Anchoredonceagainby itspowerhousedistanceandmid-dle-distance components, the2009-10WilliamandMary trackandfieldprogramlookstohaveabanneryearandsetprogramrecordsforbestfinishesatthenationallevelinallthreecompe-titionseasons.Tocomplementtheteam’sfourreturningNCAAqualifiers,headmen’scoachAlex Gibby ’97anddirectoroftrackandfieldDan Stimsonhaveaddedverystrongrecruitingclasstotryandsweep theColonialAthleticAssociationchampionshipsforthefirsttimesince2004.

Sprints/Hurdles Thisoff-seasonprovedveryproductiveforboththeathletesandcoachesofthesprintsandhurdlesgroup,withnearlyeverycontributorfromlastseasonreturninginevenbettershapeandthecoachesgrowingbothinnumberandexpertise.Theschool-recordholderinthedecathlon,Todd Doughty ’97,wasalsoanoutstandingsprinterandhurdlerduringhis fouryearsandre-turnstohelpEmil Davis ’85(aschool-recordholderhimself)andDave Fritz(newlycertifiedasaLevelIIsprintsandrelayscoach)restoretheCollege’sfortuneintheshorterdistancetothelevelofits1960sand70sheyday. JuniorChris McIntoshisthetop400mhurdlerofthepastseveral years forW&M, and justmissed all-conference honorsthe last twoyears in thatevent. Alsocurrently the team’s topopen400mand200mrunner,McIntoshcouldchallengeforAll-East honors on the indoorDMR andwill be a key part of the4x100mand4x400mrelayefforts.ClassmateDavid Blitzer isapowerfulrunner,andwillbelookingtocontributeinthelong-sprints(400mandup)aswellaschallengeforIC4Aqualificationsat500mindoors. SophomoreMatt Clarksetthefreshmanrecordinthe60mhurdlesindoorslastwinter,andalsoscoredinthe110mhurdlesat theconferencemeetoutdoors. Withanotheryearunderhisbelt,thecoachingstaffexpectshimtobeginchallengingforall-conference honors, and to also contribute in the short sprintsasneeded.Todd Saundersistheonlynewmemberofsquadinthesprintingevents,butcomesintoW&MwithtimesthatwouldrankhiminorneartheCollege’sall-timetop-10.Hewasare-gion-qualifier inboththe100mand200matWestfieldHigh inNewJersey,andhasrun10.9and22.5inthoseevents.Inaddi-tiontotheshortsprints,thecoacheswillalsotrySaundersinthe400mopenandaspartofboththe4x100mand4x400mrelays.

Middle-Distance EvenwiththelossofAll-AmericanmilerIanFitzgerald ’09,theTribemiddle-distanceplatoonprojectstohaveanevenbetterseasonin2010thanitdidlastyear.SeniorHarry Millerisfullyrecoveredfrominjuriesthatrobbedhimofmuchoflastspring,andwillbecountedontogetbackintohis8:49steeplechaseformandchallengetheschoolrecordthathasstoodfor30years. SophomorePeter Dorrell is also stalking the steeplechaserecord,afterjustmissingAll-Easthonorsandthefreshmanre-cordwhenhetimed9:03.85inhisfinalracelastspring.TheCAARookieoftheYearincrosscountrylastfall,DorrellisaprovennationalcompetitorandwillbefightingtoretainhisspotontheTribe’sNCAAChampionshipteam.ClassmateLiam Anastasia-Murphywasa9:19steeplerinhisfirstyear,andhasalsoprovedanintegralpartoftheCollege’s4x800mandDMRteams,earningAll-Eastrelayhonorsoutdoorsandqualifyingforthe800mand1,000mindoors. Junior Brian Sklodowski has perhaps the greatest rangeon the team, earning All-East honors in all three seasons lastyear andmaking the NCAARegional at 1,500m. He also hasthe strength tomove up to the 3,000m and 5,000m, running14:16.76inthelatterraceatthePennRelays,andwillbecountedontohelpthecrosscountryteamextenditsstreakofconsecutiveNCAAappearances.Jay BilsborrowalsoqualifiedfortheIC4AChampionships outdoors in the 1,500mwith a 3:49.79 show-ingatGeorgeMason,andindoorsinthemilethatisthird-bestamongall returningathletes. Hewasalsopartof theAll-East4x800mrelay,andhasthetop800mpersonal-bestcurrentlyontheteam. JuniorSean Mahoneywasprimarilyamileruntillastsea-son,butexperiencedgreatsuccessmovingdowntothe800mand1,000m.Indoors,hequalifiedfortheIC4AChampionshipsinthe1,000m,andranattheoutdoormeetaspartofthepreliminary-round4x800mrelay.Thisyear,hewillbecountedontomakeascoringimpactbothattheconferenceandIC4Ameets.Sopho-moreChris Tysonhastremendousupsideinseveralevents,andcould challenge the school records in every event from 500m-1000mbeforetheyearisout.Asaredshirt-freshman,heearnedall-conferenceandAll-Eastaccoladesincrosscountryandwasrunner-up at 1,500m at the CAA Championships. FreshmanDan Grimmwasanall-stateathleteinVirginia’stopclassifica-tion,andisexpectedtoimmediatelychallengeforaspotonthe4x800mrelaywhilealsocontributingat800mand1,000m.

