid rushing about in the morning before school. Prepare

clothes and other items the night before.

Provide a quiet study area with a desk and comfortable chair. Ensure that

your child has the required stationery and a dictionary.

Never do your child’s homework!

Teach your child how to do proper research. Utilise magazines, the library

and the internet.

How to support your child in reading and writing.

Let your child read to you every day.

Let your child see you reading.

Let your child read for fun in any

language he or she prefers.

Chat to your children about what they

are reading - who are the main

characters, what happened to them and why, was this good or bad?

(This provides a good opportunity to talk about values)

Cook together. Read recipes and labels together. Compile a family

cookbook.

Explore books together. Ask questions, point out new words and

ideas. Discuss pictures. Discuss characters and their motivation.

Relate these to your family’s life.

Write with your child. Provide lots of writing materials and paper.

Encourage your child to draw and write on their own. Encourage your

child to write thank you notes to grandparents. Make to do lists.

Visit the library often. Encourage your children to get their own library

card. Let them read a variety of books.
