    MOCCASIN CROSS COUNTRY

    The Moccasin cross country teams have been a dominantpower in the Sunshine State Conference.

    The mens team has fi nished fi rst or second at the SSC Cham-pionships 18 straight years, including a string of 14 straight SSCtitles that was snapped in 2011. Overall, the mens team has won a league-best 15 SSC Championships. The womens squad haswon seven SSC crowns and has fi nished fi rst or second in 14 of the last 17 years.

    Individually, Florida Southern has had the mens individualSSC champion 12 of the last 16 years, including two-time cham-pions Gary Crossan (1998-99), Tyrone Bell (2004-05) and Ben Martucci (2009-10). Florida Southerns women have claimed sixSSC individual titles, including back-to-back wins by Alli Tatan-gelo (1999-2000). In 2006, SSC womens champion Jael Koechplaced sixth at the NCAA Division II Championship, making herthe Moccasins fi rst two-time All-American in cross country. Shewas 12th in 2005.

    The womens team has made three trips to the NCAA DivisionII Championship, fi nishing 11th in 1999, 21st in 2001 and 15th in 2006. The mens team made a sixth appearance at the NCAADivision II championship in 2010, placing 23rd overall. Previously, FSC had placed 22nd in 2009, 21st in 2007; 15th in 2006; 13th in 2005 and 20th in 2004. The women have had nine top-fi ve regional fi nishes, while the men have fi nished in the top fi ve 11times at NCAA regional appearances, including 2007s fi rst-everregional title.

    ACADEMIC SUCCESSDavid Tomchinsky and Chris Yanichko of the mens cross

    country and track tea, Mackenzie Rideout of the womens crosscountry team and Alyssa Shuey and Alec Slamal of the womenstrack team were each named recipents of the NCAA Division IIAcademic Achievement Award in 2012-13. The fi vesome wereamong 65 student-athletes so honored from Florida SouthernCollege.

    To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete had to have anoverall grade point average of at least 3.50, had to have complet-ed at least two years of college work and had to have been anactive member of an athletic team.

    The Division II Academic Achievement Awards were fi rst pre-sented in 2009 when FSC had 46 honorees. The awards are spon-sored by the Division II Athletics Directors Association.

    In addition, Yanichko was also named a Capital One/CoSIDAThird Team Academic All-American last season, becoming theschools third-ever Academic All-American in mens cross country.
