2012 CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW

2 Saint Joseph’s University

Under the direction of head coach Mike Glavin, the men’scross country team returns 17 letterwinners and adds seven newfaces to open up the 2012 season. The 2011 squad saw remark-able success as it placed in the top third of five meets last season, including a first-place finish at the Charlotte Duels, a third-placefinish at the Atlantic 10 Championships, and a seventh-place finishat the NCAA Regionals. Led by 2011 NCAA Championship partici-pant and graduate Kevin McDonnell, the Hawks demonstrated anundeniable growth toward development and, according to Glavin, that growth is here to stay due to the limitless amount of commit-ment found among the squad’s 25 runners.

“The guys are dedicated, and it’s phenomenal,” said Glavin.“There are so many facets to coaching, but that part of the job, worrying about whether or not they’re out working or not, is nota problem that I have. If anything, my problem is that they want torun too much, but from a coach’s point of view, that’s a betterproblem to have.”

Saint Joseph’s will look to continue its progression towardsuccess under the experience and leadership of senior co-captainsPatrick Donnelly and Jon Mazzio.

Donnelly, a transfer from Missouri, joined the team inJanuary of his sophomore year and did not waste any time makingan impact. Last season, Donnelly finished fourth on the squad and42nd overall with a time of 25:56 at the IC4A Championships andplaced seventh overall (15:53.80) to help Saint Joseph’s win theCharlotte Duels. The senior also placed in the top half of both thePaul Short Invitational, finishing 192nd out of 402 runners, and theAtlantic 10 Championships, placing 50th out of 124 runners.

“In terms of quality, the type of depth that Patrick addsmakes us as deep of a squad as we’ve been in at least a decade ortwo,” stated Glavin. “We’re much better this year in depth thanwe have been in the past.”

Mazzio, a 2011 Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team selection outof West Chester, Pa. is described by his head coach as a “phenom-enal story” for the Hawks and a “legitimate force in the north-east.” Mazzio was a five-time top five finisher for Saint Joseph’s in2011, finishing first on the squad at both the Paul ShortInvitational and the IC4As and second with both a seventh-placeoverall finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships and 24th-place fin-ish at the NCAA Regionals. The senior standout also placed third atthe Charlotte Duels, proving to be a crucial element to the team’sfirst-place finish at the meet.

“We go out and find people who we think are going to workto be as good as they can be, and we’re banking as coaches that asgood as they can be is going to be better than average,” discussedGlavin. “Jon was an above-average two-miler out of high schooland last fall he was All-Conference, All-Mid-Atlantic Region, andAll-IC4A Northeast. A guy who was a little better than average justisn’t supposed to do that.”

Graduate student Dan Roark and seniors Dave Manion andAndrew Townsend round out the final year veterans for the 2012squad.

Roark came to the Hawks two seasons ago from Quinnipiacand has been solid as a welcomed addition to the Saint Joseph’sfamily of runners. Roark finished in the top five for the Hawks infive of his six meets, including notching personal bests in both the

5K (15:51.87) at the Charlotte Duels and the five-mile (25.52) atthe IC4A Championships.

According to Glavin, Manion and Townsend are alike in thesense that they run cross country to prepare for track and field, but both runners have found success is cross country.

Manion undoubtedly found himself a huge part of the team’ssuccess last season, placing second on the team and 24th overallwith a time of 28:10.97 at the Delaware Invitational 8K.

Townsend ran the first three races of the season for theHawks in 2011 and notched season bests in the 5K (17:05.40) atthe Blue/Gold Classic and the 8K (28:41.32) at the DelawareInvitational, where he finished third on the squad and 28th overallin a field of 46 runners.

At the core of the cross country team’s returning group are12 juniors and sophomores, highlighted by juniors MichaelRankin, Aaron Leskow, and Tommy O’Kane and sophomores PaulSzulewski and Logan Mohn.

Rankin’s 2011 season highlight came as he notched a person-al best in the 8K at the Atlantic 10 Championships with a time of25:18, finishing 23rd overall. Leskow competed in three races, placing second at the Charlotte Duels and recording a personalbest 8K time of 25:06 at the Princeton Invitational, before beingsidelined with an injury. The junior standout was the “number twoman” on the squad until the injury and, assuming good health, willwork to fill the void left from McDonnell’s graduation.

