Carl Hatfield1967-68Hatfield is rec-ognized as the premier harrier in the history of West Virginia cross country.

A qualifier for the NCAA champi-onships in each of his three varsity seasons, Hatfield was West Virginia’s first cross country All-American. As a junior, he finished 20th at the NCAA meet in Cheyenne, Wyo., to earn his first All-America honor. The following year, he placed 10th, covering the NCAA course in Man-hattan in 29:59.0 to earn his second All-America honor. Hatfield also enjoyed a stellar track career, as he won several Eastern and Southern Conference titles during his time in Morgantown.

Don Sauer1972After a consistent four-year run, Sauer earned his only trip to the NCAA Champi-onships in 1972

in Houston to close out his career. In a story book ending, Sauer passed two runners over the final 100

yards to finish 25th, thus earning All-America honors. His time was 29:26.0.

Alex Kasich1973-75After finishing 153rd in his first NCAA appear-ance the year before, Kasich rebounded

to earn a 16th-place finish and All-America laurels. He finished the Penn State course in a time of 29:14.6. As a junior in 1974, he became the first WVU harrier to go undefeated throughout the regular season, outlegging the field in eight races.

Wynston Alberts1992Competing in his first-ever NCAA meet, the Roseburg, Ore., native registered All-America hon-

ors by finishing the Bloomington, Ind., course in a time of 31:57.3. The junior finished 39th overall, but earned All-America status as he was one of the top 25 American-born runners to cross the finish line.

Bob Donker1993In 1993, Donker capped his spec-tacular career by earning All-Amer-ica honors at the NCAA meet at

Lehigh. The Georgetown, Ontario, native finished the Bethlehem, Pa., course in a time of 30:27.3 to finish 24th. In addition to his All-America honor, he won three consecutive individual Atlantic 10 cross country titles during his stay in Morgantown and led WVU to two team titles. He also excelled in track, capturing two All-America honors in 1994 by finishing seventh indoors and fifth outdoors in the 5,000 meters. Also in his career, he was the Penn Relays 5,000 meter champion.

Mike Dudley1994West Virginia’s sixth cross coun-try All-American, Mike Dudley was the 19th runner to finish the 1994

NCAA cross country championships held at Arkansas. As a junior, the Bremerton, Wash., native covered the Prairie Grove Battlefield State

Park Course in a time of 30:54.9. Dudley was also the 1994 Atlantic 10 individual champion and qualified for the 1995 NCAA cross country championships. Dudley was a member of the U.S. national team, competing at the World University Teams.

Steve Bohan2000Bohan received the honor with his performance at the 2000 NCAA Cham-pionships. The

senior finished 18th overall with a time of 30:51. He ended his career as a three-time NCAA cross country qualifier, IC4A Indoor 3,000 meter champion in 1999 and the Penn Re-lays 10,000 meter champion in 2000 and winner of WVU’s Red Brown Cup, signifying the school’s top athlete. The Toronto, Ontario, native was the last All-American for long-time WVU coach Martin Pushkin. He was also selected to compete at the world track and field championships making him the only distance runner out of the NCAA to be selected for this competition.

MEN’S TRACKAll-AmericansJack Carter1966 Attained All-America sta-tus as a junior in the pole vault by placing second with a vault of

15’8” at the 1966 NCAA indoor championships in Detroit. Carter was tutored by WVU graduate and pole vault world record holder Dave Tork during his collegiate career. A two-time Southern Con-ference champion, Carter nursed a strained hamstring his senior sea-son and missed the NCAA meet.

Mike Mosser1970-71-72 Although he only took up the sport of distance running as a high school senior, Mike

Mosser developed into one of the nation’s premier collegiate runners as his four All-America honors sug-gest. As a sophomore, he placed sixth in the mile at the NCAA outdoor meet in a time of 4:03.5. As a junior, Mosser was third in the NCAA indoor 1,000 yards (2:08.7) and finished fourth in the outdoor mile that year. In 1972, the senior won the 1,000-yard national title at the NCAA indoor meet in Detroit, clocking a time of 2:08.9, West Virginia’s first and only male track and field national champion.

