On December 1, 2010, Saint Francis University lost one of itsgreatest benefactors and friends. Father Bede Hines, T.O.R. passedaway at Saint Francis Friary at the age of 92, and will always be re-membered as one of Saint Francis’s most recognizable and loved indi-viduals.

Father Bede first came to serve on the faculty at Saint FrancisUniversity in 1947 before stints at Saint Francis Seminary and SaintThomas More High School. He returned to Loretto In 1955 andtaught there until his retirement in 1982. Along the way, Father Bedetouched the lives of countless students, faculty, and fellow clergymenwith his humility, grace, and good humor.

Those that knew him best also know that Father Bede was a pro-ponent of physical fitness throughout his entire life. Seeking to live hisfavorite motto of “Excelsior” (aim higher, or to strive for greater excel-lence), Father Bede was an avid runner, skier, cyclist, and swimmer. In2000, Father Bede earned three gold medals in the masters swim-ming division at the Keystone Games at the age of 82; in 1977, heclimbed Mount Whitney in California at the age of 79, the oldest per-son to achieve that feat. Despite being confined to a wheelchair late inlife, Father Bede could still be seen lifting weights and exercising.

One other group that has felt the indelible touch of Father Bede isthe Saint Francis track & field and cross country program, teams thatFather Bede coached for 34 years. For the entirety of his career, Fa-ther Bede’s teams never had a home track to call their own; he would

be seen taking the teams to practice at local high schools, perfectingtheir craft.

When DeGol Field was constructed early in the decade, and plansto build an all-weather track surrounding the field were announced, itwas agreed that the man who worked so tirelessly to build the track &field program at Saint Francis should be honored. On July 29, 2006,the Father Bede Hines Track was dedicated in a special ceremony, with Father Bede and a large gathering there to commemorate the oc-casion.

Father Bede Hines’ name will continue to live on at Saint FrancisUniversity not just in the track that bears his name, nor simply in theannual cross country and track and field events hosted by the track &field and cross country teams. No, Father Bede’s memory will live onand thrive in the example he set not just to his Fransiscan brothers, but the entire University community.

WordS For Father Bede

“Being a runner and a cross country/track & field coach - when ithink of Saint Francis university - i think of Father Bede and how heepitomized Saint Francis university, it's mission and ideals.”

- Debbie (White) Utesch, MBA Saint Francis ‘00Head Women’s Cross Country Coach - Lehigh

"don't say it; do it." one of my favorite quotes from my oldcoach/professor.

- Greg Heroux '78

“rest in peace Fr. Bede. My experiences of running track under hisguidance for just one year are among my most vivid and treasuredmemories of my years at Saint Francis.”

- Larry Woda '66

“heaven has a new track coach. i was fortunate to know Fr. Bede asa member of the SFc track club in the early seventies. although wewere only a club team, he entered us in some very prestigiousmeets. one time we competed at the pitt relays. he entered me inthe 35lb weight throw even though i had only thrown it a few times.i found myself competing against some of the best in the countrybut Fr. Bede just said, "do your best." he was a true inspiration.

- Joe Jacobi ‘74

“i believe all of his track and cross country runners loved the man.there is no need to exaggerate any Fr. Bede stories as they are alloriginal legends. Who could ever forget having to run backwards, orbeing called upon to recite a poem while following him across cam-pus?” - Bob Weet ‘66

Portions of this biography are taken from the obituary of Father BedeHines written by former University President Father Christian Oravec,T.O.R.

Father Bede Hines, T.O.R.“Basically, stay as close to God as fish are to water. Treat each person as you want tobe treated and accept your crosses as challenges, and remain dedicated to your ideals.”

-Father Bede Hines

Gordon Thomson enters his 23rd year as a head coach in 2010-11, his secondas the head coach of the Saint Francis Red Flash men’s and women’s cross countryand track & field teams. The veteran coach returns an experienced squad of athletesfor the upcoming seasons; all told, Thomson loses just seven women from the 2009-10 squad (four of whom competed in both cross country and track & field) and threemen (one of whom competed in both cross country and track & field).

In 2009, the Red Flash women’s cross country team took fourth in the NEC CrossCountry Championships, where a symbolic passing of the torch occurred when soph-omore Sarah Grossi earned her first career All-NEC honor by finishing 10th. At thesame time, decorated senior Anna Hoffman earned her fourth and final All-NEC honor, leaving Saint Francis as one of its finest cross country competitors.