O’Kane finished in the top half of four races last season andplaced third on the squad and sixth overall at the Blue/GoldClassic, the first meet of the 2011 season. Szulewski was namedthe 2011 Rookie of the Year for his 18th-place finish at the Atlantic10 Championships. The then-freshman landed in the top five forthe Hawks five times last season, including a first-place squad andfourth-place overall finish at his debut collegiate race at theBlue/Gold Classic, where he clocked in at 16:00.50. In each of thefinal four races of the season, Szulewski and the team both fin-ished in the top third.

Mohn ran in seven meets and finished in the top five for theHawks six times. The highlights of his season came when he fin-ished second of all Hawks at both the Blue/Gold Classic where hefinished fifth overall and the Paul Short Invitational, where hecrossed the finish line in 118th place out of 402 total runners.

“In that depth I’m talking about,” explained Glavin, “we’vegot three juniors who are going to be really good. Some kind of

nod has to go to Mike, Aaron, and Tommy. These are juniors whohave contributed last year. Then there are two sophomores, Pauland Logan. As freshmen, they proved that they are significant fac-tors in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Those two are coming back assophomores now understanding the training to get stronger.”

Rounding out the Hawks’ experience will be junior MaxMargiotta and sophomore Brady Deckert, each of who ran threeraces last season including the IC4A Championship race, juniorsRyan Anderson and Sean Staltari, and sophomores StevenButenewicz,Michael Cassidy, and Thomas Harrington.

The Hawks will see new talent in graduate student JamesMcBride, a transfer from Millersville University. McBride ran forfour seasons at Millersville, and Glavin believes that this experi-ence will further add to the squad’s drive toward success in 2012.

“James adds an enormous amount of qualitative depth tothis team. I think that with the group he’s now training with thathe will get remarkably better by the end of this year.”

Six talented freshmen from six different states join the squadin Rhode Island Academic All-State selection Michael Coleman,two-time Pennsylvania All-State First Team selection Quinn Davis,two-time Delaware All-State selection Scott Davis, MassachusettsLeague All-Star selection John Egan, 5K record-holder at theLoyola School in New York Liam Murphy, and three-time OceanCounty, New Jersey champion Joe Tront.

The men’s cross country team demonstrated a significantincrease in improvement last season, and with Coach Glavin’sbelief in a 2012 squad that will see 17 letterwinners return alongwith seven new faces of possibility, this season already appears tobe a season that will be remembered.

The 2012-13 men’s indoor and outdoor track and field teamreturns 35 letterwinners from last season, highlighted by 18 IC4A quali-fiers and 15 individual meet champions. With the addition of 14 new-comers to a squad that saw tremendous growth and progress in 2011-12, head coachMike Glavin holds a high level of expectation for successthis season. Led by a quartet of senior captains in Garrett Barbalinardo,Patrick Donnelly, Jon Mazzio, and Andrew Townsend, Saint Joseph'shas a definite chance at remarkable success during the 2012-13 indoorand outdoor track and field seasons.

HURDLESThe junior trio of Derrick Henry, Griff Roberts, and Jamie Rodgers

returns to lead a core group of veterans in the hurdles this season.Rodgers led the team in the outdoor 400m hurdles (54.58) while Henryand Roberts posted solid times in the outdoor season as well.

“Derrick is an intermediate hurdler and I have a feeling that thiswill be a breakthrough year for him,” stated Glavin of his three-year hur-dler. “He’s training consistently with Roberts and Rodgers and I thinkthat this will be the breakout year for him. Roberts walked on as a fresh-man and Rodgers came out for the team last year, and they all run with-in a second of each other. If they keep that development going, we couldput three guys in the outdoor finals this year.”

Rounding out the hurdlers will be sophomores Nicholas BeninatoandMatthew Sutorius. Sutorius led the Hawks in short hurdles last sea-son with team-best times in the indoor 55m and 60m hurdles as well asthe outdoor 110m hurdles.

SPRINTSAfter an explosive sophomore season in which he led the team in

the indoor 55m, 60m, 200m, and 300m and outdoor 100m and 200m,junior Jon Eisemann returns as Saint Joseph’s “go-to” sprinter.Described by his coach as “the number one short sprinter” at SaintJoseph’s, Eisemann qualified for IC4As in the outdoor 100m dash lastseason and proves to be a threat all the way up to the quarter-mile.

