UD MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

“The University of Dayton and the cross country program helped me with the tools to develop a great career and life. The faculty is innovative, informed and relevant. They have continued to be an invaluable resource long past my graduation. The same and more can be said of the cross country team, which created a deep sense of community and accomplishment. The team has given me friendships I will have for life. Cross country helped me perpetuate this lifelong running habit of mine! UD is a great school. You will be glad that you picked it.” – Jeff Jones ’99(Visual Communication Design, Senior Graphics Designer, Wright State University)

A CHAMPIONSHIP TRADITION

Over the years, the University of Dayton cross country team has produced All-Conference runners and has had Summa Cum Laude graduates. From Academic All-Americas to winning the Cross Country Only National Championship, the UD men’s cross country team prides itself on excelling both in the classroom and on the course.

The 2010 men’s cross country team was named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team for the 15th consecutive year.

Its recent graduates have gone on to be successful in many professions – engineers, dentists, teachers, naval pilots, doctors, personal trainers and self-employed computer consultants are among an extensive lists of fields for which UD cross country alums can be found. At the same time, these graduates still maintain their lifelong love of running, competing and finishing marathons – such as Boston and Chicago – along with local weekend races. How did the University of Dayton and the cross country program shape their lives? Here are selected Flyer alum and their thoughts:

“As a member of the UD men’s cross country team, you join a tradition of balanced student-athletes. Coach Davis challenges you to work hard on-and-off the field. It’s truly a complete program.” – Phil Ranly ‘01

“The University of Dayton provided me with an opportunity to run cross country at the Division I level and attain an education that is second to none. During my years as a Flyer, I was able to improve my times each season due to individual training that the coaches had geared towards me. That enabled me to achieve my optimum performance while competing and beating schools from the MAC, Big Ten, and SEC. In addition, the education I received has been key to where I stand professionally today. At UD, I valued the benefits of a large school while being treated like an individual from the staff and professors. The cross country team is like a family and I still stay in close touch with everyone I ran with.” – Tom Stocker ’96 (Two-Time Team MVP) (Mechanical Engineer, Robotics Engineer, Combined Technologies Group)

“Next to marrying my wife, choosing to attend the University of Dayton was the best decision I made in my life. Academically, the faculty and staff did everything they could to prepare me for my career and life after graduation. I was never just a number. The same applied to my experience as a UD student-athlete. Everyone from Coach Davis, to the athletic administration did so much to make every athlete feel important and make us successful. Of all things that I learned at UD, the most important was how to effectively serve as a leader in my community.”– Tim Mulligan (“High Flyer” and Team MVP 2002, Most Improved Runner 2000) (High School Teacher and Coach in New Jersey)

“Deciding to run at UD was the single most exciting choice I have ever made. Through example and constructive guidance, I learned from the coaches and older runners the success that results from discipline and attention to detail. My running was taken to a place I had previously thought was out of reach. I left UD a much different person that when I arrived, equipped with the tools to succeed in a dynamic world I feel very fortunate to continue to be part of something very special.” – Riley Scott ’98 (President, Greenview Enterprises LTD. – Boulder, Colorado)

The men’s cross country team believes in logging 100-percent of their training miles on natural surfaces. UD trains in many of Dayton’s metro parks and two State Parks, all of which provide the team an opportunity to prepare at a competitive level.

INDIAN RIFFLE PARK(KETTERING, OH)Indian Riffle Park is the home course of the Flyer 5K, the only home meet of the season for Dayton’s cross country teams. In addition, the Flyer 5K is the season opening meet for the NCAA Division I Teams in Southwest Ohio.

JOHN BRYAN STATE PARK(YELLOW SPRINGS, OH)Trail runs of up to 12 miles to take the Flyers on a scenic tour from Glen Helen into John Bryan State Park and Clifton Gorge. The trail follows the Little Miami River, a national scenic waterway.

SYCAMORE STATE PARK(TROTWOOD, OH)An eight mile nature trail through forested hills takes the Flyers to a one mile grass trail which encircles a lake, the site of the team’s annual “Tombstone Relay.”