Thomson’s women’s track & field squads took fifth in both the NEC Indoor and Out-door Track & Field championships on the strength of perhaps the best thrower in theconference. Christin Bridge continued her ascension in not just the conference but theNCAA by winning three individual conference championships (Indoor & Outdoor ShotPut, Discus). Bridge competed at the 2010 NCAA Championships - First Round inGreensboro, N.C. and is expected to compete near the top of the NEC again in 2010-11. Grossi would put her mark on the track & field season as well, winning her first in-dividual championship with a victory in the 3000m Steeplechase at the 2010 NECOutdoor Championships.

Thomson came to Loretto with extensive experience coaching on the national andinternational levels, after spending three seasons as an assistant coach with the Clem-son University men’s and women’s cross country and track & field programs. He hadspent the previous seven years as head coach of the DePaul men’s and women’s pro-grams, and 15 seasons as head coach at Loyola-Chicago.

“Gordon Thomson brings an outstanding background as a coach, teacher andleader in cross country and track & field,” Krimmel said. “Coach Thomson has made apositive impact on the students and universities he has served during his coaching ca-reer. Our student-athletes and staff are excited to welcome Gordon to the Saint Fran-cis family, and look forward to his dynamic leadership as our coach.”

While at Clemson, Thomson worked exclusively with the women’s distance pro-gram for his first two years. During his third season, he was in charge of coaching allphases of the Tiger cross country program for both the men and women.

Thomson coached both of Clemson’s cross country teams to Top-10 finishes atNCAA Southeast Regionals in 2008, while both teams earned All-Academic honors.Thomson also recruited and coached Jenna Baker to All-Atlantic Coast Conferenceand All-Region honors. She became the first Tiger runner to earn All-Region honorssince 1998.

Prior to becoming an assistant at Clemson, Thomson’s tenure at DePaul produced18 student-athletes who won Conference USA Championships, and four student-ath-letes who earned NCAA All-America honors. In 2002, he coached Erin Moffett to thefirst-ever women’s cross country All-America honor at DePaul. She went on to earn All-Region honors in 2001. Thomson also coached three-time All-American Carey Ryanin the men’s hammer throw. Ryan finished third at NCAA’s in the hammer throw.

During 15 seasons as head coach at Loyola-Chicago, Thomson was in charge ofboth the men’s and women’s programs. He was a 10-time Midwestern Collegiate Con-ference (now the Horizon League) Coach-of-the-Year, while his men’s distance athletesearned nine All-America awards. He coached the school’s first female All-American in1992 in the outdoor 10,000 meter run.

During his tenure at Loyola-Chicago, Thomson coached two members of the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in Eddie Slowikowskiand Jim Westphal. Slowikowski was a three-time NCAA All-American and broke the four-minute mark in the mile run. He was atwo-time Olympic Trials qualifier in the 1500m. Westphal was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2006 after a highly dec-orated career under Thomson’s guidance. He earned four All-America honors and holds seven school records. Westphal wenton to become a three-time member of the World Cross Country Championships team, and he was also a U.S. Olympic Trials qual-ifier in 1996.

Thomson coached Marc Burns, who was an All-American in 1989 and 1990 and holds school records in the 4x800m relay(indoor) and distance medley relay, 4x1500m relay, and 4x1600m relay (outdoor). Burns went on to coach the Loyola-Chicagoprogram and is now the head track & field and cross country coach at Bradley.

Prior to his head coach experience, Thomson served a total of three years as an assistant coach with the Northwestern Uni-versity and University of Florda women’s track and field programs.

In one season at Northwestern, he coached sprints, hurdles and throwing events, as well as sprints and relays for the Wild-cat football athletes. Several athletes scored at the Big Ten Championships.

Before joining Northwestern, Thomson oversaw recruiting and coaching for all distance events in two years at Florida. Heoversaw an NCAA-record performance in the 10,000m by Beth Farmer in 32 minutes, 49.1 seconds. Florida finished seventhat the 1981 AIAW Cross Country Championship. While coaching for the Gators, Thomson coached 1988 Olympian Shelly Steely, and present Villanova head coach Gina Proccacio.

Thomson has significant experience coaching with USA Track & Field. He spent one week in late July of 2009 in Chula Vista,Calif., where he was the lead instructor for the Emerging Elites Coaching Summit, sponsored by USA Track & Field, at the U.S.Olympic Training Center.

In July of 2004, he was a USA men’s assistant coach (distance events) at the IAAF World Junior Championships, in Gros-seto, Italy. In March 2006, he was the USA men’s assistant coach (distance events) at the IAAF World Indoor Championships inMoscow, Russia. From 1997-2005, Thomson served as USA Track and Field’s men’s Olympic Development Chairman for the3,000m steeplechase. He was then promoted to Olympic Development Chairman for all distance events from 2005 until step-ping down in 2009.