“Jon is hardworking,” said Glavin. “If he feels like you’re not givinghim enough work in one area in which he thinks he can improve, he addsthat in by himself.”

Sophomore Tyler Gallen posted team-best times in both theindoor and outdoor 400m and the indoor 500m. Gallen won the 500m atGiegengack with a time of 1:04.11 while Roberts took the indoor 600mfor the Hawks and won the 500m at Thompson with a time of 1:07.97.

Junior Tyler Dougherty will also return to the sprints after placingin the top three on the team in all but one of his sprinting events last sea-son.

Leading the long sprints will be captain Barbalinardo, who qualifiedfor the IC4As with a time of 500m (1:05.10) at PSU Nationals last season.Joining him to compete in the long sprints will be junior Peter Larmannand sophomoresMatthew McGarvey and Brendan Robert.

Beninato, Henry, Sutorius, Rodgers, juniors Christopher Kinneyand Michael Yap, sophomores David Furman and Nick Pedano, andfreshmen Christopher Banks and Alec Peabody will also look to add aplethora of talent, both old and new, to the sprinting events.

DISTANCEIn the 2011-12 indoor and outdoor track seasons, the distance

events saw 17 returning runners break through IC4A qualifying times in11 different events. In addition to individual IC4A goals, there were also15 champions in nine different events at the combined outdoor andindoor individual meets.

In terms of IC4A qualifiers, Steven Butenewicz qualified in theindoor 800m, captain Townsend in the outdoor 800m and indoor1000m, Dave Manion in the indoor 1000m, Logan Mohn in the indoor

1000m and mile and outdoor 1500m and steeple, Aaron Leskow in theoutdoor 1500m, and Kevin McDonnell in the indoor 3000m and 5000mand outdoor 5000m and 10,000m.

Townsend finished second in the Atlantic 10 last season in the800m at the outdoor finals and scored highly at the IC4As in the 1000m.

“Andrew has become a factor in the 800m in the Northeast,” saidGlavin, “and I’m expecting that he’ll end this year as one of the four orfive fastest half-milers in Saint Joseph’s history.”

Captain Mazzio qualified for the IC4As in three events: the indoor3000m and outdoor 5000m and 10,000m.

“Mazzio is a phenominal story for us and is what you would callthe prototypical Hawk athlete,” said Glavin. “We don’t always get thesehardcore stars. We go out and find people who we think are going towork to be as good as they can be, and we’re banking as coaches thatas good as they can be is going to be better than average. Jon was anabove-average two-miler out of high school and he is now 14:23 forthe 5000 last spring, which is an outstanding time.”

The 4x400 team of Henry, Robert, and Gallen, the 4x800 team ofManion, Butenewicz and Matthew McGarvey, and the DMR team ofTommy O’Kane, Michael Rankin, Dougherty, and Jamie Gentile alsoqualified for the indoor IC4As.

In terms of individual meet winners for the indoor season,McGarvey won the 800m at Jack Pyrah, Mohn won the mile at theGotham Cup, McDonnell won the 3000m at Geigengack, and PaulSzulewski won the 3000m at the PSU Relays.

The 4x400 team of Henry, Robert, and Gallen won three differentmeets, with their fastest time coming in at 3:17.89 at Geigengack.Roberts and Kyle Lampart were a part of the 4x400 winning team atThompson while Gentile and Beninato were part of the 4x400 winningteam at Delaware.

“Kyle is one of the many guys we’ve had through here who has yetto break through, but he’s got one more year left and he fights for it anddoes everything to deserve success, “ said Glavin. “This is the season forit.”

The 4x800 team of Manion, Butenewicz, and McGarvey won thePSU Relays.

Junior sprinter Jon Eisemann

2012-13 TRACK & FIELD PREVIEW“Steve [Butenewicz] is another one of those half-milers who is

going to make the 4x800 team really good,” said Glavin. “It’ll be one ofthe top at the IC4A East Indoor Championships and it’ll probably be oneof the top ten relays on the Northeastern Seaboard.”

According to Glavin, the solid sophomore group of Gallen, whoplaced fourth in the 400m at the outdoor A-10s, McGarvey and Robertwill prove to be an offensive threat in the relay department this season.