EASTWOOD METRO PARK(DAYTON, OH)A flat, grassy five mile course that provides UD with an ideal venue for tempo runs.

HUFFMAN METRO PARK(DAYTON, OH)A 400 meter grass trail which connects to a 1,400 meter loop for a flat, grass suface upon which to do threshold training.

GRANT PARK(CENTERVILLE, OH)The trails of this 187-acre natural area lead along creeks and through a meadow, forest, prairie, and wetland habitats. A well-maintained grass course, 1500 meters in length, encircles the prairie. This course is similar to the footing found at national class competition venues.

POSSOM CREEK METRO PARK(DAYTON, OH)Five and a half miles of scenic, mostly level trails providing a great venue for recover runs.

SUGARCREEK METRO PARK(BELLBROOK, OH)Five miles of scenic trails, ranging from easy grades to strenuous up-hills provide the opportunity for Dayton to simulate any courses the team will race on during the season.

BILL YECK PARK AND FOREST FIELD(CENTERVILLE, OH)The warm up and cool down trails of Bill Yeck Park lead to Forest Field. Three loops and adjacent fields of Forest Field park consists of 800 meters, 1,000 meters, and 1,200 meters. Running around these fields provides opportunity to train at various tempos over a variety of distances.

HILLS AND DALES PARK(DAYTON, OH)Within two miles from campus, this park is affectionately known to the Flyers as “Tim’s Trails,“ named after a former team captain and record holder. A 500 meter steady grade provides a site for uphill repetition training.

2010In his senior year as a Flyer, Chris Lemon continued to be the focal point for UD cross-country. Named a team captain and MVP, Lemon hand-ed in the top UD time at each. At the Flyer 5K, Chris set a course meet record with a time of 14:45 while helping his team to a 2nd place finish. Shortly after, at the Mel Brodt Invite 8K, with a 24:13 time. At the All-Ohio Championships 8K, Chris set yet another course record, this time at 24:11. Chris was named to the All Great Lakes Regional Team, and he set a team 10K record of 30:31, helping him finish 5th in a field of 217 runners. Lemon quali-fied for the NCAA Division I National Championships, where he finished 13th out of 38 individual qualifiers, and 84th out of 255 overall runners. Chris became the only Flyer to fin-ish 1st (2009) or 2nd (2010) overall in the A-10 Championships. Add-ing to Chris’ 2010 accolades, ESPN The Magazine named Chris to the “Academic All-American”/2nd team. Finally, for the 2nd consecutive season, Lemon’s hard work inside the classroom earned him the title of Atlantic 10 “Student-Athlete of the Year.”

2009Lemon spent his junior year re-setting the program 8K record for a second and third time, as well as claiming the first-ever Atlantic 10 individual crown in team his-tory. Lemon won the conference championship on a muddy day, in a time of 26:13, which helped the Flyers finish third overall – the best finish in program history. In the

team’s second race, the Mel Brodt Invitational, Lemon re-broke his own school record from 2008 with a time of 24:08. Two meets later, at the Notre Dame Invitational, he would do it again and set the bar at a new low point of 24:05. The zippy junior also led UD in every single race during the 2009 season and was named the team’s Most Valuable Runner for the second consecutive year. On top of all that, Lemon was a hard worker in the classroom and was honored as the conference’s Student-Athlete of the Year, as well as UD’s male Presi-dential Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

2008To say Chris Lemon had a breakout sophomore season would be an understatement. During the 2008 fall season, the fleet-footed sec-ond year runner teamed up with brother, Matt, to become the first Flyers to ever qualify for the NCAA National Championship meet. Chris began the season strong by leading the Flyers at the Meijer Flyer 5K, in which he placed fifth overall in a time of 15:41. He would lead the Flyers in five of eight races overall. Chris set the 8K school record at the Atlantic 10 Championships (24:11), which earned him All-Con-ference honors for the first time. At the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals, Lemon placed third - the best ever finish by a Flyer runner at that event - before running the fast-est 10K time in school history at the NCAA National Championships (30:55). Although Lemon finished 102nd at the national meet, it was a season without precedent for any Flyer. He was named Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week on Sept.