Additionally, Thomson was appointed as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2007 Pan American Junior Championships, which were held in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It was at those championships that Thomson displayed his coaching versatility. In oversee-ing the throwers, he coached four athletes to gold medal performances.

Thomson also served as President of the United States Cross Country Coaches Assocation from 1998-2000. He earneda bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Florida in 1982. He also obtained his master’s degree in Exercise and Sports Sci-ences from Florida in 1987. Thomson wrote his thesis on “Hurdling versus Stepping the Steeplechase Waterjump.” He residesin nearby Ebensburg.

Ruff is set to enter his second season as an assistant coach with the Red Flashcross country and track & field teams, bringing passion and leadership to the Red Flashsquad. Ruff’s diverse array of knowledge has allowed him to work equally well with ath-letes competing in distance, long sprints, and jumps.

Under Ruff, Chris Behre added two more NEC championships to the mantle, takinghome wins in the 1500m and the Mile. Throws coach Tamara Burns is currently in her third season with the Red Flash, ar-

riving in Loretto upon completing a stellar four-year career at Virginia Tech. Despite her

short tenure thus far at Saint Francis, Burns’s athletes have been perhaps the top per-

formers the Red Flash have put out in the field over the last several seasons. Under

burns, Christin Bridge has won five individual Northeast Conference championships, in-

cluding two straight outdoor Shot Put and Discus titles; she is the only Red Flash woman

since 1999 to win consecutive championships in two separate events.

Burns coached shot putter Lisa Morse to a first-place finish at the 2008 Indoor

Championship and Kayla Herron to a win in the weight throw at the same event. More

recently, she guided Karl DeWayngaert to victory in the weight throw, helping the men’s

team win the 2009 Northeast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship. In two

years, Burns has led field athletes to 47 top-ten finishes at the NEC Championships.

While competing for the Hokies, Burns earned both All-American and All-Atlantic

Coast Conference Honors for her performances in the weight and hammer throws in

2005 and 2006. In 2006, she claimed the weight throw title at the ACC Indoor Cham-

pionships and went on to win the hammer throw at the 2007 ACC Outdoor champi-

onships. Burns’ performances helped the Hokies to capture the 2007 Indoor and

Outdoor ACC Championships.

The 2010 Saint Francis men’s crosscountry team entered the season with aconsiderable amount of attention, as theveteran-laden squad was picked to finishsecond in the conference in the preseasonand received a pair of first-place votes inthe process. Facing a challenging pre-championship schedule that included tripsto Chicago and Delaware, the Red Flashmen hoped to live up to the hype.

The result was a second place finishat the 2010 NEC Championship, wherethe Flash finished behind just the host in-stitution Central Connecticut State BlueDevils. While disappointed that his teamwas not able to bring home the gold, SaintFrancis head coach Gordon Thomson saidhis team’s performance was still com-mendable, recording their highest placingsince the 2005 season.

“"They should be proud of themselves,"said Thomson. "They ran to win a teamchampionship. As a whole, this is a bigstep forward for the University. It showsour team is heading in the right direction."

Making his final appearance in aNortheast Conference championship wassenior tim Wertner, who earned his thirdconsecutive All-NEC honor by taking sev-enth overall at the meet. Directly behindWertner was chris Mills, who finished onespot out of All-NEC consideration in 2009but jumped out to eighth overall in 2010.Mills, a three-time Northeast Conferencechampion in the distance events in Out-door Track & Field, finally broke through in

cross country and willbe one of Thomson’stop harriers in 2011.

New to the partyfor the Flash were apair of sophomores;Shaun Foley andSean kirby were thethird and fourth All-NEC runners for theFlash in 2010, givingSaint Francis its mostAl l -NEC select ionssince their 2005 con-ference champi-onships. Foley madewhat was describedas a “quantum leap”by Thomson, andKirby’s successcomes on the heels of a surprise second-place finish in the 3000m Steeplechase atthe 2010 NEC Outdoor Track & Fieldchampionships.

While the Red Flash took second atthe meet, they still managed to bring homesome additional hardware from NewBritain. Freshman chris Fischer, a two-time NEC Rookie of the Week over thecourse of the season, finished 16th overalland earned NEC Freshman of the Year asthe top first-year finisher at the meet.

