Al Cantello is now in his 53rd season at the Naval Academy and 48th as cross country head coach. Since his arrival at U.S.N.A. over 50 years ago, the Midshipmen have been one of the most consistent men’s cross country programs, both regionally and nationally.

Cantello led the Mids to six of the last seven Patriot League Champion-ships from 2008-11 and 2013-14 while garnering conference coach of the year accolades each time.

In 47 seasons at the helm of the cross country program, Cantello boasts a 244-70-1 career record.

Cantello’s teams have also shined in the classroom in three of the past five seasons the Mids earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team accolades with a team GPA over 3.00.

Cantello has coached several standout runners in Annapolis in both cross country and as an assistant coach with the Navy track team. Most re-cently, Stephen Schroeder (2013-pres) won the Patriot League individual title and qualified for the 2014 NCAA Championship with a ninth-place finish out of 156 runners at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. Schroeder went on to place 182nd at the NCAAs.

Andrew Hanko (2007-10) became the first runner in program history to win consecutive Patriot League cross country titles. The three-time First-Team All-Patriot League honoree qualified for the NCAA Championship, finishing 119th at the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships.

Jon Clemens received All-America honors during the 1996 cross country season, while John Mentzer was named a 1997 All-American in both indoor (5,000 meters) and outdoor (10,000 meters) track. Michael Ryan earned simi-lar honors during the 1999 indoor track season for his 4:01.57 time in the mile, and Erik Schmidt took fifth place in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championship

in March 2003.In addition, two of Navy’s distance relay teams were ranked among the

nation’s top 15 during the 1999 outdoor campaign. The mile relay team of Eric Adams, John McNamara, Ryan Runge and Ryan was fourth in the nation, while the distance medley relay team of Adams, Torrance Chaplin, Karlton Holston and Ryan was nationally ranked, as well.

As a result of his teams’ success, Cantello has been amply recognized, including being named the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year three times (1984, `85 and `92) and has been Patriot League Coach of the Year each of the last three seasons. In 1997, the Naval Academy Alumni Association awarded Cantello the Distinguished Athletic Leadership Award for a coach or faculty member who did the most for the physical development of the Midship-men in physical education. Cantello also received the inaugural Tom Hamilton Teaching/Coaching Award, as voted by his peers that same year.

From 1981-88, Cantello held a dual coaching role, guiding Navy’s men’s indoor and outdoor track squads while maintaining his cross country duties. As Navy’s head track coach, Cantello led the Mids to a 67-9-1 dual meet record. During the 1986-87 academic year, his combined record in cross country, in-door and outdoor track & field was a remarkable 23-1.

Cantello’s all-time head coaching record in cross country, indoor and out-door track is 321-82-2, good for a .796 career winning percentage. Among his victories are 49 N-Stars, including 36 as the head coach of the cross country program - more than any other Navy mentor in one sport. Cantello has authored the Mids to a 36-10-1 mark against Army, prior to which Navy held a 12-19 record against the Black Knights.

A 1955 graduate of La Salle, Cantello was a two-time All-American in the javelin throw. In 2009, he was inducted into the Penn Relays Wall of Fame for becoming the first three-time winner in the javelin throw at the famed event. He was also enshrined as a charter member of La Salle’s Hall of Athletes in 1961 and in the spring of 2012, Cantello was inducted in the inaugural class of the Middle Athletic Conference Hall of Fame.

A former world-class competitor in the javelin, Cantello once held every national and international record in the event. In 1959, he set a world record in the javelin and competed for the U.S. Olympic Team the following year in the 1960 Games in Rome. In 1964, Sport magazine named Cantello to its all-time track & field team and voted him the world’s greatest competitor in the javelin.

Cantello and his late wife, Jackie, are the parents of three adult children - Karla McMahon, Karen O’Kane and the late Albert Jr. - and seven grandchil-dren.

Season OutlookAfter winning its second-straight league title, the Navy men’s cross coun-

try team was unanimously selected to win a third title in the 2015 Patriot League Preseason poll, which was announced by the league office on Friday.