2007Chris Lemon placed seventh overall to open the season at the Flyer 5K, and would only improve throughout the fall. He took fourth place over-all at the next meet, the National Catholic Invitational, in a Flyer freshman record time of 24:59. Lemon established himself by finishing as Dayton’s second man in four of the final five meets of the season, including at the At-lantic 10 Championships where he finished 26th overall. To round out the year, Lemon posted a time of 32:04 at the NCAA Regional, good enough for third all-time on the school’s 10K list. Chris established three All-Time 8K Performances in program history and a third place Harrier Hero ranking during his freshman campaign.

HIGH SCHOOLOwns the sixth fastest 5k senior time in Ohio at 15:44 (one second behind his brother, Matt Lemon)...Placed sixth at the 2006 D-I Cross Country Championships...Earned a 2nd and 4th place finishes at the D-I Track and Field Championships (4:13 1600meter and 9:15 in 3200 meter)...His best 5k cross country time stands at 15:30.

2010Matt Lemon provided leadership, as one of the team’s three captains and winner of the 2010 High Flyer Award. At the Mel Brodt In-vitational 8K, Matt finished in 24:21 helping the team to a 1st place finish. Matt helped the team finish 2nd at the All-Ohio Champi-onship 8K by crossing the finish line in 24:28. Lemon helped UD to a 4th place finish in the A-10 Championship 8K with a time of 24:35, and in his final race as a Flyer, he finished in 31:07 at the Great Lakes Regional 10K. Lemon was also named to the A-10 All-Academic Team for the 2010 season.

2009As a junior, Lemon ran the fifth-best time in school history 24:19 at the Notre Dame Invitational and also posted strong finishes at the Flyer 5K (3rd, 15:07) and Mel Brodt Invitational (4th, 24:28) – at both meets the Flyers took first place. Ultimately, Lemon played in instrumental role in helping UD fin-ish third overall at the A-10 Championships. He finished 9th overall in a time of 27:06. His finish resulted in a third-straight inclusion on the A-10 All-Conference squad. A strong aca-demician, Lemon was also named to the A-10 All-Academic Team for the 2009 season.

2008Along with twin brother, Chris, Matt Lemon made UD cross country history in November by becoming the first Flyer runners to ever qualify for the NCAA National Championship meet. Matt took eighth at the National Cath-

olic Invitational (25:22). He also eclipsed his 8K personal best at the Atlantic 10 Championships. In addition to helping UD to a sixth place team finish, he earned All-Conference honors for the second straight year by running the course in 24:22 to take eighth overall. Matt placed 14th at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional to earn a berth at the NCAA Championships, where he had a 31:02 mark.

2007Matt Lemon was named to the Atlantic 10’s All-Conference Team thanks to an eighth place finish at the A-10 Championships with a time of 25:54. Matt earned the A-10 Rookie of the Year award, as he was the first freshman finisher. At the NCAA Regionals, Lemon broke another school record by best-ing the 10K mark in a time of 31:33. His 24th place earned him a spot on the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches As-sociation Division I Men’s All-Region Cross Country Team. For his accomplishments during the 2007 season, Matt was named the team’s Most Valuable Runner.

HIGH SCHOOLPlaced fifth at the 2006 Ohio Division I State Cross Country Championships... 15:35. Personal best 5k was 15:21.

HEAD COACH15TH SEASON AT UDCEDARVILLE ‘67

RICH DAVIS

Rich Davis, a Dayton Athletic Association “Running Hall of Fame” member, will begin his 15th season coaching the men’s cross country team in 2011. The previous fourteen Flyer squads coached by Davis have a combined overall winning percentage of .597 and each has been named as an Academic All-American Team. Under his guidance, the UD individual 8K record has been reset eleven times. Davis was named as the “Division I Coach of the Year” for 2008 by the Ohio Collegiate Cross Country Coaches Association.

