Four consecutive top-three finishes. Back-to-back silvermedals from 2012-13. 2015 bronze medalists. Picked to finishthird at this year’s Atlantic 10 Championship, the Saint Joseph’smen’s cross country squad enters the 2015 campaign with itseyes set on its first A-10 title since 2009. Under the direction of27th-year head coach Mike Glavin, SJU returns 20 Hawks andadds 16 newcomers for the 2015 season.

The Hawks return five of seven scorers from last year, including junior John Mascioli (17th), senior Quinn Davis(33rd), sophomore David Dorsey (41st), graduate student PaulSzulewski (47th), and junior Jimmy Daniels (52nd); Szulewski(2011) and Mascioli (2013) earned A-10 Rookie of the Year hon-ors in their respective freshman seasons.

The veteran duo of Szulewski and Davis will captain the2015 squad.

Szulewski, now in his second year as a squad captain, wasSJU’s #3 runner at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic RegionalChampionships 10k (31:26.9) last season. After redshirting the2013 campaign due to injury, Szulewski fought his way backinto a scoring threat last year at the conference meet.

“Paul did a great job last year, and did it while he was try-ing to come back from all of those injuries of his junior year,”said Glavin. “He made it part way back by the end of the sea-son, and he was running in our top seven again, which is a hardfight for a year off.” Davis was one of five Hawks to both race in and score at all

three major meets last year, placing 37th as SJU’s #2 finisher atthe IC4A Championships and 98th at NCAA Mid-AtlanticRegionals, turning in a collegiate-best 32:45.9 at the 10k meet.

“You look at guys who, from their way on in until now, haverisen and grown within the sport, and the most obvious onethere was Quinn. He went from running 30 miles a week in highschool to now trying to get things done that he should be get-ting done.”

Alongside Szulewski and Davis, the junior trio of Mascioli,Daniels, and Dan Savage will be expected to round out SaintJoseph’s top five in 2015.

With the vacancy of 2014 A-10 individual champion RadGunzenhauser and three-time All-Conference selection LoganMohn, SJU’s top two runners from last season, SJU’s 2014 #3runner will be expected to step up into one of the Hawks’ topspots this year, and Mascioli is primed to do so in his third sea-son for the Crimson and Gray. After claiming the top freshmanspot at the 2013 A-10 meet, Mascioli continued to improve inhis second season, turning in PRs in the 8.4k 26:49.6) and 10k(31:47.8).

Daniels and Savage are coming off of outstanding outdoortrack seasons. Daniels qualified for IC4As in the 10k and scoredin the event at the 2015 A-10 Outdoor Track and FieldChampionships while Savage, who missed last cross countryseason due to injury, qualified for IC4As in the steeplechase andtook over ten seconds off of his PR in the event to place eighthat 2015 A-10s.

Mascioli, Daniels, and Savage were the only freshmen torace A-10s in their rookie seasons.

“We’ve got a trio there that’s going to be nice; that’s goingto make us,” said Glavin of his junior core. “John consistentlyraces above his training, Jimmy is very consistent and is startingto come along the way he wants to, and Dan, although he has-n’t raced much cross country, is now in his junior season interms of training and strength. If Paul and Quinn can do thekinds of things we think they’re capable of doing, with progres-sion, and then you add these three guys to that, there’s anexperienced quintet there.”

Saint Joseph’s top returning sophomore, Dorsey can alsobe expected to factor into SJU’s top spots in 2015. A two-timeA-10 Rookie of the Week selection last year, Dorsey proved tobe SJU’s #4 runner and top rookie and finished third of allHawks at IC4As.

“You usually see the biggest jump in progression fromfreshman to sophomore year, so if he follows suite like a lot ofrunners have, his biggest improvement is going to come off offreshman year,” said Glavin. “I think he’s going to put himself asa factor with that Szulewski, Davis, Mascioli, Daniels, andSavage group immediately. He races consistently and aggres-sively.”

Following SJU’s expected top six, the Hawks will utilize thedepth of a core group of sophomores in Collin Crilly, KevinDorsey, Dave Garton, Anthony Morelli, and Brendan Bilotta;Garton (70th), Crilly (92nd), and Morelli (94th) all raced A-10slast season.

“Count them in,” said Glavin of his second-year racers.“They’re all going to be factors.”

Seniors Michael Coleman and John Egan will round out thefinal year veterans for the 2015 squad and will also look to leadthe Crimson and Gray with their experience this fall.