After Navy received all 18 first-place votes and 162 points, archrival Army (130) and Boston University (124) were selected to finished second and third, respectively. Bucknell, who finished up as the 2014 runner-ups, were picked to place fourth with 118 points and American was right behind with 102 to round out the top five. Lehigh (96), Holy Cross (66), Colgate (46), Lafayette (32) and Loyola (24) capped off the field of 10

Navy will be led by senior team captain Sam Peckham (Valencia, Calif.). Peckham has been a mainstay for the Mids the last two seasons, finishing as one of the Navy runners meet in and meet out. He has finished as an all-league runner the past two years, placing as high as fifth in last season’s champion-ship.

Behind Peckham is a strong contingent of upperclassmen with a wealth of experience to carry Navy throughout the season and into the league cham-pionship. Headling the group is senior Steve Schroeder (Monticello, Ill.), who took home the individual crown for the first time in his career. Juniors Lucas Stalnaker (Tega Cay, S.C.) and Hale Bullen (Annapolis, Md.) also return, finish-ing ninth and 14th, respectively, in last season’s championship meet to garner all-league laurels.

In the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Associa-tion Preseason Regional Poll, Navy is ranked fifth in the Mid-Atlantic. The Mids are ranked ahead of Bucknell (10th) and Lehigh (11th). In the Northeast poll, Boston University is ranked 11th and Army West Point is 13th.

Willie McCool Monument The Willie McCool Monument on the USNA Cross Country Course memori-alizes Navy’s 1982 team captain that was one of seven astronauts that perished in Space Shuttle Columbia during re-entry on February 1, 2003. The last audible transmission received from Columbia before the tragedy occurred at 8:59 a.m. that morning - 16 minutes from the shuttle’s scheduled landing at 9:15 a.m. On Navy’s home course during his senior season in 1982, McCool recorded a career-best time of 24:27 - which stands as the 28th-fastest Navy time in course history. The monument is located where he would have been 8:27 into the race during that day - 16 minutes from home. McCool, 41, was a former test pilot in the Navy and served that role for the STS-107 (Space Shuttle Columbia). He received a bachelor of science degreee in applied science from the U.S Naval Academy in 1983, a master of science degree from the University of Maryland in 1985, and a master of science degree in aero-nautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1992. McCool, as a member of the Blue Team, worked with many experiments and was also responsible for maneuvering Columbia as part of several experiments mounted in the shuttle’s payload bay. Selected by NASA in 1996, McCool was making his first spaceflight.

PATRIOT LEAGUENow in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic

and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. The Patriot League will celebrate its 25th Anniversary as an all-sport conference during the 2015-16 season.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had 92 percent of its teams score above the national APR average in the most recent data, and 101 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2014-15 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams have accomplished the following:

H 101 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in Academic Progress Rate (APR), with 88 of those squads earning perfect scores.

H The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in Public Recognition Awards, while Bucknell, Lafayette and Colgate all placed in the top six nationally.

H 92 percent of Patriot League teams scored above the national average in APR, while more than 70 percent had at least a 990 score in the multi-year rate.

H Four Patriot Leaguers were named Senior CLASS Award finalists, with Colgate’s Caroline Brawner (Women’s Soccer) and Army West Point’s Sam Somers (Men’s Lacrosse) earning first-team recognition.

H Brawner was also one of the League’s nominations for the NCAA Woman of the Year award along with Boston University’s Valentina Cerda Eimbcke (Field Hockey).

H Navy won the Corvias Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the third time in the last four years.

H The Mids also won the men’s title while Boston University repeated as women’s champion.

H Twenty-four Patriot Leaguers were named All-Americans in team sports, with first-team status for Byers and Fordham’s Mason Halter in football and Navy’s Joseph Greenspan in men’s soccer

H Four Patriot Leaguers competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, and Lehigh’s Elizabeth Weiler became the League’s first female All-American since 2005.