Colin LeakranksaveryclosethirdbehindGreyandMassamat10,000m,andhadabreakthroughraceinthe5,000matlastyear’sIC4Achampionshipstofinishsixthin14:06.92.AmemberofeachofthepastthreeNCAAcrosscountryteamsforW&M,hewillbecountedonto improve lastyear’s94th-placefinishandboost theTribe into the top-10 teams. Charlie Swartz isalsoexpectedtobeasignificantcontributorbothincrosscountryandforthedistanceracesintrack,andwillbelookingtomaketheNCAAteamthisyearafterhelpingtheteamclinchtheregiontitlelastfall.Lewis Woodardhadoneofthebiggestbreakthroughsontheteamlastyear,shakingtheinjurybugmid-falltobecomeanall-conferenceandall-regionrunnerandrunattheNCAACham-pionships.Duringthewinterheran4:08inthemileforAll-Easthonors,andjustmissedtheNCAARegionalmeetat5,000maftertiming14:17.14atthePennRelays.Thisfall,hewillbelookingforatop-80finishattheNCAAChampionships,andtoqualifytobothnationaltrackmeets. Christo Landry will return for his sixth year and second

graduatedegreethisyear,ashefinishesouthiseligibilityforbothindoor and outdoor track. A three-time All-American in crosscountry,Landrywilllookforhisfirstnationalawardsonthetrackthisseasonafterbeinglimitedbyinjuriesforthepasttwoyears.Tom BurkewastheconferenceRookieoftheYearincrosscoun-trytwoyearsago,andranfortheTribeattheNCAAChampion-shipsin2008beforeredshirtingthespring.Hewillbeexpectedtocontributeat theregionalandnational levelsagainthis fall,aswellasimprovinghistracktimestoNCAARegional-qualifyinglevels. AlsoreturningasAll-EastperformersisthetrioofDrew Mid-land,Skeeter Morris,andZach Gates. Midlandisatwo-timeAll-EastrunnerincrosscountryandalsoqualifiedfortheIC4AChampionships inthe3,000min2008,running8:20.99. Thisyear,hewillbeexpectedtobealeaderoftheteam’smiddlepackwhilechallenging forrosterspots intheuppertier. GatesandMorriseachbrokeoutlastspringat10,000m,finishingsixthandeighth,respectively,attheIC4AChampionships.Emphasisthisyearforbothmenwillbetochallengefortop-tierbillingincrosscountry,while also gettingunder the 30-minute barrier in the10,000mduringthespring. Providing depth throughout the distance events will be astrong crop of upperclassmen, including Pete Asaro, Robert Sagar,Max Werner,Glen Wright Colopy, andPaul Norland.Asaro andSagar are each experienced steeplechasers and canalsoperformatahighlevelinthe5,000mandincrosscountry,whereAsarowasanall-conferencehonoreeasafreshman.Wer-nerisatwo-timeIC4Aqualifierat10,000m,andwillbeexpectedtochallengeforAll-Eastaccoladesbothintrackandcrosscoun-try.NorlandandWrightColopyhavebothcompetedfortheTribeattheCAAChampionshipsintrack,andwillbelookingtomakethe stepup to scoringandchallenging forall-conferenceacco-lades. Also providing depth and with potential to blossom veryquicklyintoregional-scorersaresecond-yearmenDavid Adley,Alex McGrath,andJohn Pence.AdleywastheCAArunner-upat10,000minthespringandqualifiedfortheIC4AChampion-ships in that event,whileMcGrathandPence each ran in themid-8:30sfor3,000mindoors. Thomas Baker ran for Louisa CountyHS in Virginia, earning 11 all-state accolades and leading theLionstothe2009stateindoortitle.Griff Ashoohwas12thattheVirginiaAAAcross country championships last fall forCo-lonialForge,earninghonorablementionAll-MetaccoladesfromtheWashington Post.Josh Hardinwasthebronze-medallistattheNXNSoutheastRegionallastfall,qualifyingforthenationalchampionshipmeetincrosscountry.Alsoa9:11-3,200mrun-ner,Hardinwonsixall-stateawardsandwasafirst-teamAll-MetselectionbytheWashington Post.