“They have both struggled a lot with injuries, but bothwalked on to the program and have been as dedicated as canbe,” said Glavin. “We are hoping this will be a banner year forMichael, and John looks like he’s back.”

Juniors Chris Bencivengo and Mike Cassidy will round outthe upperclassmen experience while sophomores Graham Bly,Jake Durante-Koller, and Patrick Quirk gained valuable experi-ence in their rookie seasons and will add depth for the Hawksin 2015. Junior Jack Magee and sophomore Andrew Myers willtrain with the cross country squad to prepare for the middledistance events that the 2015-16 indoor and outdoor track sea-sons provide.

The Hawks welcome 16 newcomers to the squad this fall.Junior transfer Evan Guerin (Saint Charles, Mo./ArchmereAcademy (Del.)/Rochester (N.Y.)) alongside freshmen JustinBranco (Franklinville, N.J. (Delsea Regional), Jack Daly (Media,Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep), Dylan Eddinger (Bally, Pa./Boyertown),Mike Elliott (Princeton, N.J./Notre Dame High), Tommy Higley(Wilmington, Del./Salesianum), Rory Houston (Clifton,N.J./Clifton), Shawn Hutchison (Blackwood, N.J./BishopEustace Prep), Sean Macpherson (Stratford, N.J./Sterling),Matthew Mullin-Garcia (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep), KeelanO’Reilly (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East), MichaelPhayre (Abington, Pa./La Salle College High), John Podles(Phoenix, Md./Calvert Hall College High), Sean Princivalle(Ambler, Pa./La Salle College High), Will Sponaugle (Palmyra,Pa./Hershey), and Brendan Thorp (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) will round out the 2015 cross country squad.

ASSISTANT COACH

Teddy Meyers, a 2007 graduate and 12-time letterwinner of the Saint Joseph's men's

cross country and track teams, enters his eighth season on Hawk Hill in 2015-16.

A standout student-athlete at SJU, Meyers built an impressive résumé of both athlet-

ic and academic accomplishments throughout

his career on Hawk Hill. Meyers was a two-time

Atlantic 10 All-Conference cross country hon-

oree and earned the A-10 5k title in both the

2006 indoor and outdoor track seasons.

For his dedication in the classroom, Meyers

was selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic

cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track

teams for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 campaigns.

His six academic honors are the second most

received by any track member at Saint Joseph's

in program history.

In May 2007, Meyers graduated from Saint

Joseph's University with his bachelor's degree

in economics. The Bethel Park, Pa. native also

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has beenflapping its wings for 59 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughoutevery basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will NeverDie."

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks”since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the stu-dent body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” win-ning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typ-ified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aeri-al attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontin-ued at SJU following the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It hasbeen selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, SportsIllustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball maga-zine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has

been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s

University in over 80 years of use. The track is the current

home of the men’s and women’s track and field teams while

the pitch is the current home of the men’s and women’s soc-

cer teams and the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams.

Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the

field has undergone numerous changes over the years. The

most recent upgrade occured this summer, as the TigerTurf

that was laid down in 2008 was replaced with FieldTurf and

Saint Joseph’s track was resurfaced.

One of the largest municipal parks in the United States,

Fairmount Park includes several excellent training venues for

Saint Joseph's runners. The Hawks benefit from the use of the Wissahickon Trail, Belmont Plateau, and both Martin Luther King,

Jr. and Kelly Drives (also known as West and East River Drives, respectively). All are just minutes away from Hawk Hill and are

among the most favored spots for Philadelphia's running community.

The Belmont Plateau serves as SJU cross country’s home course. It is Philadelphia's primary high school and college cross

country course and is considered one of the most challenging in the country.

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is nowthe Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. Whatstarted as an eight-school, men’s basketball-onlyaffiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one ofthe best conferences in the country, and is cele-brating its 40thanniversary in 2015-16.

That growth and prominence is a directresult of the ideals and commitments of themember institutions of the Atlantic 10 – DavidsonCollege, The University of Dayton, DuquesneUniversity, Fordham University, George MasonUniversity, The George Washington University, LaSalle University, University of Massachusetts,University of Rhode Island, University ofRichmond, St. Bonaventure University, SaintJoseph's University, Saint Louis University andVirginia Commonwealth University.

The Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigatingsweeping conference realignment over the lastfew years, adding Davidson College, GeorgeMason University and Virginia CommonwealthUniversity. The additions have proven successfulwith all three institutions winning regular seasonand tournament championships. The league con-tinues to draw national praise for its decisionsduring conference realignment in selecting strongacademic institutions with basketball-centric,robust athletic programs. The 14 member institu-tions of the A-10 are united and strengthened bytheir diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educa-tional mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a pri-vate university or a land grant institution. Thevaried pursuits of each member prove that thereare many threads that weave the fabric for agreat conference.

The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total pop-ulation of over 76.5 million people within its geo-graphic footprint of eight states and the Districtof Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sportsthis year: baseball, men's and women's basket-ball, men's and women's cross country, fieldhockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's andwomen's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving,

men's and women's tennis, and women's volley-ball.

The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, havemade a strong commitment to making the aca-demic and athletics equation a successful one.Over the years, the league membership hasstrived to better recognize the academic accom-plishments of its student-athletes. TheCommissioner's Honor Roll, which cites everyAtlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade pointaverage or better, recognized 3,029 student-ath-letes in 2014-15, a record for a 14-team A-10. Theleague sponsors Academic All-Conference teamsin each of its sports and honors two student-ath-letes as the A-10 Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides $70,000 inpostgraduate scholarships awards to 14 student-athletes, one from each campus.

The Atlantic 10 Conference annually earnshigh marks in the NCAA Academic metrics. Thisincludes graduating its student-athletes at an 89percent rate according to the NCAA’s most recentGraduation Success Rate (GSR) figures, five per-centage points higher than the national average. There were 90 A-10 teams with a perfect 1000GSR score in the NCAA’s 2014 most recent report. The league also had an average AcademicProgress Rate (APR) of 985 in 2015, seven pointshigher than the national average. A record 60teams were singled out for public recognition fortheir APR scores by the NCAA this past spring. There were 51 teams with a perfect APR score of1000 and another 71 teams that scored a 990 inthe 2015 report.

Success on the playing field has mirrored theA-10’s classroom prowess, with the league earn-ing NCAA postseason bids in each of its 21 sports, including two men’s soccer bids and 11 men’s andwomen’s basketball bids in 2014-15. Daytonwomen’s basketball made a run to the Elite Eight, challenging eventual national champion UConn inthe process, while VCU baseball advanced to the2015 NCAA Super Regionals.

Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is anindependent, Catholic, Jesuit universityteaching disciplined reasoning, effectivecommunication and a love of learning. FromWillings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to StilesStreet in North Philadelphia to its currentlocation on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s hascontinued to grow and change with thetimes. The University combines the Jesuit tra-dition of academic excellence, a history ofservice and an ideal campus location to pro-duce successful students who strive to makea good world even better.

Full-time, undergraduate day enrollmentcomprises approximately 4,670 students.Graduate, evening and executive programspush total enrollment to more than 8,000 stu-dents.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCESaint Joseph’s nationally-recognized aca-

demic reputation is confirmed by ongoingacknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News &World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tra-dition of intellectual inquiry and personalconcern manifests itself in small, challengingclasses taught by a caring faculty. Graduateassistants do not teach, so undergraduatescan be sure they are receiving the very besteducational experience from trained experts.One-on-one interaction between studentsand faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s.

A solid liberal arts curriculum providesacross-the-board learning for every student.Supporting that curriculum are comprehen-sive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that preparesstudents not only for employment and grad-uate school, but for life itself.

In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which hous-es the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, theCenter for Food Marketing and the region'sfirst "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms."An 87,000-square-foot international academ-ic center featuring state-of-the-art distancelearning technology, it is located near thecorner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICEThe students of Saint Joseph’s University

are dedicated to making today’s world evenbetter. A natural spirit of volunteerism hasenabled the University’s community serviceprograms to become the most popularextracurricular activities on campus. In addi-tion, a Service Learning program allows stu-dents to receive academic credit for theirwork outside the classroom.

SJU offers local, national and internation-al opportunities for student service. From

North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; fromNew Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains,Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuitmission of serving those in need. best of dynamic Philadelphia with the subur-ban, residential setting of the elegant MainLine. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two coun-ties, allowing students to literally enjoy thebest of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cul-tural, social and athletic attractions, is easilyaccessible, while the safety, serenity andgreenery of a suburban campus are right athand.
