Head Coach Jeff Langdon @BelmontXCTF - 4

An institution within Belmont Athletics, Jeff Langdon enters his 22nd year as Belmont’s head coach for the men’s crosscountry and track & field teams. Belmont annually runs in some of the most competitive and prestigious meets in thenation, ranking among the top programs in the USTFCCCA South Region 11 of the last 13 seasons. During the Bruins11 year run in the Atlantic Sun Conference, Belmont University became synonymous with cross country success. UnderLangdon’s leadership, BU won a staggering six consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference Championships from 2002-07. Lastseason, Matt Miller earned All-Region and First Team All-Atlantic Sun honors, while Josh Helton was named Second TeamAll-Atlantic Sun. In 2010, the Bruins finished as the A-Sun Runners-Up, while Hilary Cheruiyot gave Belmont a first teamall-conference honoree for the 10th straight year. Picked sixth in the USTFCCCA South Region preseason poll, the Bruinprogram looks forward to year one in the OVC in 2012.

During the Bruins’ 2007 championship campaign, the team had four out of the top eight finishers, including individualchampion, Kipkosgei Magut. Four Bruins were named All-Atlantic Sun and Hillary Cheruiyot earned A-Sun Freshman ofthe Year honors. Langdon was also named Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year for a sixth time. Undoubtedly, since the pro-gram’s move to Division I almost a decade ago, the men’s cross country program has been a model of consistency. Inaddition to his conference titles, Langdon’s teams have finished in the top-12 at the NCAA South Regional each of thepast 11 years. All told, Langdon has produced five NCAA Championship qualifiers, 13 All-Region runners and 37 All-Atlantic Sun performers.

Adding to the team’s competitive success, they have also excelled in the classroom. This past year, every team memberearned a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, helping Belmont to itsninth Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship in 11 years.During the 2005 and 2007 seasons, the program had the highest teamgrade point average in Division I according to the United States CrossCountry Coaches Association. Additionally, the squad is annuallyamong the nation’s highest team grade-point averages and honored inthe yearly USTFCCCA All-Academic honor roll.

The BU track and field program has also emerged under Langdon’sdirection, and is coming off one of its most successful seasons in pro-gram history. Thrower Joe Frye earned multiple individual event cham-pionships at the indoor and outdoor conference meets, and qualified forthe NCAA Outdoor Regionals. The Bruin indoor team finished in aschool-best second place at the 2007 A-Sun Indoor Championship, highlighted by Hillary Cheruiyot earning meet Most OutstandingPerformer honors. In all, Belmont won five individual titles. The highlevel of competition carried into the outdoor season, as BU once againearned a program-best finish, this time third. Belmont had four individ-ual champions, most notably Kipkosgei Magut winning the 800 metersand earning two seconds en route to his second consecutive MostOutstanding Track Performer award. Magut, Ryan Snellen, and JacobBuckman also qualified for the NCAA Regional meet in the 5,000meters.

For Langdon, coaching is a natural extension from his competitive daysat Belmont where he ran from 1979-83. He was an outdoor track All-American in the marathon, an Academic All-American and the 1982District 24 Individual Champion in the marathon. Langdon was inductedinto the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in September of 1994.

A native of Fairfield, Ohio, Jeff and his wife Kelly, also a Belmont grad-uate, have one daughter, Jenna.

Dr. Robert (Bob) Fisher serves asPresident of Belmont University, a posi-tion he has held since April 2000. Duringhis tenure the University’s enrollment hasmore than doubled while the campusitself has expanded significantly with theadditions of the Curb Event Center andBeaman Student Life Center, the GordonE. Inman Center, the Troutt Theater com-plex, McWhorter Hall and several newresidence halls and parking garages.Under his leadership Belmont Universityalso broke into the Top 5 for the first timein the Best Regional Universities Southcategory in U.S. News & World Report’sanalysis of America’s Best Colleges.Soaring to No. 5 in the 2011 edition,Belmont was also honored for the thirdyear in a row as one of the top schoolsnationwide for "leading the pack inimprovements and innovative changes."

Academically, the University has addednumerous new interdisciplinary programsin the past decade, including SocialEntrepreneurship, New CenturyJournalism, Pharmacy and, most recent-ly, the Belmont College of Law which willwelcome its first class this fall. But Dr. Fisher’s greatest sense of accom-plishment comes not from new campusstructures, stronger endowments or anever-increasing student population.Rather, he measures achievementthrough witnessing education’s impact on

each individual student. "The student isthe focus of all our efforts here atBelmont," Fisher said, "and our top priori-ty is meeting the needs of those students. My life’s mission is to help create experi-ences that transform people, especiallystudents, in ways that enable them tobecome all they were created to be."