Jumps The vaulters under coach Dave Fritz will again be a solidpart of theTribe line-up,but the graduationof IC4AandCAAchampionCamShriver ’09 inthehigh jumpleavesaholethattheteamhopeswillbefilledbyaheraldednewcomer. SeniorsDoug ZimmerandKiernan Loflandaretheelderstatesmenofthepolevaultcorps,andbothwillbeexpectedtopostsignificantgainsinheightastheTribelookstoregaintheconferencetitle.LoflandhasalreadyproventhathecanjumpwiththebestintheCAA,withrunner-upfinisheseachtimehehasbeenahealthycompetitor, andhas a career-best of 16-0.75 set as freshman.Healthyagain,hewilllooktochallengefortitlesbothindoorsandoutdoorsattheIC4Ameet.Zimmerisinonlyhissecondseasonasafull-fledgedjumper,andaftershowinggreatprogressinoneyearisalsoexpectedtobeinthemixattheconferenceandIC4AChampionships. JuniorKeith Constancewillalsobelookingtocontinuehisimprovementoverthepastyearafterincreasinghispersonal-bestby16 inches in2008-09. Withcontinuedprogress,Constancewillbeon thecuspof IC4A-qualifying thisspring. SophomoreDaniel IngetransferredfromClemsonoverthesummerafterfin-ishinginthetop-10attheACCindoormeet,andwillbeexpectedtochallengerightawayfortheconferencetitle.Asahigh-schoolvaulterinVirginia,IngewasaprepAll-Americanandcleared16-4.75,thesecond-bestmarkinstatehistory. FreshmanBen Katzroundsoutthejumpinggroup,withaprep-bestmarkof6-8.5inthehighjump.Thateffortwonhimthe VIS state outdoor title and the championship-meet recordin theevent,andwouldqualifyinghim for the IC4Ameet ifhematchesitthisseason.Alsoatalentedhorizontal-jumper,Katzhasmarksof22-9.75inthelongjumpand44-1inthetriple.

Throws CoachStimsonhasthebenefitofbothdepthandexperienceinthethrowingeventsthisseason,withfourupper-andtwoun-derclassmenontheroster.SophomoreBrandon Hérouxisthemostaccomplishedofthegroup,earningAll-Eastandall-regionhonorsinthejavelinthrowandplacing19thattheNCAACham-pionships. He demolished the school and conference recordswith his throw of 227-5 towin theCAA title, andwas namedRookieoftheYearintheconferenceashiseffortprovedtobethethird-bestamongAmericanjuniorslastyear. TheweightswillfeaturethereturnofjuniorZach Jordaninthehammer,ashelookstocontinuehisprogressionintothetoptieroftheCAAandIC4AandtrytoqualifyfortheNCAARegional.Indoors,Jordanwillbe looking foranIC4Aqualification intheweightthrow.SeniorAdam Gawnewillalsoconcentrateonthoseevents,andwilllookforsignificantimprovementsindistanceaf-teradifficult2009campaign. Senior Alex Ball scored in all three weight-events at lastyear’sCAAChampionships,andwillhaveagoatall-conferencehonors thisseasonashe tries toearna top-fourplacing inallthreeevents.Dan Klatzkinhasfullyrecoveredfromtheanklein-juryhesufferedmid-meetattheconferencechampionshipslastspring,andwillbeexpectedtothrowconsistentlyabove50-feetintheshotputand150-feetinthediscus.Joiningtheteamthisyear isTodd Repass,whowasanall-stateshot-putteratStaf-fordhighschoollastwinter.Repasshasthrown149feetinthediscus, and 51-6with the 12-lbs shot put, and is expected toconcentrateinthosetwodisciplinesthisseason.