Davis has coached the six Flyers named as A-10 “All-Conference” and the four Flyers to earn the A-10’s “Top Rookie” award in the 30-year history of the program. “All-Conference” performers were Rick Heitkamp (5th in 1998), Dan Moroney (7th in 1999), Mike Andersen ( 9th in 2005, 3rd in 2006, 5th in 2008, & 6th in 2009), Matt Lemon (8th in 2007, 8th in 2009, 9th in 2009, & 4th in 2010), Chris Lemon (3rd in 2008 & 1st in 2009, & 2nd in 2010), and Greg Roeth (8th in 2010). Chris Lemon is the first Flyer to become the Atlantic 10’s individual champion. Flyer freshmen, earning “Top Rookie” distinction at the A-10 Championships, include: Kevin Tscholl (2000), Mike Andersen (2005), Matt Lemon (2007) and Greg Roeth (2009). Eric Contreras was named the Atlantic-10 Cross Country “Student-Athlete of the Year” in both 2005 and 2006. Chris Lemon was the Atlantic 10 Cross Country “Student-Athlete of the Year” in both 2009 and 2010.

UD Flyer runners coached by Davis over the past fourteen years hold all of the top 50 all-time five-mile performances. Currently, thirty-three Davis coached runners are listed as “UD Harrier Heroes”. These are runners who hold the top 35 all-time “personal best” five-mile times in UD Cross Country history.

The 2009 Flyer squad finished in third place overall in the Atlantic 10 championship, the program’s highest placing in sixteen years of A-10 competition. Flyer teams coached by Davis have twice won the Cross Country Only National Championships in as many appearances. In 2008 Chris and Matt Lemon became the first Flyers ever to qualify and compete in the NCAA Division I National Championships. Chris qualified again for the National Championships in 2010, placing 84th in 30:57.8 for 10K.

A native of western Pennsylvania, Davis has lived in the Dayton area since graduating from Cedarville College in 1967, where he captained the track team and earned MVP honors in cross country. He is retired from a 30-year career of teaching and coaching

in the Centerville City Schools and the Sugarcreek Local Schools in Bellbrook. His 1976 high school team remains to date as the only boy’s team from Bellbrook to qualify for the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s State Cross Country Championships. Davis and his wife Doris, who is also retired from a 30-year teaching career, live in Washington Township.

A lifetime runner, Davis has been an USA Track and Field Masters All-American at both 10,000 and 5,000-meters in 3 different age groups and represented the United States in two World Veterans Championships. In the year prior to becoming the Flyers Head Coach, he was the USATF Masters National 8K Cross Country bronze medallist, silver medallist at 10,000 meters in the USATF Masters National Track & Field Championships, and the USATF National Champion at 12K on the roads in the fifty and over age group. A veteran road racer, he has completed 35 marathons, which include seven finishes in the Boston Marathon.

VOLUNTEER ASSISTANTCOACH3RD SEASON AT UDSINCLAIR COMMUNITY COLLEGE ‘88

Robert English was named volunteer assistant coach for UD men’s cross country team in June of 2007.

An avid runner since 1996, English has been coached by Olympic gold medalist Bob Schul and has trained with the Schul Racing team. His training helped him record a career-best and impressive marathon time of 2:52.35 in 2003.

English continued his involvement with the Bob Schul Racing Team serving as president from 2003-’06. He currently serves as an advisor and coach for the 5 Rivers Metro Running Club where his responsibilities include working with adult recreational runners; in addition to organizing training times and venues in the Springfield area.

English graduated from Sinclair Community College in 1988 where he studied Mechanical Drawing. He currently works at Machine X of Dayton, Inc., where he’s in his 18th year as a shop foreman. He recently decided to continue his formal education at Clark State in the physical

therapy program.

He was born in Tokyo, Japan and attended high school in Germany. A natural competitor, while in high school English participated in such sports as baseball, football, and wrestling. It wasn’t until after his days of competitive club rugby that he became a serious runner.