“McGarvey will be on that 4x8 and the other two freshmen bothmade the championship 4x4, so all three are quarter-milers that are real-ly high level,” said Glavin. “We have a really good sophomore class, andthey are going to make a real impact this season.”

During the outdoor season, the 4x100 team of Henry, Dougherty,Gallen, and Eisemann, the 4x400 team of Gallen, Barbalinardo, andRobert.

“Check any results from the end of the season and Garrett[Barbalinardo] was on the 4x400m team because he wants to be on that4x400 and is having no part in being kicked off,” said Glavin of his seniorcaptain. “He is a tough, hard-training competitor who can now handlethe workouts and goes all in. The interesting thing about him is that hehas very little time for anybody else who is not all in, which makes a goodleader.”

The 4x800 team of Townsend, Butenewicz, and Manion also quali-fied for the IC4As.

“Dave [Manion] is another one of those half-milers who will againbe a hinge in the 4x800m relay. Last year he ran a 1:53 in a relay split andhe’s one of those guys who always finds a way to fight his way back on.”

In terms of individual meet winners for the outdoor season,McGarvey won the 800m at the Lafayette 7-Way, Mohn won the 3000msteeple at the Lafayette 7-Way, Manion won the 800 at the DelawareOpen. The 4x100 team of Henry, Dougherty, Gallen, and Eisemann wonthe Delaware Open while the 4x400 team of Gallen, Butenewicz,

Roberts, and Henry won the Delaware Open.McDonnell won the 5000 at the Penn Relays and 10,000 at the

Atlantic 10 Championships and has indoor and outdoor eligibility left thisseason.

“Kevin comes in and has a work ethic that is like, “Here’s where Iam, but can I get there? If i get there, how long will it take until I can getthere?” He’s staring at the possibility and goal of making the NCAAfinals.”

McDonnell made the NCAA preliminaries two years in a row, butonly 12 runners from the entire eastern half of the nation are selectedto travel to the NCAA finals.

“He wants to be among the top 24 individuals who make it to theNCAA finals,” said Glavin.

Glavin demonstrates nothing short of praise for the following twoupperclassmen, captain Donnelly and graduate student Dan Roark.

Donnelly, a transfer from Missouri, joined the team in January ofhis sophomore year and did not waste any time making an impact.

“The improvements in him as an athlete have been phenomenalfor us, and he’s a type of competitor that gives us depth on this squad.”

Roark, a transfer from Quinnipiac, missed making the NCAA pre-liminary round in the 3000 steeple, a race with 35 barriers, by 1.5 sec-onds last season, proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the event.

“Dan transferring here was a great thing for us. He has personalityand character and he keeps things lively. At the same time, he ran a 9:05in the steeple, so he’s high in quality and has sheer, dogged determina-tion.”

Transfer graduate student James McBride, juniors Ryan Anderson,Max Margiotta, Sean Staltari, sophomores Michaelel Cassidy, BradyDeckert, Thomas Harrington, and 11 newcomers will round out the mid-dle distance runners for the Hawks.

JUMPSThe Hawks will return two jumpers insenior Vinh Nghi To and Yap.

To will return for both the longjump and triple jump while Yap willfocus his efforts on the long jump.

“Vinny walked on as a jumper, and he and Yap work together all thetime. They make sure that they getcertain stuff fromme and do it on theirown during one part of the day andthen run with the sprinters at anotherpart of the day. He simply wanted tocontinue what he was doing from highschool.”

Entering the mix of jumpers willbe freshman rookie, Peabody.

“Alec is a highly talented sprinterwith a phenomenal mastery of his longjump. He will be a good sprinter andjumper for us.”

Mike Glavin, a 1978 graduate of SJU, enters his 25th year as the Hawks head men's cross country and track coach.

After leading the Hawks to their fourth Atlantic 10 Championship title in cross country in 2009, he was named the

Atlantic 10 Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career (1992, 1998, 2000, 2009). Under his

watchful eye, the Hawks have produced a total of 46 All-Conference harriers and five NCAA qualifiers. During his tenure,

Saint Joseph's has also seen five athletes earn Runner of the Year honors and four earn Rookie of the Year awards and

11 student athletes become Academic All-Conference performers.