Multi SophomoreRoman Dentistheonlymulti-eventathletelist-edon theTribe roster in2009-10,buthisprepcredentials in-dicatethathecouldverywellrevivethelegacyofcoachesDavisandDoughty,bothofwhomfigure tobedeeply involved inhistrainingthisseason.Dentcompetedonlyonceindoorsandsatoutthespringseasonasafreshman,buthashighschoolmarksof22-1inthelongjumpand14.83inthe110mhurdlesandwasafive-timestatechampioninTennessee.Healsolookstobeasignificanthelpinthehorizontaljumps,withabestmarkof47-11.75inthetriplejump.

AlexGibbyhasspent14yearsofhislifehelpingtobuildWilliamandMaryintooneofthenation’sfewgreattrackandfieldprograms,includingthelastsixastheheadmen’scoach.Asthe2009-10schoolyearbegins,hisrecruitingandcoachingeffortshavetheTribepoisedtochallengefortitlesatthehighestlevelsofthesport,whilealsoupholdingtheCollege’sfinesttraditionsofacademicex-cellence. Sincebeginninghistenureastheheadcoachinthesummerof2003,Gibby’schargeshavewonallsixColonialAthleticAssociationcrosscountrytitlesaswellasthe2004trackchampionship,andaddedteamtitlesincrosscountryfromtheIC4A(2006)andtheNCAASoutheastRegional (2005and2008). Individually,athleteswearingtheGreenandGoldhavecollected40CAAandIC4Atitles,fiveAll-Americaawards,andbeennamedaCAAScholar-AthleteoftheYearforei-thercrosscountryortrack10times. OneofGibby’sgreateststrengthsisgettinghisathletestoachievebeyondtheirperceivedlimits,bothineventsinwhichtheyarefamilierandinbrand-newendeavors.Intotal,sevenoftheCAA’s12RookiesoftheYearoverthepastsixyearshavecomefromW&M,includingfourofsixincrosscountry.KeithBechtolwasaCAAandIC4AChampionasafreshmaninGibby’sfirstseason,andwentontoplace14that theNCAA10,000mChampionshipsasaseniorandqualifyfor the2008OlympicTrials. During the2009outdoor season, six athletes ranfasterthanthe14:12neededtoqualifyfortheNCAARegionalat5,000m,atotalmatchedonlybyOklahomaState. Gibby’s first full class of recruits included three-time cross country All-American Christo Landry and 2009 indoor mile All-American Ian Fitzgerald.Landry became the Tribe’s first freshman All-American since the early 1970swhen he took 38th at the 2004 NCAA Championships, and qualified for the5,000moutdoorseachofhisfirsttwoseasonsintrack--in2004-05,hebecamejustthesecondathleteinCAAhistorytobenamedRookieoftheYearinbothcrosscountryandtrack.In2007,hisfinalcrosscountryseason,LandrywontheCAAindividualtitle,placed13thattheNCAAChampionships,andwasnamedboth