“Rob continues Flyer cross country’s tradition of having assistant coaches who understand the demands that are placed upon Division I distance runners,” said UD head coach Rich Davis. “With a well rounded athletic background, combined with his expertise in relating conditioning and physical therapy to sport, Rob’s coaching will help our athletes develop as we strive towards higher levels of competitiveness.”

English currently resides in Springfield, Ohio.

The 2010 University of Dayton cross country team had arguably one of the best seasons in school history on an individual and team level, as they were led by head coach Rich Davis for the 14th year.

The Flyers once again started their season hosting the Flyer 5k. The team placed second overall with 34 points while they were able to capture the top two individual spots as Chris Lemon and Matt Lemon placed first and second respectively. Red shirt sophomore Greg Roeth placed eighth to make three Flyers in the top ten.

The second meet would prove to be a success for UD as they ran away with the team title at the Mel Brodt Invitational. The team scored 23 points and placed all five scorers in the top ten. Chris Lemon placed first for the second straight week and his brother Matt Lemon was a close second. Jeremy Schiele, Kyle Lowry and Nate Addessi rounded out the scoring for the Flyers as they placed fifth, sixth and ninth respectively.

UD continued to impress as the next week they were able to place second at the National Catholic Invitational. The team was once again led by Chris Lemon who won his third straight race. The team also benefited by great performances by Matt Lemon (6th), Greg Roeth ( 13th), Kyle Lowry (22nd) and Jeremy Schiele (34th).

Dayton placed second once again in their next meet as they competed in the All-Ohio Championships. Chris Lemon continued his undefeated streak placing first with a course record time of 24:11. Matt Lemon finished fourth with an impressive 24:28 time and Greg Roeth cut 22 seconds of his personal best to finish in eleventh with a time of 24:55. This was the first time three Flyers have ever been under 25 minutes in the same race.

The next meet was the NCAA Pre-Nationals. This was a meet that gathered some of the most talented teams across the nation. The team finished in a tie for 21st. They were able to beat Michigan, Marquette and Ohio by time. All of these teams were ranked ahead of them in the region.

Dayton would next travel to Pittsburgh for the Atlantic 10 Championships. The team would run well placing fourth overall. Chris Lemon was able to place second in the race earning All-Conference honors. His twin brother Matt also earned All-Conference honors as he crossed the line in fourth place. Greg Roeth was the third Flyer to garner All-Conference honors as he finished in eighth place. He also had the fastest time in his class for the second consecutive year.

UD would finish out the season running in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional race for a chance to move on to the NCAA Championships. They finished 13th out of 31 teams. Chris Lemon continued his great season as he individually earned a berth to the NCAA Championships and All-Region honors by crossing the line in fifth place breaking his own 10k record with a time of 30:31. He would go on to the NCAA Championships and place 84th overall and 13th out of the individuals.

Dayton welcomes back an array of talent next fall including All-Conference performer Greg Roeth and a plethora of runners ready to make their mark on the program. The team hopes to maintain its role as one of the most successful programs in the Atlantic 10.

In 2010, CHRIS LEMON won the Flyer 5K Challenge

Since 1999, the Flyer 5K Challenge has been the premier early season meet that features the Division I programs in Southwest Ohio: Dayton, Miami, Cincinnati, Xavier and Wright State, along with several area Division II and III institutions. The only home meet on the UD schedule, Ketter-ing’s Indian Riffle Park has served as the venue since the meet’s inception.

The 5,000-meter course is grass covered with some wooded trails and is relatively flat. There is one hill (to be run twice) and a small creek to jump near the finish.

The essence of the meet is to give an early season racing opportunity to the teams of Southwest Ohio. The race also features several area Division I and III institutions. The Flyers have won the event four times, while placing second three times.

The course is very spectator-friendly. By moving about the small area between the pond, track and picnic shelter, spectators are able to view the runners starting, finishing and throughout each of the three miles of racing.