Throughout Glavin's track career, the Hawks have twice received the Runner-Up Award in the Atlantic

10 (2001, 2002), as he has coached 25 NCAA Regional Qualifiers and six IC4A Champions. To add to his

resume, he has coached a total of 138 All-Conference members and 34 Academic All-Conference honorees.

During his career, five student-athletes have been named A-10 Performer of the Year, three earned Rookie

of the Year recognition and one was the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year.

Glavin returned to his alma mater after a highly successful 10-year stint as track and cross country coach

at Paul VI High School in Haddonfield, N.J. During his tenure there, he led the cross country team to a phe-

nomenal 110-0 record, including three state championships in 1984, 1985 and 1988. His track record was an

equally impressive 60-18, which included four South Jersey championships and the 1989 State crown. Glavin was inducted into the Paul VI

Alumni Hall of Fame in October, 2009.

A stellar performer for the Hawks as an undergrad, Glavin established numerous records, including the outdoor track record for the three-

mile, the 5,000-meter runs, and the indoor record for the mile and two-mile. He also held the Belmont Plateau cross country record with a time

of 25:36. Glavin qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in both his junior and senior years.

Finnesey Field has been home to 10 different varsity squads atSaint Joseph’s University as it enters its 84th year. Opened in 1929 ashome to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerouschanges over the years and has been home to over a thousand SJUvarsity games, matches and track meets.

Themost recent upgrade happened in the summer of 2008 as theAstroTurf, laid down in 2001, was replaced with new, state-of-the-artTigerTurf. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber mate-rial in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons.

Home to the men’s and women’s track and field squads, the fieldhas seen other modifications done to it since its inception in 1929. Theprospect of a 70,000-seat bowled stadium for football was dashedwhen the sport was discontinued following the 1939 season.

Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Finnesey homeuntil 1959. In 1960, the original grandstand and the hillside seatingnear Overbrook Avenue were eliminated as Villiger (now Post) Halland the Bluett Theatre were built. In the process of the 1960 construc-tion, the field’s elevation was raised five feet to its current location.

In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Finnesey a trulymulti-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered theuse of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next toMandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadi-um.

Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer started in 1958 and played every sea-son but one (1960) at Finnesey. Additionally, men’s and women’slacrosse began in 1993 and have called Finnesey home since theirinception, while the women’s soccer team began playing there in1996. The Saint Joseph’s Hawkmascothas been flapping its wings for 57years, having celebrated its goldenanniversary in 2005-06.

One of the most famous mas-cots in college sports, the Hawk isbest known for staying in constantmotion by flapping its wingsthroughout every basketball gameand representing the Saint Joseph’smotto, “The HawkWill Never Die.”

Saint Joseph’s athletic teamshave been recognizedwith the nick-name “Hawks” since 1929. At thattime, the school’s yearbook editorinitiated a contest among the stu-dent body for a symbol. More than100 submissions were narrowed,

with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. Thename was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of ourcrimsonandgray athletes and it is suggestiveof theaerial attackwhichhas made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discon-tinued at SJU following the 1939 season.

The Hawk has won numerous accolades and was a nominee forinduction to theMascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

Saint Joseph’s University

The goal entering the 2011 cross country campaign was tofinish among the conference’s elite and improve on the 2010 finishof seventh at the Atlantic 10 Championships. The Saint Joseph’smen’s cross country squad, led by head coachMike Glavin, did justthat, instilling a blend of youthful spark and veteran experience, enroute to a third place finish at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championships.

Showcasing a younger core of runners, the Hawks openedthe 2011 campaign at the Blue/Gold Classic in Pennington, N.J.Freshman Paul Szulewski led SJU with a fourth-place performanceas he completed the 5K course in 16:00.05. Classmate Logan Mohnfollowed up in fifth while sophomore Tommy O’Kane crossed thefinish line in sixth.

After a strong start from the young talent, the whole squadmade the trip to Charlotte to compete at Frank Liske Park, the even-tual location of the 2011 A-10 Championships. Led by captain KevinMcDonnell’s first-place time of 15:25.07, a time that would eventu-ally earn him A-10 Performer of the Week, the Hawks would go 5-0at the Duels. Sophomore Aaron Leskow finished in second and jun-ior Jon Mazzio took third to round out the top three spots.