Beyond just the 2010 NEC champi-onships, the season saw the Red Flashearn numerous accolades as both a teamand as individuals. After competing at thenationally renowned Sean Earl Lakefront In-vitational (hosted by Loyola-Chicago, whereThomson spent the first 15 years of hishead coaching career), the Flash crackedthe United States Track & Field and CrossCountry Coaches’ Association (USTFC-CCA) Mid-Atlantic Regional rankings at#15. Saint Francis defeated severalteams that week that were included in theUSTFCCCA’s Midwest Regional rankings.

Two weeks later, the Flash jumped upto #13 in the region on the heels of astrong performance at the Delaware Blue& Gold Meet; Saint Francis came in sec-ond to just the hosting Delaware BlueHens, who ranked 11th in the Mid-AtlanticRegion. Finally, after their second placeperformance at the NEC Championships, the Flash ended up #11th in the region.

From an individual standpoint, SaintFrancis featured the most accolades for

any team in theNortheast Confer-ence. The Red Flashcombined for fiveNEC Athlete orRookie of the Weekawards, somethingthat no other schoolcould match. All told, the Flash earnedthree Rookie awards, two for Chris Fischerand one for Jakeportock, and Athleteof the Week awardsfor both Chris Millsand Tim Wertner.

With 2010 inthe rearview mirror,Thomson and the

Red Flash will now set their sights on the2010-11 track & field season, but notwithout keeping their sights on the 2011cross country season. Featuring seniorslike Mills, kyle gibson, adam Mengel, andZach Burns, the Red Flash hope that theveterans of the squad will combine withthe improved youth to bring the Red andWhite back to the top of the podium in theNortheast Conference.

Saint Francis men’s track & fieldcoach Gordon Thomson enters the 2010-11 track and field seasons with the hopethat an experienced crop of upperclass-men can mentor his talented newcomersand help the Red Flash return to the top ofthe Northeast Conference.

“We brought in five men this seasonthat can help us right away in the distanceand sprints events,” said Thomson. “In ad-dition [head football coach] Chris Villarrialis very pro-track and field. We hope topartner with him to bring in well-roundedathletes that wish to compete in both foot-ball and track & field.”

DisTAnCe

The most experienced third of the ros-ter is the distance corps, which returns itsentire squad from the 2009-10 season. Agroup heavy with upperclassmen, Thom-son will turn to a pair of multiple-timeNortheast Conference champions as hisdistance horses for the season. Graduatestudent chris Behre and junior chris Millshave a combined nine NEC individual titlesbetween the two of them, and will be chal-lengers for more in both middle- and long-distance events, respectively.

“Behre’s maturitylevel is very high; he gothis bachelor’s degree injust three years and willhave his master’s degreeby season’s end,” saidThomson. “With his ma-turity and experience,we’re looking for him tostep up and perform well, all the way to the IC4A’sand NCAA First Round.”

Thomson said thatMills is a true “trackracer,” with an innate abil-ity to set his pace andmaintain rhythm over aflat surface that makeshim difficult to beat in longraces.

“Mills did a marvelous job improving incross country this past season, gettingused to uphills, downhills, turns, and otherthings that break rhythm,” said Thomson.

“That will only help his track career. Heloves a flat, even surface and really thriveson it.”

According to Thomson, other return-ing runners to watch include Sean kirby, who as a freshman in 2009-10 took sec-ond in the NEC in the 3000m Steeple-chase; tim Wertner, a senior who is amultiple-time All-NECperformer in crosscountry and whomThomson feels is anathlete “most capableof translating that totrack success;” ShaunFoley, whom Thomsonsaid “made a quantumleap” in cross countrycompetition in 2010;kyle gibson, whoscored at the 2010NEC Outdoor Champi-onships in the 1500mand “has range fromthe Mile on up,” ac-cording to Thomson;and Brent digiorgio, who scored at the2009-10 NEC IndoorChampionships in the unseeded heat ofthe 3000m.

Two freshman expected to make animmediate impact arechris Fischer and nickgibson (brother of Kyle).Fischer earned NECRookie of the Year statusin the 2010 cross coun-try season, and Nick Gib-son expects to step rightin as one of the RedFlash’s dangerous mid-distance runners.

sPRinTs

The sprint squad will bedominated in 2010-11by youth, as no seniorcompetitors remainafter the graduation ofconverted jumper WillVelez in 2010. Thomson

will rely heavily on junior everette Farmerand sophomore issa connell to improvethis season to give the Red Flash a boostin the sprints.

“Those two men have been our breadand butter on the short sprints and re-lays,” said Thomson. “They’ve come intothis season with a great sense of workethic that is going to pay off.”