Garnet Edwards1979 One of the fastest men in America, Garnet Edwards at-tained All-Ameri-ca status in 1979

at the NCAA indoor championships in Detroit. Finishing second in the 60-yard high hurdles, the junior clocked a blistering 7.9 in the

event. Twice placing seventh in the 110 high hurdles at the NCAA out-door meet, the versatile Edwards held records in seven events and also played football at WVU.

Jean-Pierre Nday-isenga1985-86 Jean-Pierre Ndayisenga earned his first All-America award as a

sophomore by placing sixth in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA outdoor championships at Texas, running the distance in a time of 14:08.0. In 1986, the Belgian native finished third in the 3,000 meters at the NCAA indoor finals at Oklahoma City, posting a time of 7:56.73. He also won an Eastern (1986) and two Atlantic 10 cross country titles (1985-86) during his career at West Virginia before transferring to George Mason.

James Jett1990-91-92 During his three years at WVU, James Jett established himself as one of the most

prolific performers in WVU track history, earning seven All-America honors during his three seasons of competition. As a freshman, he finished fifth in the NCAA indoor championships in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.24. As a sophomore, he earned All-America accolades in the indoor 200-me-ters, as well as in the outdoor 100- and 200-meter dashes. In 1992, the Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., native earned three additional All-America honors. He finished third in the 200-meter dash at the indoor meet and ended the season by recording second-place finishes in the outdoor 100- and 200-meter

races. During the summer of 1992, he earned a berth on the United States Olympic team and won a gold medal as an alternate on the 4x100 relay squad. He spent ten seasons as a wide receiver for the Oakland Raiders. In 1996, he won the NFL Fastest Man competition and was a finalist in 1997. Jett was elected in the WVU Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.

Bob Donker1994-95 The George-town, Ontario native became the first three-time, single-sea-son All-Amer-

ican in WVU history by earning All-America honors in cross coun-try, indoor and outdoor track in 1993-94. He attained All-America status in the 5,000-meter run by placing seventh at the 1994 NCAA indoor championships in Indianapolis and placed fifth in the 5,000-meter run at the 1994 NCAA outdoor championships in Boise, Idaho. He secured his fourth All-America citation by placing sixth at the 1995 indoor NCAA championships at Indianapolis, Ind. In addition to his All-America honors, he captured first place at the Penn Relays to become WVU’s first male winner in 100 years. He also excelled in cross country, cap-turing All-America honors in 1993 and was a three-time Atlantic 10 cross country champion. Donker is one of only four Mountaineers to earn All-America honors in two sports.

Rich Wagner1995 Rich Wagner was the eighth-best U.S. finisher in the 200-meter dash at the 1995 NCAA indoor

championships at Indianapolis to capture All-America status. Finishing ninth overall with a time of 21.37, the Copiague, N.Y., native was making his second NCAA in-door appearance as a senior after qualifying for the indoor champion-ships in 1993.

Juan Jones1995 A football crossover, the Elizabeth, N.J., native captured All-America honors in the

100-meter dash at the 1995 NCAA outdoor championships Knoxville. Performing in his only NCAA meet, the senior earned All-America recognition by recording the fifth-best U.S. time in the event with a 10.29 clocking. Like Wagner, Jones finished the event ninth overall.

Mark Vilardo1996 Mark Vilardo earned All-Amer-ica honors in the 5,000 meters at the 1996 NCAA indoor champi-

onships at Indianapolis. In his only NCAA appearance, the Bloom-ington, Ind., native was the fifth American to cross the finish line. He took 10th overall with a time of 14:20.47. Vilardo also won Atlantic 10 titles in 1995 in the 3,000m and the distance medley relay. A multiple BIG EAST award winner, Vilardo won a silver medal at IC4A championships in the 5,000m in 1995. He also was awarded All-At-lantic 10 honors for cross country after finishing second in the 1995 championships.