A majority of the team took the following week off fromcompetition before heading to the 37th annual Paul ShortInvitational. At the invitational, Mazzio paced Saint Joseph’s with a107th-place finish at 25:36. Mohn followed him up in 118th andLeskow grabbed 136th place.

McDonnell continued his strong season as he finished sec-ond at the Princeton Invitational at West Windsor Fields the follow-ing weekend. Leskow followed with an eighth-place time asSzulewski finished 26th and Mohn came in at 34th. The Hawksswept the A-10 weekly awards as McDonnell picked up Performer ofthe Week for the second time in 2011 and Szulewski garneredRookie of the Week.

With all of its previous success, SJU entered the Atlantic 10Championships confidently and composed. Following up in 18th,Szulewski was named Rookie of the Year for his performance as hehelped Saint Joseph’s to a third-place finish at the A-10s.

Following the conference championships, the Hawks trav-eled to Princess Anne, Md. to compete in the 10K NCAA Regionals.Led by McDonnell’s fourth-place finish of 30:40.9, Saint Joseph’s fin-ished the weekend seventh of the 25 teams in competition. The squad closed out the year at the IC4A Championshipsat Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The Hawks finished fifth in afield of 15 teams, and Mazzio led the Hawks for the second time

with a 25th-place finish, clocking in at 24:43. ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE

www.sjuhawks.com

2012-13 Men’s Cross Country & Track

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now theAtlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What startedas an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliationhas grown into a 16-university, 21-sport league thatis universally hailed as one of the best conferencesin the country.

That growth and prominence is a direct resultof the ideals and commitments of the member insti-tutions of the Atlantic 10 – Butler University, theUniversity of Dayton, Duquesne University, FordhamUniversity, The George Washington University, LaSalle University, University of Massachusetts,University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Universityof Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St.Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University,Saint Louis University, Temple University, VirginiaCommonwealth University, and Xavier University.

In 2011-12, the Atlantic 10 was proactive innavigating the sweeping conference realignmentissues, adding Butler University and VirginiaCommonwealth University, both of which began fullmembership on July 1, 2012. The league wasdeclared the “winner” of conference realignment byseveral media outlets, arguably strengthening theleague to its best-ever lineup with a record 16 mem-bers institutions. The additions were part of a five-year Strategic Initiative Plan that was adopted dur-ing the 2010-11 academic year.

The 16 member institutions of the A-10 areunited and strengthened by their diversity. Each isextraordinary in its educational mission, whether ofa Catholic faith, a private university or a land grantinstitution. The varied pursuits of each memberprove that there are many threads that weave thefabric for a great conference.

The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total popu-lation of over 82 million people within its geograph-ic footprint of nine states and the District ofColumbia, will crown champions in 21 sports thisyear: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women'sindoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's andwomen's swimming & diving, men's and women'stennis, and women's volleyball.

The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made astrong commitment to making the academic andathletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recog-nize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which

cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5grade point average or better, recognized a record2,728 student-athletes in 2011-12.

The league sponsors Academic All-Conferenceteams in each of its sports and honors two student-athletes as the A-10 Student-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgradu-ate scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes.In 2011-12, nearly 200 student-athletes earnedAcademic All-Conference recognition, whileDayton’s YvonneMarten, Jennifer Nalepa from SaintLouis, Marissa Norman of Rhode Island andCharlotte’s Macey Ruble received postgraduatescholarship grants.

The Atlantic 10 has 56 of the more than 950Division I sports teams being honored with publicrecognition awards for their latest multi-yearAcademic Progress Rate scores. The Atlantic 10Conference ranks fourth in number of teams publi-cally recognized by the NCAA and fifth in overall APRaverage among all 32 Division I Conferences with a981 average. The league boasted 40 squads withperfect scores and 104 teams with a score of 990 orbetter. In total, 188 A-10 teams were at or above thenational average, representing 70 percent of all A-10teams. Of the 21 championship sponsored sports inthe Atlantic 10, 19 had a sport average higher thanthe national average. There are six sports (fieldhockey, women's cross country, lacrosse, women'sswimming & diving, women's indoor track & fieldand women's outdoor track & field) in which everyA-10 team in that sport is above the national aver-age.