AthleteoftheYearandScholar-AthleteoftheYearintheconference. FitzgeraldcametoWilliamandMaryasa4:09milerand8:22runneratthe3,000mfromPennsylvania.OverthecourseofhisfiveyearsattheCollege,heloweredhisbestto4:00.01inthemileand13:55.19inthe5,000m,andwasatwo-timeNCAAparticipantinthe5,000moutdoors.Asaseniorin2009,his4:00.01in-doormileearnedhimaninvitationtotheNCAAChampionshipswherebecamethefirstindoorAll-AmericanforW&MsinceMattLanein2001. The3,000msteeplechasehasalsoseenaresurgenceinthepastsixyearsasoneofWilliamandMary’ssignatureevents. WithonlythestateofNewYorkrunning theeventat thehighschoolstatechampionships,GibbyhasachievedremarkablesuccesstrainingathleteswithlittleornoexperienceintheeventtobecomeRegionalqualifiersandconferencechampions.From1984to2004,onlytwoTribeathletesbrokethenine-minutebarrierintheevent,butsince2005thestandardhasbeenbreachedbyfourrunners.HarryMiller(Oregon)hadacareer-bestof9:05.83ashetoedthe lineat the2008PennRelays,amarkhesmashedwithan8:49.09performance that ranked13th in theNCAAthat season. SeanAnastasia-Murphy(Massachusetts),AnthonyArena(Virginia),andJoelParker(Virginia)aretheotherthreetorunundernineminutesinthepastfouryears,noneofwhomhadattemptedtheeventbeforeenteringCollege. GibbyhasalsohadgreatsuccesscoachingathletesuptorepresenttheUnit-edStatesininternationalcompetition,withsevenathletesamassing15interna-tionalcapssince2003.Includedinthattotalarefourwhoworethered,white,andbluewhilestillathletesattheCollege;KeithBechtol,ChristoLandry,DaveMock,andHarryMiller. Bechtolranthefastest10,000mtimebyanAmericanjunior(19andunder)in2004withhisIC4A-winningturnof29:58.13,andearnedaspotontheU.S.teamfortheWorldJuniorChampionshipsthatsummer,wherehefinishedasthehighest-placingAmericanin19th. Inhis24thyearasDirectorofTrackandFieldatWilliamandMary,DanStimsonoverseesaprogramthathasdemonstratedsuccessbothintheclassroomandonthetrack,andhasservedasanexemplarymodelforwhatcollegiateath-leticsshouldbeallabout.Inrecognitionofhisyearsofservice,theCollegehon-oredCoachStimsonin2007bynamingthenewthrowingfacilityinhishonor,theStimsonThrowingEventsArea.MadepossiblethroughagenerousdonationfromMr.AndMrs.JoeShowker,thefacilityincludesanOlympicthrowingcagewith circles forboth thehammeranddiscus, two shotput circles, and javelinrunway. Themen’sandwomen’sprogramshavecombinedfor21ColonialAthleticAssociationtitlesoutof28possiblesincethe2002-03schoolyear,andhavegar-nerednumerousCAAAthlete andRookieof theYear awards. The TribeAthletics De-partment finished 117th nationally in the Learfield SportsDirectors’CupStandings for2008-09,anumber that rankedsecondamongColonialAthleticAssociation(CAA)programsandfourthinthestateofVirginia.TheDirectors’Cup,whichwascreatedbytheNACDAandUSATodayin1993-94,isaprogramthathonors institutionsmaintainingabroad-basedprogram,achievingsuccess inmanysports,bothmen’sandwomen’s.W&Mhasplacedamongthetop100nationallyin12oftheprogram’s16years,whileleadingtheCAAonsevenoccasions. W&MhasproducedmoreCAAChampionshipsthananyprogramintheleague’shistory.TheCollegeowns95leaguecrowns,nearly40morethanitsclosestcompetitor.TheTriberaked in theawards in2008-09aswell, tallyingacombined197 all-conference honors, 34 All-America honors and sixleague players of the year. During the 2008-09 season, theGreenandGoldproducedanoverall athleticswinningper-centageof68.2,whilerackingupacombined888wins. Alongwith its accomplishmentson thefieldofplay, theTribe is just as successful in the classroom, epitomizing theterm student-athlete. TheCollege has demonstrated thiscommitmentbyinvestingapproximately$16milliontowardtheconstructionandupgradeofitsathleticsfacilitiesduringjustthelastsixyears.AmongW&M’srecentprojectswereextensiveimprovementstoZableStadiumandthesurroundingareaoverthepastfouryears,includingabrand-newall-weathertrack,permanentlights,videoscoreboard,andmovingthetrackteamlockersintothestadium. Inthespringof2007,theCollegeconstructedanddedicatedtheStimsonThrow-ingEventsArea,a$100,000projectthatgavetheTribeanational-classfacilityfortheshotput,discus,hammer,andjavelinevents.Thefacilityincludesthreeshotputcircles,afull-lengthjavelinrunway,andanOlympicthrowingcageforthediscusandhammer,alllocatedashortwalkawayfromZableStadium. In2005,KaplanArenareceivedanupgradewiththeinstallationof6,900-squarefootpermanentwoodflooralongwithrubberizedsportsflooringontheopenendof the arena to accomodate track andfield andothermulti-purpose activities.Ayearearlier,thehomeofTribesoccerandlacrosse,Albert-DalyFieldwasdedicated,providingtheprogramswitha$1millionall-naturalgrassfacility.