Connell is a naturally-gifter tall sprinterthat holds the sixth-best performance inschool history in the 100m with an 11.00

in 2010, as well asthe sixth-best per-formance in schoolhistory in the 60mwith a 7.07.Farmer was besetby injuries late inthe 2010 outdoorseason, but re-mained a key mem-ber of the shortsprint relays.

In terms offreshman, Thom-son hopes that fournewcomers will beable to step up andbecome productivequickly. In particu-lar, daniel droz-dowsky scored at

the Ontario Federation of School AthleticAssociations (OFSAA) meet in the 400m,and cedric Forbes qualified for the NewYork state championship meet in the hur-dles as a student at Corning H.S. Thom-son also indicated that Matt giza andlogan Zimmerman would be in the mix inthe sprints.

FielD

The returning crop in the field will bevery thin for the Red Flash, with just localproduct terry Bookhamer as a returningscorer. Bookhamer scored in the WeightThrow at the 2009-10 NEC Indoor Cham-pionships and just missed out on scoringin the Hammer Throw at the 2010 NECOutdoor Championships.

“Terry has been training well in the off-season, and we expect him to improve inthe coming seasons,” said Thomson.

Thomson also hopes that severalmembers of the Saint Francis footballteam will be able to step in and providedepth in the throws.

T h e n o r t h e a s t C o n f e r e n c e

When the Northeast Conference (NEC) was first

established as the ECAC-Metro Conference

back in 1981, the league’s founders had one

goal in mind: to create a competitive NCAA Division I

men’s basketball conference for unaffiliated schools on

the Eastern seaboard. A single-sport entity at its

inception, the NEC has grown far beyond expectations

over the past three decades, having transformed itself

into a burgeoning 12-member, 23-sport conference. To

mark the NEC’s 30th Anniversary season in 2010-11, the

Conference will proudly celebrate its heritage as its builds

toward a promising future.

The NEC and its member institutions are committed to

providing opportunities for student-athletes to achieve

their fullest potential both in athletic competition and in

the classroom. Likewise, the Conference continually

strives to be an NCAA Division I leader for athletic

success, academic achievement and integrity,

sportsmanship, equity and diversity, community

partnership and national engagement.

The remarkable success story of the conference began

to unfold in 1985, when the league began sponsoring

additional sports. Three years later, a change of name

was in order and the Northeast Conference as we know

it today was born. With membership and sport sponsorship

continuing to grow over the next 25 years, the NEC now

enjoys qualification or play-in access to 14 different NCAA

Championships (baseball, men’s and women’s basketball,

field hockey, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s

lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and

women’s tennis and women’s volleyball).

Though the NEC has featured various incarnations since

its inception, charter members Fairleigh Dickinson, Long

Island, Robert Morris, St. Francis (NY), Saint Francis (PA)

and Wagner remain part of the current 12-school

alignment. They are joined by Monmouth (admitted in

1985), Mount St. Mary’s (1989), Central Connecticut

State (1997), Quinnipiac (1998) and Sacred Heart

(1999). NEC expansion continues with the addition of

Bryant University in 2012 as the league’s 12th member,

which will give the league a six-state geographic footprint

with access to such major media markets as New York

City, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Hartford and Providence.

NEC member institutions now compete in 23 championship

sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s

bowling, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey,

football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s

indoor track and field, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s

and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s

soccer, softball, women’s swimming, men’s and women’s

tennis, and women’s volleyball.

A.J. Suravicz (above) is one of only six All-Americans

in Saint Francis athletics history; coincidentally, three

of those six men (Suravicz, Ryan Sheehan, and Brian

Sell) competed on the track & field team. However,

Sell was an All-American in cross country, not track

& field.

Give a Gift, Build a Legacy...Alumni, parents, friends, students, faculty and staff are among those whohave generously supported the Saint Francis University Stokes Club.

The Stokes club is an organization which provides assistance and support to student-athletes participating in our 21-sport Division I Athletics Program. Our student-athletes and coaches work hard to represent Saint Francis University, and you, in a positive manner year-round.

With your recent contributions, Saint Francis Athletics has enjoyed improvements at DeGol Field, which also includes Fr. Bede Hines Track, and the Stokes Softball Field. Contributions have also helped to improvedevery day working conditions within the athletic department.

We are extremely proud of our past athletic and academic accomplishments. However, with your help we can move forward andtake our programs to even greater success in the classroom, in the community and in our competition. The future of Red Flash Athleticsis very bright because you care about our student-athletes.