The Atlantic 10 boasted a third-place ranking inthe single-year Graduation Success Rate (GSR)among all Division I leagues. Measured in a six-yearwindow, 89 percent of freshman enrolling in an A-10institution in 2004 graduated. Twelve of the league'sinstitutions were above the national four-year GSRaverage of 8o percent and five of those programs,Dayton, George Washington, Richmond, SaintJoseph's and Xavier are all over 90 percent. TheAtlantic 10 also rates in the Top 10 in men's basket-ball, women's basketball and baseball in the single-year GSR. The league is ninth nationally in men'sbasketball, graduating at a 74 percent rate, nearlyseven percent above the national average. Inwomen's basketball the league ranks sixth with anincredible 96 percent graduation rate for its 2004freshman class, 10 percent higher than the nationalaverage. In baseball, the A-10 is tied for third nation-ally with an 87 percent GSR, also 10 percent higherthan the national average.

Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is anindependent, Catholic, Jesuit universityteaching disciplined reasoning, effectivecommunication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old CityPhiladelphia to Stiles Street in NorthPhiladelphia to its current location on CityAvenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued togrow and change with the times. TheUniversity combines the Jesuit traditionof academic excellence, a history of serv-ice and an ideal campus location to pro-duce successful students who strive tomake a good world even better.

Full-time, undergraduate day enroll-ment comprises approximately 4,650 stu-dents. Graduate, evening and executiveprograms push total enrollment to morethan 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACA-DEMIC EXCELLENCE

Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognizedacademic reputation is confirmed byongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s,U.S. News & World Report andPeterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intel-lectual inquiry and personal concernmanifests itself in small, challenging class-es taught by a caring faculty. Graduateassistants do not teach, so undergradu-ates can be sure they are receiving thevery best educational experience fromtrained experts. One-on-one interactionbetween students and faculty is a reality atSaint Joseph’s.

A solid liberal arts curriculum providesacross-the-board learning for every student.Supporting that curriculum are comprehen-sive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that pre-pares students not only for employment andgraduate school, but for life itself.

In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, whichhouses the Erivan K. Haub School ofBusiness, the Center for FoodMarketing andthe region's first "Teletorium" and "MootBoardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot inter-national academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it islocated near the corner of 54th Street andCity Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICEThe students of Saint Joseph’s

University are dedicated to making today’sworld even better. A natural spirit of volun-teerism has enabled the University’s com-munity service programs to become themost popular extracurricular activities oncampus. In addition, a Service Learning pro-gram allows students to receive academiccredit for their work outside the classroom.

SJU offers local, national and interna-tional opportunities for student service.

From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.;from New Orleans to the AppalachianMountains, Saint Joseph’s students embracethe Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area sen-ior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festivalfor the handicapped are two annual stu-dent-run events that draw thousands of spe-cial visitors to campus for fun and friend-ship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATIONSJU’s City Avenue location combines

the best of dynamic Philadelphia with thesuburban, residential setting of the elegantMain Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span twocounties, allowing students to literally enjoythe best of both worlds. The city ofPhiladelphia, with its tremendous wealth ofhistorical, cultural, social and athletic attrac-tions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campusare right at hand.

The friendly atmosphere and close-knitcampus ensure that students don’t get lostin either the literal or the figurative sense atSaint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computerand athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” tothis growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTSMen and women leave Saint Joseph’s

prepared. The University boasts an excellentrecord of placing its graduates in first-timejobs, professional schools and other

advanced degree programs. Part-time workand internships provide real-world experi-ences, the kind which delight future employ-ers. And with its many diverse studentorganizations, SJU offers ample opportuni-ties to assume leadership positions.

An extensive on-campus recruitmentprogram provides graduates with a headstart in their employment search. Regularmeetings with faculty advisors, along withadvisory programs in the health professionsand in pre-law, assist students who wish tofurther their schooling.

PHILADELPHIASJU’s Philadelphia location gives stu-

dents access to two worlds. The campusresembles a park, surrounded by the statelyhomes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Linesuburbs. Yet students have access to thecultural, commercial and recreational activi-ties of downtown Philadelphia -– only ashort ride away. SJU students take frequentadvantage of the artistic and culturalresources Philadelphia offers, as well. Theyvisit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; thePennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; theFranklin Institute Science Museum; theAcademy of Music, which houses ballet andopera; and the new Kimmel Center, home tothe Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJUstudents enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’steams in the four major professional sportsleagues.
